Now WebTV Compliant

Thank God!

What did they have to change? How is WebTV different from the real internet?

Just hazarding a guess here, I think it has something to do with the cookies set by the site. WebTV might not support cookies, or support them differently than other browsers.

I don’t think cookies were the problem. WebTV seems to work quite well with cookies (except that you can’t go in and delete 'em if you want to - no OS).

The problem, I believe, was the crappy WebTV browser, which, amongst other things, doesn’t support java, and doesn’t seem to work very well at all with sites that pose no problem for IE or Netscape.

The fix for the WebTV problem was actually posted a while ago at the VBulletin board (a link Jerry Davis posted just after the conversion), but it’s a code hack. As such, it’s completely understandable that the SD would not want to screw around with brand new software.

So we’ve all had to be patient, and now we’re finally rewarded with full access. Me, I’m still trying to catch up with all the stuff I missed.

We’re sorry all our WebTV users had to wait for us and vB to get its act together.

To restate the policy around here, the technical staff is not a big believer in hacks; anything that takes us away from plain vanilla vB makes upgrading and maintaining the system much more difficult.

We also take a conservative view where upgrades are concerned. When the upgrades are released by vb, they’re beta releases as they chase the bugs out. We prefer to wait until the release looks secure and/or goes gold and THEN apply the upgrade. It makes a more stable platform and means less chance that in the process of trying to improve things we actually kill the system.

Thanks to all of you for your patience. And I note that even with what we’ve been through since April 28, we have not had ONE of those system lockups like we had every day with UBB. That alone makes my day.

Thanks, all. You’ve just made a rather good case against WebTV.
