NSEW: How far have you been in each cardinal direction?

Finally, someone is asking me something about personal data that I keep for reasons I’m not sure of:

N: 56º 49’ N, 5º 7’ W (Fort William, Scotland)
S: 24º 33’ N, 81º 48’ W (Key West, Florida)
E: 37º 59’ N, 23º 19’ E (Athens, Greece)
W: 49º 11’ N, 123º12’ W (Vancouver, British Columbia)

This is not a particularly wide span, but the east-west expanse is 146º 7’, which is about 41% of all meridians. The north-south expanse is 32º 16’, which is about 18% of all parallels. Clearly, I need to go to the southern hemisphere and get these numbers up.

N: The vicinity of Skibotn, Norway
S: Douz, Tunisia
E: Larnaca, Cyprus (The airport, otherwise, Nicosia)
W: Chicago (O’Hare airport, otherwise Columbus, OH)

North: Anchorage, Alaska
South: Durban, South Africa
West: Kauai, Hawaii*
East: Budapest, Hungary*

  • I’ve been to Tokyo, Japan so can qualify as the extreme on either the E or W points, depending on your frame of reference. In fact, Durban is slightly farther east than Budapest, too.

Hey @Colibri, I know it’s an old post but glad to see you visited my hometown. Did you go to there to collect fossils ?

Actually, I was was working on a forestry project.

Since I last posted, I’ve been east as far as the vicinity of Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

That’s cool @Colibri . Hope you got to see some tigers in their natural habitat.

North: Kansas City. Kansas.
South: Calhoun County, Arkansas
West: Fort Smith, Arkansas
East: Huntsville, Alabama

The last one was a sort of “space camp lite” with the school science club. The northern one was a youth group trip in Missouri, and we crossed over to Kansas mostly just to say we’d been to another state. Going south was to visit relatives, and I believe going west was for a doctor’s visit, but I can’t remember what for. It may have even been to visit someone in the hospital.

I had no idea zombies traveled so much.

North – Reykjavík
South – Santiago

It’s an interesting question still, after all these years…

Using the Prime Meridian and the Equator as the origin point:
North: Arctic icepack north of Svalbard, Norway - 80 degrees north
South: Milford Sound, New Zealand
West: Nome, Alaska
East: Nome, Alaska (slight problem using longitude as the measuring factor).

If I’m looking at miles, then west of the International Date Line, it’s again Milford Sound, New Zealand. East of the International Date Line, it’s the Cook Islands.

Furthest west from London I’ve travelled continuously aiming west is Hoover Dam, USA. East, it’s back to Milford Sound, New Zealand. North and south are the same.
