Just mentioning in passing: A John Boorman film from the late 1980s, Hope and Glory, had a sequence where the teenage daughter was going to the USO dance and drew a black ink line up the back of both legs to simulate nylons, which she didn’t have/couldn’t afford (There’s a war on, you know). I think one ink line was very crooked which led to some hilarity.
