Obi Wan Kenobi series to start filming in March, {Now showing as of June 2022}

He knows that already. I mean…he does, right?

Anakin never referred to himself as Vader in his presence, and as far as Obi-Wan knew, he died by that molten river on Mustafar. So probably not.

These are precisely the gaps in the story, and contradictions, that this series will address. As well as cover the Inquisitors, formerly Jedi Killers, role in cleaning up the galaxy.

Should we use this thread or a new one for episode discussions?

Brian
will be watching tonight…

I’ve watched the first episode and will watch the first episode tomorrow night.

I’ll spoiler my thoughts…

Obi-Wan is basically starting this episode at the same point Luke does in The Last Jedi - he’s a broken man because he believes he failed his pupil and is responsible for his turning to the Dark Side, and is no longer willing to fight because of it. His arc in this episode also parallels Luke in A New Hope with his initial rejection of the call - Luke goes home to find Owen and Beru killed by stormtroopers, and Obi-Wan comes back to Anchorhead to find Nari’s corpse on display. (A shame; I was expecting him to become Obi-Wan’s new padawan.) I wonder where Nari got a lightsaber from, considering that he must have only been a youngling himself at the time of the Purge - did he grab it off a dead Jedi, or was he trained by another survivor, and if so, will we meet his master?

Third Sister obviously has some kind of past with Obi-Wan. Apparently the Grand Inquisitor was a former Jedi Temple Guard who joined forces with Vader rather than fight him, and his underlings are the former Jedi that he hunted and who likewise surrendered to him. Perhaps she was a youngling who resents him for picking Anakin as his apprentice over her? The interplay between the Inquisitors is also interesting - Grand Inquisitor and Fifth Brother seem to be Lawful Evil types who use diplomacy and the offer of rewards to get their way, whereas she’s a Neutral Evil who just uses the threat of violence, and I have a feeling she’s going to challenge them more openly as the show progresses, especially when they find out she’s kidnapped the daughter of a prince and Senator.

The girl playing young Leia is great and does a great job of channeling Carrie Fisher’s righteous indignation. She’s got a bright future ahead of her. Flea, of all people, is a weird choice for a villain, but he projects just the right amount of general scumminess that he fits as a professional child-snatcher.

I didn’t like the scene where Owen refuses to turn over Obi-Wan. He doesn’t seem to have much reason not to turn him in, but we know he can’t do that because A New Hope happens, and his dismissing it by saying “I didn’t do it for you” is just unsatisfying.

Jimmy Smits is a little uncanny-valley-ish. He’s 17 years older than he was when he filmed ROTS just like Ewan McGregor is, but he’s also six years older than when he played himself in Rogue One, which is set nine years after this. It seems like they tried to de-age him and it didn’t quite take.

C-3PO serving drinks in the background at the reception on Alderaan was a nice touch.

It was a little odd to open the show with a “Previously on” segment featuring clips from 23 years ago, but I guess it was a good way of summarizing Obi-Wan’s life up to this point. I’m not sure what to make of the Order 66 scene with the younglings, though. I was half expecting to see Grogu pop up. I assume one of those kids survives and is going to be someone we’ll see before the end of the series.

It made perfect sense to me. He knows they could have gotten the information about Luke out of Obi Wan eventually.

Yes, but by not talking, he’s almost guaranteeing that Luke will die, since he has every reason to believe Third Sister will go through with her threat and no reason to think Fifth Brother will stop her. It just feels like a clumsily written scene to me.

Honestly, I didn’t make the connection.

BTW wasn’t that the same grand inquisitor that’s in Rebels? I thought that took place after this.

I think so. So I guess the Grand Inquisitor is only mostly dead. There’s a difference between mostly dead and all dead.

Roy Hess became a bounty hunter?

I assume we saw one in the first episode.

This series is taking place in 9 BBY. According to Wookieepedia, his death in Rebels is in 4 BBY, five years from “now”.

I didn’t remember who roy hess was but as soon as I clicked the link I knew who you meant.

I mean, it’s obviously the Third Sister, right?

That was my first thought, but it’s only been ten years. Then again I am horrible at estimating children ages, I would have guessed Leia was five not ten.

I meant the hanged guy.

I dont recall any of the younglings in that scene being black, but I’ll have to double-check after work tonight.

ETA: Per Alessan, there was one. I suppose she vwry well could be Third Sister.

There is - the tall girl in the dark tunic. She’s the one who asks “What do we do now?” at the end.
