Early 90’s (circa 1992-1994)
Not even a one-hit wonder girl group or female singer (so no, it’s not Carly Simon)
Think pop like Bangles or Bananarama
About a breakup and she is sitting/waiting/standing/something by his gate. Almost stalkerish
I’ve been trying for 6 months and no one seems to find it. If you don’t know, do you at least have an idea of who to contact like a radio station that specialized in late 80s early 90s or someone who is an expert in the field?
I am the Boston-to-NYC undefeated champ of “Name that Tune” and my Google-fu is strong.
Please, give me as much information as you have. One lyric and I’d probably get it from memory.
Who does this band sound like? What songs does their sound resemble?
Are you SURE it was the 90’s? Are you SURE she/they were one-hit wonders?
No lyrics available except for some implication that she is by his gate (or maybe driveway).
It’s for my girlfriend and she adds that it was 1992 to 1994 in Antelope Valley, California. The group never even made it to one-hit wonder status but this song did get some airtime for about two weeks. It wasn’t quite bubblegum pop, she compares it more to the girl singers/groups that Prince started in the 80’s.
I’ll try those other two songs and see if they’re the ones. If you can get this, I owe you a beer next time you’re in L.A.
I’m going wayyyy out on a limb here, but could it be a Lush song? I’m thinking of lyrics that maybe sound similar, though they’re not quite on, something like 500 (Shake Baby Shake)? Just lines like “looking now at your famous shape, they don’t make them like you anymore” and later she sings about “I can’t be with you so I’m at the railway station” - yeah, I know, way out there, I’m just thinking of lyrics that may have been jumbled or misunderstood over the years, and thinking of a song that has her waiting…
Anyway, probably not, but worth a shot in the dark, I guess. I remember you started a thread like this before, and it’s been bugging me ever since (else I dreamed it up). Now I must know the answer, as well!
On preview: No, it’s probably not. 500 was released on Lovelife, which came out in early 1996. But I’ll leave the idea out there. I don’t recall Lush ever hitting it huge on this side of the pod, though I could be mistaken.
Cyndi Lauper’s cover of “I Drove All Night?”
This is killing me.
Was it a group? Was it a new-jill-swing kind of sound or an R&B kind of sound?
Was the artist from CA or was that just where she heard the song? On what station did she hear the song? That will help me narrow down formats.
And please, see if you can shake even one lyric out of her.
Are the words “gate” or “driveway” in the song?
Was it guitar-driven? Synth-driven? Were there harmonies? Strings?
You, sir or madam, are ruining my studies.
She doesn’t remember. She knows that it was a woman but concedes that it could be a girl group. As for style, the Bangles.
It was the (yes “THE” not “a”) rock station in Lancaster. I don’t think it was a local band, just a song that had a little success but didn’t get up to hit status.
I’ve tried. Normally when she does this, I get one lyric and can find the song in a few minutes. I’m thinking of taking her into hypnosis to remember.
Typical love song of that time. There were only what? 30 billion of them at that time? :smack:
It’s been ruining mine for six months and this is the only one I havn’t been able to track down. Thanks for the help.
