Occupations of SDMB members

Full-time actuary; part-time law student; occasional professional singing gig

Topologist
That is, one of the mathematicians on the board. I don’t post much 'cause the others generally get it right.
To make a living, I’m a professor, an associate dean, and a textbook author.

I intern for my city’s Preservation department.

For the most part, I enter property listings into a database, which will eventually be put online.

In addition, I am a full-time college student (my major is in History).

Unemployed college student and ex pizza-slinger.

Varied jobs over the years.

Had a paper route as a real young’un.

Moved to being a pit monkey* at a movie theatre.

After that, usher and box office, same thatre.

Spliced into the movie job, worked as a sound tech for a touring musical.

Corner store clerk in an interesting neighbourhood.

Grocery store cashier.

Intern with the government.

Student (needed some education for a real job, damnit).

High Speed Internet Tech Support.

Travel Agent (still doing that but in a strange department of a multinational travel agency).

Oh the stories I could tell

*We worked in the candy pit and looked like monkeys in the uniform.

I work in a factory that makes cardboard boxes. (And cardboard inserts for cardboard boxes. Also, those cardboard circles you find under frozen pizzas.)

On the down side, I’m always filthy with dust and ink at the end of the night. On the plus side, wearing torn, stained jeans and a torn, stained t-shirt is better than wearing a suit and tie to work.

Of the fair number of folks here that work directly with computers, I appear to be the only one specializing in information security. I’m a Level 3 analyst and administrator, which means I say “no” pretty often.

Other careers I’ve seen at the SDMB, but not mentioned in this thread are

Sunglasses salesperson
Barista
Museum curator
Motion picture camera operator
Machinist
Musician

College student, majoring in International Relations.

And indentured servant, er, convienence store clerk.

I had a job that as an electrical engineer I could wear a torn, stained t-shirt to work if I chose.

One day I was at a unrinal in the head at the Naval Air Systems Command (NAVAIR) Headquarters at Jefferson Plaza in Alexandria, VA. dressed in my usual casual manner. NAVAIR had a strict civilian dress code. If the Navy was in Class A uniforms civilians wore suit and tie. If the Navy was in shirts and ties, likewise civilians, etc. In walked Rear Adm. Foxgrover, Commander NAVAIR and took the urinal next to me. I noticed that he kept glancing at me and I thought maybe he was jealous, or something. I went over to the washbasin and he came over and said, “Do you work here, Sir?” “No, I’m from …” at which point he gave me a pained expressions that plainly said, “Well that explains why you’re dressed like a bum.” and walked out.

Resident Advisor at a large state school.

You naked kids get outa’ my hallway and off my lawn.

I work for an on-line sex zine that promotes safe(er)-sex, sexuality, lifestyles, understanding of lifestyles, education, coverage of events, reviews (of toys, books, - you wouldn’t believe the freebies I get). I am a professional journalist with over 200+ bylines to my name which isn’t bad for a bi-weekly publication. I love my press pass. I have over 200,000 unique hits on my name and articles per day. I’ve been asked as an authority on several different topics by other print publications, television shows, and authors.

I write about sex. As such, I have to try a lot of different things so I can try to write from an understanding of the audience - of course there are some impractical generalities that go along with this, but I do my best.

I like what I do. Most of the time. But I’ve seen enough porn that it makes me laugh, interviewed enough “celebrities” whom I now realize were hired for assets and not talent or mental ability, and I’ve tried enough toys that were just CRAP. I don’t write about those. We just try to write about the good ones.

So, that’s me. I don’t know for how much longer, but it’s me now, and has been for over three years. I won’t be ashamed of my job if I ever go into the market again cause I’ve done some damn god writing and investigative journalism. The only thing I hate is that I can’t discuss 2257 and Gonzales because we’re trying to fly under the radar at the moment. Anyone else hear of Max Hardcore and how his offices were “raided” with SHOTGUNS shot off through the floor?

Politics is a bitch. But I am a member of the Free Speech Coalition and their fight, and Barbara Nietze (sp?) and her fight as well. Slippery slope guys.

Off the soapbox now.

Inky

Computer programmer, slot machine software. Formerly debit card terminals and processing systems, before that, BBS Software (Major BBS/Worldgroup, anyone?)

I don’t gamble.

I run a small (30 - 35 person) computer software company specializing in retail point of sale software. My own background: a degree and PhD in Biochemistry, then took a job as a computer programmer.

I’m one of the linguists (still in school, yes, but have a few papers to my name). Specifically, I’m a sociophonetcian, which is the unholy melding of sociolinguistics and phonetics. My SO, who occasionally uses my screename, is a mathmatician, specifically a set theorist. We have fights over whose specialty is more useless in the real world.

Professional do-gooder. I work for a non-profit organization that provides vocational, residential, day programs, respite and family support services to persons with disabilities. I’m also the rules/regs/policies/procedures sob. Everybody loves me.

Cool! I worked at a box factory for a little over a year myself. We made pizza boxes (Pizza hut, IMO’s, Breadeaux, etc), FedEx boxes, Schwinns boxes, and several other types as well. I remember those dirty and hot days and nights.

Oh, unemployed student at the moment.

Telecom Project Manager here. I design and oversee the construction of data centers, fiber optic cabling (both inside plant and outside plant), and wireless data transmission facilities (towers and radio sites).

Mainframe computer applications programmer for the past seventeen years. In the more-distant past I have been: a truck driver, professional rock guitarist (I still play professionally, part-time), a technician in a venom lab (I extracted venom from snakes, toads, spiders and scorpions), a car salesman, a construction worker, a security guard, an HVAC installer, a printing press mechanic, a printing salesman and a warehouse manager.

Well, I must be the one cop. I thought there were a couple of others.

I’ve been a cop for 18 years, doing most of the possible assignments in a small agency. Before that I had a variety of jobs, as well as being a vounteer firefighter/EMT.

As as sideline, I’m a UFO ivestigator (I’ll have to start a "Ask the . . . " thread about this eventually.
