I think the idea that there’s a huge diversity of perspective here right now is suspect. It’s pretty true historically, but I really don’t think if you did a broad survey of active posters in the last month, or whatever, you’d find anything like the diversity of political opinion that Kimstu suggested.

Well, IIRC I pulled all my examples of SDMB differences of opinion from threads that were active within the last few months, at longest. Which of my identifications of said differences of opinion are you claiming were incorrect?

We’ve got Democrats and Republicans, socialists and libertarians, Christians and Jews and atheists and agnostics and Buddhists and Muslims. We’ve got GMO advocates and GMO opponents, nuclear-power enthusiasts and anti-nukers. organic farmers and organic-farming skeptics. We’ve got posters who think that Israel/Palestine problems are primarily the fault of the Palestinians and posters who think they’re primarily the fault of the Israelis. We’ve got posters who believe that anti-transgender prejudice is currently more of a societal threat than transgender activism and posters who believe the opposite. We’ve got posters who are free-speech absolutists and posters who argue that free-speech absolutism is fostering a resurgence of oppression. We’ve got posters who advocate for gun rights and posters in favor of repealing the Second Amendment. We’ve got posters concerned about “cancel culture” and posters concerned about “cancel culture” concerns being a reactionary scam.

I still think it’s fair to describe the SDMB as a kind of bubble. Very conservative and radical left wing spaces do plenty of posting center-left neoliberal ideas and articles for the purpose of ridiculing them, but that doesn’t make them not bubbles.

Sure, if you disregard all our differences of opinion, we’re a hivemind, and if you disregard all our awareness of the diversity of claims and viewpoints outside the SDMB, we’re a bubble. Certainly can’t argue with that.

I don’t read all that much of our resident mollusc’s “contribution” to the board, but when he accuses us of being in a bubble, I read that as “information bubble.” It’s been suggested that he perhaps intends to convey a meaning of a bubble of a different sort, but I haven’t seen evidence that would persuade me of that.

I interpreted that as implying “bubble” = lack of diversity of information and “hive” = lack of diversity of opinion. Neither of which, as I noted, is applicable to the SDMB.

I could keep quibbling but… why bother? I’m pretty sure we’re all on the same page in the end: the members of this message board are not of one mind on every subject, and octopus’s claims amount to a slippery slope argument.

The destruction and chaos was largely due to the actions of conservative nuts like Rittenhouse and, most significantly, the actions of the Trump administration, which is on record as wanting to encourage and increase the chaos and violence.

If you actually cared about opposing violence, you would recognize this. That you’ve ignored it, again and again, when the Trump admin is on record favoring chaos and violence, demonstrates that you don’t actually care about opposing violence, only in slandering liberals.
