I don’t think we actually disagree enough to make it worth it to continue arguing, but media, finance, colleges etc. are all going to concentrate in cities. I don’t think it’s necessary to correct this, but if there’s a way to mitigate the effects while minimizing any possible side effects I don’t particularly see why not.
The differences you mention are present in cities too.
I don’t disagree with anything. I’m just curious what would be the rationale.
I’m trying to follow you line of reasoning: Someone who isolates themselves from society should get more say in how to run that society?
Well I don’t view it as someone choosing to isolate themselves from society. I think most people live where they do either because that’s where they were born or out of economic necessity and there are sometimes marginal adjustments you can make to alleviate power imbalances. I’m not convinced that any method we could try would actually achieve this in the US without adverse consequences.
And of course there are other imbalances. One that I definitely think should actually happen in the real world, not just for the sake of argument, is that Native American tribes should get seats in the house and senate, and given that we have the EC, in that too.
That would be my point. The people in cities that have outsized influence do so because they chose a career that puts them front and center. There are plenty of people in cities that do not have careers in politics, media, finance or education. How are you (@DeadTreasSecretaries) correcting the lack of influence of low-profile city-dwellers? Or better: Why?
Well I personally am not doing anything to correct anything. I don’t think this imbalance is so important that we absolutely need to do something about it, but in the hypothetical scenario that we had already got rid of the senate and the electoral college, and I was in a position to expend zero political capital to give people in rural areas like 1.25 votes instead of 1 or something, I would do it. If there was a way to figure out every schlub who lives in a city but doesn’t get to rub elbows with politicians and business leaders 1.25 votes instead of 1 I’d do that too.
EDIT: I’ll also say that (while once again it is a much smaller problem than the EC right now) everyone who lives in the same city on some level has to drink the same water and breathe the same air. So as a practical matter, even if someone lives in a city and doesn’t ever get to really have an influence on the most powerful people around them, it’s a lot easier for those powerful people to notice problems that affect everyone in their vicinity.
Why should tribes get senators and reps just for being a tribe?
Why should Nebraska get senators and reps just for being a state? The tribes, at least, have the advantage of “we were here first”. Nebraska? They got nothin’.nothing.
Eta: there are of course the political realities of how the current tribes got their tribal status, and which groups did and did not get tribal status, and that’s certainly worth a discussion.
Basically the same reason it would be nice to do it for rural voters, but also add in the centuries of oppression Native Americans have faced.
I would like to announce the complete success of this thread.
To date, our 8 legged friend has posted a total of 236 times here, compared with the next most prolific poster at 52 followed by another at 40.
This has certainly achieved it’s goals!
And how’s that a success by any metric?
Octopus here’s your own thread to shit all over
And the shitting commenced.
Happy shitting!
Octopus, now do you see that it’s the President and many of his supporters who are far, far more in favor of violence than any prominent Democrats and progressive activists?
Here’s what the slimy little shitstain has to say about this:
He supports open insurrection.
Not surprised at all.
Mother fucker doesn’t see an attack on our government at its core as more than a sick joke.
You hypocrites just can’t stand when your hypocrisy is illuminated.
Lolol
You’re just a troll. Go away, troll. You don’t care about real violence or anything else aside from trolling.
