Odd foods your pets love: second edition

Two more popcorn cats here. Marty and Cuervo both come running at the sound of it popping. Cuervo will devour it, while Marty just licks it, sucks on the mush for a while then leaves it for someone to clean up.

Oh **MBG **you just reminded me that Kitt also demands popcorn! He snuggles down between my husband and I on the bed at movie time and munches on popcorn. He prefers Orville.

I had two dogs (now sadly departed) that would lick the deodorant or perfume off you if given the chance. Weirdos.

The strangest thing my dogs like is rabbit poop. To the point where they sometimes need to be muzzled when in the yard. For some reason ‘processed’ greens are more appealing than fresh ones. :smack:

The only odd things the dogs liked was Princess’ passion for raw carrots. The cats on the other hand…
Salt used to go insane over donuts and bread, ripping open the packages for them. And Toi adored raw pizza dough.

Shamus, one of the current cats, has a sweet-tooth. He’ll eat poptarts and rice krispie treats, and I when I gave into his begging for a piece of my chocolate croissant he gobbled the piece I offered him (just the outermost, chocolate-less layer, ftr.) He thinks he likes popcorn, but is always disappointed when we give it to him.

Our sweet departed dwarf hamster, Seashell, once jumped on my husband’s plate as we were finishing breakfast (we had let her out to run around the table) and started polishing off his scrambled eggs.

In the past, our hams have gone bananas for peanut butter, yogurt, toast, puppy-sized Milk Bones (a dwarf hamster attempting in vain to stuff one of those suckers into a cheek pouch is a sight to see) and even leftover turkey from a SCA feast, which they ate out of my hands and then started licking my fingers to get all the tasty goodness.

I can’t eat pistachios without one of the 2 cats immediatly coming for his share. He eats them up with enthusiasm.

I thought that was weird, but when I bring it up (not often) I sometimes hear others say the same thing.

My orange tabby, Gustav Ignatius, adores olives and sherbet. (Not that he gets more than a tiny taste of either one of them.)

My dog loves rabbit poop, too. Thinks it’s candy. This time of year I have a difficult time getting him to do any pooping (or peeing) himself because he’s too busy sniffing around for the little buggers. He thinks the litter box is a buffet, too, and we have to have a gate up so he can’t get to it.

Both of my dog’s favorite food is french fries. They would forsake all other nourishment in the world if they could subsist on french fries. They aren’t picky about where they come from, either. They’ll both try other people foods, but there’s nothing like the hardcore begging for potatoey goodness. Marley will just about turn himself inside out if you make him wait.

My cats don’t do people food. That’s a good thing. Having a cat in your face when you’re trying to eat is annoying because they’re sneaky and smart.

I once had a cat that would go batshit insane over corn on the cob. If you gave her one, she’d carry it around and growl if anyone got near her until she was finished with it.

My dog will all but ignore popcorn and most boxed cereals - golden grahams, cherios, etc.

The popcorn, she might snuffle a bit, and maybe lick off some salt, but she won’t actually eat popcorn.

What really surprised me was just last night. I was sauteeing a pan full of onions and one lept out and landed on the floor. She ran over and gobbled it up as it it was made of bacon-wrapped cat poop. Didn’t even wait for it to cool off.

The dogs will eat pretty much anything–Widget mostly because he sees me eating it and he’s a total “me too” boy. Space the Malemute is passionately fond of vegetables and fruit, most especially tomatoes. She also loves eating small live creatures whole, but that’s a whole 'nother fetish.

Old cat Stiggs doesn’t like anything that isn’t cat food (preferably fish based) served in a bowl on the floor, although he’ll occasionally deign to eat a bit of roasted chicken breast as long as it’s in the bowl. Pratchett, on the other hand will not only eat any meat right from the hand but will stand on his hind legs for it and will also reach out with a paw to hook it right from the plate or out of your mouth. He has a terrible sweet tooth and is very fond of Little Debbie pecan pies which he stabbity stabs with his pointy cat teeth. I can’t enjoy a slice of key lime pie without the reprobate insisting that at least one good size chunk WITH graham cracker crust be fed to him off my fork. He loves potato chips and Wheat Thins and Cheetos too, again making us laugh with his stabby tooth action. Just last night I was macking down on some cherry pie filling and he insisted he be fed a full tablespoon of the gooey part that isn’t actually a cherry, just snarfed it right down. Then nothing would do that I give him yet another spoonful, the great pig! He’s weird…

Forgot about the other thing that Marley likes. Tomatoes.

They are not safe left on the counter for any reason. He’ll snatch them when we aren’t looking, take them outside and chow down. We had a tomato plant this last summer, and he’d do what he could to reach through the fence to the closest ones and pick them right off the vine.

Weird ass dog.

My cats would never eat people food until they were put on a diet. Now Boris will eat almost anything. What he loves, though, is to steal pasta out of the colander in the sink while it’s draining. He also loves plastic bags. He would eat them all day if he could. He opens my cabinets and hunts for anything plastic to eat. It’s amazing how much plastic you find when you try to cat-proof a house. He can also not be trusted with green olives. They make him mean. His sister just acts like she is on catnip but he starts biting everything within reach when he smells them.

All of our dogs have liked raisins, apples, broccoli, carrots (raw or cooked), avocados (we used to live in Mexico near a major avocado-growing region, so we could get a $5 sack every week and feed the squishy ones to the dogs), and most other non-bitter, non-sour fruits and vegetables, as well as all bread / cracker / cookie-type foods, and popcorn.

We’ve only had one dog ever that would eat oranges, and he loved them; if you were eating an orange he’d beg for some with the fervour our other dogs reserved for chicken and meat. The other dogs thought he was just plain nuts.
