Of free servers, websites and AOL withdrawl symptoms..

For the past three or four years I’ve been doing some freelance web sites for some friends, coworkers and referrals from the two.

I did all my tweaking and designing on AOL, in fact I kept most of my background files, GIFs and other style elements, right on my own, free AOL space. After the work was done, I’d show the site to the interested party, and upon receiving approval, I’d simply transfers the files for the newly built page unto the friend/costumer’s server, and voila! job finished. Since then, I’ve moved to the Dominican Republic, and I am no longer using AOL.

Hopefully, this is where some of you might come in, since I’d like to continue doing the same work here.

I’ve tried Googling “free server” “free web pages” and assorted other combos, in hopes of finding a server that I can use for the same purpose. And sure enough, I literally get 100s of hits for each of those queries. Problem is, I find it all extremely confusing, an Internet jungle that makes me long for my simpler days on AOL – yes, I know, most “pros” think they suck and all that, but for my needs, it was perfect.

So, the question is, anyone out there that can recommend a particular site for the above requirements? Not looking for lots of space, just some place reliable, not cluttered with popups and hidden costs.

Yes, I’m fully aware beggars can’t be choosers, but any help on this matter would be greatly appreciated.
At the very least it buys you a Presidente or two should you happen to be in the area. Though I don’t know too many people that just “happen to be” in a small island in the Caribbean

Thanks in advance.

What exactly are you having problems understanding?

Getting free webspace without pop-ups is most likely impossible as the hosting service has to make money somehow.

You could always zip the files for the web page and email them to a friend on AOL to host for you.

It’s not really a problem with “understanding” as much as “confusion” with the wide number of options/choices. Thus I was hoping to get some recomendations for some sites in particular from people with positive experiences using them – narrow the choices.

Mods,

Reading sleestak’s answer made me realize I am not looking for a ‘right’ answer to a direct question. Thus making this more a poll… posted on the wrong thread? :smack:

My apologies if that’s the case.

RedFury, who is your ISP right now? Do you know if they give you free web space?

If you are using dialup, and not getting free space (well, not “free” but included in your contract), perhaps you should look for another dialup in your area that does offer this.

If you have cable or DSL that is your only option in your area (like me…only I do get free space), and you can’t switch, check out these two recent threads for help:

And if those don’t tickle your fancy, consider paying $5-10 a month for a few megs of space on the net. I have my own server but I still keep around my $9.95/mo account with www.addr.com to keep stuff like family pictures, HTML junk, MP3s and whatever other non-work-related crap I want. It’s pretty worth it, especially if you want to continue with your venture into making Web sites.
