Official 83rd Academy Awards thread

If it’s people who dedicated their lives to entertainment, it’s totally appropriate to be entertaining. This is the Oscars, not their funerals - the montage should be respectful and heartening, but also entertaining and sentimental.

I didn’t like the way they did it this year - they should have included clips of the movies the people worked on.

Yeah, which is also why it sort of annoys me the way that they do art direction and cinematography right at the beginning (and people erroneously shrug them off as being “technical” awards which don’t count), but then save the acting awards until right before best picture.

Speaking of which…

Nah, this one is just particularly bad. It wasn’t this bad last year.

You know, I really liked James Franco before this show, but he’s really coming across as a tool.

Are you new here?

Sorry, a little emotional there. I was a big fan of some of the people who died, especially Sally Menke.

Oh, they’re doing the pre-buttering of the actress and actor noms again this year. Don’t really like that.

Ok. Best Actress. This, frankly, is a very competitive category this year.

Don’t tease me! Don’t tempt me! Don’t give me false hope!!!

(Sigh. Yeah, I’ll probably be here next year. Dammit.)

I saw an interview with Jennifer Lawrence from Winter’s Bone and she said she was obsessed with Jeff Bridges and was most looking forward to meeting him. So, it really seemed like she had a thrill on her face when he called out “Jennifer!”
That’s pretty awesome.

I am hoping for Natalie Portman in this category. She was really good.

Funny.

Natalie Portman! YES!!

Best Actress: Natalie Portman - Black Swan

I would have given my next-born-child to hear Jeff say “TRON!”

Oh well.

Yay Natalie!!! She earned her oscar.

speaking of which, I love Bill Maher’s tweet on this - “No African American nominees? If you’re black and want to make it on Hollywood this year, you better be a swan”

Natalie Portman?! Really? I mean, she was fine but all she had to do was look increasingly insane for two hours and flinch and scratch her back. Guess she’s getting it for dedicating a year of her life to ballet training and yet not being able to do anything interesting with her fingers fergawdsakes.

A shoutout to Luc Besson!

Too bad Anette Bening was nominated but not Julianne Moore. Too bad Michelle Williams was nominated but not Ryan Gosling.

Is Franco spending less time onstage the longer the show goes on?

Wasn’t it just a few years ago that a big deal was made of the phrasing returning to “And the winner is …”? Now we’re back to “And the Oscar goes to …”? I keep wondering who it is that is pushing this participation-trophies-for-everyone mindset in our society. Is this all coming from California?

I also noticed the “no clapping” during the death montage. If we’re going for the “young and hip” Oscars, why not have Janelle Monae sing her version of “Smile” instead of Celine Dion?

The autotune was awful. It will not die. I had to mute it. It isn’t creative, and it isn’t new, and it isn’t interesting. It’s lazy. Everyone just needs to stop.

This show has been boring.

OK, Sandra Bullock is cracking me up with her left-handed compliments.
