Official 83rd Academy Awards thread

This isn’t supposed to be a box office contest. If it was, they wouldn’t need to send out ballots every year. It should go to the best movie, regardless of its financial success.

The Kings Speech has already grossed a quarter-billion dollars worldwide, and has out-earned TSN in both the US and worldwide grosses.

Hell, at least it wasn’t as bad as when THE LION KING won over RAGTIME. Whoops, wrong genre.

See you next year! <air-kisses the more popular posters, ignores the rest, flounces off>

As much as I loved Inception and The Social Network, The King’s Speech was a fantastic and thoroughly entertaining film that deserved its win tonight.

I agree. She was beautiful, elegant and poised while being fun, happy, and upbeat at the same time. I was impressed with the way she handled herself onstage (including the “flub” as she was introducing Sandra Bullock) and with the way she threw herself into the roles she was playing in each of the nominated movies at the beginning of the show. She never seemed to feel awkward or ill at ease and was just a total delight. I’d be more than happy to see her back again.

I thought this year’s show was pretty dull, myself. Neither Hathaway or Franco did anything for me. They should get Ricky Gervaise next year.

Sorry for not being clear. I wasn’t arguing against The King’s Speech winning; it was actually the film I was rooting for. I took fusoya’s comments to be hyperbole because neither of his/her favorites won. And though box office numbers certainly shouldn’t determine who wins they do figure into things in different ways.

Well, consider my ignorance fought. From all the buzz I thought TSN was cleaning up at the box office and The King’s Speech was reaching a more limited audience. It’s actually a pleasant surprise to find out there is a broader audience out there for films of this caliber.

Wouldn’t that be a hoot?

Only if they can get Fat Ricky… He’s hilarious. Thin Ricky just comes off as mean.

I wish the Internet existed back when Hope and Carson were hosting… Wonder what those Oscar threads would have been like.

That had to be the dullest Oscar show ever. The kids of PS22, at least, brought a little life to the thing at the end.

It was so predictable with no upsets or surprises. Everything that was expected to win won.

I wanted Jacki Weaver to win so badly but she was always such an outside chance that I should be glad she was even nominated. Her loss mixed with how fucking terrible the Original Song category was (made worse by the fact that several much better songs on the longlist didn’t make it) meant that this was all a bit blah, but I did enjoy the ceremony as I do every year.

They should bring back the 5-former-winners format for presenting the acting categories, I really liked that.

Yet another Oscar victory for empty, ugly, middlebrow crowd-pleasers. Hooray.

Aww, who am I kidding? It’s not like the other movies were that much better.

Also: if anybody wants to get me an Xmas present, I would just love some Anne Hathaway. Oh my yes.

17/24 picks.

Seeing some of the clips again, I think I enjoyed The social Network the most of all of them, and probably Jessie Eisenberg’s performance the most in the acting category. That scene where he’s being deposed, and he tells off the lawyers when he gets asked if “we deserve your full attention” is just great. He’s so arrogant and condescending, yet also so articulate, precise and correct. Textbook pwnage. I love that scene. He’s an arrogant prick, but that doesn’t mean he’s wrong. I think that’s essentially the whole point of the movie.

Yes! I was so happy to see the AutotuneTheNews/Schmoyoho folks get the work, but I wish they had got some credit.

Dear lord, no!

Only if Bruce Vilanch is sent on a long trip on a slow boat. I can always tell his unfunny jokes. I refer to it as “The Stench of Vilanch”.

Exactly. These are all creative people (well, maybe not the agent) deserving of respect, even if only their peers know why. I suspect they were kept from applauding by having a song being sung live. Great idea, and one I hope they stick with in the future…though I would prefer it not be Celine Dion.

Hunh. Just finished the thread. I wasn’t as bothered Franco’s work as some here - I thought that he provided a nice tonic, at times, to Anne’s enthusiasm, tho’ she was surely great. Liked the toned down nature of the show - no over-sized production numbers with 100 dancers on the stage was nice. 'Twas a shame to not get to hear speeches from Eli or Francis (while we get 10 minutes of Kirk? (tho he did have a couple of entertaining moments)).
I understand the backing of TSN and Inception here over TKS. Well, that’s not entirely true -* TSN* was nice, definitely captivating, but the fact that there was no real protagonist bothered me; the Zuckerberg character may be a worthy anti-hero to some, but to me, he’s just a opportunistic, backstabbing douche - not that that’s a bad thing to be utilized for film - and, well, there were other movies which I liked more.
I do think that Inception will have greater success than many of the other noms (imho, TS3 will trump all).
My own favorite this year was The Fighter.

Yay, Inception didn’t win! Was personally rooting for Social Network, but King’s Speech was also fantastic.

Although it was hardly a longshot, I just want to mention this post from December 8:

Utterly predictable, considering the way the Academy picks its winners. A film about a popular British monarch who overcomes personal physical adversity? Even before Colin Firth took the role the script practically had Oscars stapled to it.

I think it’s about time to start a Stephen Colbert campaign for next year.

I always liked this take on what would be automatic Oscar bait.

Well it’s made nothing like Inception did but it made more at the box office than The Social Network, even in the US. And it was made for $15m unlike Inception’s $160m budget and The Social Network’s $40m. So in terms of return on investment…

Horribly boring Oscars. I thought Anne Hathaway was embarrassingly bad. She kept trying to breathe life into the show with over-enthusiastic clapping and "Wooo!"s. She is a lovely girl, but she has the personality of iceburg lettuce.

It was interesting that the only time that I LOL’d during the entire ceremony was when they showed clips of Bob Hope hosting the Oscars:

“Welcome to Oscar Night. Or, as they call it in my house, Passover.”
