Not only do you have the gall to start such a moronic thread but…
You start it after you’ve threatened to leave?
Because you couldn’t convert anyone to Christianity?
And because God himself told you to move on?
Listen to God’s advice. Go away.

Zelda 2: the Adventure of ____
When I saw that thread, I just assumed the OP had a typo, and was supposed to say “use the Straight Dope Message Board to masturbate.” It seemed the only logical explanation for the thread, especially after I noted that Nomadic_One said yes.
Linky McLinkerson . . . you have a call on the white courtesy phone.
I really scrolled up to see what Linky McLinkerson had to say.
Would’nt Linky Mclinkerson have a blue/grey courtesy phone?
I’m just sayin’.
That has got to be the most original call for a link I’ve seen in my brief history here.
Wow. Can’t say much more without my head exploding.
I thought it was kinda funny.
So it’s better to be an a$$ then to try and be lighthearted?
IMO, the thread was moronic. But that’s beside the main point - he did this after “leaving” because after he found that he couldn’t convert anyone on the board, God allegedly told him to move on.
“I’m leaving!” posts are almost always falsehoods. They’re basically deliberate lies, posted in order to get a reaction. It’s a form of trolling that’s both easy and largely safe to engage in, in a ban avoidance sense at least, which is why it’s so common.
I’m leaving.
Please don’t go. Please stay. I can change.
Well, I can’t. Whaddaya get for a quarter again, three dimes, or four?
Four dimes for a quarter? What are you, Canadian?
Has the “I’m leaving” gambit ever actually worked out well for anyone? I mean has anybody ever gotten a stream of posts pleading for them to stay or is it always the “don’t let the doorknob hit you in the ass” variety of responses?
Just curious.
(Of course, there is an occasional poster who is leaving for some genuine, non-whiny reason like they’re going to fight a war or something. I’m not including those people in my question)
In my own limited experience, it seems that hereabouts, nope, don’t work. Every huffy “Well, That’s It Then, I’m Leaving” type thread garners almost entirely “buh bye now” type responses.*
Usually, it seems, from frustrated posters who’ve had enough of the huffy one’s nonsense, be it real or imagined.
Elsewhere on teh Intarweb, however…
I’ve seen a couple that did spawn “You Can’t Leave, All The Plants Will Die” pity parties for the one leaving, but primarily on fairly small message boards/mailing lists with mostly longterm members. And even then it ain’t all that common. YMMV
*[sub]There are sometimes genuinely compassionate responses from folks willing to give the poster in question a second chance, but the majority of respondants do seem to take a direct 180 from the intended/hoped for response.[/sub]
But he’s violating God’s orders!
And, really, I don’t want him here any more than God does.
Euty leaving had a couple of people expressing regret.
