You could search in ATMB and find this discussed. If memory serves, the answer is that no one is certain. It seems that one hamster places your new post in a thread, then a second hamster increments your post count. The second hamster naps on the job. You might also notice that when a post fails to increment your post count, it also fails to increase the number of posts to the thread - it’s almost as if you never even posted, but you have.
