Oh good Lord!!!! Not Nipples!!!!!!

tosses in the word “turgid” …* runs*

I thought the poll was creepy. But I didn’t react with outrage, nor did I see anyone else react with outrage. The reaction was more a mild rebuke than a call to arms.

I keep hoping that at 50+, I’d have learned not to be so darned naive. But until I saw people mention it in this thread (I think there might have been a few complaints in the original thread as well), it never occurred to me that a poll like that would be masturbatory fodder. It just seemed too plain and clinical, to me it read like plain (albeit thorough) curiosity. More like a “just the facts ma’am” kind of thing. I mean, aren’t men usually visually stimulated (pics, real girls in miniskirts etc?), and not so much textually? (Dear Penthouse notwithstanding).

And as to the questions about the fake penis survey, sorry I meant to answer this earlier. Honestly? I’d find that more humorous than creepy. Unless penis is imminent, I don’t generally give it a whole lot of thought.

Yeah, well, don’t believe everything you read. Some would have you believe it is also evidence that I am a serial killer.

What gets me off is straw men! The wilder the hotter! I’ll fap to this post for years!

Sounds like your personal problem.

Did you read the actual OP, or just the poll? I could maybe understand having that impression from the poll alone, but the OP goes on for several lines about Fear Itself’s love of “nipply goodness”. If a doctor ever said anything like that to me in a clinical context I’d be making a complaint to the medical board.

Is that what this is all about? “Nipply goodness” ?

Wow.

I point to the above question as further proof that Fear Itself does not understand social norms. He can’t grasp why people might be upset.

It is clear that some people are upset. It is also clear that some are not. Are you saying those people don’t understand social norms either? Whose norms? Yours? It’s a very diverse readership out there. Do you speak for all of them?

No, I never said that

The norms of the SDMB.

I never claimed to.

So if I created a thread for the sole purpose of posting links to naked pictures of myself, that is within SDMB social norms? But if I post an anonymous poll about the diversity of nipples, that would be too far? Those are some seriously broad social norms.

First, I created that thread so that all Dopers could post naked pictures of themselves, not just so that I could.

For the most part, yes. Judging from the general lack of threadsh*tting in that thread (my memory may be off), and the length of the Pit thread on it, less people found the NSFW pic thread creepy than found your poll creepy.

And an intelligent argument could be made that you thought you were within the norms. Various intelligent arguments could be made to defend your position and various stratagems taken.

Instead, you refuse to defend yourself in the main thread. In this thread, you make jokes, throw out strawmen and finally resorted to personal attacks.

Had I gotten the same response you have, I would have apologized for creeping people out, cited precedent threads that made me think I was within the SDMB social norms, promised to be more careful in the future and expressed remorse that I made damn sure people knew was genuine.

You’ve done none of those things.

I still don’t know what strawmen you are talking about, and I have made no personal attacks.

Since the reception to my poll has been mixed, I certainly feel no obligation to meet your demands for contrition. Unless you think you represent the board norms, of course.

Seriously, you’d think people were comparing him to Hannibal Lector.

Perhaps, Fear Itself, instead of whining about how persecuted and misunderstood you are, you could actually explain your purpose in starting such a thread?

I was curious about nipple diversity. I thought I made that clear in the OP. The number of options in the poll reflects that diversity; I have frequently posted polls with a large number of choices. I once posted a poll about ice cream with 35 choices; another about pornography with 59 choices. It’s how I roll; I get tired of polls where half the respondents say “You forgot X!”

I get it, some people thought it was creepy. I presented it with what I thought was a light-hearted approach. I would not have anticipated that there were some to whom nipples are a sacred topic, about which fun must not be poked. The thing that surprised me most were the people who mistook completeness for prurience. Participation was voluntary and anonymous; I don’t see how that is more creepy than asking people to post actual nude photos of themselves, or talk in graphic detail about pain during sex. If you see any consistency in that, perhaps you can explain it to me.

I don’t think it is an overstatement to suggest there are some here who like to be offended, and who like nothing better than a good dogpile over trivial subjects. And yes, in the grand scheme of things, nipples are trivial. You’ve got nipples, I’ve got nipples, all god’s chillen gots nipples. There are things of a far more erotic nature to get the vapors about. But if that is what floats your boat, far be it from me to tell you how to get your jollies. Apparently that would be against social norms.

He should be so lucky. The Silence of the Lambs character I was alluding to was Jame Gumb (“Buffalo Bill”), the one who refers to his victims as “it” and is obsessed with the quality of their skin, which he cuts off their bodies and uses to make a “woman suit”.

That said, I think there is a large difference between saying that a post was disturbing in a way that reminded me of Silence of the Lambs (a work of fiction) and saying that the poster is actually a serial killer, and I feel I was pretty clearly doing the former.

It wasn’t a demand of any kind. I was just saying what I would do in your place. You did take some of those steps in your last post.

Regarding your question about the ‘pain during sex thread’, it’s my feeling that posters saw this as a request for medical advice rather than anything prurient. Indeed, the last time I checked that thread the most common response was ‘pain like that is not normal. Please consult your doctor.’

You read a more detailed than normal poll about nipples and it reminds you of a character who murders women and wears their skin. And he’s the one with issues. Okay.
