I’ve been busy, and I tend to DVR things; so I haven’t watched movies I’ve been meaning to. I did finally watch The Godfather films again this past weekend, but there are other films I’ll think about and think, ‘Man, it’s about time I watched that one again.’ Here are some that come immediately to mind:
[del]The Godfather[/del] [del]The Godfather: Part II[/del] [del]The Godfather: Part III[/del] Jaws
1941
Air America
The Pirates of Penzance
Blade Runner
Unforgiven
Blazing Saddles
Ugh, why bother? Imho, the only way I would watch the cable/network TV version of anything is if a) I already own it on DVD, b) it’s PG rated or lower so hopefully they didn’t make any changes, and c) it’s impossible to get otherwise. To me, I usually go the opposite way: TV first to see if I like it, rent it years later to see if I still like it, then buying it on DVD to get the commentary and extras if I really like it.
These are movies I have on DVD, but haven’t watched in a while.
The reason is that I’ve been busy, and I’ve been DVR-ing a bunch of shows that I still haven’t gotten through. I record films from the unedited movie channels, so that’s no problem. But the DVR is taking up time I could use to watch my DVDs. The shows I’m listing are DVDs I own.
1941? Really? Is this penance or something? Ten Hail Mary’s, 2 viewings of 1941, and a kick in the head? You’ve got to lay off the honesty in the confessional booth, Johnny!
For me:
[del]Full Metal Jacket[/del] Easy Rider (It irks me that I haven’t had time to watch this since Dennis Hopper went to the great Hippy Trippy Outfitting Shop in the Sky.) Blazing Saddles Ginger Snaps 3 (Oddly enough, I hate the other two). Doctor Strangelove The Cat in the Hat (Yeah, I know, I know!) Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (Oh, come on!! It was a fun little film.) Bringing out the Dead McHale’s Navy (I know, I know!!)
. . .
OK, Johnny, maybe I shouldn’t have laughed at you for liking 1941.
OK, OK, no need for that!! Let’s just calm down, hit the back button on the IMDB quotes page, take a deep breath, and settle this with a conversation like the professional movie geeks we are.

Well all right, I’m not a professional movie geek, but I do look kind of like Roger Ebert from the neck down.
Incidentally, I think Island In The Sky has one of the best bits of acting John Wayne ever did. The film is about the crew of a DC-3 that was forced to land on a frozen lake somewhere in Canada. Just when they think they’ve been found, John Wayne realises they haven’t been. Wayne says, ‘I guess we’re awful hard to see down here. Harder than we thought.’ It looks as if he’s about to cry, he’s so crestfallen.
I just found out the boyfriend had never seen The Music Man. So I got it for him, and now I have to direct his new barbershop quartet. Catching people up on movies can be hazardous to your health.
Well, hell. I just noticed yesterday that I have King Kong on DVD. (Coincidentally, it was just a couple up in the stack from Patton.) Only it turns out it’s the new one. I’ll have to rectify the situation eventually. I used to have the original on four 400’ super-8 reels, but I sold it nearly a decade ago.
<hijack> I’ve seen the movie and read the book, and it’s obvious that Ernest K. Gann, the author of the book and the screen writer never flew over north eastern Quebec. There are no mountain range of the height described in the area.</hijack>
The other day I put Arthur on my ‘watch instantly’ Netflix queue. I haven’t seen it since college, over 20 years ago, when my friends and I used to quote it on a regular basis. I think I’ll watch it tonight.
I watch the following movies on at least an annual basis, if not more frequently:
Jaws
Close Encounters…
The Hunt For Red October
The Shining
Alien
Aliens
