Glad you did. Lady Chance and your babies deserve nothing less. Be well, Sir.
Damn, I’m tired. Yesterday, I had to work the county government booth at the county fair, and attend a late night meeting dealing with the Great Lakes basin and the threat of water withdrawl. Today, it was an early morning meeting in Cleveland to study regional population projections, followed by … more at the county fair. Just got home.
I just want to cocoon. Two hours to Columbus now just seems …anyhow, I’m sorry.
Going to sleep now. (been trying for a while) getting up at 6. This will be fun.
I thought I posted a decline with regrets! Maybe not. I would love to be there though (some that have promised attendence I hold in high regard).
If I didn’t have a damn meeting today, I’d be there with bells on (my best bells BTW). Have fun and be safe. I just hope that there’s another Dopefest somewhere near here soon. Ohio is halfway between alot of places.
It’s just about 8 am (yawn) and Opal should be here any minute to pick us up. See you in 5+ hours!
due to an alarm clock malfunction, we will be about 2 hours behind schedule! sorry! (this is nyctea, btw) we are on the road, I am using chris’s palm thingie! see u guys later!
Great party, thanks Jonathan! Too bad y’all were a little late – me and Mr. E left at 5 and no one but UncleBeer, Samclem and norinew were there. I really wanted to meet everyone, maybe next time!
Thanks for having us!
I wish I could have been there - unfortunately, I’m driving to Youngstown tomorrow to apartment hunt. My schedule didn’t allow me to get out of Knoxville any earlier.
Ah well, there will be another OHDope sometime after I move, right?
We got home about 1AM, and went straight to bed!! Hubby was a dear and got up with the little one this morning, so I could sleep in.
Thanks, Nate! We all had a great time!
Thanks, Nate. Enjoyed meeting everyone, especially some of your non-doper colleagues.
I particularly loved all the kids running around.
Looking forward to another one. Hope it won’t be called “floodope.”
JC’s parties have traditionally been an evening-and-late-into-the-night thing so it’s pretty common for most people to not show up until later. Were you the one who brought the amazing cookies? If so… um… recipe? I’ll trade you my firstborn…
They were good, weren’t they? Totally horrible for you, of course.
You can keep your firstborn.
The recipe is from Roselyn Bakery, which was an institution in Indianapolis the entire time I was growing up. They had stores all over, and you couldn’t drive down a street in Indy without passing one of their revolving signs. They had the absolute best tea cookies.
About six years ago, a young and fervent man in the state health department decided to take them on. My mother works in the Indiana Department of Environmental Management, so she saw this up close. The man decided to accuse Roselyn of all sorts of health code violations, which my mother thinks were frivolous. The owner of the bakery was getting very old. He’d started Roselyn in 1943, and I guess he was getting a little tired of it, so instead of working with the health department, he closed down his business. Can’t really blame him, it was 56 years.
Roselyn was immediately missed in Indy!
A couple of years later (I know the story is long but I’ll get to the recipe in a bit) I had a huge craving for their happy face cookies. They are just butter cookies with icing on top, but I searched every bakery in the state, and in Chicago, and couldn’t find anything near them. Then I searched the internet, and found nothing but a lot of other frantic people searching for Roselyn recipes. Then I found a rumor that Roselyn had sold cookbooks in Indy’s Krogers!
I called Kroger. The first few people I talked to hadn’t heard anything about it. Then I talked to the district manager, who gave me a number to talk to the son (J. J. Clark) of the man who started Roselyn. I gave him a call, and 25 dollars later I had in my hot little hand a copy of ALL of their recipes! They are all pretty easy, with ingredients you can find in any grocery store, although they make obscene amounts of baked goods. For instance, the recipe for the Toffee Cookies I brought to Nate’s made six dozen.
Toffee Cookies
2/3 cup Margarine
1 1/4 cup Shortening
3 2/3 cup Sugar
1 3/4 tsp Salt
1 1/2 tsp Baking Soda
4 Eggs
1/3 cup Milk
1 cup Sweetened Coconut
5 cups All-Pupose Flour
1 cup Crushed Toffee
Preheat oven to 325 degrees.
Combine sugar, shortening, margarine, salt and baking soda in a large bowl. Cream well.
Add eggs, milk and coconut, blend well after each addition.
Add flour and blend well. As flour disappears, add toffee and blend well. Do not over mix.
Place by tablespoon onto parchment paper-lined cookie sheet.
Bake at 325 degrees for 15 minutes. Cool on wire racks. Makes about 5 dozen.
(You can probably find the toffee right next to the chocolate chips in the baking aisle)
If you want to give J. J. Clark a call and request a cookbook, the number I have for him is 317 845-0885. Hopefully he is still at that number. If you do call him, tell him that Elizabeth from Arizona sent you and that she is enjoying her cookbook!
I moved to Ohio a couple years ago. I like it here
Thanks!! (yeah Ohio is better than Arizona, ainnit? I grew up in Tucson and couldn’t wait to escape.)
No worries on the size–my chocolate chip cookie recipe makes 8 dozen!
I can’t wait to make them. Mmmm!
Ohio is TONS better! I don’t ever feel guilty about how much water I use on a daily basis, and I haven’t had to make a wide detour around a bloodthirsty tarantula sitting on a sidewalk since I moved here. We lived up on Orange Grove Road up in Tucson, with a lovely view of the Catalinas.
Although I miss Bookmans, and the wonderful Mexican food. And I can’t see any stars! We don’t have roadrunners, or silly lizards that do pushups on hot rocks, or translucent geckos that hide behind doorjambs. But I think lovely green trees make up for it all. My kitties can also go outside without worries about coyotes, too.
Oooh Orange Grove and what? I grew up around Prince/Campbell area…
I miss Bookman’s too. And La Indita on 4th Ave = best Mexican food EVER.
I must disagree. Nico’s Taco Shop is the best.
We were living at Oracle and Orange Grove, in a large apartment complex that had a golf course that no one used. What a waste.
You know, I almost mentioned Nico’s as well. That is my other favorite (I go to the one at Campbell and Ft. Lowell.)
When I go to Tucson to visit my mom, those are the two places that I try to eat at at least 247 times each during my stay.
Get a room, you two.
Thanks to all for coming out! We had a great time and hope you all did as well!
Thanks for having us Nate, we had a great time! Thanks to your wife too. It was also nice making the acquaintence of your new baby. The house is beautiful and the town is lovely.
What? You don’t want a public exhibition?
/I always went to the Ft. Lowell Nico’s too…
