OK, so who trained Obi-Wan?

I saw Attack of the Clones and thought it was half of a good movie (I loved the romance and the dialogue; everything else bored me*).

But I was hoping we’d learn that Yoda really did train Obi-Wan as Kenobi said in The Empire Strikes Back: Luke is face-down in the snow after escaping the ice monster and a glowing, glittering Obi-Wan says, in an echo effect, “Luke! You must go to the Dagobah system. There you will find Yoda, the Jedi master who taught me.”

Twenty years later, we see The Phantom Menace and young Obi-Wan is running around with some guy named Qui-Gon Jinn and calling him “Master.”

So who trained Obi-Wan? Whom did Yoda train? Did George Lucas just forget who trained Obi-Wan or did he belatedly realize that he couldn’t have Yoda at the center of TPM and just changed it all, hoping we wouldn’t remember?

I do remember that Yoda said he’d trained Dooku before their fight, but he could have trained years before training Kenobi.

So what’s the official word, if any?

*I am such a kidder…

I always figured that they all had to take the Yoda Training 101 class in order to pass the trials…

Well, we saw a shot of Yoda training a bunch of very young Jedi-in-training. It may be that Jedi train collectively at first, and are then assigned a specific mentor. In that case, he would’ve trained Obi-Wan along with Qui-Gon Jinn.

Besides, saying “go visit the guy who trained me” is easier than saying “go visit the guy who’s a really good Jedi. He is so! Well, he sort of trained me. I mean, there was this other guy, but…”

Yoda trains all Jedi’s. They become padawans (sp?) and are then taught by masters. So Obi-wan was taught by Yoda then was an apprentice to Qui Gon. I hope I got this right. Anyone want to add anything?

…hit sumbit too soon:

I always figured that they all had to take the Yoda Training 101 class in order to pass the trials…

…but you’re also assigned a specific mentor when you’re a “padawan learner” - so the Mentor-Padawan cycle went Yoda -> Dooku -> Qui-Gon -> Obi-Wan -> Anakin. But everybody had to take Yoda’s class.

I’d imagine that Yoda did a fair amount of training over the course of his, what, 800 year life. By AOTC, he’s probably more of a Jedi Trainer Emiritus.

So isn’t the real question: Why are so many people not able to do the critical thinking to not be confused by this?

Because really, you have to have been pretty late to the “Big Brain Giveaway” in heaven not to be able to think this one out.

Obi-Zero? :D:D

(FYI, I used to have Virginia vanity plates HAN SOLO for my car. One day at work, I parked next to OBI WAN.)

When Qui-Gon Jinn was killed by Darth Maul back in TPM, wasn’t Obi-Wan still his padawan-in-training?

I’m not real clear on precisely what steps are involved in becoming a full-fledged Jedi - surely Obi-Wan didn’t instantly “graduate” because his teacher got offed. I guess I’ve got a couple of questions:[ul][]Where do the Trials fit in to all of this? I’m guessing they’re the final step. Is there anything in the canon giving us detail on what they involve?[]What (if we know) happened to Obi-Wan’s training schedule when Qui-Gon bit it?[/ul]

Dude, there’s a rumor going on, around the Academy, that if your mentor dies, you get all A’s in your Trials, and move on to Jedi Knight that year.

Don’t listen to Snopes. They weren’t there, man.

Of course, Yoda probably teaches Jedi Training 101 because he’s the same height as the students…

Yoda graduated (?) him at the end of TPM. I think killing a Sith lord is probably a pretty good grounds to let someone graduate with honors.

…but don’t forget Obi-Wan has been known to be less than forthcoming with the truth. Remember he told Luke that Vader killed his father. And I don’t by into this whole “in essence what I told you was true” stuff.

It could just be that Obi-Wan lied to Luke about Yoda being the one who trained him, because it was less messy than telling him the embarrassing truth about Qui-Gon getting diced by Maul.

Of course this all assumes that continuity is important which I guess to the fans it is. Though not so to Lucas apparently.

When Yoda complains about how impatient Luke is, Obi-Wan’s voice says “was I any different?”… Who says that only Qui-Gon or only Yoda could’ve trained Obi-Wan? Can’t a Jedi have more that one instructor? Obi-Wan was Qui-Gon’s padawan apprentice, but that doesn’t mean that only Qui-Gon was training him.

Besides, the line from ESB doesn’t have the same ring to it as “Yoda, the last surviving Jedi, oh, and by the way, he was one of many Jedi masters I trained with…”

Three words–“Bo Knows Force”.

"Luke! You will go to the Dagobah system. There you will find Yoda, the Jedi Master who instructed me… before my mentor became Qui-Gonn Jinn, who was once the apprentice to Dooku, who was padawan to Yoda (padawan being Jedi-speak for, well, apprentice). Dooku, incidentally, was also known as Darth Tyrannus, and was in league with Darth Sidious, who is now known as Emperor Palpatine. And since Darth Vader (whom you have yet to meet in person) is more or less the Emperor’s apprentice, you might also be interested in knowing that he is actually your father, Anakin. Now, when I said Vader was my pupil, what I meant to say was that Anakin was, and that he changed his name to Vader. Oh, and Leia is your sister.

"Did I mention that Darth Sidious used to have another apprentice named Darth Maul? He’s dead now; I killed him after he mortally wounded Master Qui-Gonn, who, if you’ll recall, was my teacher, though only after I had a period of instruction from Yoda. Who lives on Dagobah. So, go there.

“If you’ll excuse me, I have to vanish now before Han Solo’s tauntaun rips right through me.”

I think TheeGrumpy’s is the Monty Python straight-faced pedantically literal version!

I think Anankin will be revealed as a bad egg when he pulls a Kobayashi in his trials [ooh! a mixed Star Wars/Star Trek reference!] and Yoda feels compelled to just issue a passing grade…

Funny, I’d wondered the OP question too, without puzzling out all of these possibilities. Mr. Green Fool, not all of us drank the Star Wars Kool-Aid. Although I suppose this definitely qualifies…

That’s also why Luke didn’t have to go through the trials. Redeeming a Sith Lord gets you Magna cum Laude.

Was there anybody around to administer the trials to Luke?

“I’m the last Jedi dude standing - I must be a Master!”
