OK, whadja get?

Underpants.

Some old vinyl (The Who, The Stones, The Animals, and Elvis Costello).

The last book in Lev Grossman’s The Magicians series.

A few very nice cordial glasses, and a lovely Italian scarf (my grandparents are slowly gifting away family heirlooms and various things of theirs so they can see the recipients enjoy them).

(I also got myself a few guitar pedals).

A terrific home cooked prime rib dinner including pecan pie. Best gift ever!

Serious question from a non-musician. How many do you need?

Nothing but then I bought nothing.

I didn’t get nothing, I had to pay $50 and pick up the garbage.

Basically, different pedals are used for different effects; I got one that does distortion, one that does delay (repeated echos), and one that is a phaser (hard to explain, but a common effect that you’ve heard before).

Some people have giant collections of pedals for all sorts of different things, multiple types of distortion, multiple reverbs, other random/cool things. Some people go the digital, all-in-one route.

I had no pedals at all, and for the kinds of things I find myself playing for (rock bands and musical theater orchestras), I need to have at least a little variety in my sound, beyond what comes naturally out of the amp.

 Wrong holiday!

A sweater, Google Play gift card, collection of the parody Parade covers from the Onion, the What If book by Randall Munroe (XKCD), and an electronics kit with a bunch of small tools & soldering iron. The last was sort of a happy accident thing – my wife said it was for “building computers” but few of the tools would be used in a typical snap-together style computer build. But I was recently looking at Raspberry Pi projects and was put off by the electronics part largely because I’d have to buy a bunch of tools. I might go ahead with it now and look up some starter projects.

So far nothing. Well I did get a Nordstrom gift card as my door prize at the office holiday lunch, so that was pretty sweet. My attorney, who’s always good about gifts, has been sick, and told me she forgot that I was taking a few days off, so I’ll have a present from her when I get back to work on Monday. Dad and stepmom are coming over tomorrow, so we’ll do gift exchange then. Spouse didn’t get me anything, as usual. I got him some pajama pants, but only because I was out shopping and saw 100% cotton pajama pants. We don’t really do the present thing anymore. I did get him to buy me a new coffeemaker for my birthday by placing the one I wanted in his Amazon shopping cart.

Nothing very exciting, ultimately. A couple of shirts, some replacement parts for my smoker, a check from my parents, an IOU for a waffle iron (my wife forgot to hit the order button), and a flexible boning knife. Oh… and a copy of Assassins’ Creed Unity, that I think I’m going to return for GTA V.

A new Red Ryder BB gun!

(…yeah, I know but its awfully hard to brag about an AC power drill, even though they are Very useful and I both needed AND asked for one.)

I also got some shirt-jacs and warm weather clothes and a new wallet.

(TWO threads on wallets too; whose been peekin’ in our windows? )

Zip. Xmas isn’t big in Taiwan. We did it for the kids, thought and they really enjoyed it.

Toilet paper, and a half box of tissues. My kids gave me those, not sure what the ex was thinking when she let them give it to me. I think I would have rather had a rock.

A box of assorted local honeys and a nice cheque from my Dad. A sonic screwdriver that can be configured 80 different ways and an ice cream maker attachment for my KA stand mixer from my Mom. My best friend gave me a copy of Tintin au Congo and a bottle of wine. My boyfriend got me a Walking Dead purse. I was spoiled rotten.

Several days of horse laughing with my daughter and nephew. I love Xmas.

A hundred dollars, what I get every year.*

*Not complaining, I love it each time. It’s money!

A book of New York Times Sunday crossword puzzles. It will go in my briefcase, and help me to pass the time waiting in airports, in court, in hotels, and so on.

I also got a nice bottle of port, some excellent pipe tobacco (having a pipe of it as I type this), and plenty of candy and nuts and whatnot.

Airfare, hotel and tickets from my wife so my two sons and I can attend the Barrett Jackson Auto Auction in Scottsdale AZ. Yes, I’m a car guy and my sons are starting to be ones also.

Something tells me though that this may turn out to be way more expensive for me than it was for my wife. Watch for my next thread… “how to transport a classic car from Arizona to Indiana… need answer fast.”

I win!

A basket!

No, I don’t quite mean one of those things you use to hold stuff. These baskets are given as corporate gifts, or in lotteries (generally linked to the National Lotery results of either December 22 or January 5). We won one from the butcher’s, and while the contents are good, what’s even better is that we all started the celebration in a very good mood. A chunk of serrano (which I have just brought back from having it sliced and vacuum-packaged at the same butcher’s), three boxes of nougat (fruitcake, Jijona and Alicante), a large Nestlé Red Box, a tin of cookies, four different bottles of wine (red, white, rose and cava), cheese, paté and tuna in brine.

Me personally,
a pair of lightweight gloves, from my brother and his gf, cool! Pink :frowning: I’m’a gonna kill me a brudda.
A pair of “snow” gloves, from the same. Same pink. Did I say I’m gonna kill my brother?
A new kindle, because I really only want a tablet-like device to read and for that it’s better to have a dedicated reader than a tablet.
Two pairs of thick knee high socks, from the other brother and his wife. These are not pink, thankfully.

From work, a bottle of “Christmas brandy” (21% by volume). I don’t drink, but I do eat coq au vin, or rather, chicken au brandy…

Enginerd, you got scales?

Congratulations!
