Cajun Man - Moderator closed that thread, thankfully, but I still am wondering what was so offensive about Opal’s thread.

Yes, I am pulling at things here that may make little sense to others however…this is really bugging me.
Opal’s post has been not disgusting, it wasn’t to incrimate, descrimiate, belittle, be gross. She asked a fun question to her bowel habits with regards to her surgery.
Good word, people have discussed more intimate things that are very sensitive and very graphic with little retribution (sp.)
In either case, I appreciate the closing of the other thread but I am unclear about people really understanding where I am coming from…

Well, ever since the antics of a couple posters (ahem) caused a ruckus in the TMI thread, they’ve kinda asked us to try to keep things from being too disgusting…
I didn’t close the thread because it was offensive, techchic. I closed it because I felt it was in bad taste. As long as I’m a moderator here, I’ll close any thread that I feel is in bad taste . . . no matter who starts it.

Sorry to drag this out further, but the reason I asked is that the word “offensive” is very often used to mean “in bad taste.” My dictionary, for instance, gives definitions such as “repugnant, such as to the moral sense or good taste,” with synonyms including “displeasing,” “distasteful,” and “digusting.” You seem to have a clear distinction in your mind between the two terms, and I just wanted to clarify what that distinction is.

And as far as Opal not posting certain kinds of crap on her own board, what on earth does that have to do with anything? If you want to chide her for her thread on this board, then do so in terms of the rules and standards for this board, not in terms of what you happen to know of her conduct elsewhere on the Internet. You make it sound like she’s held up to special scrutiny here.

I think possibly the accumulated weight of the various threads over time with updates by Opalcat on the whirlwind of Opalcat’s life including her various dental problems, teetering on the edge of insolvency finances, living in a house with of cat urine and feces everywhere, weight problem, gastric surgery, incipient bowel movements etc. etc. and the need to keep everyone updated on these issues, simply reached a critical mass of way too much TMI for Dex at some point and he posted a parody thread.
As a member of SDMB Opal is certainly entitled to post as much personal info on her life and times as she desires, but there is a point at which this simply gets to be a bit much for some people, and I would guess that Opal’s thread about taking bets on “Join the betting pool! When will my bowels function again?” pegged the attention monger needle far enough into the red for the umpteenth time, that Dex simply got a bit tired of this constant steam of TMI, and fired off a parody thread response without really thinking it through insofar as a response like this would look like coming from an admin instead of a mere mortal. - But I’m just guessing.

As the thread was closed before I got to respond to Opal’s response to my response to her OP … (Um, hold on, I got lost for a second there …)
I’d like to take this opportunity to say that I did understand she was being light-hearted about her medical concerns; I was not really offended, just trying to reply in the spirit of the thread; and I sincerely apologize if my post was a factor (unlikely as that may be) in CajunMan’s decision.

Here it is, since you have missed it: I just underwent extremely major surgery that totally rearranged my insides. My body no longer digests food in the same way, order, etc as it used to. I’m quite nervous about it all. As a way to alleviate some of my nerves, I decided to make a humorous post about the “will it work or won’t it” questions as to whether my body IS STILL GOING TO FUNCTION. I just want this understood. I know it doesn’t change anything, and I’m not suggesting that it should. I’d just rather have you know WHY I posted a thread like that, rather than just thinking “oh gee, Opal wants to post about taking a dump”… which apparently was all your non-observant self was capable of grasping without help.
Astro: who cares what you think? No one asked you, the questions was addressed to Cajun Man. Having you speculate on the answer is quite irrelevant. Unless you just happen to enjoy answering questions posed to other people… which just makes you sort of annoying.
Both threads are closed, so it looks like both people were treated equally. What is the issue?
astro, your candor is refreshing. I agree. The reality is, some os us Dopers probably generate less good will towards ourselves than others. Some of us are more likely targets for parody threads thanks to our posting style or contents or frequency. Alas, such is life on a message board. The safety net is that when mods feel these parodies go over the line, the mods will close it, as they have in this case.
