:dubious: Many people are of the opinion that that’s not setting the bar very high.
How is banning immigration from an arbitrary list of Muslim countries worse than invading and killing them by the tens of thousands? If Iraq is among “good things but going too far” it seems you could make a similar argument for the Muslim ban. They’re both, ostensibly, about protecting America from terrorists.
Only caring about things that directly affect you is generally not a well respected moral stance. That’s how stereotypical Republicans act. The OP appeared to be calling for all NFL players to protest the ban, not only the few Muslim players - are any of them even affected? Their families overseas, perhaps? I don’t follow the NFL.
America does protest worthy actions all the time, so I’m wondering how one chooses which ones other people should put their careers on the line for. The best argument I can think up for this being different is the Muslim ban is more unprecedented, whereas some others are more set in stone (America is always at war), and it could snowball and lead to worse outcomes in the future if it becomes culturally accepted. But the same could be said of others too. Like when the UN inspectors couldn’t find WMD, and Bush went in anyway. Or when the first evidence of torture and black sites popped up.
Another answer could be, “yes, athletes should have protested then too.”
Regardless, it’s probable Trump and the GOP will enact many more protest worthy actions in the next four years.
You caught me. I actually work for the FSB. I’ve just been pretending to be a leftist here for the last ten years. MAGA, comrade.
If I understand correctly, the ban covered 7 countries. Granted, they are majority Muslim countries, but are there really only 7 countries with Muslim majorities? Or could it be that those countries happen to be the biggest risk of exported terrorism?
If it was a ban on Muslims in general I’d think the list of countries would be much higher.
Checking out this list on Wiki and clicking the little arrow on Muslim percentage of population then counting the number of countries/territories with 50% or higher Muslim population, I count 55.
As the “so-called judge” told Trump’s flacks, the risk from those seven countries is nil when you base risk on attacks carried out by citizens of those seven countries. Trump used two criteria and two criteria only to put a country on his list: 1-Muslim country, 2-in which Trump has no business interest. Actual threat to the United States was not included in the so-called thinking involved in compiling the list.
At least 8 times longer.
It appears the only players to take Monty’s advice was the Atlanta defense, and they waited until the fourth quarter.

You know, sometimes, when everyone is against something, a valuable question is “why?”. As in, “Why would everyone in the world hate it if we elected an unqualified, brash, dishonest narcissist to the highest office in a country with a nuclear arsenal that can hit anywhere on the planet?” Jeez I wonder why. My friends here in Germany ask me what the fuck is wrong with my home country. I have no good response. What the fuck is wrong with you, anyways?
All my Georgia relatives are in shock.
Of course the Oscars won’t be cancelled. I’m sure there will be a combination of scathing, funny Trump mockery and positive references to American & International values. (The latter is now suspect–see the proposed Budweiser Boycott in response to a corny, Capra-esque Superbowl commercial featuring a immigrant.) The Donald will be crushed–those stars don’t like him. They never did.
I’m not much of a football fan but tuned in since it was coming from my city this year. The plan was to surf online, do some stuff around the house… I ended up watching the game–which featured not a bit of whininess.
Get out of your foul smelling bubble & pay attention to America.
It seemed like the Patriots sat out the first half and the Falcons sat out the second.
A relatively small minority of NFL players make $7 million a year. Most don’t earn that much in their entire careers.
You just broke Poe’s Law. Ya funny little muppet.
A fine performance, maestro !
However, on a more personal note, your chosen name ineluctably reminds me of the British, yet created as so many puppet shows and animations were, by Czechs, TV series, The Pinky and Perky Show.
Contrary to rumour, Pinky had nothing to do with the morose hero, once portrayed by Richard Attenborough, of Graham Greene’s noir masterpiece of corrupt gloom, Brighton Rock.
Brighton, beneath London Town, is a seaside resort, and in the first half of the 20th century was filled with repulsive razor gangs dahn at the racecourses. Not dissimilar to Atlantic City in tone. Rock is a hard, revolting sweetmeat favoured at seaside resorts. The Pinkie of this novel has the moral character and drive of some famous American associated with Atlantic City and stiffing his partners.
I only wish I could remember his name.
