45F this AM and sunny. Not much on the agenda other than an exercise session. The last two days was quite busy enough, thanks. I think a bagel with salmon cream cheese, bacon and tomato for breakfast. Perhaps some scrambled on the side.
Afternoon, mumpers! It’s currently 18c/64f with no predicted change, and partly cloudy. Weather app says “ It’s partly fucking cloudy? What’s the other fucking part? Shame!” Of course, partly cloudy also means partly sunny, so that’s not so bad.
I’m sorry, I must have missed this bit yesterday - I hope your sister gets some relief for the pain, nobody should be going through all of that.
Hurrah! Then the RDOS life can really start.
Whatever the outcome, you need the peace of knowing that you did your very best for Bailey and didn’t give up on her
I have no idea - originally the plan was to keep her with us until she could be rehomed, but we can’t do that until she’s a bit more sociable. That hasn’t happened, so she might just stay with us forever unless we can move her in with a fosterer who’s got plenty of time and no other cats. She doesn’t get on with the girls at all, she growls at Cherry for coming too close, and Blossom pretty much doesn’t set a little paw in that room because she gets a telling off!
That is good news, having new specs is a much better result than her finding something nasty going on.

Safe travels, have fun, and enjoy getting all edumacated!
My nice quiet day in my old office has not gone quite as planned I popped into the current office to pick up my laptop, notebook and collect my milk from the fridge. One of my minions asked for a quick chat which turned into nearly an hour as she had a lot to say and some crying to do. The upshot of that is me having some serious thinking to do on her behalf!
I went over to the old office, got my laptop set up and logged myself in, answered some emails and got a few little skip fires sorted out. Then one of the ladies from the Ops Team came in to say hello and we had a natter, did a bit of work, then an academic came in and we had a chat (I recognise her, but can’t remember her name!), the postie came and went, a delivery guy came and went, someone came in to collect an exam script for marking and returned it later, then my old minion from the Music Dept came over for a very long natter. Consequently, it’s now 2pm and not a lot of work has been done….but it’s been fun!
yes! very easy. surreal results.
i’ve worn glasses/contacts since 3rd grade, probably needed them before then. i’m now glasses free.
they do “twilight sedation” the operation is fast, if you don’t twilight, you will see very vivid colours and there will be a weird light cube. there will be a bit of pressure. irrigation feels wonderful.
be attentive to eye drops and call if anything is out of the ordinary.
i went down quite the you tube rabbit hole before my surgery. there are many options of lenses. aside from myopia, i have retina issues as well and that informed what sort of lenses. the videos helped me with what to discuss with my doctor.
i’m still a bit amazed this is how i’ll be seeing for many years. i only need glasses for very fine print and very fine hand work. the sdmb has cataract discussions, the latest one: In YOUR opinion, when’s the best time to get cataract surgery? - In My Humble Opinion - Straight Dope Message Board
good luck!
Good morning.
It’s 61°F, dark, and cloudy right now, and sunrise will occur in about 30 minutes. It’ll be cloudy early in the day, with peeks of sunshine, partly cloudy skies for the afternoon, and an expected high of 83°F.

Cookie, I’m glad there is nothing wrong with the eye.
Happy Birthday to FCM’s daughter!
I have an appointment at 11:00 to get my hair cut and toned, and I may do some running around after.
My husband has been complaining for eons about the wifi upstairs (I never had issues), so yesterday I ordered a stupidly expensive combo modem/router. The current modem is outdated anyway, but I wasn’t planning on spending that much money. Add to that the costs of the new speakers for his computer, and it’s been an expensive electronics month. Plus, I had to order a new keyboard for myself. The number 8 key has been wonky for a while, and now the letter “P” has come loose, and I can’t get it back on. Unfortunately, the keyboard doesn’t arrive until tomorrow.
Well, I should get to gettin’. You all take care of yourselves.
Happy birthday FCDaughter!
Up, caffeinating, breakfasted and fixing to do KP. Today’s agenda involves back to Xfinity, this time with the sim card and finishing up the sorting.
Stay safe and healthy y’all!
I just saw a story on the local news that Publishers Clearing House went bankrupt.
The video shown on the news is in the linked article that was posted on the 2nd. The text tracks the video pretty closely, but contains additional information.
Mornin’ all - 'Tis ~1030 as I start driveling. Slept lots last night and got a late start today. Yaay! Now fully caffinated. Shevel & feed is next.
Bright & sunny out there. NWS sez 85/29 on the way to 90/32. Puffies now, rainshowers later. about like yesterday. Yesterday was nice until about 4pm then it got rainy and stayed that way to about 7. Which was ideal for me; that just crushes the crowds at our eateries, meaning I can enjoy my meal in relative peace then have a nice outdoor sit afterwards.
RDOS today.
Poor {{{{shoe}}}}.
{{hugs}} also for @Misnomer and Bailey.
I’ve read the rest but have no great comments.
Cheers!
I found the Pit post.

Yeah, it sounds like she’d prefer to be queen of her domain without minions, except for the one who feeds her.
First load is in the dryer, second is washing, 3 more to go. And amazingly, I cleaned the carpet in about 15 minutes… That is, after we moved all the furniture and I gave it a thorough rollsuck. The water wasn’t quite as cruddy as when I did the dining room, but I cleaned the living room shortly after MIL died last December, so it was a bit cleaner to start with. Well, except for all the pistachio shells under FCD’s recliner.
He’s off to the marina to install a few things in the fresh water system. I’m taking a breather until the sheets come out of the dryer.
The application process for one particular rescue organization (not sure which one - he’s throwing applications all over the place) strikes me as borderline insane. I understand they want to be sure they place the dogs in the right situation. But they want to know all of our pets (by my count, we’ve had 9 cats and 7 dogs in the last 42 years) all of their vets, all of the prescriptions, all meds we bought on line and from whom. I can’t remember where we took the dogs in Florida and I’d have to drive to Fredericksburg to see the vet we used when we lived there, assuming they haven’t moved their office - can’t recall their name.
Meds? It is to laugh! I know they got flea and heartworm treatment monthly and I got some of that on line, but it’s been so long, I don’t remember where and I doubt my VISA statements are available easily beyond a year ago. Oh, and they want a home visit. And references. Well, they can’t get a note from my second grade teacher because I’m pretty sure she’s dead by now.
It is a contrast to when I got Ziva. They wanted my name, address, and a check. Done. Maybe they trusted her judgement - she curled up on my lap and purred at window-rattling volume. Anyway, I’m inclined to go elsewhere, but it’s his search. Oh, and Irish wolfhounds pretty much never show up in rescue, and when they do, they’re snapped up in a flash.
Just for giggles (no,not leaning that way) I looked up what breeders get for puppies. Purebred go from $1500-$6000 or more!! No. Just no. And the ones that kill me are “designer dogs” - back in my day, they called them mutts - yanno - mom was one breed and dad was another. Mutts. I just don’t get it. Were I inclined, I’d go to one of the local shelters or rescue groups and see which critter approached me with joy in its heart. That would be my dog. If I wanted a dog.
OK, enough of this. Time to empty the dishwasher.
{ blinks }
Oh, thanks for all the nice feelings, y’all. I gotta get through Long Night tonight, and nobody at work knows what I’ve been going through (cuz I haven’t told). Y’all have been a rock for me.
I did eat yesterday (turkey and instant mashed potatoes … beige food … no vegetables were harmed! but it stayed down, and I didn’t cry, at work) but I’ll hafta get something down today, too.
And a late good morning to all. Got up around 6:30am and decided to make my two trips early, one before the school day started and one after school was underway. Made a run to the Tennessee border and picked up some more Powerball tickets, not that I expect to win anything but if you don’t try, you’ll never know. Even lost money on the one winning ticket I had, got $4 from it but then bought a Diet Pepsi and a Hostess Cupcake and that cost me $5.49. Then back down to my home territory and did the Firday Kroger shopping. So home and with time to spare, the dishwasher is in operation and nothing much on the agenda until soccer in the afternoon. Gym is a definite maybe/maybe not. Supposed to be nice today but a 70% chance of rain tomorrow, so soccer may be in jeopardy for Saturday.
And now to revisit all the posted messages since my last missive…
{{{shoe}}}, just because.
swampy, happy edumacation time!
Sticky Buns, always nice to read of your travels, reminds me of places I know but haven’t seen in a long time.
FCM, had to think about that for a minute myself; Trenton, right? And I concur, buying a ‘pure-bred’ from a reputable dealer is highly expensive and there are a lot of good dogs who would provide you both with attention and love if given the chance.
Coppertone, all appropriate appendages crossed for your interview.
VanGo, good to feel responsible, but don’t let it spoil your day off. You’ve earned this.
FCM, 40 years…does it seem to you that the years are moving too damn fast these days? Seems like 2025 just got started and we’re 2/3 through it…
boo fae, your minion story is one reason I never wanted to be a supervisor/boss.
rocky, I am happy that your surgery was so successful and wish the best to Cupcakes on hers.
Taters, my ‘space right’ arrow refuses to work and I have a spare "el cheapo’ keyboard in reserve, but never seem to get around to changing it.
Flyboy, can’t remember getting anything from them recently, given the on-line revolution I am surprised they lasted this long, not that much being published anymore (more’s the pity, IMHO).
And that’s the bottom of the page. Take care and more later.
Got it. It doesn’t open for 2 weeks so only 3 more weeks of begging.
Mornin! Or nigh on afternoon, really. Busy morning and all. S’posed to get good ‘n gusty today, but sunny, so that’s okay.
True to her indecisive nature, Ms. Mindfield now can’t decide between stuffed peppers, eggplant parmigiana, or some kind of baked pasta with meat sauce for the weekend. I mean, I’m okay with any of them, and can make any of them, so I might just have to pick up everything and decide on the fly. (There’s a lot of ingredient crossover between the dishes, so that’s not difficult, and I can always make more than one of them as needs/desires demand. I just don’t have a lot of time for big productions during the week, so whatever I do has to be prepared over the weekend.)
Steak is also on the menu as we have a couple we have to use up, but that’s not as big a production, so easy to do.
We’re also working out to do about the wasp problem outside the front of the house. Foam wasp spray, burning rosemary, vinegar, calling a professional, all discussed as possibilities. Probably gonna go with the foam spray and apply it at night when the buggers are in their hive and least active. There are multiple entrances though so I’ll have to plug them all with the foam. And then once applied, GTFO and not go outside ‘til at least late morning.
Excellent! Glad they found the source of the issue. As I said, I’ve only had those twice, so I can’t imagine having them frequently recurring. That would drive me nuts and probably freak me out even more.
I don’t know who started the whole raisins in potato salad thing, but they’ve never darkened my door, nor will I allow it. It’s just weird.
Yeah, I’d get stuff while you can. I couldn’t stand the idea of having to pay ridiculous tariffs on practically everything even if I could afford it. The idea of giving the government more money for absolutely no good or sensible reason, especially that government, is completely anathema to me. It’s going to take a few months for pre-tariff prices to return (if they actually do, greedflation being what it is) but I’ll be glad if/when it happens. It’s depressing how little my paycheque is actually worth these days. Six years ago, the salary I make would’ve had us living decently, if not completely comfortably. Right now, we’re just scraping by.
I have to pick mine from the supermarket plant, but I’m okay with that. Gonna stick with green peppers, as I don’t want the sweetness of yellow or red in this particular dish.
Again, I’ve never made them before, but the filling is much like my pasta sauce, just meatier and with rice, so I’m sure it’ll turn out well enough. I haven’t had stuffed peppers in years, last time was at a tiny little Italian joint not far from where I worked many years ago, and they were amazing. I only hope I can replicate something as well.
I love cabbage rolls, but I can’t even remotely imagine it with raisins. I like sweet with savoury stuff in certain contexts (yes, I’m a pro-pineapple on pizza guy) but I can’t see this being one of them. I don’t find cabbage rolls rich enough to need offsetting with some sweetness.
I’m okay with currants, they’re kinda-sorta similar. Dates or figs would be fine – I think I’d prefer the texture of figs more if I were to do something like this.

A lot of the folks on my program work a schedule where they have every other Friday off, and today is one of those Fridays: everyone I’d need to either manage or talk with (to fix something) is out of the office. My boss is also technically off today, but there’s a customer meeting every Friday morning – all morning – so she always winds up working at least 1/2 day; she’ll probably log off sometime in the next hour or two. All of which is to say that I’m glad the afternoon will likely be very quiet, because I am so not in the mood to work today.
I’m a little grumpy with a guy from my yard company. I want to have some landscaping work done, and on Tuesday their estimator texted me and said he’d stop by sometime this morning: it’s almost noon, and I haven’t seen/heard from him. I sent him a text at around 10:30 and asked if he’d still be coming by…
I just called, and left a voicemail – after getting a generic “the person you’re trying to reach isn’t available” message, which never inspires confidence. If I don’t hear from him by ~1pm, I’ll contact the company.
I’m looking forward to assembling my Lego arcade machine this weekend, and yesterday I discovered my next set: a mineral collection. It isn’t available until October 1, but it comes with the stand and everything. There are two window ledges in my workspace at the office: I have Lego flowers on one of them, but I think this one will look good on the ledge that’s right behind my desk. I figure I’ll put it near the Pixar logo. I won’t assemble this one at work during my lunch breaks, though; it doesn’t seem like it’ll be nearly as fragile/hard to move as the flowers.
Time for lunch! Last night I had dinner delivered from a nearby deli: a turkey/cheddar/bacon wrap, plus a half order of latkes. Of course I ate the latkes first, so I’m about to have the other half of the wrap. And I’m out of bananas (the horror!), so I’ll have to eat some potato chips instead. Woe is me.
Oh, I’m glad you can/did go!
(The confusion was likely as much on my end as yours!)
I was scrolling thru baby pics and toddler pics - it’s not possible that my baby girl has kids of her own. Where did those years go?
Fourth load in the washer, dishwasher is emptied, house is closed and the a/c is on. Dammit. We’re meeting Daughter and her crew at Olive Garden for supper tonight. SIL said he talked to us about it at my mom’s on Sunday - I surely don’t recall. But whatevs.
Got my delivery from Da Jungle, and the box of dishwasher pods looks like it was used for batting practice. It was wrapped in a plastic bag and I’m going to assume all 140 pods are in there - not gonna count. But I gave the seller a bad review. Seriously - don’t send out boogered up packaging. And yeah, it came that way from them - that was apparent from the way everything was wrapped/packaged.
OK, more chill time till the jeans are dry.
So today I was loading Bottom Red on the 200. And remember when I felt impending doom yesterday? The Richmond Va. loads either were in an accident, or tied up and one didn’t make it. When I was walking out there was a fire engine and an ambulance at the guard shack, and EMS had one of the guards on a stretcher, and were talking to him, trying to access his coherency. Then I was passing the next block up, there was a wrecked Animal Control vehicle, 2 RPD cars, a lawn care truck, and an unwrecked Animal Control truck in the lot. And judging by the debris, whatever happened, happened in the lot, and not on the road. I stooped at Teeter to get a slab or rainbow trout, and strated laundry.
So say we all!
Let’s not get too crazy, though.
HAPPY BIRTHDAY FCDaughter!!!
< crosses fingers >
Sounds like the time I dropped acid in a dorm room.
Nothing worse when your P come flying out.
You got the job? If so, congrats! Hope it works out for ya.
Yes. It was open interviews. A man came in right before me, she hired him in 3 minutes.
I told her I had day availability and was hired.
I wouldn’t have taken the school job anyway. I would’ve had to walk a block at 5 a.m. to the bus. Not safe.

This always puzzles me. “Disheveled” is “dis-heveled”, not “di-sheveled”.
Trenton. Y’all need to go listen to Wakko Warner a time or two.

I just saw a story on the local news that Publishers Clearing House went bankrupt.
Too many people winning their sweepstakes?

I haven’t had stuffed peppers in years
We used to buy Stouffers frozen peppers fairly frequently, but they’vs almost doubled in price in the last few years. Haven’t tried making them from scratch yet.

This always puzzles me. “Disheveled” is “dis-heveled”, not “di-sheveled”.
This is the MMP - what makes you think there’s logic and rule-following??
Well, I’ve got the grandspawn overnight tonight. I was going to have them in the morning anyway for a few hours, so they’ll come home with us after Olive Garden and with luck, their parents will claim them around lunchtime. So much for evening chillage…
