Someone in the Lost Angeles FB group posted a vintage photo of a zanja on Figueroa Street by the Stimson Mansion. (I do not know the Stimson Mansion.)
I found a video: Visiting with Huell Howser: Zanja Madre. I don’t have time to watch it right now, but it looks interesting. (I always liked Visiting with Huell Howser when it was on.)
Chilly morning at the park. It was 65 and I put on a light jacket, thinking I probably wouldn’t need it. I usually wear a light jacket on the cooler mornings and by the time we are leaving it’s too warm.
I needed a heavier jacket today as it was quite breezy.
The dogs are enjoying the cooler weather.
So is my son as the warehouse is more comfortable.
I had a little history lesson this evening. You never know where you are going to find interesting bits of information.
The symbol for a Bluetooth is actually the combined Viking Runes for H and B, named after Viking King Harald the Bluetooth of Denmark.
So named because he had a dead tooth that turned blue, or grey.
Of course, I may be late to the game on this one. It may be common knowledge that I missed out on.
One thing to be grateful for, I think, FCM, is that you got your in-laws up here in time. At least you are having to deal with you MIL being in FL.
I think the waiting? is hard. You aren’t wishing death on anybody, but you kind of want it to be over. Only you don’t want it to be over, because nobody wishes for that kind of over, but you know it’s coming and you dread it, but you want it to be done. You’re hanging in limbo with conflicting emotions and the whole situation just sucks.
And you just don’t know.
I have a friend; he had just filed for divorce when he found out his husband was dying. He cancelled the divorce so he could take care of his husband, nobody else would, and to avoid the bad optics of divorcing a dying spouse. Nobody thought his husband would make it until Thanksgiving… of last year. He calls me about once a week, just to vent his frustration at being a caregiver. He has no life, and gets constant criticism from the in-laws.
I feel for you.
Freedom is good SenSei
and hospital food does mostly suck.
Other than the hospital where my son was born. I don’t know if it was just the maternity ward, or the whole hospital, but that was some of the best food I ever had. Restaurant quality, real food.
My last hospital stay, the nurses were constantly on my ass for not eating enough. The food was not edible. If I dropped a chicken tender on the floor, it would have bounced.
Well, I watched it. Interesting, but I was hoping for more. Apparently the original air date was September 11th, 2006. The episode had an earlier, less-polished look to it. Still, it’s nice that there’s something on the early water system, and it makes me want to go to Olvera Street.
Morning, mumpers! It’s currently 13c/55f with a predicted high of 19c/67f, and mostly sunny. Weather app says “This might very well be the perfect fucking day to shit in the yard. If you’re a fucking dog.” Well, I am not so I won’t. It’s pleasant out there, which is good because I had to trek to campus this morning.
That is a very tasteful container, and the paw print is a nice touch. I’m sure Q’itih would be pleased with that.
Did he speak to the hospice people about it? It does sound like she’s coming to the end, I expect you’ll both be relieved when it happens, in your own ways.
I know, I need the council to come up with some new ludicrous idea so we can have some fun again!
Today promises to be busy as I’ve got two training sessions today, and I’ve got a bunch of exam stuff to catch up on as well. Not much else planned, until tonight when I should be out with a couple of friends. I’m waiting for one of them to email me with the plan (ie, the decision about which pub to go to) assuming he’s well enough to come out. Other than that, just another boring day in paradise.
Good Mornin’ Y’all! Up and caffeinatin’. YAWN ‘Tis 72 Amurrkin out and clear with a predicted high of 91 and N.O.S. We shall procure provisions today and get fried chikin N.O.L.s for the main need to feed of the day. I took a big whole chikin outta da freezer last night to begin thawin’, so’s I can turn it into chikin sallit. I have been requested to bring chikin sallit sammiches on Hawai’ian rolls for the reception after church on Sunday. It’s a reception for the Bishop so I reckon I’ll use a fancy platter. Outside of procurin’ provisions, 'twill be the usual RDOS inactivities.
Sensei yay on gettin’ sprung!
BooFae happy pub night!
Now I need more caffeine and to feed rumbly tummy. Then, alas and bother, I suppose I must purtify and don attire acceptable for bein’ amongst the great unwashed. Oh woe!
Yep, that’s it. When she finally dies, it will be hard on FCD and Daughter, and me a little bit, but I’m kinda more practical (cold hearted?) than they are. Her life right now, as much as we try, is pretty awful for her. Thank goodness for audio books - at least that’s some diversion. But really, she’s not happy.
The talking in her sleep has ramped up - she was having conversations with someone this morning - enough that I could hear it in my room. Dunno if it means anything, but any sudden change makes my spidey senses tingle. The sleep-talking and the falls are two biggies all of a sudden.
Woke to 53° and our high is to be in the mid-70s. I’m hoping to clean up my veggie patch today - it’s pretty much played out. I’ll just haul everything into our woods to rot away. Then, I guess, I’ll have to buy veggies again. Dammit.
Yeah, this! My recent experience was much shorter than yours, but still it was great to go home.
I baked a chickie tit yesterday because I want another chickie/grape/apple salad. So that will get done after I destroy my veggie patch.
FCD just left for the boatyard - he checks in every day to see their progress. I hope we can move it back to our marina soon. I’m kinda dreading the bill. We pulled some money out of a CD, but that was when we were still DIY. I hope we pulled out enough. But we’ll see.
I’ve decided that we’ll have Daughter and her spawn over for supper tomorrow. I’ll get a fried chicken dinner from the deli. I want them to get as much time as they can with MIL - especially Roxy - she may still have some memories of her great-grandma going forth. Tobias, less so.
Hospice aide will come this morning to help MIL shower. And that pretty much summarizes today.
Morning all. Up early and decided to do a load of laundry before I have my 8:30am ear doctor appointment. So that is going. Have pilled myself and broken fast. No soccer today so will play catch-up on a few things around the house. 58F right now, due to make it to 85F so toasty but not unpleasant.
Sensei, glad you have been released and…
But not falling…
Sari, I didn’t know that about Bluetooth (but then I know almost nothing about Bluetooth), so thanks for the history.
Imma go with “Holy cow” to the immense water bill.
I’m up and atom. Driving up the lake for a meeting with the museum. I made a template of the boat and want to lay it out on the floor in the space to make sure my measurements were right. And then talk over what exactly we’re going to build.
Well, I’m an idiot. Started a load of shirts and gym stuff and a couple minutes later my car alarm went off. Used my key fob to turn it off and figured I might have a short or something. Wasn’t until I was loading the dryer that I found my second set or keys deep a gym short pocket. Key fob obviously doesn’t work so I will get a new battery and see if that helps, or may just have to replace it. So Dumbth.
Hubs is at the VA, doing his intro visit and getting his prescriptions moved over. We both got refills before we left AZ so we could be sure we had time to get things transferred without rushing and stressing.
Walgreens impressed me, they didn’t want a list of what I was taking, they just wanted my name, birthday and the pharmacy number. They also took my number, but our 928 area code causes problems. Folks assume that is the prefix instead.
I called a couple of days later and was told they were ready and when I went to pick them up, they had also managed to get my insurance info and had properly not charged me a co-pay.
Bella is quieter today, hopefully she is coming off heat for a while. It would be great if we can get her fixed before she cycles back in again.
I harvested the last 2 cukes and a metric buttload of 'maters, mostly grape 'maters. I also got my total bell pepper harvest:
I put in 4 or 5 plants. Dunno what I did wrong. That’s a quarter, in case you don’t recognize it. And there are 2 more, very small cantaloupes - we’ll see if they get to harvest size. I’m watering the garden right now.
FCD is working in his office. MIL is talking in her sleep again. She said last night she was talking to her husband (dead a year anna half) and her middle son (dead at least a year.) When I came in from the yard, she was saying something to FCD about peanuts, not sure what that was about. Her mind seems to be going big time.
Anyway, I need to rinse the 'maters and get them in the fridge. I’m going to make a cuke salad and the chickie salad, tho not right now. I want to sit a bit. The aide just called - with luck, she’ll get here before lunch.
My favorite first grader:
With her little brother:
I got called in 45 minutes early, so they could start early. Which is nice. I stopped at Aldi for tortellini for tonight’s tortellini and meatballs.
Spot: < grabs arm, bites and bunny kicks it >
Me: “Ow! Don’t do that.”
Spot: “I am not doing what you tell me, primate!”
Me: “I order you to bite and bunny kick my arm!”
Spot: < slaps down Reverse Card > “HA! Now I get to do it anyways! And UNO, bitch!”
Next meeting tell 'em “stop being sensible, the Yanks need their bin reports!”
Well, I am hearing-aided now. The ENT people did a good job explaining things, had me try them on and take them off, did a couple tests and after paying (insurance helped about 40%), turned me loose on the world.
Well. Most noticeable are the sounds I am used to having changed; for example, my car turn signal is much…clackier…now, plastic bags and paper sound different when crumpled and/or folded, and the clock in my office room is now defunct as it apparently has been ticking it’s heart away all this time and I haven’t been hearing it. The aids are comfortable and I hardly notice them, so hopefully I will adjust to this new routine and sound (even the keyboard sounds…clickier) fairly quickly. Haven’t had enough conversations to tell how it helps there, but soccer tomorrow with the kids will hopefully tell the tale.
And the car key fob that went through the wash has returned to life once it dried out sufficiency, so no added expense there. A fairly good morning I would say.
VanGo, hope the meeting is productive (and remunerative) for you.
JtC, steal it all you want, now and then my three brain cells (I call them Larry, Curly and Moe) rub together and I come up with something. And I also use Wal-Greens for my prescriptions and they haven’t disappointed yet.
FCM, lovely pictures.
Now, does Wal-mart sell non-clickey-clackey keyboards…must investigate…
metal mouse I’ve got one of these for my shop computer that I rather like. I’d prefer if it had bigger up and down arrows.
The trip up the lake was good, a bit sketchy a few times with rain and wind, but my template fit perfectly. On to the next steps. Actually building this thing and figuring out how to make it in small parts that can fit through their door.
Back from the vet. Bella got some pretty pricey blood work and now we are just waiting on the results.
The vet seemed to know his stuff and when I told him what was going on, he said he’d had another patient with ORS a while back. When he heard how much the test was, he was shocked and said it wasn’t nearly that much last time. So I asked him when the last time was. Hormone testing was indeed much less expensive 15 years ago, LOL!!!
Bella didn’t poop in the carrier this time, but she growled at the vet tech when she got her temperature taken. She’s a squirmy lil thing.
Remembering to factor the size of the door into a build is the mark of a true professional.
One of Hubs’ friends built his box Harley (A frame, engine and a big box of parts sold by someone who thought they knew what they were doing. Common enough in the Harley world) in his living room. (Well, yes, he was single, why do you ask?)
Getting the completed bike out of the living room involved beer and a chainsaw. I later heard he lost his deposit.
Howdy Y’all! We procured provisions, et fried chikin, and achieved nappage and day drinkin’. That’s quite the full day for a couple of RDOS! Next up will be Netflix, chill, and popcorn. We be livin’ it up!
JtC beer and chainsaws sounds like a fun party to me!
shoe those Hawai’ian roll thingys are great for both chikin sallit and pimento cheese sammiches. I cut ‘em in half crosswise after the sammiches are made to make it extra fancy. I don’t do that at home, however, cause we don’t need no stinkin’ extra fancy.
