(Old) A New Hope in the MMP

Holy crap - 6 oz is what I get if I have steak for supper. I can’t imagine eating a pound anna half of meat at one sitting. My SIL, OTOH, could probably handle it with ease. He has a bit of an appetite on him.

Tonight’s fare was the last of the slightly almost-crunchy bean soup. Cantaloupe later. Chillage now. The dishwasher is sloshing away and I just downloaded a book by an author I’ve not read yet. We’ll see if she’s any good. So, onward!

A third to a half immediately, the rest to take home for tomorrow.

The school has a very long year that ends the 2nd or 3rd week in June. And JtC, this is a virtual school, so not so many mobility issues.

I am currently frustrated with this whole day. I am ready for it to end. Can’t really talk about it, but it’s all annoying as hell.

I finished packing the kitchen today. I’ll get stuff packed in the bathroom this weekend, then pack the last tote. I’ll take some bottles to SIL when I go up for tea tomorrow. Next week, I’ll begin taking things to the car that can be pre-packed in the trunk and pack up the clothes that I’ll need at Sis’. I’m so ready for this to be over.

I bought The Spousal Unit some prezzies for our 10th anniversary next week. (We usually just have an expensive dinner and exchange cards.) Remember that double-walled Bodum wine glass she broke a week or two ago? I got her another pair. And a little 10th Anniversary tin dish. And a boiled peanuts kit (2) because she likes them and hasn’t had them since she left the South. (They haven’t arrived yet. They should be here Monday.)

I got her one more thing: A 7/25 - 12/26 cat meme calendar. I was going to give it to her next week, but it wouldn’t fit in a gift bag. Anyway, today is International Cat Day. She likes it. :grinning_cat: There is one problem: July 2026 seems to have a typo. It says [bolding mine], ‘Boss, I need a raise. My wife had nice children yesterday.’ I think that should have been ‘nine children’.

Howdy Y’all! We were bears who lunch and ‘twas good. I like this place cause I can get sushi. OYKW semi gags while I eat it. That’s a bonus. OK he doesn’t actually gag but he makes yuck noises. I also get to show off my mad chopsticks skilz. I only dropped one piece of sushi and that was back on the plate. Nappage and day drinkin’ then ensued. It continues to be a blah and cloudy day.

MOOOOOOM I did not develop the lawn must be perfect gene, or whatever it is that causes that. I have the lofty goal of not bein’ the worst yahd in da ‘hood. Second worst? I’m good with that!

VanGo I was bad about not usin’ leave time for most of my irk life. Don’t be like me. Long weekends are good if you’re into it.

Sensei glad you’re friend felt like gettin’ out for a bit. You are aces for helpin’ with the remodel job.

Pilot sorry about all the cancelled plans. That just sucks. Hope everyone is over the crud soonest.

Cookie glad the a/c is workin’ again. The elevator thing is inexcusable!

Flyboy become one with the mole. Understand the inner workin’s of its little mind. Then take off and nuke the obnoxious little critter from outer space.

I keep picturing myself as Elmer Fudd.

If I could only mow once a month I’d be very happy. My back lawn is above the leach field, so droughts don’t really bother it.

Gotta say no to this. I lived in North Cakalaky for a few years, and boiled peanuts were a “thing” there. I found them vile. You’re supposed to eat the shells too? Or how in the hell do you get the meat out of the shell? Sort of mealy and yucky. But I don’t like pickles, so take my opinion with a grain of salt. Or more, if you’re making pickles.

I’mma going to talk to the boss about vacation time. I like the idea of long weekends.

No idea. I’ve never had them. She likes them though.

So I walked up to the bus stop(A half mile! Uphill! Both ways!) and took the bus downtown. I had lunch at The Raleigh Times, then went to The Pour House record shop for another pint, and some LPs. And a 1950’s Glen Miller 45. The bus back was in need of some serious transmission and suspension work. Spot and I took a quick nap, and now we’re watching some preseason football. I also set up a wireless dongle for the micro PC attached to my TV.

Well, it’s International Cat Day today. As opposed to the usual daily “You Primates Must Fall Down and Worship Me for I Am A God” Day that cats celebrate.

I should figure out what my Brown pension would be. Not that it matters, because the only survivor I currently have to worry about is Spot.

If you dress the mole up as Brunhilde, be sure to post a pic.

It could be worse. You could go all Carl Spackler on it.

If they’re done right, you just squeeze the goobers right out of the soft shell. Warning though, don’t feed boiled peanuts to a five pound chihuahua in an enclosed vehicle.

Holy cow! I’m so happy Hubs couldn’t do that to us! I honestly wouldn’t have let him have any say at all, but AZ and CA are both community property states so I had to get his approval because it is also his money. It would have worked the other way had he been the one with the pensions. This isn’t Gilead thing, it usually protects the woman instead of the higher earning husband.

I did get a rather unpleasant surprise though. I had forgotten about the spend down involved if he goes into a nursing home and learning that I would lose half of my on-shore investments just confirmed our position that neither of us will be going into a nursing home.

There are lots of closed mines in WV and most of them aren’t capped.

Agreed and while you are doing it, make arrangements for Sadie. I know you plan to outlive her, but you never know.

Goes out and kicks up clumps of grass for you. I hope tomorrow is better.

I so understand! I hope the actual move is fairly painless and that you and Nelson settle in quickly.

The kids were nice so Mom took them to Disneyland and spent the mortgage money on tickets.

I adore you

Boiled peanuts were a thing in CA as well. You could buy them fresh at the bodegas and some gas stations. I once had a bed partner (that was back in my floozy days) who loved them and would bring a bag to give me every time I let him come over for the night. I agree that they aren’t my favorite way to eat peanuts so I would just put them in the fridge and throw them out when they got moldy.

While we all know who rules your house, the law says that Spot is property. It would be best if you had something in writing about where Spot should go if you get hit by a stray UPS truck.

So night is coming sooner now and the temps start dropping with the sun. The windows are open and the frogs are louder than the insects. Nights were never this noisy in AZ, not even back when we lived way out in the middle of nowhere on acreage. I’m loving it. I usually sleep with earplugs cause Hubs is so loud but now I push him over onto his stomach and go to sleep listening to the frogs. Then he rolls back over and I wake up and find my earplugs on the way to the terlet, cause as long as I’m awake, I might as well empty my bladder.

Before my genius doctor figured out how to stop my legs from acting up at night, I was getting up every hour or so and now I only wake up a couple of times a night, its just amazing what adding a few trace elements to ones diet can do.

 :joy:

I had boiled peanuts once when we lived in FL. It was like a mouthful of hot mud. No thanks. I like my peanuts roasted and lightly salted or smashed into peanut butter with, again, a little salt.

Cool night ahead. The house is open and I hope to do some mowage in the morning while it’s still cool. Heat promised early next week. ick.

School starts here on Aug 20. No after-Labor-Day start here.

It’s after 9pm here and time for the late night final, Did make it to the gym and exercised enough that a couple of cookies and an mini-apple pie dessert didn’t hurt the calorie count that much-it helped that this was Big Bowl O’Sallit day so not many calories there. Think I have all the notes in hand for soccer tomorrow, as long as the weather continues to cooperate (it’s supposed to).

And now to see what this chatty bunch has been on about.

flyboy, good luck on the Dalek program for the mole From Dr. Who, the Daleks were known to say "Exterminate! Exterminate! a lot. And nice presents for Spousal Unit.

JtC, wasps can be very persistant. Good luck.

Herald, school started here on August 4th, which is way earlier than I ever remember starting.

Oopsie, that amount does sound…excessive. Hope the new guy can help.

Pilot, glad all are well and I do so love the names of Minor League baseball teams…which reminds me, I need to go see the local AA team…the Trash Pandas…

FCM, on the last night of my recent cruise, I ordered from the special menu, a 20oz T-Bone cooked medium. Finished the sucker too…but mostly I stick to the 8-11 oz menu offerings when steak is on the agenda.

You and me both; about 10 days is as long as I can get away with. And I’ll be mowing into November.

:scream:

Only time I eat peanuts is when they come wrapped in an M&M…

And time to finish my last two You Tube vids for the night and head off to Slumberland. Catch y’all tomorrow.

Mrs. L.A. didn’t want her leftover rib-eye, because steak gets stuck in her teeth; so I ate it, with creamed spinach w/feta. Goo got some steak too. :grinning_cat:

That’s me. Three siblings and two parents, none of whom reached seventy; average age at death was 59. I 'm now 71 – an age I really didn’t expect to see.

A much more sensible way to eat them. And then the PB goes into banana sandwiches.

A less squished version of Dicey’s picture:

Good Mornin’ Y’all! Up and caffeinatin’. YAWN ‘Tis 72 Amurrkin out and cloudy with a predicted high of 84 with rain comin’ mid afternoon(ish). I shall go deal with candle duty and other stuff over to the church house this mornin’. I’ll go early so as to be out of the way before the Altar and flower guild folk descend to do their respective things. Then, as is our wont, we will devote the rest of the day to RDOS inactivities. Sup will be chili/cheese/onion/slaw dawgs with oven fries. Fartfest to follow.

Now I need more caffeine and to feed rumbly tummy. Then I will make myself somewhat presentable. I can get away with tshirt, shorts and sneaks for what I’m doin’ today.

Happy Sattidy Y’all!

Morning, mumpers! It’s currently 19c/66f with a predicted high of 22c/72f and partly cloudy. Weather app says “If this fucking weather was a soup, it would be Cream of Fuck Off.” Really? It’s not that bad outside.

Can you order them for delivery to a UK mumper’s address and have them just send the package onto you? That should bypass the tantrump tax although it might still get held up at customs as a gift. If you happened to know a UK-based mumper, right?

Fingers crossed for some good news from the, and I hope your daughter manages to get there this time.

We went on strike last year, but there is a long-running dispute over pay and conditions as usual. Last year the university imposed a pay increase that was well below inflation and well below what the unions were asking for, plus we’ve had contract changes, everyone’s been re-graded, and there have been some changes that disadvantage the lower-paid staff. And that’s all before they start negotiations for this year’s pay round.

Pilot I am sorry that your plans have been messed around by the crud. I hope everyone’s feeling better very soon!

I had an ok day at irk yesterday, the travel gods were messing around on the way home so I was a bit later than usual. I fed the cats, changed the litter trays, and made chicken curry for dinner. We watched a film and I was in bed by 11pm. Up early-ish this morning for the usual round of cat stuff, then I went to the gym. I’m back, showered and have a cuppa, then I am off to the hairdresser’s to get frou-frou’d.

I need to get some more bags of cat litter from the pet store on the little retail park so I have suggested to ‘im indoors that we got to Jack’s Café for lunch. He thinks this is a good idea. I also have some errands in town, I need to go to the library to get a PIN from them so that I can sign up to the app that gives me free audiobooks (so that I can cancel my Audible subscription). I have the right configuration of numbers on my library card, but I joined so long ago that I don’t have a PIN for it.

Later this afternoon, we’re heading into the Big City to meet some friends. They’re spending the day doing the Bulls in the City art trail, we would have joined them earlier except for the aforementioned hair appointment and errands. Instead, we’re meeting later for dinner so that will be fun.

Tomorrow I plan to be slothing on the sofa for most of the day, but that depends on how late we’re out tonight. Anyway, must dash!

Your story about mice, insulation and landlord gives me great pause. At least when I’ve lived near forested land, no it is not impossible to keep mice out. Instead it’s essential.

It’s certainly possible the Orkin tech is lying to you. IMO it’s far more possible the landlord is lying to you and doesn’t give a shit about feces and urine soaked insulation in his property your living area.

IMO you really need a trusted opinion, or climb up in the attic yourself. I don’t think his pet exterminator can be trusted to give that opinion.

You always know in the morning what you’ll be eating in the evening - do you make up a weekly/monthly/annual plan? Do you have a dinner dartboard? Do you roll the dice? Enquiring minds want to know… I generally do a mental inventory of the freezer some time in the afternoon, or I look in the fridge at the leftovers and figure it out then. I rarely wake up knowing what we’ll eat 12 hours later.

It cooled all the way to 60° overnight. Today we should see the low 80s. By Weds, they’re talking 90s again, dammit. Anyway, I’ll take advantage of the cool and mow today. I also need to clean the critter fountain. Right now, there’s vinegar cycling in the ice maker, so I’ve started my chores early. Go me!

Still dealing with the stoopit cough, but it still hasn’t settled a bunch of goo in my chest, which is encouraging. Last night, I took a cough drop (generic version of Hall’s cherry) and I didn’t cough all night, so I slept thru as far as I know. I consider that to be a good sign. I am going thru a lot of tissues to combat my drippy nose. And that’s the morning snot report.

I’ve been thinking maybe it’s time to stock up on yarn and start making lap blankets again. I’ve tried and rejected a number of trashy novels and I’m not ready for real literature. TV just doesn’t appeal either, and that includes the gazillion streaming services I have access to. Except if I start yarning, I need to find something to watch as I yarn. I shall continue considering.

And so my day begins. Happy Saturday!
