(Old) A new topic for Slackards in the MMP

*Adjusts plant scientist hat*
Technic’ly, it’s not the beans, it’s the bacteria that live in nodules on the bean roots that turn atmospheric nitrogen into a form plants can use - all three crops can then use it. This does mean that it doesn’t always work in a new plot, because the right bacteria need to be present. The squish were supposed to provide weed suppression and potentially keep the roots cool, IIRC. Corn doesn’t do well here, but I tried it when I lived further south.

Back late today, though I left irk early; went round another stoodint’s house on the way home, the one with the two little kids, from Africa. She’s now talking about mastering out of the course, rather than finishing, and keeps asking me for advice on really important stuff which I really don’t know a whole lot about, like the job market in her speciality, which is not the same as mine. I always

Her kids are nice, but could really use an off switch, or at least a dial, so you could turn 'em down a bit.

We played that same game with my childhood dog (a mini poodle) and she was so smart she understood the concept of “warmer”/“colder”.

We had a flat coat retriever growing up. The Game involved throwing a stick off the deck into the woods, while Bill stayed. When released, that dog would always manage to find that same stick.

I keep trying to catch up but I have a problem with wanting to respond to every post, and it got overwhelming, so I’ve spot-read and hope I didn’t miss anything major.

I may have more time to post now. Max’s person says she can’t afford to pay me. I was charging her only 1/4 of the going rate and kept finding excuses for her not to pay me, but she’s proud. She thinks she can manage walking him by riding her scooter. I told her to call me if she can’t manage it, and I’ll walk him for free. She tried to pay me $60, but I told her to spend it on Max. I’m very worried about her: she’s so debilitated, she can’t do much. It takes her 2 hours to shower and 10 minutes to walk 50 feet to her car. She’s also having memory issues. I’ve done all I can, though.

My daughter is doing OK. She’s been applying like crazy, even for jobs she’s over-qualified for, and she’s been getting interviews, so please keep digits/ears/eyes crossed. She’s received her last unemployment check, so she’s down to the wire.

I can run my ceiling fan again! And my washer works, too! The maintenance guy finally arrived, confirmed it was dead and not due to the circuit breaker, and fixed it by using the highly technical tactic of jiggling it. Voila! He listened to the ceiling fan and confirmed it’s silent. I told my upstairs neighbor. I run it now without guilt.

Slacking? Why, yes, thank you, I’m slacking right now. I remember reading in Cheaper by the Dozen thata Frank Gilbreth, the efficiency expert, used to ask to see the laziest guy in the factory, as he’d already figured out labor-saving tactics. So you see, we’re not slackers; we’re efficient!

A few responses to a few of the posts I read:

Pearl, we do love you and are always glad when you post. I’m so sorry about the loss of your job. I’m disgruntled on your behalf. Hope you get hired at a better job soon!

Taters, pedicures are an important part of the healing process. I’m glad you got one.

VanGo: I love throwing things out, too. It’s satisfying and somehow cleansing. Holy bejeebers, but you have a lot to throw out at the museum!

Mollie, I loved the Chloe video. What a smart pup! Ms. Dog does that and can find her hidden toy even if it’s in a cabinet or a drawer. However, she just finds ONE object. Chloe is amazing (and adorable)!

Red, I’ve been thinking of you. Sending hugs!

Hugs all around!

It was busy, but not horrible on the 100 and 200 Slide. J said the 300 wasn’t bad for once. Of course, the Irreg Belt computer went down, so I had to clerk a bunch of big packages. Damages didn’t seem bad, apart from everything being crammed together, so it took forever to separate. After work I stopped at the ABC store for some rye whiskey, since my brand was on sale. But laundry’s cleaned, and in the clothes dehydrator, so naptime.
They are easily confused. but wait till next week when I’m on vacation.

Gordie would pee on his own foot on purpose.

You floozy well!

I once had to send out 2 pallets of old pharmacy files to wherever they keep 15 year old CII paperwork in case the DEA gets a gnawin’ and a cravin’ to look at really old stuff.

{{{{nellie}}}} back at ya!

So at any moment I could just disap-

I thought about it. :stuck_out_tongue:

That’s how my dad used to walk Gracie, Nelson’s grandmother. He had a pooper scooper with a long handle to pick up her leavings.

That’s pretty much universally true of kids - it does apply to my grands!

And thanks for the plant education. I’m pretty sure the documentary I watched didn’t go so deep into detail, or if it did, I missed it.

I had to help out FCD’s brother today. He needed a new phone, since he boogered up his by keeping it in his front pocket, even when seated… yeah. I did a little searching and found the WalMart had a Consumer Cellular phone on hand - it’s one model up from mine and much better than the one he killed. So I picked him up and away we went. The guy working the electronics section was amazingly helpful. He swapped the SIM card for us and logged the phone into the store’s wifi so it could update itself. He also got BIL the case he wanted and a charger (I’m pretty sure his old charger would be fine, but it wasn’t my call.) Before we left the counter, I called to ensure the new phone was good to go - and it was!

So we headed back to his apartment and after some cussin’ and fussin’ I got the old phone to give everything to the new phone. I also got the phone number of his case worker team, just in case we need it. The whole evolution took a tad over 2 hours, then partway home I had to turn around because I’d left my tablet behind. Anyway, BIL is good to go and I guess I earned some brownie points.

Daughter posted a pic on FB - she took her spawn to a mall for the first time in their lives. The closest mall to us is, um, less than desirable. Many of the stores have pulled out and there have been problems with teens causing trouble. I honestly can’t recall the last time I went there.

Laundry finally got done (I had to leave between loads 2 and 3 to help BIL) and I think it’s time to assume the chill position.

You will all be relieved to know that I got my pedicure. Zeus is here and upset that his boy has left him behind, but he’ll settle down soon. It is clear that he has become very bonded to my son.

I leave in an hour for my follow-up appointment.

My brother once had a dog that could find her favorite rock when it was thrown into a brook.

Tossed another 200 lbs of old files today, then gave 2 filing cabinets to the ru-use place. I’ve got 4 more to go through. Then throw away the blah, blah blah. Probably 5 trips to the dump. I still won’t be happy with the place, but that’s all I’ve been given permission from the chief ditherer for getting rid of crap.

“Oh, hang on a second, we might need that if x or y breaks.”
Do you know what it goes to?
“No, but it might be necessary.”
To an exhibit we no longer own?

Not positive but I’m pretty sure BrightTree meant your sister’s husband but I could be wrong.

Weird day. Last evening I fell asleep sometime between 8 and 9pm in the lazyboy and didn’t wake up until shortly after 10. Finished watching a show I had paused then went upstairs to bed, except that I couldn’t get to sleep. Prayed, normally this helps me to fall asleep but perhaps nope, or maybe for 15ish minutes at a time then awake, then maybe asleep then awake again. This went on until sometime after 1ish when I was definitely awake with a pain across my chest. Then I remembered that I had left my car on the street when I got home so Hubs could put his in driveway first and then I never put mine in driveway. So threw on some clothes, went and pulled it into the driveway then proceeded to walk up and down the block enjoying the nice cool air and the beautiful moon. Did this for about 20 minutes then inside to the kitchen where I sat down, drank a glass of water, watched some dvr’d shows, played some computer games, completed the grocery list & checked that all the digital coupons had been clipped as well as ensuring that any paper coupons were clipped to grocery list and didn’t go back up to bed until around 6:30ish. Did fall asleep and woke up shortly after 8am. Just too tired to get up and get going so stayed in bed for almost 2 hrs checking email, Instagram, Threads, News.

Finally hopped up around 10 and quickly got ready to go Krogering. I had calculated that I needed to spend $51 to get up to 2000 pts for the month. I wrote down the price of everything I put in my cart then used my calculator to sum it all up. It came to $52.35 so I thought I was good to go. WRONG. I had forgotten to subtract the amount of the paper coupons that I was using.

So, like Metal Mouse I ended up short. When I looked at the receipt, it showed July pts of 1998 so I was 2 pts short of being able to fill up twice in August and get $1/gallon off each time. One good thing was that there actually was 2 gallons of our favorite Milo’s in the cooler. I took one. There’s been a real shortage of Milo’s Sweet Tea & Lemonade; there’s been a lot of weeks we’ve had to do without; last week Hubs went to a different Kroger and got the last one.

So after I unloaded the car and put away the groceries, I had breakfast at noon, while Hubs also had breakfast. Then we went to the local museum where we walked up and down the aisles logging a tad over 2 miles. Next stop was Kroger where I bought a tomato which was 1/2 lb and cost $1.22 netting me 4 pts, bringing total for July to 2002 pts. So my work was done here.

As soon as I post this, we’re going to Kroger gas to use the last of the June pts.

nellie I strongly hope that your daughter is able to secure employment. My daughter is in the same boat; her last unemployment check will be in August. It’s a bad job market. She has gotten interviews but not offers. I’m wondering if it’s because she was making quite a large salary from her last position and the ones that she’s applied for are with non-profits. She’s said she would have to take a big pay cut but is ok with that; however, I’m wondering if the employers are thinking that she wouldn’t be happy to do so and would leave after finding other employment.

taters I’m glad you were able to get your pedicure today. Hoping that your eye appointment came out A-OK.

Howdy Y’all! I did the things this mornin’ and then engaged in sloth. I did get sup fixed, which got et, and OYKW cleanded up afterward. We’ve been watchin’ stoopid teevee and now he’s watchin’ on of those crime shows he likes so much. We had a rain a bit ago that turned outside into a sauna. I walked out on the back porch for five minutes and broke a sweat. I was hopin’ to mow in the mornin’ but chances look slim now. Oh well.

I wandered off to find pics of my Earth Goddess phase. The Three Sisters method was made for desert gardens! Didn’t find the pics and then got distracted.

What she said!

I hope you and Ollie had a wonderful day and that your friends are feeling better.

You are a good and kind person for trying to help, but also a very wise person to know that you can’t save the world.

I’m glad you are running your fan again, what an annoying thing to be forced to worry about.

I agree, you do it very well!

Here’s hoping it came out well.

I used to be Records Management for the county. One of the responsibilities was to be sure that nothing was kept past retention date. Battling folks over destruction signatures was the absolute worse part of the job.

What if we need it someday?

Forgot to mention that Hubs & I did our civic duty today; filled out absentee ballots and dropped them off at the City Clerk’s office on our way to the museum.

As soon as we got home from museum and buying one tomato, I had Hubs marinate the ground sirloin so that I could have my cheeseburger sooner than if he had taken a nap first. I also made a cucumber-tomato salad with Tzatziki dressing.

Back from gassing up. Holy Toledo, that crazy man needs to stop with the shenanigans in the Middle East. Gas is up to $4.49 for regular; we paid $3.69 due to using Kroger points.
(not meaning to make light of what is happening in Middle East; but the mmp is generally not supposed to get political).

If he was here I would talk with OYKW about crime shows. I watch a lot of them. I know this sounds awful but when officers do traffic stops and the folks inside are sovreign citizens, I love to see their windows broken. And they act surprised at this, and don’t pay attention to warnings of “You will be tased.”

Good, and better!

{ blinks }

Considering the average shelf life of phone chargers, a backup might not be the worst thing.

As opposed to any other time in human history?

There are so many wonderful things about this sentence.

Most of all, though, is a dog having a favorite rock.

I call this “skimming stones.” It’s an absolute crap way to sleep, and I hate it when my body? brain? decide this is just how we’re going to get any rest tonight.

I love that a single tomato was the golden ticket to solving your problem. If only all of life’s issues were so easily fixed …

The only thing funnier than stitching this onto a pillow, would be finding said pillow for a dollar at some thrift store.

Up from naptime. Having a Brasil(Liqour with 130 bonaicals made by French monks and Brazilian sugarcane moonshine is a weird combo, but it works). Dinner is Cajun seasoned catfish, rice, and Trader Joe’s roasted corn with Jalapenos.

Yay!

Sovereign Citizen YouTubes are hysterical.

It is nice.

I just came out of the kitchen with a bowl of popcorn to hear Nelson growling from the depths of his being. What I saw was The History Guy chicken wings episode and he was growling at the birds on the screen. Silly dog!

Back from a mostly lovely afternoon!

Awww!! Chloé is so cute and clever! Ollie can barely find a peanut when I toss it in front of him. He’s good at finding things to eat he shouldn’t have, though. Like cherry pits.

Glad the dryer is behaving itself again, Metal Mouse! I’m with you: Slack and leave it until it breaks in a definitive manner.

Van Gogh, well done on getting rid of all that crap! It feels so good to do it, doesn’t it?

Nut, I appreciate the Three Sisters explanation – good stuff for gardeners to be aware of!

Nellie, I’m glad your fan got fixed properly. You are wonderful to help Max’s person as much as you have. I’m glad you recognize there must be a limit to what you can do to aid her, though. I’m keeping good thoughts for your daughter’s employment situation, and Cat Glove’s daughter, too. I hope it resolves well in their favor soon.

It’ll be like you fell over the event horizon of a black hole. You’ll never even know it happened.

And the Mumpers rejoiced!

I am in awe of your efforts, and Metal Mouse’s, too, to work the Kroger fuel points systems. Once in a great while the stars align and I’m able to get ten or twenty cents off per gallon. This is yet another area where I am a top slackard! Well done to you both.

Wise decision under the circumstances, swampy. Also adds to your slackard cred.

As one does. If you ever find them, I hope you will post them!

We did, though there was a bit of unpleasantness. Details below the fold.

You have the coolest perspective on life.

Gotta love 'em. Ollie barks at dogs on the tee vee. And at ants not on the tee vee.

So as mentioned, it was a very nice day. 'Twas great to catch up with my friend, who is relieved to have some answers for her health issues and is glad to get to work on resolving them. Ollie had fun with his pal, Iris, and romped until he could romp no more. We enjoyed a very nice lunch and I was duly spoiled.

The only unpleasantness was when I was climbing the stairs to their landing with Ollie in his crate to settle him in their mud room before we lunched. I don’t know if he shifted his weight in the crate or if I’m just a primo klutz (let’s be honest, it’s the latter), but I tripped on some material they have on the landing, managed to twist and land on my back. Despite my efforts, I cracked my head hard on the bottom metal rail of the protective fencing they have around the landing. I can’t remember the last time I hit my head with such force. Fortunately, being a hard-headed bit woman has its compensations, and I think I’m fine. My head is tender but no lump. I have some body soreness. Aleve will likely take care of that tonight. I definitely had my bell rung, and that part of the day wasn’t fun!

I think I should take it really easy for the rest of the weekend, though. Just to be on the safe side.

Hope everyone has a safe and enjoyable weekend!

Late night final time. Exercised, came home and watched TV/snacked, went to help with soccer ‘jamborees’ and got a few more calories burned and then came home and had my big bowl O’Salad for dinner. Rain is due anytime, how much and how strong is still to be seen.

**Cat Glove, ** stopped after exercising and got a pecan sticky bun for mid-day eating rather than fixing a couple of cheese dogs as originally planned. Ended up with 1903 points, so not quite as many as you, but still a nice savings with prices being what they are (for those without Kroger, you get points per dollar spent and 100 points=0.10 off per gallon of gas–and there are a couple of tricks to multiply points).

Van Go, I still have files from 1996 onward, I probably could get rid of most of them, but I like having the paper and they are hidden in filing cabinets so out of sight, out of mind…

Nut, coach a 6-7 year old soccer team sometime; kids do not have an off switch that I have been able to locate.

nellie, you are trying your best to be good people, I hope Max’s owner faces up to her lack of mobility and lets you walk him. Appendages crossed for daughter and hooray! for the ceiling fan.

FCM, glad you could solve BIL’s problems (well, at least this particular one). And they tore down one of the Malls near me to put up ‘open-air’ shops and apartments and haven’t been to the remaining mall in many years.

Taters, glad the pedi has been cured…

CatGlove, between exercise and diet, I find that I can go 15-16 hours most days without needing to nap, but hope your late-night wakefulness was a one-time thing. Best wishes to daughter on job hunt (yours too, Nellie)

red, I watched that episode of The History Guy this morning. Did not growl at the screen, however…

And closing in on 10pm, so off to Slumberland here shortly. Catch up with y’all tomorrow.
