Morning all! Thanks for the well wishes for Hubs. He is feeling much better today despite being totally worn out and sore all over.
While we were getting his discharge instructions, I made sure to ask his doctor specific questions so I’d have back-up when I told him that he couldn’t pick GG up for a week. He’s moving slow enough today that I went to the gym, but I don’t really trust him that much so I’ll probably stay home for the next week just so I can nag him as needed.
I am so sorry. They never live long enough.
Also sorry for the maintenance man, I hope he recovers. How awesome that the secretary’s subconscious told her to go and check on her. I wonder what it saw that she missed noticing.
Boo, I am also as outraged by dental bills as you are. Good dental health is so important for our overall health and happiness, it should be affordable for everyone.
And they will acknowledge their mistake but still expect you to pay for another one.
Thank you and everyone else for their good words. You are smart in the ways of cats “all of you things are belong to me”. There are very good reasons I always use a covered cup. My coffee cups even have lids!
I was reading before grade school but I didn’t really learn how to read as much as I learned to recognize the words. My comprehension and retention as well as my speed is great. Sometimes I get grumbly about this because I’ll get a great book that other people get to enjoy for days or even weeks and I’m done in hours.
I cannot spell. I had problems spelling before spellcheck and of course I’m so lazy that now I don’t even try, I just guess at the letters until the red squiggles go away.
We had plenty of books at home and got the encyclopedia yearbooks (I got to put the stickers in the encyclopedias) every year, but I still needed the library. I don’t remember having limits on the number of books I could have, but I do remember the one time the librarian took a book away from me. Mom talked to her and the agreement was that I could check out whatever I wanted, but the library ladies would put notes in the books they thought she should review. I’d give her the books when I got home and she would give them back after going through them.
The only one she didn’t let me read was Stranger in a Strange Land. That went on my list of things to do when I turned 18 and I will confess that I was pretty disappointed when I finally got to read it.
Has not-sober shoe been rubbing on you or something?
I hope that helped his heart heal.
I’m so going to murderize him when he’s fully recovered. He’s got a ten pound lifting limit. The very first thing he did when we walked in the door was grab GG for a picking-up.
Has she had her brushing yet?Once they get in the habit of being pampered, ya can’t stop!
I think you are right, I think I read it online somewhere…
I have always been a fairly good speller-I love words almost as much as I do cats, chocolate and coffee-but now I do the same thing til the red squiggle disappears. If it persists I just ask Siri the spelling, no need to tax my weary brain when the zeroes and ones are right there and eager to get sent into the game.
Any chance you could get two cones from the vet and put them on hubs wrists so he can’t pick up GG til the doctors clear it? Tie some bells on the cones for good measure.
Finally out of the freezer at 24F, although wind chill is still an issue.
Made a quick run to the grocery for necessities. That’s the excitement for today.
I ordered a couple of heating duct diverters that may help get the heat into the room instead of getting sucked out through the glass. Building maintenance has not responded to my requests, so I’m taking it into my own hands.
High point of the day: finished the NYT crossword and got Wordle in three. Such excitement.
Had another chat with the Ms about obsessing about Trump. It’s only been five days and it’s only going to get worse until it all implodes. Pace yourself, live our lives until it’s over. Please.
Afternoon all. Went to watch the 4-5 year old soccer players, it got me out of the house, kept me in a happy mood, and wasn’t any strain. Was going to go to the gym afterwards to do walkies, but felt rather tired so came on home. Will spend the next 4 hours trying not to snack and then coach my indoor team at 5pm and that should do it for my Saturday exertions. Up to 46F now, so pretty comfortable with no rain or clouds to be seen.
Sari, glad the power seems to be working OK now; hope it stays that way. And I can sympathize with parting with a beloved piece of clothing; my lightweight London Fog jacket was not a perfect fit and it wasn’t flashy (just a dull dish-washing brown), but I wore it for nearly 30 years because it just felt ‘right’ and it did it’s job to perfection. The one I have now is more than adequate, but there are still times I miss Ol’Brownie.
Flyboy, at least the cold apparently hasn’t affected your appetite too much…
And just scanned the TV listings and saw nothing of major interest, so will continue internettin’ and consider nappage. Take care all.
And if you need pallets moved around in a warehouse, then take a pic of it when you finish and call your boss, they’ve got you covered too (forklifts and phones. They’re pretty diversified.)
Right click on the word with the squiggles. You’ll get a selection box that includes suggested spellings. Pick one.
Up, caffeinating, breakfasted, floors swept / mopped / vacuumed and new Hepa filter installed on the vacuum cleaner. I’ll get sheveled soon and suit Nelson up to go to the dog park, then on to CVS for 'scrips and a trip to the drive thru (what sounds good tonight?).
You know how you will be reading something I’ve posted and come across a perfectly spelled but absolutely incorrect word and go all ??? Now you know how that happens.
They’re new fuel tanks for the boat and the design keeps changing because that’s the way he works. He comes up with an idea, works it all out, then realizes something won’t fit or that there’s a better way to approach it, and on and on to multiple designs. Back when I was doing engineer stuff, I’d work out the design in my head, think about all the ways it wasn’t good and redo it, still in my head, then finally commit it to paper (or CAD as the case may be.) Just different approaches to problem solving. Mine, of course, is the better way to do it! Anyway, he’s gone from 2 tanks per side to 3 per side. Now it’s pretty much down to making sure they are secure when installed. He was telling me what he wanted to do, and I came back with “Why not do this?” which he agreed was a simpler solution. Anyway, once we work out exactly where the filler hole needs to go, this design should finally be done. I hope.
I know I’ve mentioned this before, but here it goes again…
Some years back, a reporter set out to expose some parts of dental practices. He started out going to a dentist he trusted (and knew what was going on) and getting a thorough exam. He had something like one tiny cavity and that was it. Then he selected random dentists in random states across the country - he got appointments as a new patient just moving into town and had a preliminary exam.
He was told everything from “Your teeth are great - you’ve only got one teensy cavity” to “OMG, you need all your teeth crowned and multiple deep cleanings and it’ll all cost $$$$” It was pretty awful to see how many of the dentists lied and were willing to do unnecessary work. One of the biggest scams was the deep cleaning - unless you have serious pain and bleeding and such, you don’t need it. I feel lucky to go to a practice where they don’t foist stuff on me.
FCD has quit watching the news altogether. His thinking is “We can’t do anything about it anyway.” Rather fatalistic, methinks, but I don’t argue. It ain’t worth it.
We went to Salsa’s for lunch. I’m about to resume crocheting while watching the next murder on Death in Paradise. So goes my afternoon!
What is with all of these terrible teachers and librarians that so many of us encountered? Perhaps it’s a shared Doper origin story.
Edit - I don’t mean for that to come across as denigrating educators and librarians in general, the vast majority of which are good at their job and truly just doing their best.
There is definitely not proof in a dresser drawer somewhere around here…
I don’t generally enjoy watching sports, but that has to be the best age to watch. Just so dang funny.
There are so many naughty jokes that could be made about all this…
FCM thanks for that explanation. I think my brain works closer to yours. We won’t tell FCD this but his method sure seems to take a lot longer!
Also the anecdote about dentists is so true, and will only continue to get worse. Dental offices are increasingly being bought up by corporations and private equity money and there comes the usual pressures to increase profits. And even if a dentist doesn’t go that route and remains his own business owner, he likely graduated with hundreds of thousands of dollars in student loans, and that adds it’s own pressures.
Agreed. I’ll continue to resist as much as I can, staying informed, engaging proactively and positively in local governance, holding state politician’s feet to the fire with emails and phone calls to their offices and certainly never, ever missing submitting a ballot no matter how local or mundane the ballot. I volunteer several times a year as a polling place judge so that everybody can vote their conscience through the ballot box, even though we might disagree heartily.
I’m intentionally avoiding doomscrolling on FaceBook or Next Door, I choose my forums here carefully. No TV news, no CNN, etc. I read two newspaper daily, the NYT and my pathetic local paper on line through the public library. Plus news or opinion stories that get offered here on the Dope. Backing away from Doomscrolling starting the morning of Nov 6th helped greatly.
Maybe you can helpfully ‘break’ the tv for a few days so she can detox and detach from all the agita, gloom and doom about which we mere civilian mortals can do so little.
I’ve been doing podcasts. There are so many out there.
Jtc, I’m glad to hear recovery is going well. Better blood flow really works quickly.
Clickity and I went on the shopping trip. We are clearing freezing by a few degrees.
Phila is in green again. There will be a rally tonight at 7 with drones 2 blocks away. The front face of our building will be able to see the drone display from their windows. Football has taken over the town.
Because you are a decent and good human being. Unfortunately, a not-unsubstantial portion of the population is not. A lot of these scammy dentists fall neatly into the fraud triangle - they have opportunity, there is incentive, and they can rationalize it to themselves.
Hey now, sounds like you’re trying to join the Hitachi discussion
FairyChatMom, I’m 75, I think. Born in Aug. 1949, so I started school in, um 1955?. I always have trouble with that age-calculating stuff. I’m old enough to not get offended when somebody says “How old are you?”
General Motors sent me to Janitor School (called Scrub U,) and I learned a concept called Crowdrift. The instructor came up with that when he and another instructor saw a crow on a snow-covered stop sign. “Man, that crow is really black,” said the other one. “That’s because of the contrast against the snowdrift.” Be patient, I’m coming to a point eventually. So, the concept is that sometimes it’s better to leave the dirt, if you don’t have time to clean the whole area. Otherwise, your clean crowdrift will call attention to the overall dirt.
Misnomer, I heard (on Wait,Wait, Don’t Tell Me, or maybe from you) that the plural of Lego is Lego.
