(Old) An Air of Finality in the last 2024 MMP

No, it’s great, you’re helping me face it more calmly.

Thanks for sharing what it was like for you. That’s great to hear. I’ve told my SIL that every looks like it’s been dipped in tea or has coffee stains. And I can’t turn on enough lights and lamps to chase away the gloom. I can’t drive anywhere unfamiliar after dark. Walking from my car up the sidewalk at night to my porch is tempting fate. Not being able to read regular print or street signs was the last straw. 3 or 3:30 in the afternoon my eyes would just quit on me, they’d go on strike. “Nope, we’re not going to read those words no matter how big you make that print. We’re done for the day. Good luck tomorrow”.

And I thought I was the only one who noticed this.

My brain went the same place as yours. At least it was only pillaging. :stuck_out_tongue_closed_eyes:

Definitely not at all. Nope. You’re not alone.

@nelliebly Good news on the safety net.

Congratulations JohnT!

Forgot to start the dishwasher last night, so it’s currently sloshing away. Electric’s cheaper at night, so we usually run it then, or during the afternoon if it’s sunny (solar panels). Oops.

Today’s the last day of vacation, then there’s the weekend and then I have to go back to work on Monday. New year, new title, new tasks, so it should be interesting.

We got a bit of a dusting last night, but not enough for proper pretty as the grass is poking through. Hubby wants to go to the butterfly zoo (link) for the climate. Plus :butterfly:. We’re getting smarter (well, forgetting the dishwasher may disprove that), and we’re bringing snacks and water to the zoo, because their cafeteria is just not good. Then we plan to go somewhere else for a late lunch.

Up, caffeinated, and sheveled. Off to heave. And firday is my Firday.

Morning, mumpers! it’s currently -1c/31f with a predicted high of 2c/36f, and sunny. Weather app says “Who likes fucking cold bullshit?” I think the answer to that is :crickets:

That’s such a shame, since the gym should be for everyone. I understand about the music though, mine plays some of the most boring and uninspiring stuff (usually rap). I don’t think they’ve noticed that most people wear headphones so they’re not having to listen to the dismal crap.

Congratulations, and congratulations!

Major crappage :frowning: I’m sorry, that’s the last thing you and FCD need right now. You’ve still got more than enough going on without this as well. I hope TPTB don’t start hinting that he should move in with you, that’s far too much to put on both of you.

I’m glad you’re feeling better, so now you can start planning all the fun stuff again!

Cookie I haven’t been to any of my school reunions, I have very little interest in knowing what’s become of a bunch of people who made my life a daily misery.

Wow! That is amazingly good news - good to know that you have it in writing too. That will give you much more breathing space while you look for something else, and it means you won’t have to move in haste either.

More good news then, I’m happy that he’s feeling better even if it means he’s on the naughty step already

I am sorry you grew up with that stigma, but I don’t think you are alone in that by any stretch. Mental issues are some of the most unquantifiable things - you know there’s something wrong, you might have an idea of how to fix it (or stop it happening) and that might work all the time, or some of the time, but you still can’t explain it to other people. Then you find that whatever’s “wrong” isn’t always wrong the same way all the time, and what worked before doesn’t work now…it’s so difficult to find effective treatment and keep it being effective.

It’s bright and cold out there today, icy underfoot and we have weather warnings for anything between snow, ice, freezing rain and blizzards. Who knows what we’ll get? My commute to campus this morning wasn’t too bad - I consulted various travel oracles and got strange results. I left home in time to catch a bus at 6.55am which was roughly on time. The travel app I used told me the bus times were 6.55am then nothing until 7.29am (meaning the 7.07am, 7.15am and 7.25am services weren’t running). No idea if that’s a permanent change or just because it’s a slow week.

The rail app told me there were trains at 7.18am then nothing until 7.36am when there should be trains at 7.15am, 7.28am and 7.33am. I didn’t expect there to be a 7.15am since the Avanti drivers are on strike but there’s no reason why the other services shouldn’t run, unless again it’s because there are fewer travellers this week. The trains out to campus were ok for a change, the cross-city line must have decided we needed a break from the daily trauma.

The office is still very cold and damp, there’s a lot of condensation on the windows and the metal frames have water pooled on them. We have had a dehumidifier running since yesterday and were told to leave it running for 24hrs, it had turned itself off by the time I arrived as the water reservoir was full. I emptied it into a bucket, put the reservoir back, and it’s started off again. The nice lady from Facilities will be coming back this morning to check up on things and see the state of the windows.

Off to drink more tea and faff about with whatever jobs I can find to do that don’t involve our main student record system because it’s got an unspecified fault that IT are investigating!

I feel the same way about my ex-schoolmates. Escaping them was a very good thing.

Good Mornin ‘ Y’all! Up and caffeinatin’. Yawn ‘Tis 30 Amurrkin out and clear with a predicted high of 61 and N.O.S. Today will be a day of high RDOS inactivities. It’s cold out so a good day to stay inside and warm. Sup will be leftovers from the NYD feast. Plus there’s ice cream cake!

Now I need more caffeine and to feed rumbly tummy. Then, onward into the day! Rah.

Happy Firday Y’all!

My phone woke me up at 4.30 am.

< Beep >

Slowly I turned ; fumbled with the phone ; saw the province-wide Emergency Alert had gone off.

Checked the warning:

Hi ho, hi ho, it’s off to work I go.

My bladder woke me at 4:30, but I managed to fall back to sleep for 2 more hours, so yay! When I dragged myself out of bed around 7, the outdoor temp was around 24° and we’re only promised low 40s today. Major ick ahead, with rain/snow/sleet threatened Sunday night thru Moanday night. FCD was planning to drive to the Eastern Shore on Moanday, but I need to disabuse him of that notion. Wish me luck! And based on the long range forecast, we won’t see 40s again till Feb. Maybe.

The furnace kicked on a few times - further proof of how cold it is. Sometimes the heat from the pellet stove works its way back to keep the hallway at 70° (the thermostat there is set at 68, I think) but not last night.

The whole BIL situation, while irritating, is really sad. He’s lonely and he’s terrified about his financial situation. Even after being told multiple times that he won’t have to pay for the helicopter transport to the hospital, he’s expecting a bill for that. And we’ve told him there’s money from his inheritance to cover his copays. Plus the hospital has programs to help those who can’t pay their bills and I’m sure he qualifies.

I’m pretty sure this all goes back to having to declare bankruptcy in FL. He tried to help a couple of people who essentially robbed him of thousands of dollars, running up his VISA and draining his savings. They claimed they’d pay him back when they got their insurance money settlement, and when they’d sucked him dry, they were gone, leaving him broke. Since then, he’s been terrified about not having enough money.

Anyway, that’s just one of the things from his past that hangs over his head. The other, I’m sure, is his ex who was a thief in that she’d quit paying rent or other bills and they’d get kicked out or have to buy another car or whatever, so his time with her was never settled (plus, frankly, she had mental issues of her own, despite holding a pretty good job as a bookkeeper.) So add that to the brain issues suffered since birth and further damage sustained by his fall and skull fracture 10 or so years ago well, he’s got a lot against him, and that’s why FCD continues to help, even tho BIL hates him. There’s a lot of crap going on…

It’s laundry day, so I have that to entertain me. Roxy lost a tooth last night (well, SIL pulled it since it was barely hanging in there) and apparently dollars from the Tooth Fairy are covered in glitter, according to Daughter.

And that’s all the news that’s fit to print so far. Further updates as situations warrant.

Oh, and Happy Firday!!

Yoiks! Wear 2 pairs of socks, then, right? I got a shiver just reading that!

Good morning and Happy Friday.

It’s 42F, and a light rain is falling. It’s supposed to rain throughout the morning and into the early afternoon. Once the rain stops, it’ll remain cloudy, and our expected temperature is 48F. It’s just been far too warm for this time of year. Flowers are coming up, fer chrissakes. I keep saying it, but it will be an awful year for bugs if we don’t get a severe cold snap soon.

I have not attended a single class reunion and don’t plan on ever attending. My reasons for not attending are much the same as some others have mentioned here.

Congratulations, John T.

Nellie, I’m glad you have a reprieve on the rent. I wasn’t born in Germany. My parents met in Germany around 1962 and were married around 1963. My mother is from a small Bavarian village. They were sent to Oklahoma and I was born there. In 1966, we moved to Springfield, OR, when my Dad was sent to Vietnam for a year. We returned to Germany in 1967 and returned to the US in 1970. I’ve always wanted to return to visit, and maybe someday I will. However, I doubt I’ll see any of my cousins if I do because we don’t know each other.

Like my mother, I am the oldest of my siblings and cousins. So far, none of my generation has left this mortal coil.

One more day of work to get through, and it’s my short day. I may burn some comp time because there isn’t much going on that I can address right now, and folks I need to speak with are still on leave. I need to pick up some dog food too.

FCM, I’m genuinely sorry for your BiL’s issues and that they continue to impact your husband. I hope a solution is found that eases everyone’s mind, although, in reading about your BiL, I don’t think he’ll ever rest easy.

I need to get the last of the dishes in the dishwasher and get it running. Hugs to everyone, just because sometimes we all need one, whether we know it or not.

They’re your Dawgs? You should fire them all and get new ones!

Not a problem. My father died when I was in tenth grade; brother in '85, a week after his 46th birthday. I seriously had not expected to live to my present age.

Is that in ferrets or in centipedes?

Does it really matter at that point? On either scale, that’s WAY TOO DAMN COLD for humans.

Today I’m taking my mom to the doctor. I ordered a cane with a retractable tip for ice and snow. It’s supposed to come in the mail today. It’s going to be anybody’s guess as to whether or not it makes it before we leave the house. At least I’ve got plenty of melty stuff for the ramp.

I’ve become a compulsive email checker in the past couple days still waiting for a response from my resignation. They have a clause in the contract that you sign with them that you have to give X amount of weeks notice (about twice as many as expected normally) or else you have to pay them X amount of dollars. I honestly tried to give a notice at first, but then it just amped up my anxiety more, which relates to other issues that might compromise my safety. So, I decided that it just wasn’t worth it and I’d have to take my chances on them charging me a fee for quitting. I guess that’s what I’m really waiting for, to see if they’re going to say I owe them. At this point, I suspect I won’t hear anything until Monday when things start up for the year.

I believe I slept a good 6 hours before waking with no wacko dreams. Took my thyroid pill and got 2 more hours.
Its 26 with snow coming down.
I hope to make it to grocery store.
Thankfully, someone got me 2 months worth of bus rides so its affordable.

Ferrets and centipede are the same at -40.

Aran Isle sweater. Plus Inuit mitts (big leather gauntlets that fit over my regular gloves). Car started okay. Plugged it in at the office parkade.

We might get up to 6" of snow by Moanday, which is more than we’ve gotten in the last 3 years, I think. Shovels are in the garage, awaiting deployment, so there’s that.

I’m showered, dressed, and the first load of laundry is being laundered. It’s dreary and overcast outside - might be a good day to deploy the breadmaker.

Dominic Flandry - Wikipedia The series is pretty old (then again, so am I) but I am enjoying re-reading it.

I was born about 11:20pm and my brother came along 13 months later at 1:30am, so we both kept our mom up late.

nellie, glad you got some more time for consideration (and got it in writing); maybe they are losing too many folks at your apartments and want to keep them occupied (and I see by a later post that seems to be the case).

FCM, I occasionally get Pop Secret (90 cal) or SkinnyPop popcorn (80 cal) but do like variety in my snackage; will take a look at the seasoning options.

And I can understand BIL’s fears after being scammed like that, I try to make it a practice of never giving or loaning more money than I can afford to lose at any time, but as I get older I do worry more about scams. Having all y’all folks here does help a lot…I mean that.

:scream:

BBBoo, much and many good wishes for the January surgeries; I am sure they will go well (still will cross many appendages when the days come).

Dicey, enjoy the butterflies. And need to run the dishwasher here in a couple of days, having only one person to dirty dishes makes it less of a chore.

boo fae, not sure what music my gym plays, it’s not real loud and if it gets obnoxious i can always take my hearing aids out…

Piper, That would be apocalypse-level cold here in N. Ali-bama, take care.

Taters, I concur, most things won’t get back to normal until Monday. Hope it goes well for you.

Well, obviously I’m up, have broken fast and will shortly get dressed and do my Firday shopping, have the list made up and will probably find a couple more things that I forgot. Indoor soccer resumes tomorrow so that should occupy most of my Sattiday. It’s 45F heading all the way to 50F today, but clear skies and no rain (that is due on Sunday). Probably will get some swimming in but otherwise not much on the agenda.

Have a good Firday all.

That’s pretty fluffin’ cold! Keep yourself warm.

Up, caffeinating, a load of towels / grocery bags in the dryer, throw rugs in the wash and everything else on deck. The plans for the day include mending, restocking the spice rack, making some veggie broth and a trip to the dog park. It’s supposed to get colder tomorrow and Sunday, so Nelson needs to burn off some energy while he can.

Stay safe and healthy y’all!

Even with 2 of us, I may run it every 3-4 days depending how much cookage I do and how many times we decided to eat out.

Second load is in the washer, first in the dryer - duh! I’ve got the makin’s for a loaf of cinnamon-pecan bread in the bread maker.

We got a notice of assessment on our property in yesterday’s mail, so, of course, property taxes will go up - big surprise there… :stuck_out_tongue: I do think their market value assessment is low - not sure if they’ve taken the shop building into consideration. I’m pretty sure if we put it on the market, we’d get at least $50K more than their assessment. Not that we intend to sell, at least not any time soon.

MIL’s check from FIL’s pension came in the mail also, and FCD called them and let them know that they can stop sending it. I guess it’s a good thing she never did have it on direct deposit - all he had to do was void the check and that’s that. We just need to get to the 2 local credit unions, cancel one account and get her name off the other account. The last thing will be spreading their ashes at Cades Cove this spring.

Guess I’ll read till the first load comes out of the dryer.
