nellie, usually the 5 kitteh toes are on the front paws, the 4 toed paws are the back. The key word being usually. Then there’s always the mitten-toed polydactyl kittehs, which I think shoe’s house panther Monkey is. My Moxie is a mere 18 toed imperious house panther.
The key is to remember each of those toes, however many, come with a rapier claw.
… Most cats have 18 toes, with five on each front paw and four on each back paw. However, some cats have more toes due to a genetic mutation called polydactyly, which means “many digits” in Greek…
It’s 48F and cloudy. It will be overcast all day, with a couple of rain showers in the afternoon. Our expected high temperature is 52F. It’s just too freakishly warm. I want some WINTER, please.
Happy Birthday, Red!
FCM, I agree with what others have said concerning your situation; you’re not cold; you’re pragmatic. I also agree with your and others’ assessment about JtC posting when she can.
Shoe, I hope snikky snek is on the way to being warm.
My youngest uncle was only eight years older than me and was my mother’s youngest brother. There was a 20 age difference between them. He is no longer with us; he decided to kill himself. Sadly, no one misses him. He was a real jerk.
I went out yesterday and got the pups their food and something to gnaw on. I picked up lunch, then left the house again to run down to Tar-jay for some items. I’ve been scraping the edges of my eyeshadow kits for some time, so I finally went out and got some. I don’t wear make-up all that often anymore. I wear it on in-office days, to go out to dinner, or if I’m in public for an extended time. Consequently, my make-up lasted a lot longer. However, the eyeshadow containers were looking pretty grim.
I don’t plan to do much around here besides laundry and running the roll-suck. The stairs are covered in the pups’ fur, and it shows. Those two are shedding machines. I may or may not wash the floor. If I wash the floor, it means keeping the pups in their kennels while it dries, so I’ll play that by ear.
It’s back to the grind tomorrow, and I’ll be in the office. It’ll be the first in-office day since the week before Christmas. I’m not looking forward to it. A couple of our employees caused some problems on Friday, and now I have to talk to both of them about procedures—just such a PITA. I am not their supervisor, but I will have to address it because their supervisors are unaware of this procedure. There is even more tension between my organization and another in the building because of this latest debacle. I’m trying to maintain good working relationships with other agencies in the building, and one of those particular employees has set us back quite a bit. I’m pretty frustrated.
Well, I think I will allow myself a little grace time and peruse real estate listings. I peruse them and mumble, “I wouldn’t pay a million dollars for that; the lot is far too small, and the floor plan is stupid.”
Good morning all. Stayed in bed (except for 2 trips for sewage removal) until nearly 8am and then went to Kroger for the Sunday NY Times and some other stuff I didn’t get on Firday. So day is off to a late start, will be heading out to Logan’s Roadhouse for their meatloaf not long after I finish this. It’s 45F heading to 54F and the rain is not due until after 6pm, so that works out well. outside of watching tackleball while I pedal or walk in-place at the gym is the only activity I plan on today, albeit I put a few things away and may actually do a little cleaning in the kitchen. Big Laundry Day will be tomorrow.
A most happy completion of this trip around the sun, Red!!
FCM, I can understand FCD’s feelings, but they both made it to their 90’s and did well enough for most of it, so give him a little time to adjust, but if it continues for weeks find a way to ‘suggest’ counseling. IMHO as always.
Taters, sorry to hear of the work-related woes, some people make mistakes, while some are just…rump cavities… And in the Sunday Times they have a small real estate section showing 3 places that cost about the same around the country, and OMG the dollar doesn’t go as far as it used to…
Cupcakes, I can remember a few days where getting the ice off my windows was a major task. And nice view at the church.
shoe, best wishes for Charm.
boo fae, good luck with the weather.
swampy, horse ovaries?
That’s a Fusion you don’t hear too often…
And time to dress up nicely and procure my Sunday dinner. Take care all.
I’m sitting here in a winter storm watch, with more to come perhaps. -9 degree windchill. Trying to figure out if I should try to drive to my daughters (5 miles, 15 minutes at most) for my sacred grandma play day or if that’s foolish since my presence is not essential. No cars are traveling my neighborhood streets but city traffic cams show no impediments on major thoroughfares that the city has brined and plowed. My street is always the last to be plowed and if it happens it’ll be late tomorrow.
A kind neighbor shoveled my walk for me, even all the way up to my porch. Nice young kids and a sweet mini greyhound, quiet just out of college kids. I consider them my snow angels.
If I decide to go I may break down and use my remote starter to defrost the ice glaze on the car windows. I can stand in my picture window in the living room and press the button. It’s magic. The police say not to because it makes cars easier to steal and the environmentalists disapprove, which I understand, but they also aren’t out in front of my house wearing an oxygen concentrator and using a cane hacking away at ice covered car windows.

Happy birthday, Red!
It’s way too cold for me today – currently 28°F with a “feels like” of 18° and an expected high of just over freezing (35°F) – but it’s mostly sunny, and blessedly a little less windy. When I went to the grocery store yesterday I wore fleece-lined yoga pants and a thick, fleece-lined sweatshirt for the 1-mile drive/quick errand, and was warm enough except for completely underestimating the effect of the wind chill on my bare hands. When I take Bailey outside I always wear gloves, but simply hadn’t considered them for the grocery trip. D’oh!
WifeBFF didn’t feel any better after she woke up again late yesterday afternoon, so now we’re tentatively planning for me to go there for lunch today. She’ll confirm with me sometime before noon. Her health is wildly unpredictable: I’m hopeful, but part of me also expects that we’ll have to try again next weekend. (I always completely understand, but she gets super frustrated/annoyed whenever she has to cancel.) I got HusbandBFF a box of Little Debbie oatmeal creme pies as a stocking stuffer – we both love them – and I’ve already had to buy a second box with a later expiration date and eat the “old” ones: if we keep putting off our gift exchange, I might have to make that noble sacrifice once again. Woe is me!!!
We’re expecting 6-10" of snow overnight. Snow predictions around here often wind up fizzling out, but I’d say there’s a fair chance we’ll see at least a few inches. There was a weather warning via the cell network yesterday, and this morning the power company sent a “be prepared” email. I’m mostly ready for a possible power outage: I’m charging all of my gadgets and portable power supplies, so I’d have light and entertainment (dead-tree books would be a last resort ), and I have plenty of warm clothes and blankets if needed. But, I did just realize that I don’t have much food that doesn’t need to be nuked. Hmm. Assuming the gas stove’s pilot light would still work, I know that some of the frozen stuff has “bake” instructions…and I suppose I could take a guess at the others…but I’ll also want to open the freezer door as infrequently as possible. Hmm. Here’s hoping the power stays on.
I find that I always have to clear off the trunk lid in order to open it, but I suppose I could keep them in the back seat. My previous car didn’t have a back seat, so I got used to just keeping that stuff in the house.
I always sleep better in a very cold room, too. I don’t know if I’d turn the heat off entirely, but if I didn’t have a 16-year-old doggy to keep comfy the thermostat would definitely be in the 60s overnight.
I hope Charm is alright!
I’m not much of a makeup-wearer: some color corrector/light liquid foundation, to be sure (my skin tone is uneven and my eyes have permanent dark shadows), but that’s about it on a regular basis. If I’m getting dressed up I might wear some eyeshadow and eyeliner, but that’s about as fancy as I get and it happens pretty infrequently. Never mascara or blush, but I’ll add some lip tint if I’m going to be on stage (I only apply it once, though, and it never lasts long). Anyway, my point is that my current eyeshadow is quite old – I think Obama was in office when I bought it – and still looks almost new.
Serious question, though: does makeup – like eyeshadow – ever “expire”?
I believe that was Mumper for “hors d’oeuvres.”
I’m not a grandma so I can’t really weigh in, but FWIW I vote “foolish.”
A guilty pleasure of mine too, which I deal with by not ever buying them but I’m really happy if I come across one out in the wild like on a cookie tray at a meeting. You never saw an old lady move so fast!….
You’re a soft-hearted Mumper so you get to weigh in. I’m leaning to foolish but dreading defrosting the car in this windchill. If it keeps adding snow and ice while I’m there I’ll need to be resolute and leave early before it’s dark or ill-advised to stay. At least it’s only 5 miles and on mostly major city thru streets…mostly. Looking forward to my first AWD Suburu drive on my new tires and, if the truth is known, the remote starter. Living the life. Scarlet is my car’s name, given to her by my grand daughter, named after her favorite therapy dog at school, a ginger golden retriever.
Should be a quiet, cold, windy day today. No excuses to put off laundry at any rate.
The cold front blew in early this morning and the wind isn’t letting up. Unfortunately no snow. I had hoped we would get a couple of inches and the office would be closed, but alas it is not in the cards.
That family tree has the makings of a totally off-the-wall TV series! And I thought our family was bizarre when my uncle (my mother’s brother) married a girl just a few months older than I was (she was wife #5.) I imagine we all have our share of interesting family members.
I’m absolutely no kind of expert, but I would imagine a gradual cooling and heating isn’t nearly as bad as an abrupt temperature change, so I’m gonna say Charm will be fine, if pissed off at you.
One of my sister’s friends introduced me to that term back in the 80s - it’s been around a while.
I just made a cuke-onion salad. FCD is napping - he’s been sleeping badly of late. It’s still stoopit cold out, tho above freezing and no wind to speak of… yet. I think I need to get back to my book.
Not a bad breakfast at Hell’s Kitchen this morning, although the huevos rancheros were strangely tasteless, despite all the different ingredients. Really lacking in salt, for one thing. But the tortilla was satisfyingly crisp. My only real complaint is that the wife’s niece and the niece’s spouse tend to have spats in public. I really hate that.
The day has clawed its way up to 5F after starting out in negative territory. The wind makes it really brutal to be outside. A good day for staying indoors.
Somewhere out there in the world, I have two uncles who are younger than I am, though I’ve never met them.
Shoe, I hope Charm is OK; I expect he’ll be fine.
Happy Birthday, Red!!!
Unfortunately, I suspect our wonderful JtC is going through some not-good stuff right now. I too am worried about her, but I agree with those who say we should let her have her space. She’ll come back when she’s ready.
Back from dinner, the pen I took to start the NY Times puzzles didn’t woke (ballpoints only from now on) so debating if I can solved 14-down while pedaling a stationary bike. One way or the other, need to work some calories off. Rain due sometime this afternoon, but no snow.
BBBoo, I think you’re going to talk yourself into going to visit the kids, if so, drive carefully and be back before dark!!
Oopsie, I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again; the three most feared words in the english language are “wind chill factor” . Hope the Weather Wizards overestimated as they are wont to do. And thanks for the definition.
OK, a little more internettin’ and then head off to the gym about 2pm.
There’s no ‘might’ about it. They’re in. What’s being talked about is whether they will get the #1 seed.
hard boiled eggs?
oh. never heard that expression before.
Makes the 17* when I left for mass downright balmy. I was warm. Once again I was layered up. Lectored today, was just supposed to do the first reading from the Old Testament but the other lector was a no show so I also proclaimed the second reading from the New Testament (one of Paul’s that wasn’t offensive) and read the Prayers of the Faithful.
Ok, tell me this is weird. The book I’m reading is in 2 parts. The first ends shortly after the Armistice in 1918. The second begins in the spring of 1922. The page between the two reads "INTERMISSION " - ???
And, no it’s not a book based on a movie or play. Just weird.
But anyways, I’m having nachos for lunch(chorizo, jalapenos, tomatoes, onions, olives, smoked cheddar and pepperjack). Spot was doing zoomies, missed a turn, and Thelma & Louise-ed himself off the top of the sectional.
Yes.
The MMP is the only thread that needs a glossary.
And I hope you have the danger noodles defrosted.
< plots Spot toe counting >
True. plus if you keep watch, you can always turn it off if someone gets close.
I have in my back seat, and one hanging in the coat closet, in case I have to chip my way into Carmen
Where is Charm from 1-10 on the reptile anger scale.
“I was not about to write 100 pages of filler, and I fear my readers might be confused by an abrupt time change.”
The snow brush is in the boot, but the ice scraper is in a pocket in the driver’s door. So I just have to hope the keyhole in that door doesn’t ice up, because there isn’t on on the other side of the car.
“Horse doovers”, according to an old Punch cartoon.
My sister was a mother at 19, a grandmother at 37, and (IIRC) a great-grandmother at 61. (Unfortunately, she died at 56 , so she never got to see any of that generation.) The youngest of my siblings’ eight children is 25 years older than my first child. And I once pointed out to my wife that technically, our generation includes both my brother, born in 1939 (and a year older than my mother-in-law), and her sister, born in 1978. Family relationships can be strange indeed…
Isn’t the NYTimes considered the penultimate woke paper that that pen should hustle to work for?
Most gas stoves nowadays have an electronic ignition so no pilot light but if you have a match/lighter to light the burner the gas will work to cook. BTDT (once I figured it out), which is why I try to keep a matchbook or two stashed around, for candles/oil lamp/stove cooking in an outage.
Pretty much my system. Wee little shovel, blanket, hat, extra gloves and container of cat litter goes in the boot. I can crawl over the second seat to get to the emergency stuff if need be, won’t need to open any doors or get out. Need to add a flashlight and perhaps one more blanket.
When I worked as a nurse in Boston in an inner city public hospital I had a 28 year old grandmother in my NICU. She’d given birth at 14 and that daughter gave birth to premature twins at 14. I was 33 at the time and still hadn’t had my first child.
BBBoo - are you to be a grandma again?? Did I miss an announcement?
I decided to give the flavorless cherries a last chance - I mixed them with some sugar and almond extract and made them part of a (now-baking) cobbler. We shall see how it works out.
FCD has gone to check on the boat. I was originally going to accompany him but I really didn’t want to. So I’m going back to my book now that the cobbler is baking. Wonder if I should ask him to stop at Aldi for some vanilla ice cream??
Can’t remember if I’ve announced it, but yes. Mid March. They lost a pregnancy late 2 years ago and she has deathly hyperemesis so we haven’t been sure that this one might work out until an ultrasound a few weeks ago. A little boy, due date March 21st.
I never dared to hope for another grandchild. I’m both gobsmacked and over the moon with joy now that we can relax a little.
I’m hoping to get through my cataract surgeries and have that reasonably settled down so I can be fully boots on the ground by the first of March or so. A overnight go bag stashed at their place, etc. The critical surgery on my good eye is January 30th.
Howdy Y’all! RDOS inactivities have prevailed today. However, we did have BLT’s and oven fries for N.O.L. so I guess that counts as productivity. The biiiiig trash can has been hauled all the way down to the road for pickup tomorrow, as well. That’s two productive things! I may be in danger of losin’ my RDOS status.
BBBoo I know sacred grandkids time is important, but not important enough to risk injury, OK? Never mind. The grandma is strong in you.
Oopsie hope you get to see your friends today. My favorite Little Debbie’s snack is the Swiss rolls. I can’t buy a box of ‘em for fear of it turnin’ into a single servin’ container. I buy a little two pack when the cravin’ is strong.
MetalMouse horse ovaries, the little food things folks serve at parties.
shoe I imagine pretty much any non-mumper would think stroke after readin ‘ pretty much any of my posts.
