Since I will have to stay in, maybe I’ll make bread so I can have toast. I don’t buy much bread, preferring to do my own.
Got a letter from Housing. They’re still threatening to raise my rent as I still cannot get a letter from the place I filled out forms in Sept. In fact, the place has apparently shut down, the signs are gone.
God will have to come through.
Also asking my friend ( hes friends with a guy I went to school with) for help.
He was laid off in Oct. But asked him for Christmas and still need his help now as I won’t be getting paid til after I start training.
Such is my life of poverty.
BBBOO: Most gas stoves nowadays have an electronic ignition so no pilot light but if you have a match/lighter to light the burner the gas will work to cook. BTDT (once I figured it out), which is why I try to keep a matchbook or two stashed around, for candles/oil lamp/stove cooking in an outage.
With our gas stove at least, in a power outage while the burners can be lit manually and used, since the digital controls are not powered, our oven won’t work.
YMMV

Agreed-that’s my plan. I’ve already told them (the indulgent slug a bed adults) that this sensible grandma will be leaving if the snow or ice starts up again. My phone will warn me. ahead of that. I checked the city traffic cams before I left my house. It’s only 5 miles, 90+% of which is major city arterial, at most 5 blocks total of minor unplowed streets at either end. In fact, I followed a city plow most of the way here.
That’s what I thought I said. Match, light burner.
I still miss having a gas stove like that.
Growing up in the Midwest gas is all I ever cooked on-I’d be hard pressed to learn electric stoves at this point.
My sister got an electric cooktop after having gas for 50 years, she pretty much hates it. Slow to heat up, tricky to fine adjust and a beast to keep clean as she has found out. I understand that induction cooktops are more user-friendly.
BBBoo - yay for impending baby! Here’s hoping all is uneventful between now and Mar 21! But, alas, that boy won’t have a matching playmate like Roxy and Tobias do. I have reached my grandmother limit. Daughter wanted one of each and that’s what she’s got and that’s that.
I envy those who have gas stoves. That’s what I grew up using, and for a brief time in college, I was in an apartment that had gas, but mostly, I’ve been stuck with electric. I’ve adapted, but not without complaint.
OTOH, electric ovens seem to operate the same as gas, so there’s that. And the cherry cobbler I just pulled out is yummerrific!! It’s merely sheer self-control that’s keeping me from inhaling the whole panfull!
FCD just wanted cuke salad for supper, and I had leftover meatloaf, rice, and veggies before the cobbler. Time to read again!
Waves at everyone. I’m sorry for checking out without saying anything, I realized that being online all the time was making me really crabby, so I shut my comp off. Now that I have gone long enough to detox, I will let myself have a bit of online time but if I start feeling crabby again…I will say something first.
I woke up to snow warnings and eagerly anticipated the white beauty. It didn’t start snowing until almost 11 but snow has been falling every since. There are even snowplows driving up and down the highway.
Right after taking that pic, I walked down the driveway just to hear my feet crunch in the snow. Delightful!
The fuzzbutts have been staying warm…and have almost out grown that tree. I have one with a wider crows nest but I am not allowed to move kitty furniture lest they boycott everything in my room and move to their furniture in a different room.
Glad to see you!
Jolene,
Jolene
. The only rescue kitten I know with a $3000 mattress…or is GG an electric blanket? Hard to say which one looks more blissed out there.
Forecast update - by this time tomorrow, we could have 8" of the evil white stuff on the ground. Schools will be closed tomorrow. For the record, I am not amused.
So here’s the class, Imma make my own little bowl!
This is an oops post, but it is an interesting link anyhow.
Thanks to swampy and all who clued me in. I usually pronounce them (term for lady of dubious virtue + durves).
BBBoo, sounds sensible, but be careful out there, lots of folks ain’t than sensible… And conga-rats on the impending new child for you to spoil.
Never had a gas stove if I remember correctly, always electric.
JtC, welcome back and know that we do worry about you…because we care. But take the time you need when you need it. We’ll be here. And lovely pics of the felines.
FMC, hunker down and get another book ready, sounds like you won’t be going anywhere tomorrow.
And back from the gym, had a sammich and way to much Diet Pepsi (will be up tonight emptying my bladder) so just relaxing and internetting. And you can do puzzles while pedaling a stationary bike…you just can’t do them very well… Rain is due about 9-10pm so not going out until tomorrow. Need to get the laundry organized for Laundry Day tomorrow, but that can wait until bedtime is closer.
Yake care all and I’ll catch you on the next MMP.
Penny’s dad did bring a cupcake for me with a candle.
I don’t wear full makeup very often either. I do replace anything opened every six month though so’s i don’t smear bacteria all over my face, especially around the eyes.
I hope that Charm warms up well, shoe.
Yes. Once it’s opened and used, there is bacteria in it that doesn’t age well. Especially important for eye makeup.
Good lord! Was she related to my cousin? (mom at 15, grandmother at 29, great grandmother at 44. She’s 2 years younger than I am and if her great granddaughter follows the family tradition, she’ll be a great great grandmother by the time she’s eligible for social security)
I allow myself one Nutty Buddy when I go on a road trip. They aren’t allowed in my apartment.
Glad to have you back and OK JtC.
We both ate off the Salvadoran side of the menu today, except for dessert, which were some divine coffee cannoli. We split chicken empanadas for the starter and a pork pupusa. I had chuleta de cerdo and he had bistec encebllado. I’s stuffed.
Both Dad and Sis called and we talked a while, so that was a good visit.
I finished up a project in the studio this morning using some new geometrical dies and a buncha paper scraps to make some quilted cards and scrapbook ephemera.
Now, I’m hunkered down, listening to the wind blow.
Packers somehow managed to lose to the Bears. In Lambeau. At least the hockey game is improving.
Yes. We worry.
GG. Because every Costello needs an Abbott.
Thanks to all who answered my “does makeup expire” question…sounds like I need to do some cosmetics shoppin’!
The forecasted snow total has been bumped up here as well: the National Weather Service is now calling for 8-12”, but the Washington Post is sticking with 6-10” for most areas. I guess we’ll see what the new MMP brings.
WifeBFF was up for lunch; yay! She placed a to-go order for burgers at a place we all like, and I picked them up on my way to their place. Everyone loved their Christmas presents (including me: I got gift cards for Lego and my favorite clothing store), and I went home with a tin full of homemade cookies. She reminded me that we have tentative lunch plans for this coming Saturday, because I’ll be giving blood at a place near their house. I might get to see them twice in one week.
I’d been holding off on ordering my next Lego set — the Pac-Man arcade game — in case I got a gift card from my BFFs, and as soon as I got home I went to Lego.com and ordered it. BUT, I’d forgotten that using PayPal skips the option for using a gift card: on that site, if I want to use a gift card I have to use a credit card for the balance. Oh well. It’s not like there will never be another set I want.
Indeed!
I love those, too (and their Hostess counterpart, Ho-Hos). In fact, a box of them temporaily found its way into my cart yesterday: somehow I scrounged up the internal fortitude to put them back!
D’OH! My gas oven has digital controls, too…excellent, excellent point. Oh well. I guess I’d be left with just the burners. I figure I have 8-10 meals that I could heat up that way; I’d survive. I’ll still be crossing my fingers that the power never goes out/doesn’t go out for very long.
I think Trieste simply didn’t quote correctly; it seemed verbatim to me.
I think everyone’s worry was compounded by the fact that shortly before your break there was some concern about your hubby’s health. It’s really good to know that all is well in Casa de Cane.
I think I once felt invisible; I do now, and didn’t post for days. I wondered how long I could do so without it being noticed. I’m guessing a month at least.
We’d worry. Especially with that thing with the possibly closed business affecting your rent.
May I suggest different laundry baskets? We have 4. One for things that should be bleached, one for normal stuff, one for towels and one for stoopid picky shit that has to be dealt with special. Like my bathing suit and his compression socks. His prescription socks cost fifty bucks a pair and have to be replaced every six months, plus are right and left. You best believe I don’t put them in the dryer!!!
Thank you and happy cake day. It sounds like you had a fun birthday, I’m kinda jealous about your coffee cannoli!
And it is ungracious of me to be so thoughtless. I do feel badly about that and promise that it won’t happen again.
Honestly, his health is what caused my break. Of course I’ve spent enough time with Dr Google to scare myself to death, but his anti-vax/doctors are only out to make money attitude didn’t happen in a vacuum, he was raised in that ignorance and I kept getting links from his family telling me that all I had to do was feed him this or that to cure everything while spending all day every day on my knees praying and I was afraid that I would publicly flame out if I didn’t run away and hid under my bed for a while. (Of course that didn’t happen, we have a waterbed and I’m much too old/fat to crawl behind the pedestal anymore. I just spent my time stitching and playing with cats.)
I was just outside again, the cold feels different here than back in AZ. Its not as bitter is the best way I can put it. The snow is really falling and all of my footprints have filled up with snow. I thought I should maybe do something about the ramp in front of my french doors and swept it clear half an hour ago which was a total waste of time.
I wonder if maybe we should get a snow shovel and ask Harry who plows his driveway. According to everything folks have told me, it won’t be needed, but I do like to plan ahead.
You know one can stitch using cat fur…
