I was just thinking the other day about when we were kids and the seasons changed - Mom would break out the suitcases - that’s where we stored off-season clothing since we didn’t travel much. It was always a bit exciting to see what still fit and what got handed down.
But since I’ve been on my own, I’ve never packed up clothes seasonally. In fact, except for shorts and a couple of tank tops, I pretty much wear everything year round. It’s the outerwear that changes and there’s always room in the closet for light and heavy jackets. I expect it would be lots different if I lived in a smaller house with 5 kids… So Mom did what she had to do.
How do you cook the pumpkin? I tried baking it once and it stayed hard. And it was an edible pumpkin, not a jack-o-lantern pumpkin. So I just use canned. As it happens, I have enough in the pantry for 4 pies, but only enough crusts for 2 (I don’t make my own - I buy the rolled-up kind or the frozen-in-the-pan.) Oh, and whipped cream or cool-whip - must have toppings!
The pet stroller pics reminded me of something else I saw at the boat show - floating ramps for dogs! Several variations on this. Plus doggy life jacket/harness combos. Not that we’d ever take Higgs on the boat - pugs aren’t exactly swimmers, and frankly, I think she’d hate it.
53° here when I let Higgs out a few minutes ago. Forecast high is 76°, and by the end of the week, highs will be in the 60s and lows in the 40s. I may have to break out the electric blanket soon - or close the bedroom windows. Decisions, decisions…
My big plan for the day is mowage. It’s finally dried out enough that John Deere won’t get bogged down. I hope I have enough gas - we shall see. First, I’ll need to get the large branches off the lawn. I can chop up the little ones, but there’s some serious future firewood in the way.
We also need to open up the dining table, since Daughter and her crew are coming to supper tomorrow. The current tablecloth needs to be laundered and I figure we may as well get ready for the invasion a day early.
This is me too. Blue Jeans and shirts work in every season, and with my time in the gym having sports-like clothing out in the winter isn’t too odd.
shoe, glad you had a good (well, at least a less tenser time than you feared) down in Texas and enjoyed the expanded tale. I looked at parking costs for my local airport, economy is $9/day, the deck is $13 and daily parking is $25 a day. Sorry about the rotten onions.
Cupcakes, you probably put more effort in your kitchen food-making yesterday than I do in a month, but I bet it’s al; delicious.
rocky, don’t have any pets to transport but have to admit those strollers look nice. I do have a collapsible wagon for hauling soccer stuff from my car to the fields that has served me well.
Dicey, I’ve killed several string trimmers in the past year, I really should get another one, just wish they made it fool-proof becasue when in comes to lawn equipment…
swampy, happy Chalicing. And yeah, I hardly watch college football anymore what with all the changes in conferences and the movement of players hither and fro.
Up at 6:30am, need to put on some clothing and make a NY Times Paper run, then sloth until it’s dinner time (Metro Diner meatloaf). Then sweat in the gym instead of sweat at home (heading from 60F now to 88 later today).
I might have mentioned this before, our next door neighbor has… issues after having fallen off of his roof, but he likes to keep busy and he loves mowing our yard. Now they’ve decide to start in-depth work on removing the vines crawling on the house, cutting down stray little trees that have popped up, etc. It’s so very nice of them to do it (his wife is helping as well), but it ‘s also kind of disconcerting. I mean, do we pay them? Give them direction? IDK. For now all we’ve done is give them gift cards as a thank you gift.
Hooray!
Oh no, that’s no fun at all!
Yikes! Glad to hear you made it there and back safely.
The shower went ok. I was kind of miserable by the time we got home last night, but at least I was able to stay for the whole event. Everyone played nice and, frankly, all were in agreement about the naysayer and how much they dislike her lack of kindness. Most important to me was that MusicMan had a good time at an event with his family!
Today will be? I don’t know yet. Annie and I have been sitting here for awhile trying not to make any noise.
Since you tend to go to the same places to eat on a regular basis, do you sit at the same table each time? Have the same server? Find your beverage waiting for you?
Eons ago, we used to get breakfast at the same place and request the same server. She always came out with our Diet Cokes without us asking. But recent changes in our lifestyle mean we haven’t been out for breakfast in ages (except the other day on the way to the boat show.) I wonder if Lisa remembers us??
Parking at BWI runs from $11/day for long term to $30/day for the garage right next to the terminal, and $6 for park-n-ride at local lots. At Reagan National, it runs from $19/day to $29/day, with park-n-ride from hotels as low as $9/day.
And, FWIW, parking at the cruise terminal is $15/day, but it is a fenced in lot, so I guess it’s secure. I’m not aware of park-n-ride options when you’re going on a cruise, other than my sister. She lives about 5 minutes away, so we leave our car at her house and give her a few bucks for gas and her inconvenience.
Weird awakening for MIL. I heard her going into the fridge, getting a diet coke. I asked if she wanted toast, and she said she had a sandwich that she’d made. Apparently she dreamed that. She also was again confused about the time, talking about lunch at 8 in the morning. But she’s had her meds and I made her some toast and fetched her robe.
Obviously, the nurses were wrong when they told us “any day now” or “within a couple of weeks” - I don’t blame them because you just can’t know for sure. But it’s emotionally trying when you brace yourself for a couple more days or weeks, then that time passes and life goes on. It was late August when we were told “any day now” - I know it’s wearing on FCD.
Afternoon, mumpers! It’s currently 12c/53f with a predicted high of 13c/56f and cloudy. Weather app says “It’s fucking cloudy and the sun gives zero fucks. Like, literally fucking zero.” Seems to be true, it’s grey and gloomy out there with a few spots of rain. Fortunately I have zero plans for anything outside the house.
No - we’re all part of the UK so we can travel across those borders without any documentation. That might all change if Scotland successfully votes for independence though
That does sound like a tale - hope the move into your new place goes smoothly!
I hope she feels better soon, perhaps she will work out that the pills aren’t that bad, and they’re making her feel more comfortable.
JtC glad you found a dispensary that does stuff to suit you!
shoe welcome home, hopefully Monkey will forgive you for your absence and the fact he could see the bottom of his food bowl.
metalmouse I hope the AC fix isn’t too costly, good thing you have the overhead fans as well.
Nothing exciting in my day today - we had a quiet Saturday night at home watching films, I was up reasonably early to tend to the cats, and I have no other plans for today aside from some serious slothage!
Does he like it any better when it’s right side up?
… said everyone leaving a dispo with their little paper bag in hand …
… said 3x over by everyone, about an hour later …
… thus ensuring you get a weird warm spell in a few days.
What, 'fraid of bears?
Actually …
… think my fave was a woman who absolutely fit in, she was seated nearby, and dancing in & around her seat, having a great time and smiling & waving, poofy white thing clipped in her hair, makeup all done.
She looked awesome.
I eventually realized she was wearing a poofy white ballerina tu-tu (with white shorts under), a giant snazzy bedazzled belt, lotsa costume jewelry … and a white tank top a.k.a. wife beater. And white sneakers.
She must’ve been so comfortable compared to some of us trotting around in 4" heels and push-up (or no) bras.
No wonder she seemed so damn happy.
Or maybe it was the champagne …
A lot of people at the white non-wedding had wagons.
My mom asked me, why do people have those?
I was like, other than this event, for which you own a dedicated wheeled cooler?
Um, people who walk to/from grocery store? People who have lotsa kids?
… I could’ve added your kind to the ^^ list.
They’re helping (or “helping” depending on what they remove, or clip, or kill …) but it’s still not their property.
If they accidentally cut a power line or chopnoff your cable, you may have a different opinion than how you currently feel.
If she brought your drinks without even being asked, I guaran-damn-tee at some point she idly wondered, "Hey, I haven’t seen “Diet Cokes” in a while … huh … "
A dying blind woman starving constantly, being a few hours off the current time, just doesn’t seem like a big deal to me.
She wants lunch, give her lunch. { shrug } Who cares what time it might be?
Pretend you’re in Indonesia and she’s got jet lag.
Hon, I know you’re tired of this nonsense. Is there no facility where she can stay, get her meds on time, where there are nurses on-staff to bathe/monitor her?
Your home is not an end-of-life care facility.
His chin is glued to my kneecap right now, and an attempt to shift his butt off my guts resulted in a tiny tail-twitch and quite the “yeah, imma not moving” hunker down (how can 10 lb of cat weigh so damn much??) so I suppose all is well in Monkey-World.
Not really, my Sunday Dinner routine has 7 different places, plus one Sunday designated as “rat’s choice”, where I go wherever I want to. So most of the places only see me once every couple of months, if that. Only ‘regular’ place is my Jersey Mike’s Monday sub, and the crew there (if they stay more than 2 months), knows what I get and starts preparing it when I enter the door.
And {{{FCM}}}} for all you’re going through.
Sunday Paper has been acquired (I finally finished last week’s yesterday) and morning banane eaten to break fast, now some internettin’ for a couple hours before heading off to dinner. I reset the breakers for the HVAC, we’ll see if that helped in a bit (still only 68F outside so not needing it yet).
Actually, she didn’t want anything. Then a few minutes later, she asked for rye toast. I’ll give her anything she wants if she asks - the woman barely ingests 500 calories a day.
She made it absolutely clear that she doesn’t want to go into any kind of facility. And she can’t afford one anyway, plus there are no such places around here - it’s a rural county. So our home is, in fact, and end of life care facility. And no way FCD would take her anywhere to die.
OK, I’m showered and dressed and in a little bit, I’ll go fill the gas cans then commence mowage. Lucky me.
Living in the same climate zone, I find that layering is what most of us tend to do.
Which is exactly why she would need a life jacket on a boat. While he gets an annual swim test in the kiddie pool at pup swim, Nelson doesn’t exactly have a natural bent for swimming
Up, caffeinating, breakfasted and fixing to do KP. Not a lot on the slate today.
Ursala says thanks for the well wishes. She doesn’t act sick. I took her to the vet because twice when she wee weed, it arced outside the box. Her body was in the box, but she emitted a jet stream. Anyway, I got the pill into her again this morning followed by a few Temptation treatos. And she doesn’t hate me!
Went to a charity luncheon yesterday and realized that I had to wear clothes that weren’t gym or barn clothes.
I’m glad you had fun and made good memories with your mother. Also happy that all was good at the home front and they made sure you knew how much they needed you!
I did that once. It was very good. I am very lazy so I will probably not do it again. I’ll bet yours is wonderful.
Look for it next week, the shelves will be bulging, LOL!!!
I should probably be thinking about that now that I live somewhere with seasons.
You certainly did have a productive day, I got tired just thinking about it!
Now I want an Arby’s fish samwich.
The produce sto lady said she would try to bring back some poblano and jalapeno peppers for me on her next trip cause I seriously miss good pico.
I’m sure that all of us have felt that way at one time or another!
He sounds so much like Harry the Forest Fighter. The only way to keep him out of our yard is to keep ahead of him. I do encourage Harry to stop over for a cup of coffee or glass of sweet tea as he has time because that’s when he will “warn” us about kudzu on the back fence or volunteer trees behind the shed.
I agree that it is very nice to get help but yeah, what is expected on our end.
Life is a party today, so make the most of it! Your great energy should put others at ease, and you are definitely taking the situation well in hand.
The Spousal Unit just told me we’re not going to church today.
A while back I got over five pounds of beef ribs from the Buy It Before It Rots bin at the supermarket. They were originally $42, but they were marked down to half-price. I put some beef rub on them (I don’t remember what-all I put in it – I keep it in a mason jar in the cupboard), and they’re in a 250ºF oven. I put them in at 0630. I’ll check them in about 1230.

Happy Sunday, all!
Friday wasn’t particularly busy, but my MMP time was cut short because Bailey had a 4pm vet appointment and I decided to log off work early (vs working more afterwards). It was her annual wellness exam + shots. She’s mostly fine, except that she should weigh 40-45 pounds (at her healthiest she weighed close to 50) and the vet’s scale said 35: last year her weight was in the upper 30s and the vet said she still looked fine, but this time when I asked if she looked underweight the vet didn’t hesitate before saying “yes.” Her eating has become less and less regular, and it’s really showing. The vet thinks the reduced appetite is a sign of pain. Bailey stopped tolerating gabapentin in August, and when we tried Librela a year ago I didn’t see any difference after 3 months (plus it required monthly car rides, which are no longer fun at all for the doggy), so the vet recommended that we try upping her predisone dosage: she’s been on a low dose for years due to having atypical Addison’s Disease, and increasing it (gradually; from 1mg every other day to 1mg with each meal) could provide inflammation relief and appetite stimulation. It’s been hard to medicate her with any regularity because her eating is so erratic, but I just realized – as I was typing this – that 1mg of crushed prednisone isn’t much powder at all and could likely be hidden in her favorite treat. Worst case I’ll try the Librela again, but the vet said there’s plenty of room to increase her prednisone dosage even more (2mg/day is nowhere near the max) if we want to do that first. I so don’t want my girl to be in pain; I really wish she could tell me when she’s hurting vs just feeling a little stiff. I’ll just keep doing my best to guess/help her.
Yesterday was busier than a typical Saturday, but not bad at all. In the morning I paid bills and did some personal record-keeping stuff, then at noon I went to the gym for a personal training session. I told my trainer about my decision to stop training entirely: turns out I need to notify the gym via email, and it won’t be effective for 30 days (I’ll send that email/get that ball rolling tomorrow). When I got home I took Bailey for a walk and then took a shower, and wound up having ~45 minutes to eat lunch and watch a little TV before it was time to go to CVS for two shots. When I got back from that I had about an hour to kill before I headed to my BFFs’ for dinner with them and their 23-year-old son (my “nephew”): grilled steak, corn, and roasted potatoes…and homemade chocolate chip cookies. It was a great dinner/visit, and I got home around 9pm. With some cookies. They carve pumpkins for Halloween every year, and I join them when I can; I’m hoping to see them again for that in 2-3 weeks (as long as Wife BFF is feeling alright).
I got COVID and flu vaccinations last month, but yesterday I got a Tdap booster (in my right arm) and a shingles vax (Shingrix; in my left arm). The first time I tried to get Shingrix, in 2022, the pharmacy said that insurance wouldn’t cover it; my doc said I could wait. I recently decided it was time to get that whether I had to pay for it or not, and luckily something changed in the past couple of years and I had no co-pay yesterday (). The Tdap arm didn’t become sore at all until today; the Shingrix arm started feeling sore about two hours after the shot. It was sore enough to be a bit distracting, but Tylenol helped. Shingrix is a two-shot thing, so I’ll get the second one in mid-January (I scheduled the appointment yesterday); then I’ll finally be all caught up on my vaccinations.
Luckily, today I have no ill effects from either shot other than some sorness in each arm…but my legs and shoulders are also sore from yesterday’s workout, so whenever I move I’m kind of one big ache. Heh. I don’t feel bad, though, and at 12:30 I’ll head to Maryland for a late lunch with my dad and brother: we get together for birthdays, Father’s Day, and Christmas, and today is 2 weeks after my birthday and 1 week before Dad’s. There’s a casual restaurant near BWI airport that’s convienient to each of us and we all like, and it’s become our default meeting spot. I took more Tylenol this morning, and there’s some in my purse for later.
Sometimes you gotta do what ya gotta do! Did I miss the report…?
(I went to college near Philly: Pat’s vs Geno’s was an eternal debate!)
(My bathroom sink: the kitchen and bathroom were remodeled in 2014, right before I moved in.)
I knew about Lowe’s, Home Depot, and PetSmart, but didn’t know that dogs are allowed in Target! Good to note!
Back when I used to (a) work in an office and (b) eat instant oatmeal pretty regularly, I loved the break room’s hot water dispenser.
My company lets us roll over up to 400 hours each year. That’s 10 weeks…I can’t imagine ever accruing that much!
Meh. When does he leave?
An old Doctor Who crossover show, Torchwood, was set in Wales, and there was one scene where a Welsh character was on the phone with her fiance while driving to England: when she mentioned that she was about to cross the bridge, there was a “yes, I’ve had my shots” joke. I found that character to be generally quite annoying, but that was one of my favorite moments of hers.
I hope you start the downhill run soon!
I often love it when that happens: I tend to enjoy slightly gooey centers of things (when it’s not a lava cake, etc.). When I make whomp crossaints, I often deliberately underbake them.
Whew…and welcome home!
I won’t ask, but will just say that I hope the “Mom” of it all wasn’t as bad as you’d feared.
But since she’ll never be on the boat, that’s not an issue! Considering how much she hates riding in the car, I can just imagine how she’d react to the rather loud diesel engine, the strange smells, and the lack of potty stops on demand. She can stay with her cousin Trevor when we go out.
Just call it Used Meat - less to type!
In Linthicum? That’s where one of my sisters lives. I know nothing about the restaurants there, tho.
Mowage of the front and back yards is done. I’ll attack the side strip later. FCD just got back from the marina and he stopped for gas for the mower, so yay! Time for a little chillage now.
