The Health Fair was nice. Small packets of protein powder this year, unlike last years big containers.
A brownie that filled me up.
Thrn I went to the library and got
2025 farmers almanac, Dr. Disasters Guide to surviving anything, The Puppeteers by a Jason Chaffetz, and All in the Family by a Fred Trump, Don’s nephew.
I’m exhausted. My knees are aching. I’m sore. But I got the old canopy and walls off of the canopy garage, I got the roof up (by myself, and it’s a 20x10 garage), and I got the sides up. I hit the wall though, and I simply could not do any more today. I’ll put the ends up tomorrow.
Mrs. L.A. got me a 20-ounce Monster Zero Ultra. I need it. Then I’ll have another shower and heat up that leftover burger patty with bacon for dinner.
For all that we’ve been boat people for the 40 years we’ve been together, there’s no way we’d be spending that kind of money, not that we ever had that much anyway. Oh, and each of those engines burns 75 gallons of fuel an hour. That 225 gallons at $3.50-ish or more depending on the marina where you fill up. That’s around $787 per hour just for fuel. We’ve never spend that much in an entire summer - ever! In fact, probably not in 3 summers, because diesels don’t burn nearly that much. I think our current boat burns around 2 gallons an hour. Of course we also travel at about 6-7 MPH and that boat goes just a bit faster…
Temps are supposed to drop to the low 50s here tonight - I think I’ll be closing windows a bit. There’s cool then there’s cold. But we’ve got tons of afghans, so yay for that! Not much longer till I pull out the electric blanket, I guess. Or we’ll get another heat wave, just because. I won’t place bets either way. But I am glad we have our pellets in the garage.
Evening all. A large helping of Fettuccine Alfredo is being assimilated in my belly as I type, Referee game #2 went well, got some more exercise and outdoor time, but am home now and ready to do some evening slothing. Temperature is back down to 75F so the AC is not needed, which makes my electric company sad (but me happy).
Cupcakes, fascinating story. I’ve put in my will that I am to be cremated and my remains spread over my parents grave, haven’t gone as far as planning it out as you have, but might look into that, since there is a fair chance of me outliving my brother and Sis-in-Law while their kids, while we get along fine, are not real close.
Spot and I have spent the day on the couch, watching Kollege Handegg and drinking gin&tonics. I’m waiting for the N.C. State game to start. For the first time in years they’ll actually televise the Week 2 game, but I’m still holding onto my irrational hatred of Incarnate Word(Go South Dakota State!).
Sounds like a good time, boofae, and looks like good brews.
Not planning would be a grave error.
You could run 3-4 Cessna 182s at once for that. Or have a good night on the Vegas Strip.
Well at least water fell somewhere. We were hoping for rain, but it didn’t happen. I’m glad you had a good evening.
And isn’t that just a fun experience. At least the guy who hit you had insurance, that wasn’t the case in the last two accidents Hubs was in.
I bought canned raviolis last time I was in Idaho cause mom used to serve them to us. Mom and I each took a bite off our plate…before choosing to have pizza instead. Very ICK!
The chicken was good. It wasn’t as great as it was when I was eating it with Dad, but that’s to be expected.
Ding Dongs are also pretty nasty nowadays.
How great that MIL is able to go out and you and FCD can have some time to yourselves. You sure do deserve it.
Add some tomato juice next time, it will help as well.
Bad dog! No hurt yourself!
This soon will pass.
That’s his worry. I have full confidence that licensed and insured contractors aren’t going to riffle through my under ware drawer…and if they do, they deserve everything they see.
Hubs can handle it and I will loll.
I love reading about your pubbing and travels and I’m glad you had a good time.
I hope nothing got missed and that you have a great time.
Retirement is magical. You are going to love it. How many days left?
How very cool! Happy sniffles are good any time of the day, but morning ones just cheer me up all day.
That must have been an interesting moment. It is good that you are able to make plans now so that others won’t have to deal with it while they are grieving. I’m sorry about your sister.
I’m sure you will have too many unprofessional to leave room for the paid ones. If I’m still around, I’ll be sure to come and rend my garments while wailing and ripping hair.
This is what you can get in the Lakes for that money. The housing market is horrible.
I understand there are now 19 of them going up. No garage, no landscaping, just a bare lot and a dinky house 45 minutes away from the closest grocery store. Insane.
We have continued to be the best RDOS that we can. It stayed under 75 today and if we only had windows that opened and had screens, all of them would have been open. Soon.
Hubs saw some deer by our back fence so found Jolene and put her on the bedroom nightstand so she could see them. She thought that he wanted to play and he couldn’t get her to look out the window. (D’uh. She’s a cat, that never works!) GG was hanging out on the dining room tree so he saw them and got excited. Jolene heard GG going off and came out to see what he was getting, then saw the deer for herself.
It was most exciting. At least they were behind the house and not in front where they might try to cross the street and get hit. We’ve already seen one body (and picked up car parts) there, I’d rather it not happen again.
Din was scotch eggs with mustard sauce, chips and asparagus.
I made a cheese cake for desert and was planning on topping it with cherries and drizzled chocolate, but hub just wanted boring ol’ whipped cream. @Baker was kind enough to send me some Whip It a few years back and I’ve gotten into the habit of always keeping some on hand.
I piped the Devils Tower and got all picky about the ridges on the sides of the mountain.
He didn’t get it. He thought that I had over whipped the cream (which is how you make butter) and it was too stiff to spread. He still lives.
If I’m understanding correctly, the agent from our company (USAA) has already been able to verify that the other driver does in fact have active insurance, so we won’t get hit for the $500 deductible on our uninsured driver coverage. I’ll admit to being worried about that, since a photo DH sent of the other guy’s insurance card seemed to show an expiration date in the past.
They’re now working on the problem of estimates and when they’ll have parts available so the Jeep can go in to have that rear parking sensor and tow hook fixed (I think she said we’re probably looking at a full bumper replacement. Ugh.)
I’d have sided with you on that one. In fact, you’ve just described my favorite Cold Stone concoction - cheesecake base, with fudge syrup and cherry pie filling as mix-ins.
The latest bizarro trip from MIL’s brain: she doesn’t think either of her two widowed neighbors in Ocala have wills and she’s worried about what will happen to their estates. Why? Dunno. But it’s got her all in a tizzy.
Two of my friends from high school are unmarried and childless - it would never have occurred to me to wonder about what would happen when they die. Now I feel like I have to ask them. Dammit…
I’m not as good as I should be about my insurance cards. I know I should pitch the old ones, I’m lazy so I just toss the new on top on the pile in my glove box. I might not grab the right one while being stressed about hitting someone, so I do understand how that could have happened.
I hope the parts arrive sooner than later. I also hope that new parts won’t be needed after they pull the bumper off because that would cause delays.
Hopefully a rental will happen.
Thank you. We haven’t had Fettuccine Alfredo shrimp for a while, so I kinda forgot about it. I’ll make some next week. With store bought parm because the stuff I brought with me is only good for putting in stews now. And not even that to be honest.
Much floozyness happens in pubs…
And yes, vodka always helps!
They are simple to make and are honestly something I make when I’ve run out of ideas about what to make. We each eat one for dinner and hubs eats the other two for breakfasts. What can I say? I’m lazy.
Jolene just chased slo-motion GG into the kitchen and tackled him. I love watching them play, he is so gentle with her and if she doesn’t like what is going on, she tells him and he backs off and waits for her to pounce him again.
They seem a bit time-consuming. First you have to boil the eggs, then you have to let them cool a bit and peel them, then you have to divvy up the sausage and smash it out, then you have to wrap the sausage evenly around the eggs, then you have to do the egg wash and seasoned flour, then you have to fry them in oil… At least I’m not adverse to packet brown gravy. I love Scotch eggs, but I haven’t made them because everything else is easier to make.
The previous congregation I was had a file cabinet for funeral plans. I remember the rector saying, “Oh, I wish more people would do this” My mom had everything set up as well.
{ politely redefines “simple” and then falls over … politely }
"Simple to make." My scrawny old ass they are.
Had one of those “small town lakeshore” moments tonight, after work.
After two closing shifts in a row some thought, I decided to run down to the corner sto’ for some liquid soothing.
Mind you, the 'hood where I live isn’t fancy. By which I mean, the motel closest to me features lovely individuals seems like an efficient way to procure bedbugs.
But tonight, for the 1st time in the, what four years I’ve been here, there appeared to be an honest to god FOOD TRUCK with their generator running, and an “OPEN” sign blinking, yummy-smelling smoke from a grill and all that … in the parking lot of Crackhead Motel.
I’m driving by, windows rolled down cuz Led Zep was playin’ in the cool autumn breeze, and I smelled … WTF YUM.
Chatted with the old guy running the joint long enough to gather that he most certainly had his shit together, and purchased y’all the most delicious cheeseburger I’ve had in a hot minute.
After I brought it home and inhaled it shamelessly daintily ate the whole f’ing thing, you have to understand what an honor it was to him, that I put pants back on just to drive back out there, and playfully holler…
“HEEEYY!! YOU SOLD ME THAT CHEESEBURGER? NO MUSTARD??”
{ slightly sheepish voice } " … yes, ma’am?"
“I want you to know … that was the best burger I’ve had in a long time, and I hope you come back on here again!”
ETA: we shot the shit for a minute and I gather he understood I was just playing around (pretending to be all mad when I rolled up) and I truly, genuinely hope he - and hell, more - show up 'round here again.
That sounds promising. It’s nice that the weather allows you to indulge your passion.
Many years ago I went with my grandmother to see the bench which was installed as a gravestone for my grandparents. My grandfather was already there, and all of her information was already there. She was a very practical woman, and it was cheaper to do it that way. When her time came, she was cremated, as it was also easier for the internment.
Your gravestone sounds lovely. Losing your sister unexpectedly was certainly a shock, and it sounds like you’re making sure that you get everything planned ahead.
A cheeseburger worthy of putting pants on. That must’ve been good.
Unexpected food trucks with good food are wonderful.
ETA
My sore throat from yesterday is still here, and seems to be due to post-nasal drip. Took some mucus-thinning meds, so hopefully it won’t get too bad.
Going to go back that chocolate cake. Might do a cinnamon cake later. And have to trim the other rose bush, that’s growing a lot, but won’t have enough warm weather to make flowers, so it needs trimming.
Good Mornin’ Y’all! Up and caffeinatin’. YAWN ‘Tis 72 Amurrkin out and cloudy with a predicted high of 77 with light rain late mornin’ through early evenin’. We shall see. The big item on today’s agenda is deheathenization wherein I have Verger duty. Then it will be back to da cave for a sammich N.O.L., nappage, day drinkin’, and other RDOS inactivities. I have chikin strips marinatin’ which shall get grilled for sup and et along with sallit and cheesey garlic bread.
Now I need more caffeine and to feed rumbly tummy. Then, purtification for deheathenization shall commence.
Sheer genius! Of course, the main issue is getting people to plan. It’s almost as if some people think a plan is a curse or something - once it’s all arranged, it’ll happen now. Or something. I dunno. We’ve told our daughter our plans, but I should probably write something down for reference. Yeah, I’ll get to that.
We didn’t have a will till a few years ago. Nor did we ever designate anyone to take care of our daughter, just in case. Denial is powerful. I know at least one of my sisters has a will, and I’d bet big money that my brother does - not sure about the other 2 sisters.
Naturally, I read that as liquid shooting. Super Soakers at 20 paces!
Back when I was on grand jury duty, a number of cases that came up took place at the A&E motel, a rather skeevy place near the base. Mainly fights and sometimes shootings. Luckily, it’s not really close to me - maybe 20 miles. That’s all - just felt the urge to share a memory.
When I was in college, the halfway point between the school and my parents’ house was in Wheeling, where one aunt lived, so it was a convenient place to stop for the night. One time she took me to the cemetery where she and Uncle Bud had their lots. She said they chose it for the view - um, they wouldn’t be in any shape to enjoy the view… Yeah, I know, she was talking about for the rest of the family, what little is left in the area.
It was mid-50s when I got up. We’re promised a high of 72°. I’d say this is a perfect day to make bean soup for supper, so I shall. That’s the extent of today’s plans. FCD may take his mother to church - she had a very busy day yesterday, so she may not wake up in time. Oh, and I neglected to clean the critter fountain, so that’s on the agenda today, too. As for the rest of the day, I’ll wing it. I’m guessing some handegg will be on the TV.
Feel free! I have passed on a few other British-isms here over the years that other people have adopted
I had a recipe a while ago for tomato soup cake that did indeed require a tin of tomato soup. I made the cake, friends were very sceptical about trying it but they did and it was pronounced very tasty. I also put beetroot in chocolate cake, gives it a fabulous colour and definitely improves the depth of the chocolate flavour.
That’s the important bit, I’m glad you got to spend some time together without having to constantly keep eyes and ears open for MIL.
My mum was exactly the same, she didn’t want us (well, me, since my brother is a useless lump of lard most of the time) to have to worry about her funeral arrangements. She had paid for the whole thing in advance, all I had to do was go to her chosen funeral directors and pick out the coffin, finishings and flowers that I wanted (brother didn’t get a say in that), and help them design the order of service. Made that task so much easier all round. I intend to do exactly the same thing for myself. It is every so slightly unsettling to go and see your own headstone though!
I fully expect you to have a full-blown Vegas showgirl-style cabaret procession!
Exactly! I would expect them to come in, get on with the work, and leave after they’ve cleaned up at the end of the job. I can’t imagine they’d get much joy rifling through my old-lady knickers either
Sounds like an expensive job, I’m glad they have established that the other driver has insurance so you’re not out of pocket over it. Fingers crossed that they can get it all fixed quickly for you.
We don’t get much in the way of food trucks over here so when we’re on your side of the Great Divide, they’re a novelty for us. On one of our trips around Arizona/Utah, we stayed at the Grand Staircase Inn, Cannonville - it had been quite a long day of driving for me so I was glad to have arrived, only to find that there was absolutely nowhere to eat in town. Except for the food truck in the car park, right across from our room. Best bbq I’ve had in a very long time, the guy running it said he turned up on Saturday evenings and stayed until he’d sold out of food. Apparently that doesn’t take very long so we were lucky to have turned up when we did!
Yesterday evening was a quiet one for us, stayed at home drinking cocktails and watching a couple of films which was very pleasant. Today I have no plans apart from making food for campus on Monday - bit of an odd week, we have a semi-mandatory event on Monday afternoon so I’m going in on a day I usually would work from home. Then I’m having two days at home, back to campus on Thursday for another slightly more mandatory all-day event, and a normal campus work day on Friday. Means I only need to plan food for two days, but they’re at opposite ends of the week. Might have to see what I’ve got in the freezer…
Fun and games out on our street at the moment though, a different kind of entertainment! After last weekend’s Great Power Outage, the guys from National Grid are still fixing the damage so the street is partially blocked off just down from us. They have dug up both sides of the road and pavements, so they’d left a central section open for pedestrian access. On Friday, some local idiot decided he was fed up with following the diversion and moved the traffic cones and barriers aside so then people started driving through, and over a 2ft wide trench in the road (they’d left a temporary cover over that bit for pedestrains/pushchairs etc). Part of the covering had been broken by the weight of vehicles going over it and someone must have reported it. Probably some drunken eejit from the Heritage Centre fell in it.
Anyroadup, the contractors came back yesterday and barriered the road off properly, leaving pedestrian access on one of the pavements instead. Good job done, everyone’s happy. There are still people driving right up to the barriers, and having to turn round again, to the amusement of people like me. Now the top end of the street is also closed off as it’s the local half-marathon today and the route comes through surrounding streets so traffic’s blocked until later this afternoon. I’ve been sitting here watching drivers come to the end of the street opposite us, turn left and drive past the big red “road ahead closed” sign, then have to turn round when they see the road really is closed, then drive to the other end (again, ignoring the same signs), realising that end is closed too, turning round and going back the way they came.
I know, little things please little minds, right? Back to drinking tea and impersonating a sloth!
