(Old) Be-Labor-ing a Point. An End of (Meteorological) Summer MMP

Do you have a hankering for fried green tomatoes or just looking for a way to use them up? I’ve eaten green tomato pie, green tomato jam and green tomato chutney, but there are other recipes out there.

We actually did get a little bit overnight, but we could use about a week or two of slow, steady, gentle rain.

Enjoy your day with FCD Moooooom!

Up, caffeinating, breakfasted and fixing to do KP / houseirk. I need to pick up some prescriptions today (they are supposed to be syncing them so’s I don’t have to swing by every weekend) and, since it’s a cool day, take the small beast to the dog park.

Stay safe and healthy y’all!

I know there are a few of us in the PNW…

The forecasted La Niña certainly has many winter weather enthusiasts across western Washington excited about this coming winter season, and with NOAA’s forecast of colder and wetter conditions, that excitement will only grow…

No. I’m not excited. $300 monthly propane bills, shovelling the walk, knocking the snow off of the canopy garage and canopy shed, that pipe that always freezes… (I hope the 250 W infrared lamp will thaw it out.)

Afternoon, mumpers! It’s currently 21c/69f with no predicted change, and mostly cloudy. Weather app has little to say about that, except “Fucking suck it, clouds!” Yes, it’s cloudy out there but hasn’t rained here yet.

The only reason I can think of from Hubs’ side is that he’d be concerned about security if one of you wasn’t on the premises while a bunch of unknown workmen are on site. There’s also a possibility that something might go wrong, or something be discovered while they are doing the installation that requires you to see it, or decide on a course of action. But that should still only require one of you to be there, the other one can be happily in a quiet motel room with the cats and still be at the end of a phone.

You’ll be pleased to know that we survived the trip to Brizzle, perhaps because our first stop was to visit the Left-Handed Giant!

Taters I hope the pups came through ok, and I’m glad to hear your son is getting better now. Don’t know what to say about your husband and Zoe, perhaps he gets sad when you talk about her too.

Sticky Buns appendages crossed that the new MRI works out well for you!

It’s been an interesting weekend so far. We were late leaving home yesterday and only just made it to the station in time for the train we’d planned to catch. It was packed from our statin through to Big City Station but it pretty much emptied out after that. We had four seats to ourselves, and the catering trolley came round so we got a very good cup of tea on the way to Bristol.

Arrived on time, walked less than 10 minutes to our accommodation and got checked in quickly. After a quick change of clothes, we went out to get some food but didn’t really know where we were going, so we decided to walk in the general direction of the gig venue. We found an independent brewery call the Left-Handed Giant so we stopped there for a drink. They did serve pizza but I pointed out to 'im indoors that their menu was 100% meat-free. He put it down right away!! After finishing our drinks, we walked on a bit further and found a very gothy pub called The Crown which was pretty empty but had some good real ales and also served food. Fortified with some fine ale from St Austell Brewery and brisket dip sandwiches, we headed on to the gig venue.

It’s a place we hadn’t been before, nice little place with two stages and a record store as well as a bar. We got a drink, watched the last half of the support act, then went outside for some air as it was quite hot in there. Got chatting to a couple of people we saw at a music festival near Manchester a few months ago so that was pleasant. Then we headed back in to see the main act as it was the launch party for their second CD. Great performance, and we hung around afterwards to chat with them for a bit. Will be seeing them again at another music festival at the end of September so that’ll be something to look forward to. They are already asking what songs people want them to play, and which ones off the new album are already favourites. Better get my vote in!

We dodged a mahooosive rain storm on the way out of the gig, nipped next door for a pint until the weather calmed down, then walked back to our hotel. We were up and out in time for the midday train back here, stopped off in town for lunch at the Good Chinese Place, and then got a cab home. Cats are fed, litter trays are done, and I plan to spend the rest of my weekend in high sloth mode.

I made fried green tomatoes a few years ago, and I liked them. Can’t say I really remember what they taste like. The main point is to use them up. Thanks for the link - I think I’m going to try the tomato spice cake, which also helps me use up some eggs and cream cheese before I go on vacation. And I think I’ll grill some with tomorrow’s hamburgers. Or I might roast them in the oven with balsamic. I’ve done it with red tomatoes, and I think it’ll work with green as well. Makes a simple, yummy sauce for pasta.

Ears are ringing from the shin-dig. Lots of good food and it was nice to see a lot of people that I don’t see on a daily basis. But it was loud. I think I’m also a bit hoarse from yelling so people could hear me.

It’s warm outside - 27°C / 80°F and sunny, plus we’re both a bit worn out from peopling. Not sure if we need anything to eat - just more water.

Taters, hope the pups behave. I can’t imagine keeping two dogs calm after recent surgery. But I guess that’s why the meds are necessary.

I still haven’t tried breakfast at a Wendy’s. But I just discovered that I can see their website and they have spicy chicken nuggets. Sounds yum!

Need to get ready to call the 'rents and get all the last-minute vacation planning done.

@scareyfaerie LOL I am borrowing your mahoosive adjective. And possibly the high sloth description. I love gigs n’beer.

@purplehorseshoe Wendy’s is the only local fast food establishment I go to these days. I’m going to have to try the square croissant - sounds yummy. At my location they have free “senior drinks”. So I can get a decent lunch for around five dollars.

@Taters I wish you well with your recovering pets. Can’t be easy keeping them calm.

I am off work Saturday so I need to catch up on all the daily chores of living. Can’t wait until I can retire.

I’m on call Sunday so who knows what will blow in.

heh were so dry it could rain here for a few months and all the water might do is fill up the aqueducts …

let me know how that tastes cause it sounds :face_vomiting: but supposedly you can put tomato in chocolate cake and not be able to tell the difference

HMM flyboy that might mean we get a snow day or two down here also …although I prefer is snows in the mountains cause I’m not a snow person and 2 its how we mostly get our water and the last time it didn’t snow enough the water rationing was almost soylent green style …

The adovada was declared a success by all. Serving it over rice was not exactly ethnically correct, but it worked very well. The store-bought strawberry and cream cheese tarts were a hit also. Plus some leftovers for us. The niece brought us some beautiful tomatoes and squash from their garden, plus some jars of their homemade salsa and spaghetti sauce.

Got in a walk this morning, adding a couple of blocks to my previous walks, so I’m feeling superior to all you slackers out there.

Crossworded and wordled. On to some get-out-the-vote postcards.

It rained all morning, so the lawn is still shaggy. Sun is out now, if it dries, I’ll get to the outdoor chores later. Indoor chores are done.

BooFae Glad you had a good time at the show. Not really my thing anymore, too people-y, but I went to my share of them when I was younger.

To Whoever Sent Me A Lil’ Anonymous Gift:

THANK YOU!!!

:purple_heart: :horse: :high_heel: :gem:

It’s funny that my username has become such a part of my identity, at least with you folks.

My freshman year of college I took one of those stoopit personality quizzes, which informed that of all the Lucky Charm marshmallows, my personality best matched of … well, you know.

Real deep & insightful, huh? Teenagers lap that shit up.

Anyway, this result pleased me, because purple was my 2nd favorite color after blue, and because I was one of those horse-obsessed little girls, so why not?

Coupla months later I was setting up a hotmail account, and after numerous failed tries hit upon an address that hadn’t been taken yet. (It was the late 90s, hotmail was the shit, tech-wise.)

Several years later, I wanted to ask a particular question, found a random message board, and when asked to set up a username, simply re-used the email.

TWENTY YEARS LATER someone I’ve never met sent me earrings to cheer me up during a rough patch, and gave me the happy sniffles this morning.

They’re really, really pretty, too. So sparkly!

So, once again, thank you … and another “thank you” to the Mumper who relayed that I need to check my mailbox so the sender could stay behind the curtain.

aww thats sooo sweet ill reserve my planned bitching about family for later …

I picked up my license tab for 9/2024 (good for seven days) and also my 2025 tab. So over $300 altogether.

I’m thinking I’ll replace the covering on the canopy garage this afternoon.

OK, I know you’ve all been dying to ask but didn’t want to impose. So here is a pic of what three $100K, 600HP outboards look like:
Imgur
Apparently the one in the middle, which hangs just a tad lower, hit a rock or something and that’s why the boat was hauled out and some work was done on all 3 of them. I’ve been told the boat they’re hanging on cost around one megabuck. It must have some fancy-pants stuff inside, because the outside ain’t all that special. Anyway, if you own a couple of auto dealerships, you can get toys like this.

FCD got done what he wanted on the boat. First thing was to re-tie the dock lines and move the fenders so they keep us off the pilings. Then I did the usual hand-him-tools to keep him from having to climb in and out of the engine room. Plus I solved a couple of little problems for him - go me! On Moanday, the chief electrical guy will be meeting with him and they’ll do an inspect/test of all the work that was done. Then, perhaps, finally, we can move back to our marina. Maybe. Fingers crossed.

After finishing the boat work and tidying the main cabin, we drove around to check on the rebirth of an old cafe (too crowded to try today, but some day soon.) We also walked thru a very $$$ farmer’s market - all the vendors were really proud of their stuff. Finally, we went to Texas Roadhouse for lunch, meaning we won’t be wanting supper. It was so nice to be just the 2 of us. Now we’re back home, waiting for a call from MIL.

I need to clean the critter fountain. Eventually. Maybe tomorrow. Whatever…

Afternoon all. Soccer has been coached (successfully, the Under-10 boys won 2-1 and the Under-9 boys won 3-1) and also refereed without any fainting symptoms. Of course, temperatures in the 60-70’s F helped immeasurably on that score, I feel so good I just signed up to referee a game about 20 miles away from me at 3:30p just because I have had time to rest and fell good. Once that is done I’ll be back in stay-at-home mode until Sunday rolls around.

shoe, hope sleepage improved your outlook on life. Don’t think I’ve ever tried a Wendy’s crossiant, but your description intrigues me…

Taters, glad the surgeries for the pups went well, how long do they have to wear the collars for?

Boo fae, sounds like a perfect Friday/Saturday was had.

Cookie, congrats on your culinary triumph.

FCM, that doesn’t look like the Queen Mary, so I’d hazard a guess that all three of those beasts opened at full throttle would damn near shake that boat apart. Glad yours is coming along and that you and FCD got some ‘me’ time together.

OK, about 30 more minutes of sloth and then need to gather up my refereeing tools and head out for some more exercise. Take care all.

Today I finally saw my gravestone

Some time back I got all the arrangements for my funeral finished. It’s paid for, even the service planned. I also got the stone set up.

I had always planned to go to a certain cemetery in the country, where a lot of family on my mother’s side are interred. I almost changed my mind, as there was one spot the family owned here in town, near to a lot of other members. But then my sister died unexpectedly and she and my BIL had no plans set up. So it was easy to let the spot go to my sister, as when my BIL passes he will be cremated and so they don’t need two spaces, he will be placed along with my sis.

The stone has already been there for almost a year, but I simply haven’t been to see it, mostly due to mobility issues. But this weekend other family is in town for a reunion and two cousins wanted to go and see their stepfather’s grave, and where their mother will be. Right next to me as it happens. On the other side will be a great grandmother.

So my name and current dates are on it, with engravings of iris flowers like the ones that grow all around out there. There’s also a small engraving of an apron and rolling pin, for my being a baker. And below that are three surnames written, all from mom’s side. people in the cemetery I’m related to. It keeps me connected as I will be the only person with my surname. I chose those names to be included as there is another grave for a woman named Amanda Owen, the only person with that name. She died at the age of twenty in 1881, and the spot has never been tended in my lifetime. I do put flowers on it. The stone says “Amanda, you have left me but are not forgotten” beneath a carving of clasped hands. My guess is she was a young wife, and the husband remarried and is buried elsewhere.

I hope nobody thinks this planning ahead is morbid.* But I have no kids so when I go I don’t want to be a burden on those who are left. My sister is only a year and a half younger than I and has no kids. There are two nephews, but if it comes down to them I have stuff alll arranged.

  • I am the DeathMistress after all.

I believe that is a smart and loving thing, baker. Not morbid at all.

I’ve been slowly filing out my “when I’m gone” book.

Today was shopping trip. Got some fun Halloween stuff at micheals. Small bat disco balls and a coffin tray. Target had mini Halloween pez dispensers, and a really cute ufo lamp (5 dollars!)

Got home before a fast storm hit. I’ve started packing up the summer clothes. Once again hallmark mystery on the telly.

I hope the puppies heal up quickly and easily, taters.

Well, peace and quiet is over. We’re being treated to a monolog about people I never knew in places I’ve never seen. It was so nice while it was just the 2 of us. Part of our lunch time was spent talking about things we plan to do after she dies. Yeah, just a tad morbid.

Someone in the area is shooting some sort of gun. I’m hoping it’s just target practice being done safely. But there’s so much stupid out there…

@Baker Seeing your own gravestone is a bit of a shock but it sounds like you planned it all out quite well. Not a morbid thing at all. I’d say it’s realistic but difficult planning. Good for you.

When my only son died 16 years ago I just had the stone mason carve everything on my side of the stone so all that is needed to add is the date I depart. I kind of stopped at that point.

This year I am now working on all of the end of life planning and have to get to the funeral home to make arrangements.
Not a pleasant task is it?

But it will make it easier for the ones in charge of taking care of everything. It’s a gift to them. At least that is how I look at it.

I’ve updated my will, power(s) of attorney and living will. Just picked it up from the attorney’s office last week.

Your post here has lit a fire under my butt and I have now scribbled Make Funeral Arrangements on my to do list.

But yeah that stone is a bit of a jolt to look at.

Howdy Y’all! The rain has gone away. It was supposed to hang around for a couple of days, but, oh well. High RDOS inactivities have ruled the day. I did put on real shoes to drive down the road to pick up the General’s chikin for N.O.L. I figured nobody in the place would clutch pearls and faint at the sight of me in a tshirt and shorts. They did not. My Dawgs won big time, as expected. Now I am ready for Netflix, chill, and popcorn.

CupCakes not morbid at all IMO. Both of us have everything planned out down to where our cremains will be plopped down in the church columbarium. I think it wise to plan. I considered hirin’ professional mourners, but felt that would be seen as ostentatious.

It sounds like you had a lovely day. I’m envious of the tomatoes, salsa and spaghetti sauce though.

Awwww…how sweet!

Call me a party pooper, but I’d rather spend that kind of moola on a little 1500 square foot house. Of course, the owner of the boat and outboards likely doesn’t lack housing options.

I hope that the puppers heal quickly taters. Did they have to do much to fix Buster’s testicle issue?

I’m so sorry about your sister’s passing baker. You are doing the wise thing in setting up arrangements ahead of time.

The apartment is cleaneded, prescription picked up and a trip to the dog park was made. It was beautiful weather for that and Nelson had plenty of company on the small dog side. I also had a good chat with Jersey and Bandit’s moms. Supper was a couple of queso wraps from Sonic and a salad. Now to play around in the studio.
