Good post-Thanksgiving morning to all. Up and enjoying coffee, but not my normal solitude (guests roaming about).
The following is a post from three days ago that has been stuck in my somehow constipated reply window. For days it has refused being entered or removed – and I haven’t been able to comment in this thread. But only this thread.
So from three days ago (lotta stuff happened)…
Damn, I’m sorry I missed that earlier. Wishing you good memories and a good day, despite the inevitable sadness.
Real fish, glad to hear about the good care for your dad. Crossing that rubicon as we speak, and it’s difficult to evaluate and help from a distance.
I proudly proclaimed my wisdom and cleverness in avoiding the airports during this holiday – and the gods laughed.
Yesterday, my (handicapped) sibling was attempting travel to relatives with a changeover at DFW airport, and the wheels came off. After deplaning from the legacy carrier and attempting to board the small regional plane, the regional officials decided they didn’t like her ID – and refused to allow her to board. She’d been traveling with an expired driver’s license, accompanied by an official state document that it had been renewed but not reprinted yet. Legacy carrier was OK with it, TSA was OK with it, regional was not.
By the time various phone calls reached me, sibling was sobbing on the floor of an airport bathroom, completely overwhelmed. She was stuck mid-journey, with no way to return or go forward, and had become an involuntary skip-lagger (leaving flight mid way).
Since it’s an hour away, I headed for DFW to collect her, and she’s now comfortable with a warm place to stay, among family, with an affectionate dog in her lap. All is OK for now, but we still have to navigate the ID uncertainty and put together plan B (two days of driving to return her home – she can’t drive even if a rental were available this weekend). And, of course, I’m still on surgical limits as far as long distance driving. Sigh…
We’re not 100% certain she can rejoin her original flight in a few days to get back home. Airline customer service assures us all is well, but the opinion of someone in a call center in the Philippines may not match up with agents here.
So my arrogant plans to avoid all airports have been changed. I may end up spending quite a few hours there, as I need to help her get set up, and make sure all the parties agree the ID is acceptable. I’ll need to hang around until boarding is assured.
Never taunt the travel gods. They are vicious and vindictive.
