(Old) Day Trips planned in the MMP

Why, it IS my cake day! I didn’t notice. Grab a fork, everyone, and let’s share this sucker–I mean, cake. Thanks for the nice wishes!

There are strange men on my balcony calling to each other in Spanish. I can’t see out of any of my windows because they’re covered with cloudy plastic. So is the front door. Yep, the painters are here. They were just setting up when I left at 8:15, so it’s taking quite awhile even with the sprayer. I’m glad they’re here. I hope they take the plastic before they leave.

SO…doctor’s appointment. The first thing he said was, “I’m so glad you came in today. I saw your MRI and that knee is a mess.” The PA was wrong, so wrong, on so many things. The main issue is arthritis. Some spots are bone-on-bone, and the femur shows signs of wear from rubbing on the tibia. He said the bone edema is severe. The meniscus can’t be repaired, and the loose bodies (cartilage bits in the fluid) are causing more inflammation. “That knee is on fire. You must be in terrible pain.”

The upshot is that I need a total knee replacement. Having seen what my sister went through last year, I’m not exactly thrilled, but at least there’s a way to fix this. Also, he says he’ll give me a nerve block, and the robot-assisted surgery has an easier and shorter recovery than the kind my sister had. Also, he said I’m already in so much pain, the recovery pain won’t be much worse. I don’t know exactly when the surgery will take place, but I think later in August.

Thank you all for all your support, sympathy, and advice. I’m very grateful.

flyboy, fingers are crossed re: plumber. You certainly constitute an emergency now, right?

Don’t forget to buy a spangly outfit for the floor show.

CatGlove, please take photos if you see the Northern Lights. I’ve seen them a few times, but not the colorful variety. The “curtains” were a shimmering green–still beautiful, but not quite as breathtaking as the full-color kind.

WetOne, what a relief that you’re able to get your badly-needed medication for free!

Yaay Nellie!!!1!!11!. It seems odd to cheer about a destroyed knee, but the fact you got a doc who totally agreed with you about the severity and has a comprehensive fix is all to the good. I hope you were able to express your dismay about the PA’s abject uselessness.

Her Ladyship is off at lady’s book club so I have been bacheloring around the house all afternoon. She’ll head back about in time for us to sort out a dinner. I have no great ideas. Yet.

Nellie, I’m glad you have someone competent to make a knee plan with.

Nelliebly, glad your doctor was able to see what you are feeling. I hope all goes smoothly on recovery.

@nelliebly

My mom, at age 70, had a “Bad Knee” for years before he doctor convinced her to get it replaced. She said that the knee hurt less when the anesthetic wore off than it did when she woke up that morning. She regretted waiting so long.

I hope yours goes as well as hers did

My late aged MIL waited on a bad knee until she was old and infirm enough that nobody was willing to operate on her for anything. Such that she spent the last 10 years of her life driving a scooter because she could no longer walk.

There was much more to the story of how it got that way, some of which paints MIL in a more favorable light than my snip above, but the punchline is still that all else equal earlier is better.

Howdy Y’all! There was a break in the rain, so I decided to go pick up two ‘scripts that were due for refill. I did that via drive thru, so didn’t need to look too presentable, meanin’ the shorts, and tshirt I was wearin’ were quite acceptable wear. They also double as jammies for me, so I went out in public in my jammies. Other than that, nappage was achieved and sup got fixed and et. OYKW did kitchen cleanup while I lolled about.

shoe I, too, am impressed with your newly acquired mad pizza oven skilz!

Nellie glad you got some news about your knee and what you can do about a fix. OK, it’s not great news, but the knee replacement will make you feel so much better eventually. Plus, you’ll get the good stuff for the pain.

The leak is fixed. He said he replaced the fitting.

The spigot has a cap on top. He said it’s something like a pressure release that prevents water from backing up into the system. I’m not sure how that works. If the tap is off, water can’t rub up the hose and into the pipes – which has a lot more pressure.

WTG shoe for your oven mastery!

Moooooom, should you or FCD wind up itchy and/or sunburned in the future, Walgreen’s sells a store brand of aloe gel with menthol and one with both menthol and lidocaine that does wonders.

I’m glad that you were able to get a manufacturer’s subsidy on your prescription wet one. If they would only price them within reach out of the gate, there would be no need for them.

:tacklehug:seanette :tacklehug: It’s good to see you back.

Yay on the prospective pain relief nellie. I know that you’re looking forward to your rebuilt knee.

I’s tah-red. Thanks to a certain reddish doggy, I got about 3 hours of sleep last night (the thunderstorm bothered him, which meant that everytime I began to drift off to sleep, he bothered me). I went to irk, then, when I ducked into the ladies’ room, someone hosed themself down with some nasty@$$ perfume, giving me a headache and breathing issues on top of the lack of sleep. If I didn’t need my upcoming PTO for more fun / useful things, I would have been tempted to have laid out. Oh, well.

Stay safe and healthy y’all!

It starts each week with the first person to make the new thread. We wait until Monday morning. Folks on the east coast get up earlier than, say, those in the west, so most often it will be an easterner who starts it. Just get up really early on Monday and see if one has been started, if not you can wait, or start it yourself.

Welcome to the Dope! I’ve been here a long time, being a 99’er, but we always need new blood…uh, posters.

The above is what I tried to transfer from last week’s thread, for a new poster Trieste. They said they have been a lurker and wanted to know how to find the weel’s MMP threads.

May a choir of angels sing!

This elicited a snort from me!

Yay for your diagnosis! Knee replacement surgery worked wonders for a number of folks I know. Hope it’s the answer you need. (Or kneed??) I crack me up!

Chillage continues!

I’m just back from a mini dope-fest. thorny locust and I met up with penultima thule on his travels around the US here in upstate NY. Was a very nice time chatting with some imaginary friends in real life.

nellie Glad you found a doc who knows what’s what.

flyboy Huzzah on the water leak fixin’.

shoe Go you on oven-ing.

I can not believe how much it hurt!!!

Glad you were able to meet up with them!

So lotta pain to install it and more pain to remove it. Perhaps a lesson there somewhere for some young person.

But good to hear you’re out the other end.

Congrats to flyboy for a successful repair for less than the price of a new house.

This was @Trieste 's actual post:

Baker managed to re-post their own response there upthread here too.

You keep making jokes that bad and you may need two new knees to replace the ones that got baseball-batted.

As to me …
Her Ladyship returned from book club just in time to get here as tehe thunder hit and the rain began. But it was sun rain and we had a wonderful rainbow with a faint secondary bow out over the ocean. Yaay! The only thing better than a rainbow is two of them, one inside out. Pretty quickly the rain quit and it was nice and clear again.

Headed off to dinner at a semi-snazzy Italian place we’d not been. I had a whole wheat pasta blended with sautéed spinach and toasted garlic with braised short ribs and a bit of gravy on top. She had a meatball & peppers app as her entrée. We also had an app of olives and parm chunks. A decent Tuscan red finished the bill of fare. Nice.

Now home and winding down. Tomorrow is another day.

Up from naptime, having an Old Fashioned. TIL Spot has no interest in catnip.

not yet. it’s Twilight/Midnight. And with my luck it would be 8 hours of unloading 53 footers. :grimacing:

Hope not, either.

How long have you been posting in threads with me and swampy, and you’re shocked?

Going full Squeegee Derelict actually sounds fun.

Happy Cake Day!
And good luck on the knee surgery!

Evening all. Just got off the phone with brother, I have to do most of the calling in this relationship, did get a fair amount of conversation out of him, hopefully can plan my Thanksgiving travels in a couple of weeks. Swimming and sauna have been completed and Freddy’s Steakburgers took care of dinner, so I am fed and content. Working on the NY Times Moanday crossword, I can usually solve this one, but by Friday when I usually get another paper, my solution is usually about 80%. Then some reading and we’ll call it a night.

flyboy, yeah, forgot you have a wife there; during my troubles I’d make sure both bathroom tanks were full before shutting the water off, so I had four flushes (one in the basin and one in the tank, and sometimes let the #1 fluid collect from several trips before flushing. That probably wouldn’t float (snerk) if I had feminine companionship… And reading onward, Yea! that the leak is fixed…hopefully for good this time.

Cat Glove, hope hubby came through the Chemo OK.

quietly, yeah, why anyone goes to Vegas in the summer is beyond rational understanding…(raises hand-been there several times in August).

JtC, sounds like you have good folks there taking care of your drug habit…

Seanette, good to see you around and about the old place.

nettie, glad the Doctor got things straightened out, might be that the PA has done this before (misinterpreted data). An operation in August ain’t the grandest thing to look forward to, but if it keeps you mobile for years to come, it’s worth it. Hope the paint job looks good. And happy cake day.

VanGo, I have been following penultima thule on his travels, glad you got to meet him. Hopefully I’ll get to meet several Mumpers this weekend.

OK, that should (maybe) catch me up, off to do some more puzzle solving and newspaper reading this night before bedtime. Catch y’all tomorrow (either before or after my dental appointment :astonished: :astonished: :astonished:).

I think there are lots of things to day trip to in No. Illinois. But hey, what do I know. I would count an IceHogs game as a day trip. Or strawberry picking.

Had a good time at the race track and the weather was beauoootiful. Now we need some rain. And then we need some rain. Came back to town and crashed. Got up this morning to find the friend who has been kind enough to host me has managed to slip a disc so we went off to urgent care for her to get instructions and prescriptions and then settled her in and went to irk two hours late. Not bad. The apartment complex is calling me every day to sign the agreement and get my keys so I can start paying them rent. I’m trying to organize moving in and am motivated to pay as little rent as possible this month because of moving costs. And now my friend has a banjaxed back. Sigh. Glad I could help but… she’s now going on about how God provided me to her to help her through this. Uh, no. I’m still moving. And now I’m motivated to sign the agreement. :joy:

Got a trip to SW Minnesota planned; it will be a two-day trip so my friend can see that part of the state, plus another trip or two to races. Between that and moving, that will use up my summer. I would take more day trips, but I also find that the Mpls Farmers’ Market is like a small festival each day I visit and that’s enough for me.

Happy Doperversary Nellie!

Good on the pizza oven success, shoe

Do I need to clutch any faintin’ pearls?

I am so happy you found someone who can help.
