Howdy Y’all! We did motivate and go visit Rose (the person I mentioned a few weeks back who had a fall at home) at her assisted livin’ place this mornin’. It is a nice place and I am sure very pricey. Her son was there so we all had a nice chat. When we left, I called the Chinese takeout place that’s just down the road from da cave, placed an order and we picked it up on the way back to da cave. Thus, we swiped the General’s N.O.L. This means we did not grill chikin strips and have sallits. That will become tomorrow’s sup. So it goes in swampland this fine Sattidy. Oh, we sat out by the cee-mint pond again and drank beerverages cause it was a balmy seventy-two Amurrkin this afternoon.
Frogs are cute! What a great idea.
Okay, had maintenance come today ( its their day off) because my burners were smelling burny.
He fixed it and I asked him to look at my oven and he said it needs cleaned. I have been in this apt. 3 years and never thought to clean it. Its not horrible but stuff on the door is baked on and theres a bit on the upper insides. I wiped the bottom out.
I have been trying to figure why my hair started coming out too much and breaking and Maybe its the shampoo.
I had been using Garnier Fructis but it made my head a bit itchy. So I used pantene sample size for a bit. Then Dove men+clean fresh and clean and I’m wondering if thats it. It makes it fluffy and smooth but flyaway.
If I were a millionaire I would use Nexxus.
Any suggestions, shampoo wise?
Evening all. The last indoor soccer game has been coached (we won 4-0) and got some gym time in so I didn’t feel too guilty about the big bowl of Fettuchini I just put away. Need to go out again in about 40 minutes, I need to open the gym tomorrow for a different age group soccer games, the usual guys can’t make it so I volunteered. Cooling off now (49F) but up into the 60’s tomorrow so may have to actually do stuff.
Sounds like a plan.
Are they trying to pi** off the greatest number of people possible? Sure looks that way. Probably an idea from some hired “Management Improvement Program” idiot. And sorry for Ms. LA.
Shoe, hope tonight goes better.
rocky, hope Rudy Guiliani isn’t there to challenge the vote…
Spicy, the frog research sounds interesting, if Husband unit can get a little enthusiasm for it, sounds like a nice change of pace while doing something good. And perhaps a dumb question; do you have two kids or is all the activities (swimming for example) for Wee Weasel?
And a little trepidation at something new is to be expected; just take it easy, I figure they are used to folks coming in with some nerves.
Coppertone, do you have a self-cleaning over (at least for the inside). As for shampoo, I used a Dial 3-in-1 brand for body and hair, but since I have much less hair than you do and don’t worry if it falls out (been doing that for 50 years), so not a real suggestion.
OK, need to head over to the gym and get the keys for tomorrow. Take care all.
When my mom was blind, with dementia and using a walker, she would attempt laundry any time my dad stepped out for an hour or so. One time on the phone, Dad said something along the lines of Half my clothes have bleach stains and it’s like a gd Easter egg hunt to find the rest. After I snorted coffee all over my keyboard, I advised him to hide the bleach and hit Wally World for a couple of six packs of tighty whities.
Given your MIL’s generation, there’s a good chance that she’s also using scented fabric softener and / or dryer sheets.
Got the scrip picked up, along with a few toiletries from Tar-jay. I got a lovely surprise when I checked out. One of my old Sunday Assembly friends from the early years of the local branch was behind the register. We caught up as much as possible with someone behind me. She and her husband moved back to Florida for a while, then he passed and her daughters convinced her to come back to Nashville. Right now, she’s working two part time gigs until she gets settled.
I’ve been working on the album most of the day, with time out to play with Nelson. As many years as he’s been with me, I still get tickled when he hits the brakes on the vinyl floors in the kitchen or bathroom. At least he’s learned to control his slide so’s he doesn’t hit the bathtub or kitchen cabinets headfirst.
Off to finish up another layout. I’m almost 1/3 of the way finished now.
You might find comfort in Natalie Goldberg’s The Great Spring, which opens with several stories in which she feels like she’s doing Zen wrong even after decades of practice.
Natalie = big-ass fancy famous Zen writing instructor.
Up from naptime. Spot’s new thing is finger licking. I hope it’s just affectionate cleaning and not developing a taste for human flesh. Having a Vieux Carré and watching hockey.
Deep breath. It’s a journey, not a final destination.
And I like the frog date idea.
Once in awhile, the stars align and there is a close-to-perfect day.
My time was my own to spend how I chose. The sun shone all day and the green trees and pasture were brilliant!
The puppy was sweet and well behaved (for him). We had several fun play sessions and he got a long romp outside in the pasture off leash. He even came to me every single time I called him! Who’s a Good Boy?
A recent photo with his favorite toy, a stuffed croissant:
Then tonight I realized I had everything I needed in the house for a favorite dinner, a lemon shrimp salad with lettuce, celery, onion, avocado, grape tomatoes and a chopped egg. A beer alongside.
Isn’t it nice when a day feels splendid? A rare occurrence to be savored.
My best to everyone, and may you all enjoy a splendid day of your own!
Got the keys for the school gym tomorrow, just have to remember it (have written it down in 2 places). Also addressed a couple envelopes for kids that missed the game today, got gift cards for all of them to a sporting goods store, so will mail them off tomorrow. Not much else of interest tonight, may turn in early.
shoe, full moon is brightening up our sky here. Very nice.
Spicy, Wheelie and doggio have offered better advice than I could dream of, but I remember the old Arabic saying “In’shallah”, or loosely translated “As God wills it”. While associated with Islam, it’s a nice term I (a dedicated agnostic-areligionist) use at times when things go sideways on me…if things happen, just remember In’shallh (In-shal-lah) and it’ll work out.
Bright Tree, that is one cute pup, reminds me of my dog Tina when I was but a youth. And since you had a spendid day today, why not have another one tomorrow? Could become a habit, you know…
Maybe he just likes the residual taste of lemon or maraschino cherries.
bright tree, that’s one handsome pupper you have there. If you find yourself around Nashville, TN, holler and we’ll set up a playdate with my boy Nelson.
metal mouse I’m a little surprised that the school gave you keys without hassle. I’m doing part time work at the school and I had to get fingerprinted and background checked before they gave me key card access to the building, even though I’ve been doing this for 10+ years. On the plus side I now have a card that lets me into the building. 'course our little town is kinda reeeealy blue.
One of the joys of being old is always being in that mindset. Of course, I was in the “don’t sweat the small stuff” camp, with extra helpings of “its always small stuff” as a young stoner, so that aged with me. Once I hit my 40’s I learned that I really didn’t care that much about the regular daily annoyances as much as I liked to wallow in my annoying day. Once I turned 60, almost all of my fucks were gone and now I can nod and smile at hubs when he tells me that eclipses are done by AI.
Speaking of the Eclipse, I thought I would order another set of eclipse glasses to use on my phone. Of course they make such a thing, why would I have doubted it, LOL! (I’m also made a cardboard “frame” to tape to my phone so I don’t look at the sun while holding my phone up.)
Calm is always good, I hope it continues.
OMG, his feets are bigger than GG’s!
Who’s a handsome guy! What a good boy
Hurray for a good day after all of the recent upsets. Having things dug up is always stressful! (Yes, I do read the pit!)
Put the keys in the pock of the pants you will be wearing in the morning. No remembering required
Evening all - Almost bedtime here in beautiful Western FL.
My Swamp Cabbage adventure was great. Got there timely under beautiful nearly clear skies and a temp in the upper 60s. Found a shady spot near the start of the parade and watched 90 minutes (!) of small town Americana stroll by. By then, nearly noon, it had warmed into the 70s; just ideal festival weather. A couple thousand people thought the same thing. So many happy-looking kids & couples and such.
Then walked over to the festival itself in the main city park by the river, where crafts & schlock were ogled, a smoked turkey leg was consumed, deep-fried Oreos were abjured, music was heard, and a cocktail called “swamp water” was had. A literally bilious looking concoction of Midori, Curacao, clear booze, and pineapple juice. A bit sweet, but otherwise tasty.
After an hour-plus of that I drove over to the airshow a mile away, saw a bunch of planes in the air and on the ground, had a lot of nostalgia for back when I played with small planes, but no rekindled desire. Yakked with a couple of our pilots or retirees, but nobody I knew. Then back to the festival for more festivating.
By mid-afternoon I had decided to skip the evening rodeo; after about 5 hours total I’d had about all of agro-America I could stand. Great place to visit but I sure would not want to live there.
Zipped down the highway the 20 miles to the budget motel on the outskirts of civilization, checked in, napped 90 minutes, took a fresh shower then drove the remaining ~10 miles into beautiful downtown Ft. Myers for their small but vibrant nightlife. Saw sunset at a rooftop bar, had a sorta chef’s salad for dinner at another place, caught a bit of live music, then eventually had a stogie at a great cigar bar. Lotsa folks were having a lovely if chilly (65/19) and breezy evening. Now back at the hotel.
I’ll upload the pix from both days after the trip is over; this cheapass hotel has cheapass wifi and there are a LOT of pix of Americana.
Tomorrow I’ll go down and reconnoiter their beach area in the morning then baseball (Yaay!) starting at 1pm, then drive the ~2 hours back home. Hurricane Ian pretty well devastated the beach area 18 months ago so it’ll be interesting to see how well they’ve bounced back.
As to the 30 post’s y’all have done while I was goofing about …
Yaay Doperversay for Metalmouse!
FCM Hope the eye exam went well. Yeah, scented laundry products are nasty. Don’t forget MIL’s nose works about as well as her eyes and ears, so overuse of scents is to be expected.
“Swamp cabbage” is the exact same thing as hearts of palm that you might find in a grocery store or a fancy salad. The local natives used it as staple food. When the first European explorers got here, that was about all there was to eat. So like all starving Europeans everywhere, they called whatever they could scrounge “cabbage”. So “Swamp cabbage”.
Anyhow, lotsa small towns have an annual [Local Agricultural Product] Festival in the spring or fall. Any excuse for a party with excess fried foods, a hokey parade, a beauty contest and festival Queen, plus plenty of C&W music. Outside St. Louis the once-small town of Edwardsville IL has an annual Horseradish Festival. Before the last of the farms where I grew up were paved over for suburbia, we had a Strawberry Festival. Where I visited today, they grow palms to harvest their hearts. This was the 58th annual festival.
Yaay for all your meal prep for tonight; hope it’s going well as I type.
And late add: Yep, a perfect full moon under clear skies here too. Good thing; if we saw different Moon phases that would be bad; very bad.
@Aspenglow: Yaay for a perfect day. Those are sooo good when they happen. Congrats!
Get a paperclip and use it like a carabiner to attach the school keyring to your own keyring. You’re not getting there without your own keys. I use the ~1-1/2" paperclips as temporary carabiners for all sorts of things to not forget.
Mayer has Garlic Queens!!! (Prescott has cow poop BINGO)
I always look forward to the Garlic festival, the food isn’t the best (not enough garlic) but the hokey festival and the many varieties of garlic for sale is amazing.
Hubs was in the auto body repair business all the years we were married and he used to come home smelling very “fragrant”. I learned to add a cup of white vinegar to the washing machine to get the smells out of his clothes.
One bottle lasts me a year, but I only wash my shoulder length hair every other day.
So today our housekeeper was having a moving sale and we were underwhelmed. She’s got so much crap, all of her children put their crap in her shed and when it got full, they got another one to fill. She says that she had made an arrangement with the buyer to allow her to leave whatever she can’t sell or give away for him to clean out. Of course that cost her money on the sale price, but she just wants out.
I hadn’t realized that there were four other adults as well as two tween boys in her single wide mobile. No wonder she’s so desperate to get out.
As we couldn’t find anything we wanted to buy from her, we are planning on giving her a nice cash gift on her last day cleaning for us.
A friend gave me the name of someone she likes, so I guess we will start there because I’ve gotten way too spoiled to start cleaning for myself again.
We went to Fairhaven today to check out an art gallery. Mrs. L.A. bought a couple of low-numbered prints. They had prints numbered ‘1 of 4’ and other low numbers. She likes low-numbered prints. She bought two small ones, at a very reasonable price. I think she might use her Christmas present to have them framed.
Afterward, we went to The Black Cat. We each had two drinks. We shared a crab melt, and I had two oyster shooters (no vodka). We met a very nice young woman who was sitting at the bar next to us. She’s a chemical engineer at the refinery. Apparently (I was off urinating) she prefers her own company to people she would rather not hang out with. She likes Gateway 1890 but didn’t know about Smugglers Tunnel Speakeasy. Maybe we’ll run into her there one Friday. Mrs. L.A. isn’t very social, and apparently this girl initiated the conversation. Mrs. L.A. she says she can relate to going out single.
Maybe I should do that ‘gratitude journal’. The day started on a low note upon hearing of Mrs. L.A.'s cousin’s demise, but ended up on a higher note upon meeting a 20-something that was interested in talking to oldsters.
