(Old) Every Girl Crazy 'Bout A Sharp Dressed MMP

i wasn’t sure which one i would get, they are all drool worthy. all are challah bread which i must agree makes really good french toast.

for the next few days i am hoping to get things done around the flat. as one must have someone with them after surgery, i must have the flat “visitor worthy”. one way to get things done…

Fifth and final load in the washer. FCD and Daughter got to Akron and are having lunch. Based on that, I don’t expect to see them before 8. Long time for me to be unsupervised… :open_mouth:

Another one of those busy shorthanded days. Made worse by Smalls stuffing anything with out a PAL label into their Not In Building bags, even if it’s stuff that needs clerking. Plus having to run some of the stuff myself, because Og forbid we keep enough people around to run last minute stuff. But anyways, I’m home, laundry is washed and tumbling in the dryer, so Spot and I shall nap

It wounds my heart with monotonous langour.

Around here people buy older cheap houses, knock them down, and put up mini McMansions. So there’s a lot of neighborhoods that have a bunch of 1800 sq. ft. ranches surrounding a 4000 sq. ft. 2 story semi-brutalist bunker.

I have in fact slid down it before.

Voodoo ritual for the old hen?

I"m sorry for the long rant. Thanks for not reaching through my laptop and smacking some shuddap into me.

Taters, thanks much for the info on local climate changes. I had a boyfriend several years back who moved here as a young man in the 1980s/1990s, and he said it rained more in the summer than it does now. One nearby complex advertises “air conditioners in all units,” so I guess people are starting to catch on.

Wordy, I’m impressed with all your husband has taught himself. And I agree that not owning a car saves a lot of money. I spend around $400 a year on Ubers, and that’s it, since the buses and my feet are free. (I should probably add in the cost of buying special sneakers more often, though.)

I am now craving french toast made with challah. Yum.

FCM, yay on the pants fitting!

Lily, I should have asked her. I suspect it was the tennis ball bouncing off walls–I’m a terrible pitcher.

This makes me ridiculously happy. And it reminds me of a silly story. At the school where I taught, there was a long, inclined hallway. I thought it’d be fun to ride down it on a desk chair, so I told one secretary and one custodian of my plan to ride the hallway after the kids left on the last day of school. Well, holy frick, word got around, and a crowd of 40-50 people came to watch a middle-aged women ride a desk chair. Anyway, I did it, but I felt like a pinball. I hadn’t factored in I had no way to steer, so I careened off walls all the way down, kind of like this kid.

Woo-hoo! Party at Fairy Chat Estates!

Off to a pointless interview. Its the last temperate day before the heat wave, so Ive gotten sandwich makings, pasta salad, cheesecake. to eat without cooking.

Happy birthday, Sticks and Scones! :birthday_cake:

And happy first day of summer, everyone in this hemisphere! :sun:

FCM’s “Hope Ooopsie is ok!” yesterday was well-timed (thank you!). Everything was fine until right at 4pm, when suddenly it got very dark and very windy outside. I didn’t think we were supposed to get anything until 6-7pm! Then, the wireless connectivity in the office dropped. A handful of us were in a conference room at the time, on a Teams call that had to end abruptly. Heh. A pretty big storm was clearly imminent, but there was no point in staying at the office so I decided to head home. The thunder/lightning/heavy rain started while I was in the elevator, and by the time I hit the lobby the outside visibility was pretty low. I figured the worst of it would only last 5-10 minutes so I made a dash for my car, and got somewhat soaked despite my umbrella. I sat with the car running for a minute, while the windows unfogged and I found dry spots on my blouse to clear my glasses with. By then there was still heavy rain but visibility was back to “normal” for a storm, so I headed to the highway. There were a few encounters with standing water, but nothing dicey: the biggest issue was actually debris. There were lots of small branches and leaf clusters on one of the side roads, and as soon as I hit the interstate (I-495) traffic slowed to a crawl…eventually I passed the massive branch that had fallen across 1.5 traffic lanes (the cops were there). It took an hour to get home, but happily my power was on when I arrived – though I could tell it had gone out at some point. Others weren’t so lucky, including friends who live just 5 miles away but still don’t have power yet (I told them they’re welcome to come here to charge things, sit in some air conditioning, etc.).

I took a picture of the pretty post-storm sunset through my front storm (heh) door:

At least the crushing humidity finally broke: this morning was gorgeous, clear and sunny and in the upper 60s with a light breeze. It was soooo nice! I was able to have the windows open all morning (it’s still only 81 and mostly nice outside, but it was starting to get warm in the house).

Last night I got my assignment for the neighboring congressional district’s Democratic Party unassembled caucus that will be held a week from tomorrow. Two weeks ago I learned that they needed volunteers to work the caucus – there will be a special election in September because that district’s congressman died last month – and I signed up (apparently I’m a sucker for this stuff). A week later there was a survey about availability and location preferences, and last night I got a call from the chief of the precinct I’ve been assigned to; we discussed my shift and position preferences. Neither of us has supported a caucus before, but we both have experience with county elections. I’ll be working a 2:30-7:00pm shift, then staying after the polls close to help count ballots. I might wind up working for 7-8 hours, which is fine with me; and, the location is only 3 miles from home. It’s still a week away, and I know that both parties have had to scramble to get their caucuses together, but I’m glad they’re finally making assignments and contacting us.

Tomorrow evening my dad and brother will drive down from Baltimore for a belated Father’s Day dinner at a restaurant not far from my house. I’m looking forward to seeing them, and am also grateful that I won’t have to cross the state line/deal with I-495 again until Monday morning.

You say that like those are bad things…

A similar avatar was also used for a while by Inigo Montoya…that one is actually what I drew my inspiration from.

You and me both, sister.

Have a great time!

 !

Welcome back (again)! What a stressful time it’s been – and still is – for you. :people_hugging:

Something I still can’t understand is when retirees decide to build their “dream home” which is big enough for the whole family to congregate, as they will on Christmas, maybe. Meanwhile, they’ve got this huge house to heat, cool, clean, and maintain. Some folks have strange dreams… < she says, looking around cautiously >

Lower 60s here when I went out to mow - gorgeous and glorious! I even opened the house for a little while, but now all windows are closed and a/c is doing its thing.

Last load is in the dryer. Haven’t heard a word from the travelers - I assume they’re on the way home. I supposed I could call…

TGIF!

doggio skip this next bit, because you are going to laugh and laugh…

Yesterday my group at work volunteered for four hours at the food bank. We were put with a youth church group to pack boxes of food, which apparently needed to be exactly 32 pounds or something had been left out or extra put in. Well the majority of the kids in the church group were too small to be hauling that size box around so they were in charge of putting the various food stuffs in and the adults (aka my coworkers) were assigned to load the boxes onto pallets and then take the full pallets into the warehouse.

Somehow the three shortest women all got grouped together on one loading station and the top row of boxes on each pallet had to be lifted a good amount higher than our heads to load everything. Then we needed to use a hand pallet jacket to move it to the warehouse, but once loaded the pallet was close to 2,000 pounds and I was the only one in our small group strong enough to pull the thing around (and two of use couldn’t be gone at once as the boxes were coming far too fast). Needless to say my shoulders and back are very unhappy with me today.

But the coordinator at the food bank said we boxed nearly 20,000 pounds of food so yay

How hilarious that must have been :joy: Too bad there’s no video!

Also, your post barely qualified as a rant, let along a long one…

oopsie Beautiful pic! And glad you made it through the storm.

Welcome back oververbose - it sounds like you’ve got a lot going on, and multiple rounds of layoffs is just exhausting and demoralizing. I hope you can get some rest on your time off.

Good evening all. Back from my last sightseeing in London, got a picture of me standing on the Prime Meridian and rode a Uber Boat to the Tower of London, then met up with some of my friends who’ll be on the ship with me and others who came out to wish us well. (Before I was on the SDMB I was on the James Randi Educational Foundation (JREF) forum and have a lot of friends from there, many of whom will be part of the cruise). Was a nice visit but will be going to bed soon as I want to be sure I can get to the train station on-time.

I promise I have read everything but just don’t have the energy to pick and choose, so yays and hugs in abundance for everyone. Don’t know we when I’ll be able to post again, hopefully once I get my cabin and Wi-Fi done. Take good care all.

Day One of my ‘vacation’.

I got up at a quarter 'til six, as usual. Mrs. L.A. had a doctor’s appointment at 09:30, and she went to visit her patients after that. I had a slice of Sara Lee Delightful Multi-Grain bread with margarine, topped with a Jimmy Dean’s sage sausage patty and an over-easy egg. I cleaned the toilet later. Later still, I boiled a couple of eggs and made tuna salad (large can of tuna, the two eggs, mayo, and tarragon). The cats got the tuna water. :smiling_cat_with_heart_eyes: Lunch was a Costco Giganto Dog ('Dinner Frank) and a glass of psyllium husks.

I’ve been watching Fear The Walking Dead all day. Mrs. L.A. stopped watching The Walking Dead when Carl died, and didn’t want to watch any of the other series. So I had to record everything and ‘watch them on my own time’. Finished the original series last year, and I’ve just finished Fear. Now I’m starting The Walking Dead: Dead City.

Done with another week of work at the museum. We have many plans, and many unknowns going forward. Like who is going to pour concrete, do I need to build the molds for said concrete, are we going to cordon off the entire science park for this build? All is in flux.

On the plus side, I’m making a prototype of an Aeolian harp to go into said park. I hope it works. Anyway, I’m having fun playing with cables.

I brought all the tools I think I’ll need for next week’s jaunt to Michigan. I’m gonna be helping a friend finish a new cabin on the family’s lake compound. I need to do a test fitting in my luggage to see if’n I can get all the tools and clothes in there, or if I need another rollie bag. I contacted Delta and I can check the cordless drills, but the batteries need to be carry-on.

Maintenance came back and reinstalled the piece he cut out of the sheetrock, then had to leave, so the bathroom sink is still not draining. At least I can close the closet doors now.

Got green chili stew simmering on the stove for dinner.

I think the Amish where I used to live had the right idea with the dawdy haus. A lot of times, you saw a large house with a small one in the yard. When the oldest kid got married, the young couple moved into the dawdy haus at one or the other’s family place while Mom and Dad finished raising the other 16 kids. Eventually, they would switch places, with the older couple living in the small house and the young family moving into the big one.

Good on you! Working with Second Harvest, I’ve been assigned to weigh scaling or forklift duty mostly (I can’t really lift, but I was a TOSHA certified forklift driver for many years and they didn’t often get volunteers who could do that).

I enjoyed the visit with SIL and my nephew. Right now, not only am I leaving sometime in late August, but her other bestie is moving to Colorado at the same time. Unfortunately, her other bestie is stepping into some very questionable financial and personal decisions. I just hope that it all works out for her.

On the way home, I stopped at the Pubic Sto’ for some salad fixings and yogurt, but also found that I had a gnawin’ and a cravin’ for fried chicken, so I got a couple of pieces while I was there.

Now for chillage.

That is amazing. I can’t imagine 20k pound of food.

I’m so glad you are still loving your job. Fingers crossed that things settle down and the museum gets money to keep you.

When I worked for the eye surgeons, they also did pilot certifications. Small private planes were very popular in Prescott and some of the pilots would get so stressed about their exam that I’d have to walk them across the street to the grocery store and take their blood pressure there. (Then they would buy treats for the office to make up for me not being there to put fires out.)

Mothman did not appear so I ate the pepperoni roll for breakfast and gave Harry the Dew to put in his guest fridge. (He’s not allowed to have that much caffeine anymore. His granddaughter is horrible mean to him, no Dew, no pipe, no walking around alone and enforced bedtime.)

I’m sorry your hubby is feeling poorly, I hope he starts feeling better real soon.

Happy longest day to you!

It’s hard to believe that summer is half way over already. It’s only now getting hot.

What is a fly screen? Don’t you folks keep your window screens mounted year round? Oh, and you reminded me to ask about your fancy new drapes. Have they been installed yet and do they look magnificent?

:people_hugging:

I really do hope that nothing is wrong, but I also trust you. You know your beloved dawg better than anyone else, if you are worried, you probably have very good reasons even if you can’t articulate them.

I’m so happy you are getting hearing aids. Not being able to hear clearly is so limiting, Mom and Hubs both said their world really changed when they started wearing them.

Delightful.

So far, I have only seen a few little ones in the beer plate. They aren’t very big.

Slugs, ticks and fleas are new to me, they don’t do well in the heat. While many of the new things here are just delightful, some aren’t nearly as nice.

I started writing in my daily log when Star Trek came out. Date, time, high and low temps as well as rainfall. Other stuff as the mood hit. The first date in my first book is 9/10/1966.

I have recorded evidence that temps have risen and rain fall has lessened in Southern California and Central AZ for the last almost 60 years.

We called it Global Warming back in the day.

I hate it when I do that. They sound lovely, I hope you can find one soon.

I’m sorry about your work situations and hope your husband finds a good job soon.

I would love to know the story about the woman with the chicken.

Is this your cataract surgery? They want you to have someone with you, but you won’t need anyone. You will be seriously dilated after the procedure, and might be a little tired but but all of the sedation will have worn off by the time they roll you out the door.

The hardest part will be the no lifting or bending thing, which is why you really want to get all of that stuff done while you can. Do remember that a laundry basket full of clothes is probably more than ten pounds so best to get all of that taken care of first.

I’m sure they are fine. Don’t call and distract them, just enjoy your last few minutes of quiet.

Nice to see you, overly.

20k# is a lot of food!

The sofa arrived and we’ve put the legs on. Looks good. I was asked if I’d moderate a panel at a conference. I’ve blocked out my next Camino. All seems to be well.

Howdy Y’all! We had quality cee-mint pond time along with nappage and day drinkin’. Chikin sallit got made and sup got fixed and et. Just another normal RDOS day.

And now this…

< AHEM > CLEARIN’ THROAT < AHEM >

And… dinner.

Mrs. L.A. remembered I’d made tuna-and-egg salad after she’d put mayo and horseradish on her bread and got the turkey out. So I has a t & a salad sandwich, with plenty of jalapeños and a slice of provolone, and a side of TJ’s kimchi. Mrs. L.A., who had been stationed in South Korea, said it was good (also, hot).

The Sting (1973) just started.

Lot of doper birthdays lately.

Interview-I was about two sentences in when she hired me. She says she has a problem with employees leaving after a paycheck.
I am to come in tomorrow with my i.d. and social.
That was a fast hire.
I am not getting too happy yet because I dont know if when she enters me into the system, it will come up Do not hire.
I am on quite a few do not hire lists; 5 that I can think of. I was hired at this place a few years ago and did not show so I am praying.

They got home safely and my poor sweetie is exhausted. Daughter and Casey have gone to her house and we’re chilling. Day is done. I’s tahred.
