It’s 53F, dark, wet, and cloudy. The forecast calls for morning showers, afternoon clouds, and a high of 69F. Our lows aren’t quite as cool as BrightTree’s yet, and they’ll remain in the 50s for at least the next 10 days. Yesterday, we received a good bit of morning rain, then a little afternoon clearing, and finally a late-afternoon/early-evening deluge. I quite enjoyed it.
JtC, I hope you’re feeling much, much better today. I’m glad you’re pleased with the medical care you receive, too.
FCM, I’m with you. I don’t like to take meds, but I will if directed. At least now you know.
Shoe, well, that shift doesn’t sound pleasant at all. I hope the AC is fixed tout de suite.
Yesterday was Zoe’s eighth birthday. The years are just flying by. It seems like she was just a tiny baby. Her presents arrived on time, so she got to unwrap them when she got home from school, and by all accounts, loved them. I received a thank-you video, too.
Mr. Taters went to bed early last night. He was having bathroom issues and kept breaking out in a cold sweat. His color didn’t look good, either. He’s still in bed and hopefully he’ll feel better today.
I didn’t get around to the laundry yesterday, so I guess I’ll do that today. I will also have to make a trip to the mailbox because I’m expecting some vintage Christmas tree ornaments. I’ve been looking for these things for years, and I bought them to send to my daughter because she has one of mine, and it’s her favorite ornament. I haven’t told her that I bought these (a set of three), and am mailing them to her as a little surprise.
I do need to get to the post office to mail my sister a check. She refuses to use electronic options, so I have to do things the old-fashioned way, which includes buying some postage.
But first, I need another cup of coffee, and then I’ll get the day fully started. Please take care of yourselves.
Good morning, all. I hit snooze on my walking alarm. I was about to hit snooze one more time to get to five 'til five, but my bladder said, “Nope! You got bidness to do.” It was 75ºF with a dew point of 73º. It was muggy. No playful, little euphemisms. It was a muggy, unpleasant morning. Because I’d gotten going a little earlier than usual, I missed the good color show at the top of the hill. The colors were nicer, if a little more obstructed at the dog park.
Tonight is Senior night at the Show Football Game. Our last one. We get to dress nicely and walk on the field as they call Squeaky’s name. Then Mrs Magill has to do a quick change into her Game Day “I have shit to do” clothes. I’ll hang with other Band Parents, take pictures and maybe a video for two, then during second quarter, I’ll get Squeaky a bag of chips and a coke[1], so he doesn’t have to spend his entire third quarter break in line at the concession stand with the other Band Kids.
I’ll head home after halftime and hang with Chloé, watching them likely kill off Rob Kerkovich’s character on Time for Chaos, a Call of Cthulhu actual play series on YouTube. Mrs Magill and Squeaky will probably go to the local wings place after the gang. The owner keeps it open late on home game dates, so the Band Kids can have a safe place to hang out.
Exciting times in the Magill household.
I started on spiro yesterday, so I guess I officially started to medically transition. Apparently there is a nation-wide Estradiol patch shortage right now, so I’m not sure when those will arrive. I think I might officially come out on the Board when I start that.
Time to catch up.
No worries and thank you.
Leave it!
I looks great. It’s very subtle and blends with her natural blond.
We’re in the process of trying to find some official documentation for Mrs Magill’s great-grandmother, who was born in New Brunswick around 1884. We’ve found a baptism record, but that’s it so far.
Tis a windy but mainly dry day up here, just the odd shower blowing through. Neither brain nor computer are being especially cooperative, so I’m giving things a break for a bit. An extra cup of coffee did nothing much, so I shall do some pottering in the garden, as that normally helps the brain, if not the computer. I even have some unwanted shrubs I can fight to burn off some frustration, which is handy.
Good morning all.The Firday shopping is done, not to much to get this first week of the month (did the big monthly shopping last Firday) and am inside at 9am with a temperature reading of 87F heading to 96F. Soccer practices have been cancelled for the last two days and it would not surprise me if they cancel them today. As for games on Saturday, they’ve moved some around so most are in the earlier hours. We’ll see how it goes.
Had my sticky pecan bun for breaking fast, lots of calories for little input of food but hey, if you can’t spoil yourself now and then, what’s living for? Will have a banana in a bit and then we’ll see what the day brings.
Hmmmm, busy 12 hours since I lasted visited, so entering scroll mode in 3…2…1…
Bright Tree, the things I don’t know about my phone could fill volumes. Will look into that, right now it is showing the time as being 2 hours early, so need to figure that out with the Clock app.
Lily, nice bag, I have a somewhat larger bag to carry all my soccer referee stuff (flags, extra uniform, stopwatch, whistles, medical kit…). Might have to look for one like that for my hearing aid stuff.
shoe, hope they get that AC fixed sooner than later; can’t imagine what it must be like around those ovens…
FCM, glad BIL made it through the operation, now if he can do the recovery work needed… Happy wood-splitting!
boo fae, glad some Mumpers are getting rain, none to be seen here.
Cookie, that picture is the definition of ‘foreboding’ IMHO. Hope it clears up.
J-Bats, interesting and does leave you with some options.
Knots, I have a couple of Duluth Trading polo shirts, they are fairly heavy-duty and good for the Fall season, for now, not so much.
Taters, Happy Zoe day. And hope Mr. Taters is doing better, that doesn’t sound good at all (and reminds me I need to schedule my flu and COVID shots, maybe pnuemonia too). Hope the ornaments make it to you in one piece.
Mollie, enjoy the Senior night, hope it isn’t too hot. I see the grade-school kids practicing or playing football in this weather and wonder how many 9-11 calls they need to make. Hope the medications show up as scheduled.
Nut, happy shrub-fighting!!
And made it to the end (for the moment). Onward into the day.
Something I wonder - since my pension and our SS are, obviously, from the gummint, what would happen if we decamped to another country? Not that we’re planning to… yet.
Check the time zone setting.
Anyway, back from grocery-ing. Weis had 24-packs of diet coke in cans for $9.99, so I got 2 for FCD. I prefer bottles and I stocked up on them last time. I got other stuff but since I didn’t make a list, dammit, I forgot soy sauce and Worcestershire. Not that I need them immediately - I just noticed the bottles I have are getting low. So no panic.
First load in the washer, 3 more on deck. FCD is futzing in the shop. I need to empty the dishwasher. And I need some food-related suggestions.
I cooked up a small chuck roast yesterday in my small crock pot. But since we went out to lunch, neither of us wanted supper. So, what should I do with the chuck and carrots? I could warm it up and add some spuds and onions. Or I could do something interesting if anyone here has an interesting suggestion.
And on that note, I guess I’ll put away the clean dishes.
Still entitled. But I know someone who won’t give up his U.S. citizenship because of his government (military) pension. Just in case.
It’s been a week since we got back from vacation. Very hectic and the suitcases, while unpacked, are not yet back to their normal storage place. The kitchen island is still covered with purchases and gifts from my parents - mostly candy (caramels and licorice), but also spices and OTC meds which are much cheaper in the U.S.
On Sunday night we had a storm and one of the tomato plants fell over so I had to harvest all the good tomatoes and clean up the rotten ones before going to work. I got about 4 dinner plates of red tomatoes and another 2 dinner plates worth of green tomatoes. I hope they might ripen up. If not, there’s going to be a lot of fried green tomatoes around here.
Mollie was haunting me in Amstersdam.
At hubby’s favorite coffee shop:
Along one of the canals (Why do flags always hang perfectly straight, until I get out my camera/phone, and then there’s a bit of a breeze?)
And fall is the equinox. It’s too darn hot to be fall. Not supposed to be 30°C/86°F in September.
Happy Friday, I’m looking forward to rolling into the holiday weekend. It’s still unbearably hot here so activities continue to be indoor ones.
My sister and BIL should come this weekend to help me hang up all of my new blinds. With the shorter days I really want to get them put up, as the entire back half of the house currently has no blinds at all. I also need to do a few small repairs - the countertop the dishwasher mount screws into is old and disintegrating, so the screw falls out and then the dishwasher falls forward any time you try to use it. I’m hoping longer screws will fix the issue - if not, we’ll have to come up with some other way of securing it.
There’s a cleaning lady that I use occasionally and she texted last night that she has an opening for Wednesday morning and I’m very excited! She does a great job but she stays constantly booked. I’m debating on taking the day off so I can be here. I trust her completely but I’m worried one of the cats might try to dash out the front door.
shoe Hopefully they can get the AC fixed fast - I cannot imagine how miserable it was with all of those ovens…
FCM Glad to hear the BIL made it through surgery and things are looking up. Also yes, you can collect SS/fed pension while living abroad (unless you pick a sanctioned country like N. Korea…).
boofae sounds like the rollout of the new way things will be organized at work went pretty well! Any signs of TM retiring over it all?
cookie what a neat, moody picture.
dicey welcome back from vacation! And how funny about the Mollie stuff popping up.
We should also get some blessed rain today, I was really missing it! While I was lazing in bed thinkin’ odd disconnected thoughts, I realized that we haven’t seen pics of the pups lately. I’m sure you have at least one of the threesome and I’d love to see it when you have time.
It did sound horrible, I hope things are fixed. A couple of years ago I would have said words like OSHA violation, but I’m not sure if that’s a thing anymore.
That sure does sound familiar. I know that a couple of mumpers came down with it a few weeks ago and at least it seems fast. Ginger ale did seem to help my stomach a little and wasn’t too horrible if it came back up.
Do schedule your shots soon. COVID is on the uptick as well. I’m fairly sure that what we have ‘enjoyed’ wasn’t either of them, nobody reported respiratory symptoms. Its just another bug that’s running around.
I checked. Your pension has different rules than mine, but mine would pay out at the same rate in I was out of country. SS would also pay out at the same rate, but that is backed by the federal government so I’m not making plans for its continued existence in country or out. If you are considering such a thing, start moving your money offshore now.
I’ll get in an earlier-than-usual Mumper check-in and hopefully not compose a tome for a change.
Weather continues with 59Ferrets to start out and rising to 61F for a high for today, with continuous drizzly rain. Good for the trees and recharging the waterways. I’m reveling in it.
metal mouse, I could not live where you live! That sort of heat and humidity just does me in.
There seems to be a movement afoot by corporate Amerika to make anything silly homeowners may wish to attempt to DIY as inhumane as possible. I was on the cusp of fixing the handle in place with tape so I could fiddle with the damn minuscule wrench while upside down and unable to really see anything – and that was with a flashlight stood on its end for light. My eyes ain’t the greatest anymore. But the wrench slipped at last into the screw recess and I was able to tighten the handle back into place sans tape. Then repeat the ridiculous process on the opposing side. That sucker isn’t going to fall off again anytime soon, though!
Well, you may not have the peppercorns to be a spice salesman, but I still think you are anise person. (There is probably at least one Mumper who is urging on the coming of next Monday and a new MMP, so this nonsense will stop. )
I, too, am at the tail end of the Boomers, and my slang is more Boomer. But what’s listed in that table is not how we talked! Groovy, man! Like, I’m hep. Like. What’s listed in the table is much more how my parents talked.
**red, I’m so happy you got some normalness! May it continue to grow and become your, uhh, new normal!
Oh, shoe, what a misery at work! I’d send some of our cool weather your way if I could. Sometimes a cool shower is exactly the right thing!
And likewise.
swampy, enjoy Eggs Up and hopefully the little ramble, too! A great way to start a day!
You’re miles ahead of me on phone knowledge, then. I’m catching up fast, but yeah, still creepy! I’ve made a point of trying to learn at least one new thing the phone can do each week. Sometimes I just… stop, 'coz maybe I’d rather not know.
I’m the same. I’ll take them if my doc can make a compelling case to do so, but not otherwise. She was trying to coax me onto a blood pressure control medicine at my last visit, despite having earlier pronounced that my blood pressure was “fine”. I said, “If or when it becomes an actual problem, I’ll take the medication with no argument, but till then…”
Good luck with your potential move to Canada, j-bats! I might have the same situation in my family, but I think I’m too old to make such a shift now. Plus the exchange rate when if the dollar crashes, I doubt I could afford to live there. But I wish you all the best! I have several friends who are pursuing the same course.
Happy belated birthday to Zoe, taters! And I hope Mr. taters feels better soon. Those symptoms sound unpleasant. It’s a bad flu season around here so far, so maybe that? And what a thoughtful gift for your daughter! She will love those ornaments.
Congrats on starting the spiro, Mollie! I have a friend who began her journey same as you, when she was 82. It went fine, and she is so much happier now.
Wise words! Life can’t always just be about responsible drudgery.
JtC, I’m glad you are feeling better! Being sick just sucks, and you already have enough to deal with recovering from your recent surgery.
I discovered I have a lovely stretch of unencumbered days from now until Tuesday, and I plan to take full advantage. There are a lot of things around here I’d like to work on before the rains arrive in earnest. I’ll do what I can, then farm out the rest of a handy person. I think I have a bead on a new one who comes highly recommended. I’d better nail him down while he still has some openings.
I got my butt out the door early for berry picking this morning. The blackberry season is now in full swing, so the picking was fast and easy. Probably a couple more sessions will get me to my goal of about 20-25 cups. That will be enough for jam, at least one pie (maybe two!) and using frozen for the year.
Breakfast was a burrito made with a whole wheat tortilla, sausage, cheese, egg, peppers and onions, topped with a skiff of sour cream. Some chunked cantaloupe alongside. I picked a really good one at the farm store last week, and now it’s chunked up, it can stop stinking up the refrigerator! I love cantaloupe, but I sure get why it’s called musk melon.
There will be time spent doing nuttin’ today, too! I may even finish a NYT crossword!
Howdy Y’all! We had an internet outage this afternoon, up til a few minutes ago. Pearls were clutched! Faintin’ couches were fallen upon! However, now all it right. I did candle and other duties this mornin’. OYKW changed the hymn board all by himself. I was so proud! Then we were bears who brunch at Eggs Up and took a little ramble before headin’ back to da cave where upon we learned of the internet outage. So we accomplished nappage and day drinkin’. It’s been rainin’ off and on for the past hour and a half and TWPTB say there are tstorms in the area, but not here.
MOOOOOOM glad BIL survived his surgery. Hopefully voice synthesizers have improved a lot by now. As to the meds, I suppose we must do what we must. Still don’t like takin’ meds, but I do.
Taters I do so very little by snail mail these days. I have some forever stamps that I have had, well, forever. Whenever I do need one, I actually have to think where they are. Sometimes that’s a kinda long think before I remember.
Mollie you are a good parent to get Squeaky his snack so he doesn’t have to stand in line. I can’t remember the last time I was at a high skool football game. Maybe early eighties.
Nuts sometimes the brain needs a break. My brain is on permanent break these days.
MetalMouse the sticky bun had pee-kahns and you plan on a 'nanner. Pee-kahns and 'nanners are healthy. Thus, healthy breakfast!
Dicey glad y’all had a good vacation. Also, one cannot have too many fried green maters.
52 somehow doin’ a bunch of chores seems appropriate for Labor Day. Hope it all gets done.
Thanks for the sympathy. I’m really sorry I missed my torture sessions, I’m starting to stiffen up again.
The funny part is that the last time I was sick was before covid, so I didn’t remember what I needed to feel better.
It’s not surprising that this happened, though. I’ve been hanging around in medical offices and around people who were recently in the hospital.
I wanted to tell you how much I admire your bravery. I’ve always been afraid to toss the allen wrenches and have a 50 year supply in a box in the hall closet. They never get used or looked at because Hubs has full sets of good quality allen wrenches in cases so those are the ones we use.
I seem to remember your folks living in Arizona? or was it Los Vegas? If you are going to AZ, if you travel from Skyharbor to the Cordes Junction interchange (its where the freeways split to go to Prescott or Flagstaff), please take a few pictures of the top of the mountain. They started a big road widening project a few years before we left and were taking off the top of the mountain when we did leave. Every so often Hubs and I will wonder how that is going.
We used to leave the fuzzbutts locked up on the room with their litterbox despite trusting our housekeepers to not let them out. They were usually hanging out in their usual spots when we got home.
So we got a little rain today and more is forecast this evening. This weekend looks to be lovely and oddly enough the traffic on the highway is lighter than a weekday. High gas prices are good for the environment!
Work went waaayyyyyy long. 2 carts of irregs that got dropped off by the 200 slide that were untouched(including Next Day Air ), plus the usual chaos. Plus MSG not only didn’t scan the Known Closed stuff, you mixed it in together with the in building stuff. I was there till 2:15p.m.(100F temp), and it was 3:15 by the time I got home from the grocery store. Obviously I got an earful from Spot. But he has forgiven me, and is currently alternating playing with a silver vine stick and a piece of cavatappi I dropped. I’m going ahead and doing laundry, having dinner(salmon, wild rice blend with 'shrooms, and bacon Parmesan spinach) and an Aviation for cocktails. Then taking an uninterrupted nap.
I could go for some boring at work and < gestures everywhere >.
But yay for BiL!
Weather App is obviously a Brown employee.
Coma would have been nice. He was doing Supreme Ultra Zoomies.
Looks positively dystopian. But < gestures everywhere >
Exit strategies are good.
We get a lot of letters going to the State Employees Credit Union that have old school hand written label, instead of a computer printed one. It’s very 20th Century.
But have you left the building?
If they tell me they are ova spice puns, it will just egg me on to pun even more fowl.
But that means you’re halfway between “settled back at home” and “about to go on holiday”
We’ve been doing a jigsaw puzzle called Did you know?. It has an oddly worded “fact.” It’s illegal to own just one Guinea Pig in Switzerland. So, does that mean it’s okay to own two or three Guinea Pigs in Switzerland, or is there a total ban on the critters? I don’t need an answer fast.
NYT puzzles are a bit glitchy this week. They’re trying out bonus puzzles that are quicker, and they’re a bit slow on telling me which ones I’ve already done. They keep changing the order in which the puzzles are shown, just to throw a rubber chicken at my old brain. It’s, um, puzzling.
The treasurer for our Home Owners Association (it’s just one street) is moving away, so they needed a new treasurer. Mrs. Nott, a retired CPA, had expressed interest at some point, so Poof! she’s the new treasurer. She wasn’t busy enough selling purses and jewelry on Poshmark.
Oooh, this I know…or read it somewhere on a dubious internet site. They are creatures who need to have at least 1 companion, elsewise they get depressed.
Was good early out day, I’m loving this 4-9 hour days and a 4 hour day work week. I’m currently (heh) fighting a malfunctioning GFCI outlet in a new junction box. Damn thing won’t go click. And now that everything is done up neatly there is very little room to maneuver. I fear I need to re-do my wiring with more slack. But that’s an issue for tuesday.
Add your spuds and onions, along with some mushrooms, barley, beef broth and tomato paste for beef stew.
Have you considered taking them to the scrapyard for salvage and donating the proceeds?
I didn’t get pee diddley damn done today. I only got a couple of hours of sleep last night, and combined with the recent restless nights, I took a nap after breakfast, then every time I read a couple of paragraphs, fell asleep again. I needed it.
No need for such drama, the fix was already in place before I arrived today.
Isn’t that an insecticide powder … ??
As a lil’ treat to cheer up my sad self, I spent on a boba (tapioca bubble) tea on my break. They asked if I wanted it hot or iced.
Me, sweating like a sinner in church: “NOT HOT, ICED PLEASE it is way too humid for hot tea right now.”
In honor of S.M. birthday, Alternate Manager brought a big pan of her homemade Semi-World-Famous ™ raw veggie “pizza” birthday cake. She makes it every year for S.M. and it disappears FAST.
So, plz tell my mommy I ate healthy today!
Hell, at least I ate … between the humidity, the AC glitch, and my sadness/regrets/memories, I have not been eating much lately.
Okay, two treats, because with the heat & the I knew there was a slim chance of me cooking anything, so I have a tray of sushi awaiting me, too. A tuna/mango combo, some salmon, and { fancy alert! } flying fish roe.
I’ll be eating ramen & beans for a while, but Sad Shoe decided a lil’ treat was in order.
