(Old) Flyboy’s Birthday🎂in the new MMP~

Ah, thanks. I did a quick search and it looked like it might be Johnny_L.A, but it
seems there is also a user called @flyboy !

Happy anniversaries all round !
:cocktail::champagne:

Good Mornin’ Y’all! Up and caffeinatin’. YAWN ‘Tis 71 Amurrkin out and cloudy with a predicted high of 87 and mostly cloudy for the day. Hopefully we’ll get some more rain today. We had three marvelous afternoon/early evenin’ tstorms yestiddy. Could do with more. No big plans for the day, so sloth and general overall uselessness it shall be. Sup shall be leftovers from last night’s sup.

Now I need more caffeine and to feed rumbly tummy. Then, onward into the day! Rah.

Happy Tuesday Y’all!

You seriously think anyone notices floor dust when those little piles of wrinkles are in the picture? They’re just tooooooo cute!

Well, groceries cost more, and I expect employees cost more, too. And, lessee, electricity is going up, and if they use gas stoves, there’s that… On one hand, I get it, but does one slice of toasted bread eat up that much profit that it can’t be included? No matter - we’ve scratched that cafe off our list. Honestly, I don’t expect it to last there much longer at this rate.

Suddenly, Bobby Vinton comes to mind…

The other thing that seems extreme - sodas are pretty much more than $3 no matter where you go, except maybe McD’s. Even for bottomless drinks, that strikes me as high - I rarely drink more than 2 glasses of anything with any meal. Oh well, what ya gonna do?

Me, too. I keep shoes and socks on till I’m ready to climb into bed. And if the shoes don’t have proper support, they get tossed. Life’s soo short to have sore feet.

OMG - I did this when FCD cleaned the gutters. Then I convinced him that $120 was a small price to pay to have Bob and his assistant come clean our gutters for us.

I think we’ll have a really nice day for the picnic, tho probably no pool time, since the high will just be 80° and the water is still quite brisk. Last night, we started gathering all the stuff we need to take, so this morning we just need to put the perishables in the cooler and load the cooler into my car.

But first, I need to shower and dress. So off I go. Not sure if I’ll be able to check in today until we get home - we shall see.

Happy Tuesday!!

Heading down to the Stockholm Pie Company (WI) today. A nice drive along the Mississippi and about an hour and a half from here. Meeting up with the wife’s niece for lunch and some pie purchases. First time we found this place was in 2009, when it was a tiny walk-in place where you had your slice handed through a window. It has since expanded into the adjoining building and carries all manner of things and serves lunch. They also opened a second store in another town. The quality of the pie has not suffered, thankfully.

Mornin’ all. Shortly before 8am it’s about -50C/-55F outside here over the middle of the Gulf of Mexico, but there are just a few puffy clouds and it’s smooth. At home it’s a more reasonable 79/26 on the way to 93/35 later today.

Finally met my FO and we had an uneventful drone through the dark, leaving at midnight-45 and parking about 215am. Yuck. He used to fly night cargo and quit that stuff hoping never to do this shift again. I told him it was real rare.

Had a choice to waste 45 minutes getting to a hotel and sleep for real, maybe, depending on how I felt, or crash in a recliner and take the early ride home. I chose door #2. My young friend had had a much worse few days than I had and chose door #1 for himself. Good luck sez I and away we go.

Had a long walk through a ginormous terminal nearly deserted other than floor polishers & vending restockers to get to our rest area. Got about 90 minutes in the recliner, 75 of sleep, in the over-airconditioned empty room. Then time to head up to the gate & hop on the plane. Dozed there off and on for another 90ish minutes and here we are. Feeling OK now, but I know that is very thin ice. At least between all the sleeping in chairs, my neck is really cramped and sore. It’ll recover.

Happy pinicking there FCM.

Sounds like a suitable meal for a suitable celebration there Flyboy.

And Doggio scores some overtime. Yaay!

Cheers all and happy whichever-damn-day-this-is!!!

Please let me know if you do. Do you drink beer?

I will and only occasionally and seldom more than one Coors Light.

Good morning all, woke up at 3:30am and promptly rolled over and went back to sleep until 7am. Not much on the schedule for today, probably do need to clean the bathrooms at bit and get over to the gym for pedaling nowhere, but there is little chance of rain and the high should only be 80F, so a good day in the neighborhood.

Pilot, glad you made it back safe and (relatively) sound.

Cookie, looked up Stockholm Pie Company (I often look up eating places you folks mention, because the food looks sooooo good…).

FCM, have a fun day picnicking; you’ve earned it. And I usually order sweet tea at restaurants here instead of sodas, and always buy them when they are on special (note to self: check Kroger ad on-line).

boo fae, thanks for the details, that’s interesting, don’t know if professors here in universities have unions or work slowdowns like that. Most seem most interested in getting tenure, which pretty much guarantees them a job, as I understand it.

OK, onward into 2sday. Take care all.

G’morning, kids! Missed you all lots while I was away.

Conference was pretty cool, met lots of neat folks. Lots of presentations on very cool projects, very inspiring stuff… Which all served to cement for me that Tribal College Librarianship is super not where I want to stay. These folks are combination librarian-educator-activists, and it seems like a constant energetic push to innovate and conduct outreach. I lack the ambition and extroversion for such things, my heart is in the boring nuts-and-bolts maintenance and development of library collections. Still - one thing I heard over and over was that a year as a solo librarian at a Tribal College is worth three years of experience anywhere else. Many people said that a stint at a Tribal College let them write their own ticket to whatever other job they wanted. So that’s cool.

And on that note - I also made a couple contacts with knowledge of that Really Cool Job I’m interviewing for on Friday. I learned that my intuitions were correct - these Senior Librarian positions are very rare and much-coveted. It is likely to be an extremely competitive hiring, and my recent graduation date and relatively little supervisory experience will definitely count against me. However… The people I talked to were amazed that I am getting an interview at all. The hiring folks must have seen something in my resume that they liked. It’s also possible that they simply don’t have any internal candidates with the asked-for experience and interest in the job.

So I’m really in the same boat as before: It’s a huge long shot, but there is a chance! I did learn some useful organizational-history-and-culture stuff that’ll help me tailor my interview a bit.

A very happy birthday to all y’all birthday folks, and lots of love to the rest of ya!

For darn sure make sure the interview has an opportunity to say great things about the cool conference you attended and all the energy & enthusiasm. Maybe not so much the details. But knowing you’re pursuing industry-level networking, learning new stuff, etc. says a lot about your attitude. Which attitude is the thing that’ll get you hired.

Good luck!!

We moved the boat on a very calm morning and tied up in one of the transient slips that will be easier for passengers to board from. FCD is washing down the decks because he’s a tad OCD. I unloaded our stuff from the car to the picnic table. Free Wi-Fi, so I’m glad I brought my tablet.

One more guest dropped out so Daughter is bummed. I hate when people do that. I know stuff comes up but it still makes one wonder.

Think I will read for a bit.

you hide the ice cream in a disliked food wrapper. to hide it from me just put it in a frozen broccoli bag, won’t touch it.

Exactly! I couldn’t handle it at all!

SenBoy’s class is going on a two-day 40-km hike (25 mi "Merican) mostly flat from the Pacific Ocean side to the Sea of Japan. (The third day is coming back by bus.) They will sleep under the stars and carry everything they need. Well, most of what they need. Some of the food gets carried somehow I’m not sure. But they all have backpacks, sleeping bags, raingear, etc. SenBoy’s comes in at 8 kg (17 lbs) including water.

He gets really worried about tiny details so we’ve been putting things together for a couple of days, he obsesses about everything. With SenBoss out of town, it takes a lot of patience. Normally, we take turns putting up with his stress and helping walk him back from the edge, but this was all my turn today.

I had a great day teaching. I’ve been teaching one high school junior since she was in third grade, so eight years? In Taiwan and Japan, medical school is seven years and they enter out of high school. It makes the competition very intense. She’s got seven months before the big tests and I’m working with her on writing essays. She’ll have to write an English essay. English essays are very different than ones in Chinese or Japanese so it takes time for the kids to learn and mostly they don’t get good instructions from their English schools.

I’ve been fortunate to help a number of students get into top ranked schools by having them learn to restructure their essays. We spend forever learning how to write clearly.

She’s got summer vacation coming up and was lamenting the fact her younger sister gets to relax this summer while she has to study. So it was time to roll out the pep talk from a coach! Crunch time! This is where we separate the women from the girls. I always get a lot of mileage from this commercial. You’ve got to outrun your competition:

There’s nothing like watching a student’s eyes light up when they understand the plan and resolve to carry on. Children need adults to believe in them on a gut level.

One of my seven grade boys has been silent in class all year, and takes a lot of coaxing to get anything. It’s finally come out that he loves fishing so we’ve got something for him to talk about.

Damn, all I prattle on about is my kids and teaching.

Good morning everyone.

It’s 59 degrees and cloudy, with an expected high of 71F and partly cloudy skies later in the day.

I decided to take another day; my back is mostly improved, but I’m dog-tired and slept late today. The last time I looked at my alarm clock, it was 2:30, and the alarm went off at 3:15. The thought of trying to work with so little sleep seemed overwhelming today. Usually, I’d plod right along, but I’m burned out, and my GAF tank is empty right now. I’m sure I’ll be back to normal tomorrow.

I’m enjoying the peace and have the sprinkler going since I haven’t watered the lawn in the last couple of days. Polar follows me every time I get up from the chair, but yesterday and today, he’s been more himself. That vet visit took a lot out of him, but yesterday he was very vocal about lunch AND dinner time. It’s always good to see that.

Not much else on the agenda other than unloading the dishwasher.

Home from Shift #1, naptime before Shift #2.

Got to irk, down into my cave, and was met with a Happy Birthday banner and a four-pack of Monster Zero Ultra.

That’s very interesting, could you say more about the differences?

My daughter has a business trip today to my favorite town name: George, Washington.

JtC, I told her the latest GG stories, and she had a good giggle. She said even her negative-brain-cells Nebelung can figure out a puzzle ball. I could hear the pity in her voice. If you ever start a GoFundMe to buy him some brain cells, I’m sure she’d donate.

To be fair, I didn’t think to ask him at last week’s appointment if the recommendation to walk was still in effect now that it looks like a soft tissue injury. I know he’s right about moving an arthritic joint, but I’m not clear on best practice for other conditions. I checked him out when I first saw him: Yale undergrad, Harvard Medical, residency at Walter Reed, etc… :woman_shrugging:

I don’t like how doctor appointments are all so rushed these days. It’s part of corporate medicine, I guess. Gotta pack in those boxes moneymakers patients. My GP isn’t like that, but he has no corporate overlords.

Pilot, hope you got through the trip without any more headaches.

My fingers are crossed, but whatever happens, you can be proud that you made the cut!

They do if they work in public colleges in states that allow unions. A lot of people think as you do, but tenure doesn’t guarantee a job. It just means they can’t be fired without cause. The few teachers at my school who got fired were all tenured. Full-time faculty are getting more sparse, as colleges hire adjunct faculty, who are, on average, paid less than minimum wage and don’t get benefits or tenure. (My ex was a college prof, and I was adjunct.) BooFae, is that how it is by you re: adjunct faculty?

Nowhere sounds pretty cool. People are always saying things like, “Where can you get a fun job that pays well? Nowhere.” and “Where can you get a great chocolate malt? Nowhere.”

the party continues!

Very good advice, pay heed. Literally worth it’s weight in gold.

Also excellent advice, sensei, you’re right up there with pilot!
