(Old) Friends, Romans, Penitents, Lent me your ear: An Ash Wednesday MMP

FCM , is a pet door a possibility?

Ms Peach is scared of the doggie door. It makes flappy noises.

That it truly a doggio worthy pun.

JtC Very sorry that the search for dad’s origins has turned into a whole thing. It seems ridiculous to me that someone of your age (no offense), who has had a passport in the past, and life in this country needs to find such documentation to get papers.

I don’t know that we can do a pet door. Certainly not in the sliding glass doors to the deck. And not in the man door of the garage, as there’s also a storm door. the basement has french doors leading out - we’d have to replace them to put in a dog door, and that could potentially be an entrance for possums or raccoons. Otis must rely on his human staff.

Plus he’s a pretty big dog, which would require a pretty big door…

Is she any more sociable?

Pfffft - he had to be prompted to tell his mom. Those kids are rather peculiar when it comes to sharing what happened during their days. Don’t bother trying to find out what they learned in school… tho the other day, Tobias informed me that our sun is a star, so he’s learning something.

Now that we’re floating again, I’m hoping to see more of FCD hereabouts. There are a couple of big projects that will be done in the shop. And yesterday he realized that the heavy work table in the basement will be perfect for the new miter saw in the shop. Problem will be moving it, especially since the yard is soggy and muddy, and it’s an uphill slog from the basement to the shop. Even putting it on the cart and towing it with the yard tractor might be too much. Dunno if we can disassemble it. But it will take 2 strong people to move it by hand, and neither of the residents of this house are in that category.

Anyway, not sure what today holds. Tomorrow we’ll drop off Otis for daycare and grooming so we can go to Grasonville to check out boat stuff. Yeah, it’s primarily sailboat stuff, but some things are just generic boat stuff. We’re going via Waldorf to have breakfast on the way. And it’ll be a mild day before 4 days of rain move in.

As for today, I think I’ll make a grocery run as we’re out of milk and low on kitteh treats. Beyond that, we’ll just see.

Happy Tuesday!!

Not much, really. She spends more time on her blankie under the window now, and she does come to me for fuss sometimes so she’s a bit less anti-social with people. She doesn’t like ‘im indoors very much, he doesn’t get much response from her.

She’s also still hissing and growling at the girls. Cherry comes into the room quite often and gets up on a shelf where she can hide away and watch Muffin, but if she gets spotted then the growling starts. Muffin has run at Cherry a few times and moves too quickly for Muffin to get a punch in! Poor Blossom just wonders what all the fuss is about.

When my state went to Real ID, I had to write to the county where I was born in order to get a birth certificate. It was a somewhat simple process. Until then, I had been using a “ceremonial” BC issued by the hospital I was born in. During the wait for the new document, I had feelings that I did/did not exist.

My left hand is somewhat swollen, compared to the right. There’s no wound or bruise, nor any other apparent cause.

Rev. Jesse Jackson has died. He was prominent leader in the US civil rights movement.

Morning all. Two bladder alerts last night so I stayed in until after 7am. I think I’m going to see the ENT folks that did my hearing aid, that ear still is hurting on-and-off, sometimes sharply and I’d like to get a professional opinion on it. Outside of that and a little banking (my on-hand cash is now $2.63), not much else is on the agenda. Tried my first Honeycrisp apple this morning, it is good but nothing spectacular, I think I’ll probably stick to the Envy apples for the near future, but thanks for all who suggested their favorites, it’s been a fun month exploring them. 54F and we’re due to break 70F later today, so not too bad for February.

I don’t drink water; fish F*** in it" -attributed to WC Fields
More seriously, I do drink water and milk, but prefer my 0 calorie soda, I just need to do so in moderation.

JtC, I have a huge pile of old photos I got from my uncle and parents that I never have organized (they didn’t either). Probably will give me something to do in my 80’s…

boo fae, hope meeting day went OK (even I am not enough of an optomist to think it would go well).

swampy, I already ate my cereal when you reminded me it’s pancake day. Ah well, another excuse to spend time at the gym sweating calories so I can enjoy some later in the day.

FCM, I concur, a doggie door is not practical for a beast that size; and lovely picture.

And onward into the day. A good 2sDay to you all.

fcm, great picture of your guys. i love the lamp!

interesting about the maundy money. i’m intrigued that it is matched to the monarch’s age. seems a bit unfair. 20ish people got cut on the handover from elizabeth to charles. if they did that on the handover from george to elizabeth that was a cut in half! interesting…

orthodox types have forgiveness sunday, cheesefare. lent starts at sundown on sunday night. meatfare sunday is the week before. after sundown on that sunday meat is cut out of the diet. pretty wild calendar times.

so this year, the week of feb first you could eat anything any day. then back to regular no meat/dairy weds and friday for the week of the 8th. then meatfare sunday on the 15th last day for meat. then cheesefare on the 22nd and fully vegan until april 12th. usually on cheesefare/forgiveness sunday slavic ethnic churches have blinis, all types of blinis. much sweet cheese and sour cream.

Good morning, folks. It was 45ºF this morning. Chloé and I got our four miles in. She got to see her friend, a golden retriever named Roxie. Dinner last night was Penne alla Vodka. I used to think I did not like vodka sauce - it turns out that I do not like jarred vodka sauce. This recipe turned out nice and creamy, and I finally got to use my new ceramic coated cast iron Dutch oven. I’m looking forward to leftovers for lunch.

It being President’s Day, Squeaky and Mrs Magill had the day off. They were strategizing college tours. So far, they have UK, MTSU, UTK, Alabama, and NC State on the list. I’m rooting for that last one, State needs a third generation of Magill, they just don’t know it yet.

Mrs Magill and I will be spending our birthdays with my sister (our birthdays are all within a couple of days) next month. I need to tell my sister my situation, so Mrs Magill will have someone to talk to. I am afraid. I’m not afraid that she’ll reject me, if anything, she’ll be super-supportive. I just don’t like saying these things out loud. I get a pit in my stomach just thinking about it. I’ll discuss with my counsellor tomorrow. I think Mrs Magill is coming to terms with what’s going on. She watched Will and Harper on Netflix yesterday, and has suggested I give it a watch.

Many, many years ago, I worked out in RTP. I-40 was a close second to Atlanta for title of Traffic Hell. Never again.

Ancestry.com might help. IIRC, the trial membership will let you access birth records. The Social Security Admin might also be a resource.

Not really, no. Maybe I’m concentrating on swimming through the fog, so I miss it. Of course, I also usually make half-caf coffee, which helps. For the last year, though Decaf Dunkin’ has not been at the BJ’s, so this year, we’ll see what happens.

I’ll just bet that the last name you are using now matches the last name on your birth certificate. That makes a big difference.

I’m a woman and I changed my last name when I got married. To get my Real ID, I had to prove the ownership transfer from my father to my husband. If I had gotten divorced and remarried, I would have had to provide all of that documentation as well.

I had to have proof that I actually lived in the same house as Hubs despite my name being on the title. Because he didn’t think to put the utilities (water and electric) in both of our names (and why would he?), we had to have the water cut off and then open a new account in my name so I could have “proof” that I lived in the house I co-owned.

This is an excellent idea. He’s buried at the big VA cemetary in Riverside, CA. I might be able to find it there as well. Thank you.

I’m receiving social security and a government pension. I’m on Medicare. I have a state issued MMJ card. I pay state and federal taxes. The government knows quite well who and what I am.

Oh, I know what’s in Mom’s hope chest and my plan when I had to deal with it was to give the whole thing to the sister who’s getting it. I am fairly sure that I can survive without my 6th grade report card or my conformation certificate. There is over 60 years of pictures and drawings and certificates and all the detritus of a long a full life, all of which have value to someone, but not to me.

Thanks for the suggestion about Ancestry.com, I will look into them. The social security admin will not help. I have to be able to prove the relationship between us before they will even consider talking to me.

I’ll put out some feelers before leaving for doctor appt, but expect I won’t get much accomplished until tomorrow when I can actually focus on it.

Today is going to be spent mostly driving around with short stops to do things. Ortho consult, Aldi stop, Dispensary stop and Distillery stop. I also have several boxes that need to be dropped off at the high school library (the library ladies say that the same kids come in regularly for the “real” food I leave and all of them appreciate the granola bars) and at the woman’s shelter. Din will probably just be foraging because we will eat at least once while we are out.

I hope everyone has great days, be safe ya’ll.

Mornin’ all.

It’s 32F and cloudy. There is also a light dusting of snow on my patio chairs and the cars in the neighbors’ driveways. We’ll have scattered snow showers this morning, but otherwise it’ll be generally cloudy with a daytime high of 43F.

FCM, yay, the boat is back on the water! Sometimes kids just want to keep something extra special to themselves. I often felt that way as a little kid.

JtC, I was easily able to look up my Dad’s obituary, and he’s been gone a long while now. It had his place of birth.

Nellie, good to see you post. I’m glad Charlie wasn’t hurt.

Alrighty, time to finish loading the dishwasher and run it. You all take care of yourselves.

I’m the one who inherited all of the family photos going back generations. I’m still sorting.

Laissez les bons temps roulez!

Up, caffeinating, breakfasted and fixing to do KP. General houseirk and finishing up the grocery list is on slate for the day.

Stay safe and healthy y’all!

Via Ancestry, we were able to find a copy of Mrs Magill’s Great-grandmother’s baptism record, showing she was born in Quebec. Mrs Magill is hoping that might get her a Canadian passport thanks to that new law. (Assuming we read it correctly.)

Gung hay fat choy, y’all!

A Lenten message from a United Methodist. “Let today be the day you give up who you’ve been for who you can become.”

happy new year! this year is the fire horse. the 1906 san francisco earthquake happened in a fire horse year…

weird chair family thing. since 1966 we have had a boy born every horse year. one year we had a boy and a girl. she was the first girl in 25 years. i’m wondering who will have the horse boy this year.

Yeah… till tomorrow. One of the fittings/valves that allows water to be drawn into the engine for cooling is leaking due to corrosion. A new valve and fitting has been ordered and it should arrive tomorrow. They’ll pull the boat out, replace the fitting (it passes thru the hull below the waterline), then touch up the paint before putting it back in the water. I hate to think what that little adventure is going to cost. Tho it’s better than being in the middle of the bay and having the fitting fail, allowing water into the people tank.

Dammit.

I just pulled out my birth certificate - issued by the state of California in 1954. It lists Maryland as my parents’ birthplace, but no city (it was Baltimore.) I also seem to recall that FIL’s death certificate listed his place of birth. FWIW.

And Tobias is now sick with what Roxy had last weekend and SIL had yesterday. Wonder if we’re next. Double dammit.

So, how’s your day going?

I was back loading 200 Middle white today. Not horrible in and of itself, but the car for the4L route is always filled with trash(including a trucker bomb the one time), had a broken mind control dome and cargo bay light switch, and the steering column cover was ripped off like someone(the driver? a thief? Aliens?) tried to hotwire it. I told the one loader it was basically the singlewide meth lab of package cars. After work I got gas(5.747 gallons) and did my Aldi run($40 and change). Now it’s naptime(at least till Maintianence comes by for the filter cahnge and inspection.

TVCTPMO #1:boofae needs a Monday.”
TVCTPMO # 2 “She’s already had a Monday.”
TVCTPMO #1 “What about Second Monday?”

Considering what Otis did to the deer, a trash panda would jut be a snack.

I don’t have that, but I do have my baptismal certificate. I need to get a copy of my birth certificate to get a Real ID. But the whole thing is nutty.

Or on a three hour tour.

My lovely wife wonders if parents’ wedding certificate would have their birth cities.

I think I’ve said before that I ordered an updated birth certificate so it matched my current ID + my change of name decree with crimped seal.

Spend the extra $ for a passport. Your Real ID is not proof of citizenship. (Well, it does indicate citizenship in 6 states but not yours or mine.)

I found his obituary and it just indicates his state of birth, but that was an excellent idea anyhow. I think I will have more success now that I’m not focused on old hospital records.

I remember a lot of problems when I was a teenager because Dad wanted to get a passport and he couldn’t get his birth certificate because the hospital had burnt down. I don’t remember how that was resolved and I don’t want to ask Mom. She remembers some things like they were yesterday and other things are gone forever. It distresses her to realize that she keeps losing parts of herself, so I try to not bring it up.

Well, its time to head out. The kibble bowl has been filled and the water fountain is full. They should survive alone for three hours until its time to help the cat-sitter with her homework.

Have great days!

Mine, issued in California in 1995, does not list our birth cities, just states. DH’s birth certificate (Mississippi, 1962) only shows the states of his parents’ births. My own (Oregon, 1969) is the same on that subject. All my file copies are the official state vital records certificates.

All this talk of passports, etc reminded me to get stuff done. I made an appt with a lawyer to do my will etc. Applied for a replacement Social Security card. Looked up requirements for a Real ID and will get that next month. JtC what document requires knowing your father’s place of birth?
