(Old) Friends, Romans, Penitents, Lent me your ear: An Ash Wednesday MMP

Hi everyone! Happy Fat Tuesday and Lunar New Year!

It’s nice to come here and catch up on what you all are up to. I should do so more often. Mrs W and I are well.

The second half of last year was quite busy with work, but not so much this year so far. I’m leaving for New Jersey for my first job of 2026 on Monday. Was supposed to be three weeks, but it’s looking more like two now. We’ll see.

Anyhow, I am here with an ulterior motive. Over in the Celebrity Death Pool thread, some folks (including me) are getting quite worried about Baker, who hasn’t posted since January 28. (She’s the one who actually runs the game, and it isn’t like her to be absent for so long.) Does anyone here know her IRL or have any way to contact her outside of the SDMB? We all hope she’s OK. Thanks!

47F at 1130. Rain in the forecast.

Last nights dinner was a success. Our guests brought homemade corn tortillas and also flan for dessert. Sadie actually came out to check out who was invading her domain. She even let the niece touch her, which is a first. Talked a lot about Trump and his goons; the niece’s husband is usually very quiet during these conversations, but even he is angry enough now to join the fray. Anyway, after some venting, we moved on to milder topics.

Tired today, as I always am after we have company. It must be the stimulation or something and this may be an adrenalin hangover? Beats me. Anyway, today is pretty much a dead day, although we need a couple of things from the grocery.

Well, I have an ENT appointment tomorrow, have a little more cash in my pocket, and have had my second breakfast with pancakes and syrup, so I am happy and stuffed, so sweating time is definitely required.

And looks like it’s been a busy morning for the Mumpers, I’ll scroll and then roll to the gym.

I am rather glad I am not religious any longer, keeping track of dietary restrictions would drive me crazy.

Maus, discussing anything personal and private is something most of us growing up were discouraged from doing (IMHO) and it must be hard for you at times. But I’m sure they will be as supportive as we are.

JtC, I had to provide some proof on where I lived and a couple forms of ID, but I don’t remember all the other stuff you’re having to go through with where Dad was born. And some of those kids your feeding probably really need it…good on ya.

Lily, and a Happy Year of the Horse to you too.

FCM, it just never seems to end, does it? Wonder how the navies of the world managed (and still manage) to stay afloat. I have my Birth certificate in my safe box, but haven’t looked at it for years.

Pardon me, but a WHAT!!??

Wet one, good move, I did mine about 18 months ago and it’s a nice thing to have. And I have too look again, I may need a replacement SSN card too.

Wheelie!!! Long time no see! Bur more seriously, haven’t seen Cupcakes either, hope she is doing OK.

Cookie, sounds like a good night with family. Rest well.

And looks like time to gather the gym stuff together and head out. See you all this evening.

I googled that one. Not horribly dangerous if you’re not in the way when it gets thrown out the window by a trucker, but it’s gross. Let’s just say male truckers have ways of avoiding taking time to make stops at rest areas for biological needs.

Since you know the state of birth, send a form letter out to the county clerk’s / records office in each county requesting the birth certificate, providing your dad’s DoB, name, parents and explaining that you are not certain if this is the correct county. One of the things that I’ve found doing genealogy research is that over the years, county lines shift. Sometimes too, if it was a home birth, it’s registered in another county, especially in rural areas.

it isn’t easy. the majority of orthodox households have a calendar in the kitchen so you know what is happening food wise. there are a lot of moving parts, luckily they are not written in stone. what you do is up to you and your state of health. church sponsored food events will follow the rules, and scrutinize ingredients. as with everything, people are on a curve with the super scrutinizers on one side and the no biggies on the other side.

today we were on a cable hunt. don’t get me started. why can’t we just pick one and every electronic just use that cable. out of the hundreds of cables with various ends we have in the office; the one, very particular cable, was no where to be found. it will have to be ordered. something that should be very simple and done on the 13th will not happen for a few more days while we wait for a cable. a cable that has a 20% chance of not working how i t thinks it should work.

le sigh.

I love the Mump group mind. Suddenly this has gone from a tiresome chore to a treasure hunt with clues! Thank you so much for the suggestions. He was born in Kentucky and google says there were only 9 hospitals in the state in 1933 so there’s another place to look.

Thanks for the wonderful suggestions!

I actually have a special deal going on with the library ladies. They know which kids cry over getting a dozen eggs and always choose potatoes over snacks, so they now have a special spot for that sort of thing to be kept for the kids who really need it.

A lot has changed in the last year.

Go Sadie! What a brave lil girl! She wouldn’t be so confident if she didn’t have such nice slaves

Welcome back, I’m glad all is going well with you. I’ve run a few Secret Santa’s - check your DM’s.

My passport application.

Get your passport while you are dealing with your Real ID. Your Real ID does not prove citizenship, only that your ID has been verified so you can travel inside the US. You will have most of the required documents handy for your Real ID already and you will probably be at one of the few places you can still do your passport application now. Last year you could have done it a your library or at the county clerks office but those services have been cut about six months ago.

So, I’m having some real serious thoughts about my shoulder and the recommended surgery. Even with the arthroscopic surgery, I will still be in a sling for 4-6 weeks. (the controls for our bidets are on the right) That means no stitching, no carrying cats around and learning how to use a lighter with my left hand.

It will also require me to sign a contract with the doctor promising to take the pain meds on schedule instead of trying to tough it out. I do not like pain meds, I can’t control them and they make me stupid and slow. I want to be able to self medicate with weed so I have full control over my buzz.

Injections are an option, but the rotator cuff will continue to tear, I just won’t feel it as much and I’ll have to get regular injections for the rest of my life.

I think I’m going to just focus on finding out where Dad was born and think about the surgery later.

I know you were all waiting with bated breath, so it is with great pleasure I can announce that my garbage has been picked up. They were way late, but whatever.

Good lord, reading about the passport travails makes me a little nervous. I want to get one, but my mother comes from Germany and was not a citizen when I was born. She got her citizenship two or three years later. It’s ridiculous we even have to worry about this stuff. I have had a Real ID for years because it was a requirement for me to work on a military installation.

I have a valid passport. I read today that TSA will charge $45 if you don’t have a Real ID. This, as you may imagine, pisses me off.

…or a passport.

JtC, I won’t be permitted to lift over 15#, and at first, less than that, so no kitties to start with, after the hysterectomy. That’s for at least 6 weeks. If you want to get your surgery soon, schedule it for around April 20 and we can kvetch here together.

Ah, thank you. And ICK!!!

rocky, I’m with you on that issue, I have a cabinet full of cables and I doubt any two of them are quite the same as the others. (One of these days I need to haul them out and sort/get rid of them but today is not that day).

JtC, your call on the operation, I think the Doctor with the contract is just trying to avoid being sued, a commentary on our medical (mal) practices these days.

Taters, Hooray! on the garbage being gone.

I have both Real ID (Alabama driver’s license) and a passport, so I guess I’m good to go.

And nearly 6pm and I burned (according to the machines recording it) 1,700 calories today which is a new personal best, so need to replace some on them soon.

Where do you live? The federal holiday is still Washington’s Birthday, as is the holiday here in Connecticut

I think that would be more like a putt then a drive.

I had a passport once, but never used it. As it is, I’ve been to seventeen or eighteen other countries (depending on whether I count both England and Scotland or just the UK). And I’m not sure if I’ll ever leave this state again, let alone the country.

A bit of good news – cardiology’s scale and the one at my PCP’s office both said I weigh around 15 pounds less than I thought I did. On the other hand, the measuring rod at the PCP’s office says I’ve shrunk two inches in the last couple of years. :frowning:

Howdy Y’all! Shrove Tuesday was a success. Much pancakes, bacon and snausages were consumed. There was a large, for us, crowd on hand. I needed to unwind with an episode of All Creatures Great and Small when I returned to da cave. Now I am tahrd and feel a little sleepy. Tomorrow includes a doc appointment and a one p.m. Ash Wednesday service in which I get to serve. On the plus side, the early service is less attended than the evenin’ service.

But you’ve just got little bitty kitlets, both of them together probably weigh less than a gallon of milk. I’m fairly sure my doctor was talking about not carrying normal sized cats around, little bitty kitties should be a recommended part of recovery and PT.

We might be recovering at about the same time. I’m sure that I will be much more whiny than you though. I always am

I actually think that it is because I have been so clear about my avoidance of pain meds and he’s concerned that I won’t be compliant with his orders. I turn pain meds down at every PCP visit, why should he think he’s special?

When someone is in pain, their body tenses up and they don’t rest well. When someone in pain takes the proper pain medication at the proper times, their body can relax and heal.

Every time Hubs has had surgery I’ve set an alarm to be sure that he got his pain meds on schedule, I understand how important it is.

But its different for me! I don’t need all of those fancypants pharmaceuticals, nature has already given me all that I need!

Plus, I’m all tough and stuff.

My milkweed seeds arrived today and they are in the refrigerator. Native milkweed seeds in WV need to have a pretend winter before being planted. Once I get this batch started they should probably come back every year.

Monarchs aren’t the only butterflies that like milkweed flowers so here’s hoping there will be more butterflies next year.

I’ve been seeing Kinglets in our dead hedge and cheated by sprinkling birdseed over the wood. No nests that I can see from the windows, I don’t want to get too close and scare them off.

The cardinals have been back in front of the french doors again which makes everyone happy. The cardinals know that there is glass between them and George and will come right up to the glass and peck on it.

Oh, Hubs just tossed Jolene out of the bedroom and closed the door. That’s part of his foreplay, it must be whoopy time

Only 9pm but I’m tired and logging off soon, so this will be the late-night final. Not that there is much to report, have eaten fairly well and done nothing constructive in the evening, so except for getting up in time for the 10:30am appointment, nothing else is required of me. May work on a couple puzzles until Slumberland beckons. Still 56F outside so a comfy day all around.

Oh come now, it would be at least a wedge shot from the rough…

Herald, good news on the weight, Drs. scales in my estimation go heavy, since they don’t weight you in your birthday suit…

swampy, happy Ashing! And I did get some pancakes eaten today.

JtC, do I detect a certain tongue-in-cheek on your pain med rant? (and considering your final comment, sounds like tongue-in-cheek may be part of your near future…

And that’s all I wrote. Take care all and see you on Hump Day.

Up from naptime. Frequently interrupted by Maintenance moving through the building. and Spot needed comfort after people were in his kingdom. Dinner was chicken rice and beans with Hatch chilies and tomatoes. And a Manhattan

Good idea

Trucker bomb. drivers who can’t find a toilet sometimes use an empty water bottle. When they leave it somewhere and don’t pour it out, it becomes a “trucker bomb”.

It’s simple. if you eat a hot dog on Friday you go to hell, if it’s Thursday you’re good. Unless you’re Jewish and it’s a regular dog then you go to Hell. Unless it’s beef, then your good. Unless you’re Hindu, then you go to Hell. Unless you’re Peter and The Lord tells you to toss the dietary stuff, then it’s all Kosher.

My dad said that during WWII, he and two of his brothers (the ones too young for the service) used to gather milkweed pods for life jackets. By the time us kids came along, the milkweed patch out at Granddad’s was still there.

Sharing a bowl of popcorn with Nelson and doing my late evening drive by.

Up, caffeinated, and sheveled. Off to heave. Spot is laying on the kitchen floor asleep. And judging by the paw twitching, having a good dream.

Today is Ash Wednesday and the start of Ramadan. Happy suffering everyone!

Morning, mumpers! It’s currently 3c/37f with a predicted high of 4c/40f and cloudy. Weather app says “It’s fucking overcast, cold and fucking stupid outside.”

That’s the tradition, so when Charlie kicks the bucket and Wills takes over, there will be another significant cut in numbers. You have to do recognisable good works, and be nominated by your church in the first place, I have no idea how many nominations there are each year.

Today is my third Monday in a row, I have more meetings today :frowning:

Sadie is becoming quite the brave little adventurer!

Hurrah! I’m glad someone out there got something right for you!

Yesterday was not such a bad day, despite meetings getting in the way of actual work. We had some bins and bags delivered to the office for us to dispose of confidential waste. Since we’re moving offices soon, we have to get rid of stuff that’s confidential and can’t go in normal waste. Fun times!

I got home without out too much bother, did my evening chores and made something for dinner with chicken and chorizo. ‘im indoors declared it good, and said I could make it again  I was in bed at a reasonable hour too, and up when the alarm went off today.

The morning commute was not so great, the train I wanted to get on was cancelled and the 8am connection from Big City isn’t running due to problems on the line further out. I decided to get the bus from outside the station, my preferred route bus was absent so I had to wait for one that goes a different route that means a longer walk to the office. As a bonus, I got to watch six police officers from three patrol cars, and one cycle copper arrest a whiny thieving scrote near my bus stop.

Got to work and had just enough time for breakfast before the 9am dept meeting. I had to take my cup of tea with me as I was running late due to transport problems. Off to the pub tonight, probably for curry as well as beer.

Good Mornin’ Y’all! Up and caffeinatin’. YAWN ‘Tis 54 Amurrkin out and cloudy with a predicted high of 74 and cloudy. I have a doc appointment at 10:45 a.m. to determine if I am still alive and to reup the ‘scripts. I think it’s PSA levels time as well, although that might be in June. I know it’s a yearly thang. I am also servin’ at the 1:00 p.m. Ash Wednesday service. OYKW said he would go procure provisions all by himself this mornin’. How brave of him! Since it is the start of Lent, we shall go to the good local fish and seafood place for catfish fillets. This is not exactly penitent as the food there is soooooo yummerific. So it’s kinda penitent adjacent. We will go around 4:00 p.m. for geezer sup. That will earn us some RDOS bonus cred.

Now I need more caffeine and to feed rumbly tummy. Then I must purtify and don attire acceptable for bein’ amongst the great unwashed. This will be four days in a row that I have had to people. How unacceptable!

Happy Hump Day Y’all! A holy Ash Wednesday and blessed Lent to all who observe.
