Yeah, I never quite got fish as being a sacrifice. Even when I was a kid, it was $$ - maybe that was the sacrifice??
My Uncle Bob always said he knew all his sins would be forgiven because he never ate meat of Firday - ever. So the drinking and the gambling and the swearing and all that… Even his eldest daughter mentioned it after he died. Whatever gets ya thru the day, I guess.
We’ll be heading out shortly, dropping Otis off at the doggie day care/groomer, stopping for breakfast, then crossing the Bay Bridge. You probably won’t hear from me till late afternoon. Unless some ship hits the Bay Bridge while we’re crossing, but let’s not consider that.
Anyways, here’s hoping we find some cool boat stuff on our journey.
Morning all. Have broken fast lightly and will be seeing the Ear doc in about 2.5 hours, so nothing much doing until then. Another nice day, 58F already and getting to 67F in the afternoon with a 1-in-4 chance of rain tonight. Need to get garbage and recyclables out to the curb this evening so that will be my major duty. Outside of that, sloth and internettin’ (or slothy internettin’) will be the order of the day.
I never liked fish and lived on grilled cheese sammiches during Fridays of Lent.
doggio, thanks for the description (and ICK) and your recitation of some of the reasons while I am of the opinion that if God exists, He/She/They/It merely point and laugh at all the human religious faiths…my opinion only, of course. YMMV.
I remember Ramadan from my time in Abu Dhabi; us non-believers could eat, but it had to be in our office with closed doors in respect to the Faith. And forget about finding food outside your house from sunrise to sunset. But evenings were fun and Eid Al Fitr meant 3 days off work for the celebrations.
boo fae, ah, the adventures of commuting. Hope getting home is less stressful.
FCM, have a good day and hope the freighters steer good.
And that’s all for the morning missive, back once the Doc has peered into my ear. Have a good Hump Day all.
Morning, all. We went to church last night and ate pancakes and yummy, yummy hashbrown casserole. Squeaky was voluntold to help out in the kitchen, then Mrs Magill and I stayed late to stack chairs and set up tables for whatever they’re using the hall for today.
Fang called us last night on the way to church and filled us in on where he’s being assigned to now. He has been completely removed from his (former) battalion is is going to be a staff officer for Military Intelligence. His mother and I agreed that it sounds like this will be better for his career than where he is now.
My father then called us on the way home. He found out who had really bought his house - Scotty McCreery. My father’s friend is Olde Raleigh Money, and he had heard it through the grapevine. All my father knew is that he had sold it to an LLC out of Nashville. My sister did some digging and found this LLC does real estate for country stars, and somehow found out they had bought the house (the land really) for Scotty McCreery. So, if he owes anyone any money, I know where he lives.
Lent is on, and I’m swimming through the decaffeinated fog. I haven’t gotten a headache yet, but I keep stopping at the coffee maker. It’s cold in my office, and I would like something warn to drink.
It’s 33F and mostly cloudy outside. Our expected high is 42F, with a chance of sleet/rain/snow showers late afternoon or early evening. Besides the morning snow flurries yesterday, we had periods of rain, sleet, and hail.
Boo Fae, I do not miss commuting. I only had to drive, which was PITA enough, but I can’t imagine having to deal with cancelled trains and buses on a daily basis.
Fish was not expensive for us; we had a freezer full of salmon, trout, steelhead, and smelt. In fact, I ate so much fish when I was a child that I rarely eat it now. I’m really picky about it, too.
Not much is going on here. I may or may not leave the house today. I haven’t decided.
I was on 200 Bottom Blue today. Which was surprisingly light for a Wednesday. Of course the one driver had 500lbs. of weight stuff for one delivery, and 2 1000lbs. mattresses in a box for another stop.
Me, point to “allow 24-48 hours to recover” label on box when talking to the driver: “Does that mean the mattress, or you?”
At this point I would be actively trying to be kidnapped by the Fae.
Throw some cayenne pepper on 'em, that will make you feel penitent.
Well, salmon, lobster, and oyster used to be poor people food, so you ate such, and fasted to engender some empathy for the poor. But if you want penitent tasting fish, try lutefisk and hákarl.
The nearest Evergreen cargoships are near New York City, so you should be good.
fish is not allowed during lent. there are 2 days where you can have fish, wine and oil; annunciation and palm sunday. no meat, fish, dairy, wine, or oil on weekdays. wine and oil on weekends. nothing with a backbone. that does leave the insects of the sea, other shellfish, and mollocks. those are the super strict rules. seriously vegan. your heath, travel, and other things do impact lenten meals. i call it the “fruit, nuts, twigs, and bark” season. pb and j mostly.
as of tuesday morning, phila is officially in the “no snow cover” zone. after 18 days of 3" or more of snow cover, and 10 more days of 1" or more, the airport is a not much snow zone (which is where it is measured.). we have been super foggy/misty lately. we may get a bit of snow over the weekend!
35F at 1200, so much cooler than the last few days. At least the wind has abated. Wet streets this morning and we’ve had a couple of snow squalls blow through. We may get an inch, whereas the North Shore area could get a foot or more.
No planned activities today. Done the exercise and all the puzzles, so the PM will likely be watching something on streaming.
Well, I’m home and the ear problem is solved. Turns out one of the little conical ‘pads’ that protect the hearing aid stuff that goes in the ear had popped off and when I couldn’t feel it when it happened, I assumed it had fallen to the floor and would get swept up. Instead in buried itself in the ear canal and got twisted sideways, so when to Doc went in to get it…well, imagine a rasp being run across your most sensitive skin…in other words, not pleasant. But it is out, bleeding is stopped, and I’ve been prescribed some antibiotic drops for the next several days, but a small price to pay for getting rid of that discomfort. Came home to soup-n-sammiches and will consider if I want to go to the gym or not later.
Oh, and my seat covers for the car came. Thanks doggio, have no idea if they were within 500 miles of you, but Brown got it done.
Maus, I always thought “Military Intelligence” were two words that didn’t go together, but hopefully Son will prove me wrong. And fascinating story of your Dad’s house.
doggio, how does a driver handle a 1000lb or more package, or is that the responsibility of the person they deliver too?
rocky, glad the snow is gone, even if only for a little while.
And lunch as been gobbled, an apple and some pretzels are providing a snack, and then probabyl look to head for Walgreens (for the drops) and the gym (for the sweats). Take care all.
Holy schnikies! Just how big WERE these mattresses? And what were they filled with?
Are eggs allowed? Given that they are in most baked goods, they would be hard to avoid.
Sis is under the weather today (something she ate, so nothing contagious), so our day out is postponed until tomorrow. Meanwhile, I’m eating lunch and will do laundry this afternoon once I take Nelson out.
I’m sick (just a cold, I think; every once in a while my temp just touches 100, but no real fever), which is particularly annoying because ill-timed sickness has a tendency to cost me money.
Still waiting to hear from insurance about my car. Probably going to go on chat in a bit to see if I can get any kind of status update.
Cats are alternatively adorable and cuddly, and adorable and disruptive. I’ve tried to explain to them that I don’t have energy to deal with them right now. They keep explaining that they are cats.
The wife decided she’s craving Greek food, so we have meals being delivered in about a half hour. It’s not my favorite cuisine and not my favorite restaurant, but ordering it is easier than arguing about it.
At the gym sweating off the 1200 calories in lunch. Picked up my prescription on the way and will start it this evening. Otherwise a quiet day is contemplated after the morning adventure. Will get back to conversing when I get home.
No idea how many kilocalories were in my lunch. There was a little bag of Romaine lettuce that I chopped up, in the fridge. I cut up a not-large avocado and a small vine tomato, and put everything in a bowl with some Litehouse blue cheese dressing. It was good, but needed bacon.
Snowing like it means to stay around now at 1600. Freeway on-ramp is backed up way back and I can’t even see the entrance to the freeway, which is probably a half a mile away. Local forecast went from snow showers to “heavy snow”, so I guess that system veered to the south. Winter’s back, baby!
Home from lots of driving, but a neat boat junk place. Sadly, it was very wet and mucky and cold, and some parts of the yard were inaccessible because of standing water. We will return, tho!
Otis had a good day frolicking with Dolly, a baby hound dog (she’s about 8 months and a match for him in size and strength.) He also did a lot of running around and he got bathed and pedicured. And he’s crashed out on the floor beside me. We got lucky with this pet-sitter/groomer/kennel. And the owner lurves Otis.
Daughter, SIL, and Tobias were all home today, but she said they’ll probably all go back to work/school tomorrow. I’m waiting to see if Tobias infected us. As a precaution, I canceled my lunch date with my Navy friend for tomorrow. We’ll reschedule in a couple of weeks.
Had to google him - the name meant nothing.
OK, time to assume the recline position and relax. Even tho I was sitting for much of the day, my recliner is much comfier than the Santa Fe. So off I go!
