Up from naptime. Making baked fried chicken with cheesy potatoes, since they fixed the oven. The smoke detector is not happy with the chicken, and spot is staring at the lady in the smoke detector.
So yesterday there was screaming on the 200 Table, a lid popped off a tub of feed larva.
Half the sort table: < incoherent screaming and pointing >
Me: “For God’s sake, it’s just living things.” < cleans up >
I accidentally chopped one in half putting back in the tubs. Which raises an interesting invertebrate question. What’s better, being Darth Maul-ed, or being eaten by a lizard?
And it’s late in the evening, but no music is seeping though. Been gone most of the afternoon, first to the gym and then several hours at a local elementary school representing the local soccer league I’m associated with. Brought some stuff and a bunch of stickers I had left over from other seasons that we let any kid who passed by have. So it was 7:30pm before I got home to eat and am now relaxing prior to bedtime. Down to 78F which is the coolest it’s been all week at this time of night.
38 messages so I have my work cut out for me. Onward!!
FCM, glad the market provided sustenance without the accompanying poverty.
Pilot and others, I think things are working OK with me on replies, albeit I don’t like the look of the typing I am doing and watch it on the right side instead.
And sounds like modern technology went a litte FUBAR on you. Glad the Doctor bill got sorted out.
Sensei, that’s quite the remodeling project: looks more like you are tearing the house down and rebuilding it…
Bandersnatch (know it ain’t official yet but I likes it), sorry about friend’s timing conflict, at least it got worked out early. And a nice story, hope the room meets your expectations.
Oopsie, those plants look great. Enjoy the Expo.
Lily, hope the water heater doesn’t go down the drain…
doggio, life at work and at home is filled with drama…
rocky, that is an excellent idea to get kid’s gifts from museums and then as a bonus you got to meet the artist. You must be living right today, as my dad used to say. Hope the stormin’ wasn’t to bad.
JtC, my refrigerator has an alarm too, had it go off once or twice but I have behaved myself so it’s been quiet for quite awhile now.
Herald, hope you can get replacement hearing aids, I think you’ll be impressed on the progress made in the last 20 years.
And it’s after 10pm here and I feel ready for Slumberland, so just skimmed the last several messages. Will be up and refreshed tomorrow, so catch y’all then.
I did San Diego to Wilmington NC in 3 days, back when I was younger and dumber. These days, I don’t even like doing a 7 hour drive. Used to do a 12 hour drive girlfriend booty hookup, from NY to NC for a weekend. (Cue the pearls and fainting couches) I’ve driven all of I40 3 times. Oklahoma and New Mexico are put you to sleep boring.
Good Mornin’ Y’all! Up and caffeinatin’. YAWN ‘Tis 77 Amurrkin out and clear with a predicted high of 94 and partly cloudy. Looks like a nice day to be out and about for a while. After we feed and I get candle duty done, we shall ramble down a back road that will take us to the produce place. We will see what there is to see and possibly purchase stuff. We will take the main road back, which from the place to da cave is about a twenty minute drive. The rest of the day will be spent in high RDOS inactivities as is our wont.
Now I need more caffeine. Then purtification and the donnin’ of attire acceptable for bein’ amongst the great unwashed must commence.
MusicMan got his hearing aids from the VA as well. He wears them intermittently because he doesn’t need them for work.
That’s so awesome! So nice of you to do this.
My chair is… content.
Believe it or not, I slept until 6 today. Now Annie and I are hanging out. I’ll be getting ready and eating breakfast soon. Today’s PD is led by (I believe) the school principal. It shall be interesting especially since one of the topics is “expectations”. Hope I measure up!
Afternoon, mumpers! It’s currently 20c/70f with a predicted high of 21c/71f and rain. Weather app says “This rain is fucking trash.” It’s cloudy out there but not raining, the forecast is for Frankfurt and we are still 3hrs away. Our train has left Berlin, and we are going a different route to the one we took coming into Berlin.
Yesterday was fun, we museum’d and zoo’d before going to a restaurant that we heard about, then stopped off for a couple of drinks before heading back to the hotel to our bed.
Up for breakfast and showering, then we packed up and checked out before taking the U-Bahn to the main station. Our train left on time and we are heading back to Frankfurt for our last night before we fly home tomorrow.
So is I70 thru Kansas in the winter - miles and miles of flat white. Yeah, young and stupid when I drove from Lafayette, IN to Denver alone, straight thru, to visit a fellow sailor who was stationed there for training. She and I met in Memphis in 1973 and we recently met for lunch since she lives in Alexandria. At least that was an easier drive!
Speaking of refrigerators - I wish ours had an alarm, but it’s a pretty basic model, so no fancy stuff.
And speaking of water heaters, we had ours replaced just a few years back. The one that was in the house when we bought it was likely over 20 years old - we have no idea when the prior owners installed it. Plus we’d had a well replacement because the old one was sucking dirt, and who knows how much was in the old appliance. We done sprung for a good one - it should outlive us… theoretically.
I’ll be leaving for my bone density scan in about half an hour. Terrible night - I over-caffeinated yesterday, so it took forever to fall asleep, plus FCD was coughing up a lung most of the night. He really needs to see a medical professional, but of course, that won’t happen till he coughs up blood, maybe. I just have to stay out or it or we’ll argue.
Temp this morning is a glorious 70°!! It’s not even supposed to hit 80 today! I don’t know if rain came thru last night or not. Our rain gauge puddle is non-existent this morning. It’s overcast with a slight chance of scattered showers. After my scan, I’ll stop at Food Lion for some ‘nanners, and that’s as far as I’ve planned for today. Whatever happens happens.
Happy August (when did that happen??) and Happy Firday!!
Morning all. Got my 7 hours of sleepage in, have pilled and have had my morning apple. When I finish this I’ll head to the Kroger for the Firday shopping trip and come home.
Have my first soccer ‘jamboree’ for the U8 Boys tonight, we have 65 boys signed up, should see about 20 of them tonight based on prior attendance. Need to load up my car with pinnies (pullover colored vests to ID teams) and portable goals. So of course there is a 40% chance of rain today…figures.
boo fae, sounds like the trip was a great getaway. Hope the plane is on-time.
Oh yeah, and Nebraska is no better. Driving through the "heartland’ can be the most tedious things you can do (unless you fall asleep at the wheel, then it is (briefly) the most exciting thing… ).
FCM, happy scanning, and hope FCD gets a clue and sees a Doctor soon.
You will. Never doubt it.
OK, need to add some clothing and take my shopping list and coupons to the store before most folks awaken. Have a good Firday all.
The sun has barely risen, and it’s mostly cloudy and 55°F. It’ll be considerably cloudy this morning, with some clearing this afternoon, with a daytime high of 83°F. There is not a drop of moisture in sight for the foreseeable future.
We drove from home to just about an hour or two outside of L.A. when we took the kids to Disneyland, lo these many years ago. Had my husband been alone, he probably would have pushed through to L.A., but I convinced him to stop. He was an OTR truck driver, so he was used to long hauls. I don’t mind long drives either, and would rather get the bulk of the driving done in one go, if possible. It’s been a minute since I’ve driven out of state, although I have driven all over Washington in recent times. I miss those work road trips.
I also spent several weeks on the road with my husband when he was an OTR trucker. Yes, stretches of Interstate 40 seem interminably long and tedious. Iowa was also…flat.
FCM, I hope FCD sees a doc soon. I understand stubborn, though; my husband is the same way.
Lily, I hope all goes (went) well with draining the water heater.
Boofae, it sounds like you had a lovely trip.
Herald, I hope you can obtain replacement hearing aids.
Oopsie, I love the Lego plants! Brightens things up in your office! Which, by the way, is pretty dang nice for a “cube”.
The gutter guys came yesterday, but have to come back today, because they cut one of the gutter drainpipes too short and it didn’t have enough of a bend, or something. I was hoping to be done, but on the other hand, it’s in the front, so I don’t have to keep the doggos locked up inside.
So, now, other than hiring an electrician to wire the attic fan, we’re all done.
I’ve been keeping up with bad stuff happening to the agency from which I retired. (Still weird to say that). It’s not been good…at all. I am thinking of driving down to my former office to pay a visit and bring treats to the table named for me. Yes, there was a table called (My name’s) Table. When people other than me brought treats, they said they were channeling their Inner (My name). Anyway, I miss some of those folks, and I promised I would visit. I plan to reach out to one of my former peers there to confirm it’s okay and ensure someone will let me in, since it’s a secure building.
Other than the gutter guy being here today, I’m not sure what I’ve got planned. It’s funny, when the roofers were here, I felt trapped and wanted to go somewhere. Now that I’m free to go, I don’t want to. What is wrong with me? I’ll probably head out at some point. I need mulch.
Back from bone scanning - it took all of 15 minutes. For whatever reason, the scan was just of my left hip and my lower back - same as 12 years ago. The tech said it looked like nothing changed, so YAY BONES!!!
It was drizzly - still is, I suppose, but I’m inside, so I don’t care. I got some ‘nanners and fresh pineapple chunks at Food Lion. When I got home, FCD was just getting up, so I made him some breakfast. And I had a ‘nanner. I’m thinking chillage till lunch, tho I suppose I should do some laundry - it is Firday after all…
Mornin’ all - about 9am as I start driveling. A mostly clear and warm day with a rainshower nearby to remind us it’s the tropics. Balconatin’ was short as I got started just a bit before sunrise after sleeping in a bit. I’m evidently getting body time realigned to local time. Yaay!
GF called late last night to vent for an hour. She was supposed to come home yesterday but events intervened and now she hopes to come home today. She’s about frazzled. And physically exhausted. Poor thing. Mom is very sweet, but …
I had ranted a bit yesterday about some challenges with my banking & such. Here this morning the evidence is that 99% of the flail is behind me. Of course this always happens at the end of a work week so anything launched today doesn’t land until Tuesday. So I won’t know until then whether everything works satisfactorily. But I’m optimistic that I’ve got all the desired financial plumbing installed and most of it leak-tested. I certainly have enough pipes ready to get by with even if some other pipe(s) aren’t quite right yet.
That also leaves me casting about for anything that needs doin’ today. Seems like RDOS shall be the order of the day. Darn.
As to y’all …
Awww. That’s adorable. And will probably keep the dog from going nuts & wrapping all 4 paws around your neck from behind.
600 miles? The car’s barely warmed up. I know, I know, SWMBO’s get a vote too. An extra big vote. All of them in fact.
I’ve not taken any serious-long car trips since I’ve been single, but 12 hours in motion is about right, so 12.5 hours door-to-door total with three 10-minute fuel / pee / snack stops. Back when late wife was healthy, we’d do that together readily. 12 hours in motion at 80mph average gives just shy of 1000 miles. A decent day’s haul for a decent day’s work.
I might surprise myself with my lack of stamina were I actually to try a 12h drive now. Around Halloween I’m driving to Myrtle Beach SC from here which Google sez is about 10 hours. GF is coming along and we’ve planned to stop overnight at the 2/3rds point each way for a bonus overnight in fun places: Savannah GA on the way up and St. Augustine FL on the way back. So that won’t be much of a stamina test. At least not as to driving stamina.
That’s the ticket.
At first I was imagining that as a single combined dish. Which might actually work pretty well. I used to do a baked fried chicken using a paleo “breading” made from almond meal. Tres yummy. Combining that in a casserole dish of scalloped potatoes might be great, if a bit greasy.
Yeah. Some folks are squeamish about the strangest things. I can’t remember all the times I’ve said “It’s just poop.” And I wasn’t even a parent, nor was I talking about baby shit.
When you said you’d chopped one in half I had sudden thoughts of the sorcerer’s apprentice and the multiplying brooms.
ISWYTD. Hear it too.
The fridge at the condo in CR had one. I’d never encountered that idea in my life and was mystified at first as to the source of the beeping. And here between that place, JtC, and now you I’ve heard about 3 of them in 5 days. Nobody expects the Baader-Meinhof Gang!
@swampbearSwampy: Candle duty, produce stand, and a half-ramble? Gonna be hard to fit enough RDOS into the remains of the day after that busy agenda.
Oh yeah, one more thing …
Happy just-was Birthday to you Happy just-was Birthday to you Happy just-was Birthday dear SWAMPY Happy just-was Birthday to you
Sorta like the 12 days of Xmas song, I used to sing the 7 days of almost birthday song, then the birthday song, then the 7 days of just-was birthday song. Takes 15 days to do the full cycle. But you gotta take a very deep breath and sing really fast to keep to the meter when your line is “Happy just-was just-was just-was just-was just-was just-was just-was Birthday to you!”
It’s a LOT easier to type than to sing.
I have total confidence in you. I bet the rest of the MMP does too.
Ouch! Good luck w scans. ETA: Hooray for solid scans.
Sounds like an adventure. One of my bros did that job for about 2-1/2 years. The stories, oh my the stories.
Now you know why the dog or cat whines to be let out, only to start whining to be let back in. And vice versa. Over and over and …
It’s part of the RDOS transition. I totally get it; I’m still in it.
Hope the visit w former co-workers goes well, whichever day it finally happens.
Whelp, that took 90 minutes. Nice to be an RDOS with little to do. The early morning rainshower has faded without dripping on me. Seems like breakfast then beach are next in order. Shevelment later after the beach.
Cheers all. Happy what-remains-of-Firday to all. The weekend beckons!!
Sounds good. I was at the local science center ( What is a science centre? - Swiss Science Center Technorama ) last week and I may have spent a bit too much time at the temporary exhibit. They are renovating their lightning show, so I was looking at the scaffolding, etc. and thinking about all the work that goes into the exhibits. They have 6 Friday night events which are reserved for adults, with extra exhibits. I hope they do it again next year, because I wanna go!
Me too. Your boat is finally getting close to being ready for adventure and it needs a healthy crew!
Happy cake day!
And the first part is a bit more fun. Do you have a skip for everything you’re tearing out?
Definitely. Sometimes it’s nice to have a goal, because it’s easier to work on something when it has to be done and not “whenever”.
And there’s breakfast for Sunday. Thanks for the idea!
@Misnomer Nice windowsill decor. Really puts your stamp on your space.
I don’t know how many times I’ve read the word pinnies and just glossed over it. Thanks for including the definition!
Our fridge has an alarm. It goes off any time I do a big shop and have lots of stuff to put away. I find it easier to just leave the door open when there’s a lot to put away instead of opening it and closing it. At least it’s really easy to make it quiet as there’s a dedicated button next to the power button.
Happy Swiss National Day! Weather forecast said rain, but it’s been rather sunny and a bit gusty. Surprising there hasn’t been that much noise from fireworks. That’ll probably change after the sun goes down.
Everything’s closed today except the tourist places, so we got to sleep in a bit this morningMade an apple cake, went for a walk, made lunch (chicken paillard with green salad) and thinking about looking at my to-do list. Probably should drink some water as today I’ve only had tea, a latte and a beer. It’s almost 5 pm, so I can start cocktail hour early. Nah, first water.
I ran a program this morning, and it failed. It said the path was incorrect for a destination file. I wanted to experiment, but I wanted to protect the previous output file’s header. The plan was to save the header to a different file. But first, I’ll just delete these years-old files that nobody needs…
Nope. I don’t have permission to delete the files. My own files. In a folder that nobody uses except for me. Poking around, I discovered I could not manage other folders that only I use. IT is working on permissions, but the IT guy has to get permission from another IT guy to give me permissions. And I’ll have to make sure my programs have permission.
I need to figure out something for breakfast today. Maybe a bacon, over-easy egg, and cheese breakfast burrito with some Tapatio.

Happy Doperversary, FCM!
The other good thing about it being August 1? The end of summer is in sight!
The heat and humidity finally broke (after a few heavy rain storms yesterday), and today’s weather is rather un-August-like: it’s currently only 66°F and feels like it, with an expected high of only 73. There were continued showers overnight and again this morning, but I think the rain is done now – though it will stay cloudy all day. I’m totally fine with that. And the weekend forecast is great: mostly sunny with highs around 80 both days.
I’m very unmotivated to work today; part of me feels like it is/should be Saturday already. But, I’m forcing myself to get stuff done here and there (this “responsible adult” thing is for the birds!). And I’ll get a little break at lunchtime: at 12:30 I’ll be taking Bailey to the vet for Librela injection #2. I should be back home within an hour…then I’ll see how much I feel like doing this afternoon. Heh.
WifeBFF’s 65th birthday is later this month. It can be hard to think of something “good” to get for her, but this year I had the idea to give her a personalized necklace with the birthstones and initials of her husband and son. I ordered it yesterday, and it should be delivered the week before her birthday. I hope I chose wisely!
!
Today is also Yorkshire Day (I lived in North Yorkshire from '83-'85).
I have to agree with you about Oklahoma. I’ve driven it from the eastern end through about the middle of OK (different segments at different times).
My sister replaced the original water heater in her 1962 Sears kit house about 5 years ago. It lasted forever, but a wall had to be partially dismantled to put the new one in, since the house was pretty much built around the utility closet. She had to do some wall work when she moved in as well, since the washer / dryer nook was made for 1962 Kenmore appliances, which were more narrow than modern day ones. Officially, Sears didn’t do kit houses that late, but some were still available.
He rides tethered in a special bed on the shotgun seat, so no hopping moving around in the car to cause mayhem (he’s small enough to get down between my feet and !@#$ things up). I worked on an ambulance crew briefly during college and saw accidents where a dog survived the initial impact, but got scared and bolted into traffic to a bad end, therefore any critters riding with me are crated or tethered. Nelson is a good little road dog though. He’s traveled since he was three months old, so he’s used to it.
Up, caffeinating, breakfasted, bed stripped, a load of towels / sheets in the dryer and fixing to do KP. The only thing that I really need to leave the house for today is to go to the clerk’s office down the street to get my permanent handicap placard. I don’t always park in a designated slot, but some days, it’s the wisest option.
Nelson got all excited on our walk this morning; his buddy Blue is back! And he got to play with her! Poor baby was gone for a bit because of a custody battle between a couple who just split up. Her mom changed the locks and told her ex that he could come get his gaming system and clothing when he brought her back. It was good to see her.
We’re working a half-day today. I started at six, so I’m supposed to log I just got a call from the other IT guy. He’s going to see what needs to be done. … And now I’m on the phone with another IT guy. He was going to schedule me for 09:30. But I’m on hold now, while he checks to see if the guy who just called me is on top of it.
