Up, caffeinating, breakfasted and infused. Other than a quick trip to Aldi today, not a whole lot shaking.
Stay safe and healthy y’all!

Yeah, me too. Good thing I’m no longer working around classified materials…

PS - that’s a joke. I wouldn’t sell out for ice cream. Now, a sundae might be a different story… ![]()
Second load in the washer. I yanked up some of the weeds that I’d sprayed last week - it took a while but they finally died. Then I sprayed some more, including some poison ivy. There was grass growing in the gap at the front of the paint shed, so I yanked that out, too, and missed seeing a bit of poison ivy. I was wearing gloves, but I think a few leaves brushed my arm. So, since I was about out of energy, I gathered my tools and came in, then scrubbed my arm. Hope I wasn’t too late.
Lunch was FCD’s leftover Chinese - shrimp and veggies over crunchy noodles. Except after 2 days in the fridge, the noodles were no longer crunchy. But it was tasty, and I’ll add it to my rotation.
Laundry timer just went off - so the last load is about to go in. Onward!!
I’ve made an appointment with an endocrinologist that was recommended by the team at Cigna. I’m equal parts excited and saying, “Oh shit. Oh shit. Oh shit.”
Fed and exercised. Most puzzling is done, although the Saturday NYT is giving me trouble.
Had some rain this morning, which is nice. It’s only 73F at 1100.
I think we’ll have waffles for dinner with some sausages.
Baker, OMG I am so sorry about Mauser.
I lost my Bailey dog 11 months ago, and am still grieving: you definitely have my empathy. ![]()
Right now it’s 11:29am and I’m sitting in a hospital waiting room in Baltimore, while my 77-year-old father has a colonoscopy. The nurse took him back almost an hour ago; they’ll text me when the procedure is done. It was scheduled for 12:45pm with an 11:15 arrival time, but he gets paranoid about getting to the hospital so we were on the way at 9:45 when they called to say they could take him earlier! Yay! Right after this we’ll go to another building in the complex for him to get some blood drawn (not related to this procedure, and if the lab lets him), then we’ll go to Bob Evans for lunch. When we finally get back to his place I imagine that he’ll be pretty tired and ready to nap/chill, and I’ll be free to head back across the river and enjoy the rest of my day off (go to the grocery store, build Lego, etc.).
…that is, if I don’t drive the 20 minutes to a different hospital to see my brother, who wound up in the ER yesterday after a trip to urgent care for a persistent sore throat. He was diagnosed with thrush, and told to go to the ER after they discovered that his blood sugar and potassium levels were both dangerously high. At the ER his sugar level didn’t come down the way they wanted it to, so he was admitted. Dad called him from the waiting room here to check in: turns out my brother will be getting counseling this afternoon to discuss why he hasn’t been taking his type 2 diabetes medication.
That’s what I was afraid of: I did some Googling yesterday, and all of his symptoms – thrush, high potassium, super high blood sugar – are possible results of uncontrolled diabetes. He’d been doing well with it for a while; I don’t know what happened. I’m not judging, because we both watched uncontrolled diabetes wreck – and pretty much kill – our mother and that example wasn’t enough for me to make the changes I needed to (it took several more years, when my own lab results starting going off the rails). But we aren’t really close to begin with, and it will be hard for me to gin up any patience or sympathy if he brought this on himself…between that and wanting to be back on the interstate well before rush hour starts, I will likely opt out of going to see bro. Dad and I will check in with him again after lunch, though.
It was another long/busy week at work, and I’m glad to at least be ignoring all of that today. I’m glancing at email on my work phone from time to time, but the later it gets the less likely it will become that anything significant will happen. By the time I get back home, I’ll be able to stop doing even that. Which is good, because I’ll probably be kind of tired, myself: Dad wanted me to get to his place at around 7:30, so I was up at 5:30 and left the house at 6:30.
I won’t be too tired for Lego, though.
Today I’ll finish the Jaguar, then get started on the three new sets that were delivered yesterday:
Now it’s 12:10pm and I’m still waiting for dad to be done. Hopefully there’s only another hour or so to go. Meanwhile, I think it’s time for the NY Times Spelling Bee. I’ll return to my usual interactive ways this weekend: for now, yays/boos/hugs/confetti as appropriate!
Keep us posted.
There have been studies by sleep specialists who say that teenagers actually need to sleep in and will do better in school with a later schedule. One of my high classmates was a sleep specialist so she used to post a lot about it on FaceBook.
I’m excited for you and also fascinated and curious.
I‘m impressed. I bought two little Lego sets about 5 years ago - maybe even pre-COVID, and I’ve only done one of them.
I am so sorry.
Today was the last day of work before vacation. I’m supposed to hand off the house key to the neighbor, who said he’d be home this evening, but he’s not there. He’ll be back later - they never leave their conservatory open overnight. Watered the front and back areas and now the side area is getting watered. Did one load of laundry this evening, and we’ll do another tomorrow after we take our showers. We have way too much to do for a day that will get, again, way too hot.
We did stop in town and get some of the good chocolate to take with us - for other people to eat. Hubby noticed they have dark chocolate covered pistachio macarons, so we each got one to try. The place is expensive, and they are pretty generous with their free trials, especially if you have their membership card and spend money there. We will have to stop there when we get back - the pistachio is a limited-time offer.
I should start packing, but I think that will start tomorrow morning. I can’t think when it’s too warm. At least we’re getting some cherry tomatoes and raspberries before we go. The beefsteaks will be ripe on Monday or Tuesday. Hope one of the neighbors likes tomatoes.
FCD’s middle bro was the same way - he always knew better than the doctors… till he started having heart problems and lost his sight, then dementia set in before he died at 66. Is it denial? Fear? Stubbornness? Obviously it can be deadly. I hope it’s a wake-up for your brother.
Laundry is done. I made a big cuke-onion salad and a big batch of cole slaw. So there was some productivity after lunch. I need to copy down a recipe for supper - by HAND! For some reason, I can’t create a PDF to print out. How medieval to write on mere paper…
Ms Peach is finding bad things to chomp on. I broke a glass the other day and thought I had found it all…nope, she found a like 1/4"x1/2" piece. Next was one of those bread bag closer tag things. I’m sure they have a name, but I can’t find it in my brain right now.
Thunder in the distance. Had a nice drencher a little bit ago, I foresee another one soon. It’d be nice if it actually cooled things off.
FCM How primitive, having to use pencil and paper. There ought to be a law.
Finally Friday! And thankfully shaping up to be far less eventful than yesterday. The cop has been texting today about the break in and sent me a picture of a car. I’m 99% sure that was it - they searched Flock camera images from yesterday. Which makes me very conflicted because I’m glad it can do things like that, but that level of surveillance is also troubling. I did send the photo along to a couple of neighbors so they can keep an eye out.
I’m supposed to meet some friends later tonight for pottery painting and then dinner. I just hate that it’s a 45 minute drive away and that I’ll be getting home late. But I bailed recently so I don’t feel like I can miss again.
Taters sounds like a good visit, and that’s an impressive number of critters to spot!
Mollie how exciting!
Oopsie sorry about your brother - it’s hard watching someone you care about make terrible choices.
I’m jealous of the Europeans headed to Amsterdam and Belgium.

They make special knives for one-handed soldiers?
Another boot camp memory: One of the company commanders would hand his cup to a recruit and tell him to go to the CCs’ office and get him a cup of coffee – the fun part being that if said recruit just asked for “a cup of coffee” whoever was in the office would fill the cup with used coffee grounds to be delivered to the CC.
The magic words were “My company commander has sent me for a cup of freshly brewed, hot, black, liquid refreshment from the coffee pot, sir.” Amazing what can stick in one’s head for 44 years, isn’t it?
Lady SCAdian’s recipe for truly authentic Irish stew: Place the meat and potatoes into a pot of water and boil it until you can’t tell which pieces are meat and which are potato . . . .
But only a half-hour each day, rather than 24 hours.
What’s that?
I ate a Milky Way for you – did that help?
It would have to be at least two Farrell’s pig troughs (a double banana split, with six scoops of ice cream, with two bananas and toppings) for me.
How long does it normally take for one?
Why does the big X-Files set include an underground bunker beneath a forest?
86 Ferrets at 1500, out of a predicted high of 80. The heat advisory that was supposed to end at 2000 has been extended to 2000 tomorrow (low tonight 72, high tomorrow 79). Yippee.
Mine was about 4 hours from going back to recovery from anesthesia. But the nurses had a really hard time actually getting a needle into a vein, 4 stabs. Not sure why, I’ve got pretty prominent veins.
Howdy Y’all! We got shorn, duties got done and we brunched. Neither of us was up for a ramble so we came back to da cave. I took some cream cheese and butter outta da fridge and then achieved nappage. Upon wakin’, I made an Eyetalian cream cheese cake just cause. Later on we shall eat cake. For now, though, 'tis time for some stoopid teevee and to ward off malaria.
And to think, all the nonsense around the Epstein Files could be resolved with a gallon of good-quality Rocky Road or Mint Chockie Chip and a few spoons.
May your appointments go well!
Denial and fear play a lot into it. It took 3-4 years after my diagnosis to get my poop in a group about it. Unfortunately, it did do some kidney damage. Fear of lifestyle changes and denial that they are needed are real.
Sounds like this summer’s salads at my house. With my sucky immune system, lettuce is off the menu for the duration, so cabbage and cukes have had to fill in the gaps.
I made it to Aldi and back shortly before the rain started this afternoon. It’s still raining with a few thunderboomers thrown in for effect. Now for more RDOS.
Evening all. Got the gym work out of the way fairly early so I could do some youth soccer work this evening, but the rains came and washed that out, so maybe I’ll at least get my new chair out of the box, even if I don’t put it together yet. Big Bowl O’Salad will be dined upon shortly. Temperature is down to 74F already, so the rain did bring in some cooler weather.
Taters, yeah, bison will come right up to vehicles and ignore them for the most part. Had my close encounters at Yellowstone and Custer State Park in S. Dakota.
Mollie, I hope the appointment goes well and you learn and grow and take another step in your journey.
Oopsie, hopefully the colonoscopy will come back clean… I’ve been doing the Cologuard ‘poop in a bucket’ thing the last decade or so, but I think when I hit 75 I’ll ask the Doc if I can schedule a regular invasive procedure. And I worry about my brother, he’s had problems but pretty much sits around the house and gains weight, but I get my head chewed off if I suggest anything so sympathies there.
Dicey, happy vacationing!
VanGo, hope Ms. Peach didn’t hurt herself with the glass shard.
And I for one still use pencil and paper…when I can remember where I put it…
52, you’d probably be surprised (and maybe shocked) on how often during a normal day you are on camera. Hope they can catch them.
As for ice cream, I would do anything for a double scoop of Butter Pecan (but I won’t do that…).
And time for my usual Firday Big Bowl O’Salad. Catch up again in a little while.
Half the reason I wear a hat is to have a place to stuff my pencil. Neatly folded paper in the butt pocket=shopping list. The other half the reason is I don’t want to sunburn my bald head.
We saw cars in the school parking lots today, that means teachers are getting their classes ready. Now we just have to remember to stay off the road between 1500 and 1530 on weekdays.
Ms Peach is finding bad things to chomp on. I
Bad dog! No eating glass!
When I break glass, I like to wipe a piece of bread over the floor when I’m finished cleaning. It will often pick up the small pieces I missed. (Never put white tile in a kitchen)
It would have to be at least two Farrell’s pig troughs (a double banana split, with six scoops of ice cream, with two bananas and toppings) for me.
Are you serious? Top secrets for a big banana split? No man, it would take some serious chocolate for that.
With my sucky immune system, lettuce is off the menu for the duration,
Also blueberries and jalapeno peppers. For now.
I’ve been doing the Cologuard ‘poop in a bucket’ thing the last decade or so,
My doctor’s office lost my last poop bucket! Actually, the UPS driver picked up three boxes, mine included, and disappeared them. I sure do hope some unsuspecting idiot doesn’t find and open them for any reason.
So I’ve been reading and all, just haven’t wanted to type. PT is amping up and I’ve learned that the nice young man I’m seeing isn’t quite as nice as I first thought. I’m usually pretty sore when I’m done and typing uses sore muscles I want to rest.
Other than that, everything is going apace. Hubs really likes our new robot vacuum/mopper thingy, he’s run it at least once a day since it got here. The cats are annoyed but not upset. George will leave the room and Jolene will just plant her butt in the middle of the room and glare it to touch her.
Last Tuesday I realized that I should call for a refill on my pain meds so I left a message on the correct machine. Friday morning I started calling and the people there didn’t want to talk to anyone, I would get transferred to a line, it would ring a few times and then disconnect. That happened most of the day so around 1500 I called my PCP’s office to see if they could refill it.
Of course my doctor couldn’t without seeing me, so they slipped me in at the end of the day and got things fixed. I don’t really need the pain meds, I’ve taken 28 since June 24th, but I knew that if I didn’t have them, something would happen and I would really need them.
I still haven’t heard from my surgeon’s office. Grrrrr. I’ll be seeing the surgeon on Tuesday, this is on my list of things to discuss.
Tuesday we went to Dairy Land and ordered an ice cream cake and today we picked it up and took it to my doctor’s office as a Thank You.
Something nice about the WV culture is that if its not your business, it ain’t none of your business. My physical therapist recognized me (I’ve been on the local news more than once) despite my habit of looking down to cover my face with my wimple and wanted to discuss his concerns about my political activity now that I’m going to be released to drive and protest again.
He’s adamant that I wear my sling to protect me if I get shoved and fall. It will stop me from trying to catch myself with my hand which could tear out all of the tender recovering tissue. He also doesn’t want me holding my sign but he also doesn’t want me to put a strap around the back of my neck because that can cause spine damage. He’s going to make me a sandwich board sign so I can protest without risking all of his hard work!
I’ll get that on Monday, I won’t be cleared to drive until Tuesday so won’t go to the capital this week either.
Take care of yourself, JtC!
FCM, Amaury Guichon makes amazing chocolate sculptures.
I put in the 3rd set of aligner trays this morning. The pressure isn’t bad when they’re in, but taking them out is yowchy. Fortunately, we have a nice cold watermelon and I’ve hosied the pieces that don’t have rind because I can’t scrape with my teeth.
I got Carmen washed, and hit the liquor store for some rum and bourbon. I had Thai curry shrimp and quinoa for lunch, and a French 75. I did a load of laundry, and took a nap. Spot joined me. Dinner tonight is tuna(cubed, marinated in sake, soy sauce and lemon peel) stirfry with mushroom, green onions, and broccoli. And a Daiquiri.
A cane worthy of JtC.
I don’t think there is anything on today’s agenda.
You need a recovery day after yesterday.
I’ve made an appointment with an endocrinologist that was recommended by the team at Cigna. I’m equal parts excited and saying, “Oh shit. Oh shit. Oh shit.”

Actually, the UPS driver picked up three boxes, mine included, and disappeared them. I sure do hope some unsuspecting idiot doesn’t find and open them for any reason.
If the box was intact but the label was borked, it got sent on through overgoods. If not, your poop is on a shelf in a green plastic bag waiting for the HazMat contractor to retrieve it for disposal.
