Our basement is a finished area - mostly a play room for the grands, but we have a fireplace and a TV down there. among other things. It’s not where crap goes to rot. That’s what the attic is for! The dining set will become a play table for the kids - a place to color and do Lego. The recliners will replace the crappy chairs that are there because we needed seating. And some of the stuff will go with BIL when his apt is available.
Cool. Objection withdrawn, Your Majesty!
I thought that the only advantage of getting older was that we could leave all that middle school drama behind. Apparently other people want both the aches and pain and the stupid games.
I really don’t care what people think about me. I’ve been a teacher too long to believe that everyone will like me. Hell, there are days that I don’t like myself but who has the energy be trashing people by voice mail? That’s so 7th grade.
Anyway, it’s all done and forgotten now.
Oh, and your dinner sounds perfect!
FCM, damn, some students shouldn’t be allowed in school.
pilot The computer is a laptop, and the plastic between the spacebar and the trackpad is bulged up about 1/8". Not in one specific spot, just sort of a gradual slope from one ctrl button to the other ctrl button.
is it the battery? when that sort of slope starts with laptops in my office, the battery is going very bad.
Yeah. If the battery is under there, that is time to get a new laptop before this one catches fire. At a minimum, if you don’t already have a good backup or cloud storage arrangement, now (like today!) is the time to fix that oversight.
If the battery is elsewhere, then this may be harmless. A surprising amount of the guts of a modern laptop are held together with two-sided sticky tape. If the adhesive starts to deteriorate, various bulges or dents may appear. Which are harmless except cosmetically.
Just FYI - this was taken in our basement last month:
I was pissed when the chimney/stove guy arrived and told me he couldn’t clean the pellet stove. They did it last year, but apparently they’re no longer cleaning Harman pellet stoves and they didn’t mention that to me. But he did the basement wood burning insert and went on his way. I called one of the 2 local companies that do Harmans and they’re coming on May 26. As a bonus, they’re about $100 cheaper! So I’ll stop whining.
Time to feed the toddler.
Mom’s story about Daughter’s teacher getting threatened reminded me of something that I witnessed in high school.
A student threatened one of the coaches one afternoon. The coach looked at him very calmly and said “I know people who will kill you for $50.00.”
The kid slinked away.
Don’t have time for anything else, so yays, boos, hugs, etc.
Old Codger Alert:
When we were kids, justice for this sort of thing would be swift and decisive. And what every kid feared most was their parents finding out about something they did wrong at school.
It’s a shame that schools must tread so lightly in these litigious times, and the parents can be harder to deal with than the kids.
Your daughter, I fear, is in a no-win situation here.
Howdy Y’all! We are bein’ slothful and useless as is our wont. Nappage has been accomplished and day drinkin’ is on deck. Cloudy out with a sense of impendin’ rain.
MOOOOOOM have fun with the move. Better thee than me. Hope the situation daughter is dealin’ with can be resolved with minimal pain. Hope SIL gets the job if’n he wants it.
Sensei some folks seem to love bein’ permanent middle school drama queens. Her loss.
Taters you should take tomorrow off as planned IMO.
BooFae have fun bein’ a VIP this weekend!
VanGo hope you figure out the laptop woes soonest. I ordered a new one via Amazon this mornin’ that should be here Sattidy.
A (former?) Doper had a tree cut down last year, and offered the wood to us. Got a text saying the yard is dry enough to pick it up. The trouble is, we no longer have a pickup truck. I’m not sure U-Haul will rent me a trailer, since the Jeep’s electrics are sometimes problematic. The last time I tried to rent a trailer, the battery died in the lot. (This was the previous battery to the one I have now.) We jump-started it, but one of the lights wasn’t working. Apparently there are 21 logs, plus an un-chunked-up log. Sounds like it might fit into a ½ ton pickup. I suppose I could rent one. I’ve also contacted our lawn guy, in case he can bring it up.
Speaking of the lawn guy, he’s supposed to come out on Monday to put in our new lawn.
I’ve decided I’m going to make SWMBO’s potting table the way I want to make it… but with a compromise. She wants it to be tall enough so that she doesn’t have to bend over. I think I can get some hanger bolts and make 26-inch legs out of dowels. I can stain them to match. I was going to start building the table this weekend, but I won’t be able to if I need to shift logs.
It’s 11:30, and time for me to get out on my walk. I was going to mow the weeds out front, and butcher some bushes so we can see the mailbox, after work. Maybe I’ll do that instead of going for a walk. It all counts as exercise, right?
Home Depot is an OK source for rental pickup trucks, stakebed trucks, and box trucks if you can’t borrow one from a friend. Definitely call ahead to the store; their website will let you reserve a vehicle they don’t really have. Do not ask me how I learned this.
I haven’t owned a trailer-compatible tow vehicle in almost 10 years; I find renting a truck now is much less hassle than renting a trailer used to be. As you point out, no fiddly electrics are the big benefit. Although I’m a perfectly competent trailer backer-upper, not having to deal with that or possible jack-knifes from sudden stops is a net benefit too.
Other drivers seem to see trucks much more reliably than they see flatbed trailers too. I’ve had folks lane change into the side of my empty boat trailer more than once. Always avoided a collision or a loss-of-control after my swerve away, but it was close every time.
Give me the truck FTW every time.
Happy Almost Friday! I’ve been keeping up but there is way too much going on to reply to everyone. I hope things get better for those who need good wishes and congrats to those who have good news.
This has been a fairly long week, I forgot how long a Catholic funeral mass was and foolishly drank coffee before attending. I was expecting a Spanish mass, so was pleasantly surprised when the priest started speaking Latin. Not that I have anything against Spanish, but I was raised with Latin mass and always find them to be comforting.
The Celebration of Life was yesterday and the widow has indicated that she doesn’t need quite so much support anymore. This is not to say that she doesn’t want folks around, just that she’s able to think better now that the shock is starting to wear off.
Both girls think that needlepoint is fun so I’ve promised to take them to my favorite needlepoint shop and buy them each a pattern and supplies of their own choice. I wouldn’t want them to think I was being left out, so I guess I’ll just have to buy something for me as well. Darn!
Today has been a good day, I met my new friend at a locally owned coffee shop (yum) and led her to Tai-chi. They have only lived in the state for a couple of years, mapquest is helpful, but noobs are often hesitant about taking back roads and outdriving their data/map connection. This is a very valid concern, it happens to us all the time, but we usually know where we are going anymore.
New Friend seemed to enjoy the class and meeting folks so I’m hoping she will come back. I couldn’t stay after class because hubs had some tree planting guys digging a hole and I wanted to be sure they planted the tree with the branches pointing the way I want them.
The main branches are diagonal to the house and porch, so hopefully we won’t have to start trimming until the tree is well established.
I don’t expect to see a bunch of growth right away, the roots will need to grow first, but fruitless mulberry’s can grow up to three feet a year so I should be getting the results I want in 3 or 4 years.
Quoting myself from this morning for context. …
I wuz wrong on all counts. Damn!
Late this afternoon irk buzzed in. Off to Guatamala City again first thing Fri morning, then back home again first thing Sat morning. That’ll be fun; the hardest part is picking which of a dozen steakhouses to try. Or Chinese. Or Indian. All of which have a Guatemalan overtone and lots of unfamiliar menu items & accessories.
And my car’s not ready. They have the parts, but the insurance inspector needs to see it before the work is done. Sigh. So now the car’s hostage to a third party’s priority scheme. OTOH, they’re paying for the repair, so in effect I’m being well-paid to let them fiddle away a couple days. While I’m away irking there’s not much difference between my car sitting at the shop or sitting at the train station.
This also means I’ll be taking the train to/from irk so I’ll have time to MMP tomorrow morning & Sat afternoon.
Other than that, today has been slothage, an exchange of dirty & clean at the drycleaners, and lunch of leftovers. Dinner shall be similar.
Saw the ortho yesterday and Monday I’m having an arthrogram. Stuff is injected into the shoulder joint then you have an MRI. Remind me not to Google medical stuff.
NO! BAD!! DO NOT DO IT!!! Not even a little bit!
{{{hippy}}} On behalf of one who has served as a scout leader (girl souts though), I appreciate the appreciation.
VanGo, there are mom & pop shops who will work on a computer, as well as the folks at this place (disclaimer, I’m an employee of another branch of it, but I am a customer too) for a laptop and da jungle for desktop replacement. I’ve had good experiences from both.If this is a laptop, can you dock it at an irk station that will allow you
Irked, coughed, sneezed and wheezed today. TGIT! I’ve begun the regiment of benadryl that will slow the itchy parts and cough. I had a coughing fit during a discussion with the my great-great grandboss that was a wee bit embarrassing. However, now he’s aware of my background and that may provide me with some opportunities down the line.
Stay safe and healthy y’all!
It was raining when I got home, so no dog park for the small beast this afternoon.
JtC - FCD said he heard a news report about researchers who sythesized something that will allow non-dairy cheese to be made that is very much like regular cheese. Did you hear anything about this in your cheesy world? He didn’t remember specifics so I’m afraid I can’t tell you more than this.
We went out for Chinese for supper. Now we’re home in chill mode. We’re supposed to meet up with MIL around 9 tomorrow morning and we’ll be moving furniture. Not a lot, tho - 2 recliners, 1 dresser, a few end tables, a tea cart, one table, and a spinning wheel. Not sure what else is on the agenda, but it’s supposed to be hot tomorrow, so I hope we get the heavy stuff done early.
For now, tho, my recliner beckons.
A halfway decent producer could turn ^^ into the lyrics for the next pop (or country) mega-hit single.
I gotta remember this, with TweedleDumber. Especially because they all know I left Texas (it’s on my plates, as well as irrevocably in my accent) but they don’t really know why …
All it takes is a bit of mystery in your voice, and a single arched eyebrow.
People like you are why I have some shreds of faith left in humanity.
Speaking of shreds, I needed - okay wanted - just a bit of fresh food. Went to the Big Meijer, and got …
- a baguette
- a tomato
- brie cheese
- shredded chicken
I felt ever so very French.
Now I’m looking forward to a simple, French-y meal of … well, that.
I caved. It’s a gorgeous spring day. How could I possibly deprive my sweet Monkey of some outside time?
He got some 'nip earlier. Gonna yell for him again; treats will be waiting.
Howdy Y’all! We accomplished day drinkin’ and fixed/et sup with cleanup afterwards. We’re exhaustated and chillin’ now. Hard to keep up such a pace, you know!
