Happy New Year, everyone!
I spent many hours yesterday playing with Legos, and got through section 9 of 15. More than halfway done! The set is in the “assembling various floors/parts separately” phase, and progress photos wouldn’t really look like much, so I won’t share any further pics until it’s done. I chuckled at pilot’s jokey “Tuesday” completion estimate in the last thread, but I’ll spend several more hours on it today and finishing it actually isn’t out of the question…we’ll see!
At around 9:30pm I decided to watch the first Harry Potter movie as a way to distract myself/stay awake until midnight. I paused a little at the realization that the movie was released 22 years ago… If I’d gone straight through it would have ended at ~11:40pm (I chose the extended version), but I had to stop it a couple of times to let Bailey out…and also when someone on the street behind me set off fireworks at around 10pm. I actually had a perfect view of them from the couch (through the dining room window), but they were loud!! Way worse than the noise on the 4th of July. Luckily, they didn’t last long. At around 11:30pm Bailey needed to go out again, and I realized that I was tired and would rather watch the ball drop from my bed (on the small iPad I keep next to it). So I turned off the movie – I’ll finish it this afternoon – and took care of the doggy, did the bedtime routine, and tuned into CBS’s NYE show (via Paramount+) at around 11:58pm. Perfect timing to see the ball drop in NYC. Other neighbors made some fireworks racket for a while but nothing as loud as earlier, and I fell asleep to an episode of Wings (which has replaced The Big Bang Theory as my bedtime show).
I’m still going to my BFFs’ today, but not until this evening and it’ll likely be just a quick stop (vs staying for a holiday dinner). Wife BFF still has a fever and tires easily and probably wouldn’t agree to anyone else going to the house today, but it’s me – and we all want to see each other and exchange our gifts. And I want a cookie care package. And last night I learned that Husband BFF has made his famous lemon bars! I love lemon bars, and his are divine!! Unfortunately, I’m 99% sure they have too much sugar for me to tolerate well these days (post-RNY): I won’t take any of them home, but I’ll definitely have one while I’m there and will simply deal with any consequences.
I’m glad today will be another slow/quiet day. I’m not dreading going back to work tomorrow – by and large I actually enjoy my job – and I’m mostly ready to jump into planning this year’s events for my volunteer organization (the first ones are next month!), but I have a feeling January will be quite busy both professionally and personally and I’m happy to put it all off for one more day.
As for resolutions, I love this:
Hear, hear! Resolutions feel like setups for failure.
I know the start of a new year is a completely arbitrary thing, but I can’t help it: every January 1 I do feel some personal inspiration/hope. My biggest goal for 2024 is to lose the weight I regained last year – and thereby not defeat my bypass surgery and endanger my health – which comprises lots of smaller goals: continuing to do the psychological/emotional work, adding cardio workouts between personal training sessions, controlling my snacking, etc. I have professional and musical goals, as well, but nothing as critical as this one.
I’ve never seen a Parade, but this thread prompted me to do some Googling about how to stream it: it started 15 minutes ago, and I just started watching via YouTube. These floats are so impressive!
Some catching up from last year before tackling 2024’s posts…
I wouldn’t say “skillful dancing” – FCM put it way better than I did:
THIS. Every time I started to “get” something, it changed. Which is why it wound up being not much of a workout: I spent a lot of time just kind of standing there, maybe waving an arm or a leg around, trying to figure out how to copy the instructor.
Like I said, I’ll try it again in a couple of weeks with the regular instructor in case there’s any difference, but if the experience is similar that will be the end of my Zumba experiment.
Ahhhhh! Thank you!!
Sounds like it! And a somewhat private party with people I know/like would beat a bar or restaurant any NYE for me.
Yay!
Bailey gets hers on the first Saturday of each month…but earlier this morning I got my “1st day of the month” reminder to change the furnace filter.
Oh…oh my. That’s quite serious.
Wife BFF loves Diet Cokes from McD’s, and for many years her birthday and Christmas gifts have included McD’s gift cards specifically for use on them! It’s become a running half-joke. This year her main gift is a ticket to a spring Indigo Girls concert, but she’s also getting a $15 McD’s card.
