Me too. But this time I had to admit defeat and it was ‘broke’. My main concern is that older apps I’ve relied on won’t work anymore. But it seems to be okay for most of those. Luckily it wasn’t a HDD failure loss, so I can copy settings and backups over directly to keep things set up the way I like them.
I shovelled in front of the driveway and mailbox, and up to the Prius, about Prius width. Then I shovelled the uphill approach (street) to the cleared area in front of the driveway. No idea when we’ll get mail again, but I hope it looks enticing. Worked up a good sweat in this 40º weather.
I just got back from visiting Dad. He’s in the trauma unit and being well taken care of. This is what I know so far:
- No news on the brain front. They haven’t been able to do an MRI because of his pacemaker.
- The problem with his heart is one he’s had for awhile. I suspect it’s why he’s got the pacemaker but I’m not sure.
- His T8 break is pretty bad. They want to do surgery but they aren’t sure how he’ll handle it. The surgeon that would do it is or of town for the weekend so we’ll know more on Monday.
- For reasons we don’t know, both his blood sugar and his temperature are low. They’ve got him under heat lamps.
He keeps falling asleep mid-conversation, but I’m blaming that on the morphine and oxycotin. I’m going back over Monday after my physical therapy. I’m feeling better about how he is but I’m still a little worried because he’s 75 and not healthy. But it will be what is supposed to be.
Thank you again for all the support, love and prayers.
Afternoon all. I actually did a little housework and made it to the gym (the roads are in good shape, it’s still below freezing but the sunshine is keeping the roads dried out) for some pedaling and sauna time. Home now and probably will remain there.
One nice thing, I checked my water meter before I left for the gym and 2 hours later when I came back I looked…and it hadn’t moved. That felt pretty good.
I have been continuing the weight loss plan and been watching and cataloging my calories. Always remember hearing that 2,000 calories was the average, so I’ve been trying to stay close to that. Today I went looking at Calorie Counters, and for a 71-year old man, 6"2" and 235lbs with light activity, the normal calories needed are…between 2,600 and 2,900, depending which of the 5-6 sites I queried you want to believe. Given my workout schedule, it means I can eat a few more calories and still lose weight, so Yea! for me (of course, a lof of the calories I’m looking at are fat, so that doesn’t help, but hey, if it tastes good…
Real Fish, best for your Dad, I’m 71 years old as I mention above and so far my health is pretty solid, but it’s sobering to think that the years will catch up to me sooner or later…best wishes.
Flyboy, haven’t shoveled in years, glad you’re getting your exercise…
FCM, I think I found your ship on a ship tracking system, will try to keep an eye on you (when I think about it). Enjoy dinner and I recommend the buffet for breakfast (I do that for any cruise I’m on). Also (if you haven’t already), look for one night at a specialty restaurant, it’s pricey but it’s really good. Annnndd I forgot you’re an old hand at cruising so nevermind…
shoe, you have a dirty mind…I like that.
Taters, glad the pups have their shots, maybe they’ll be calmer next time you have to visit.
Yep. I know the mail man isn’t coming today, and I know the weather is warmer and the snow will melt; but I can’t go walking, I’m getting cabin fever, and I need to exercise.
We’re going to head out at about 15 o’clock for a late lunch/early dinner at the new Indian place.
I’m torn between peanut butter and molasses. They all sound fabulous.
I initially read this as Escrement abounds.
I made it to Tar-jay to pick up prescriptions and the few things that I missed on the grocery run Thursday. The most treacherous part of the whole trip was getting from my apartment to my car and from car to apartment. Since our maintenance guy has been snowed in, the only snow / ice mitigation that’s been done in the complex was the parking lot. By the time Rico gets back to irk, stuff will be pretty much melted.
Just finishing up a card series and cuddling a small reddish dog this evening.
I have done nearly nothing today with the exception of dragging overlygirl to Aldi and Target and making myself lift heavy things to avoid brittle bones. The highest highlight was lunch and book shopping alone with the husband unit.
It strikes me at weird times how soon both my kids will be gone. I’ll have a moment of panic (“CRAP, I need a hobby!!”) then calm. I’m going to be at my wits’ end this time in July.
Wait a sec…bon bon cookies? Please tell me more.
My brother got me one of these, it is shockingly warm keeping a hood on.
Wait…what was that about bon bon cookies?
It’s a firm sugar cookie dough. You can use white or brown sugar, cocoa powder to make the dough chocolate. It’s rolled into a ball and pressed down just a little to give it a flat bottom, It looks kind of like a haystack when baked. Then an icing glaze is drizzled over top when the cookies are cool. It can be tinted as well, to match or contrast with the cookie. Cookie dough can be wrapped around a dried cherry or a nut. Chocolate dough with a cherry, and chocolate icing is good.
Yeah, you and one of my FB friends…
MetalMouse, we’re gonna breakfast in one of the dining rooms tomorrow. The buffet is nice, but I also like being served.
Supper was good, tho a nearby table was pretty loud. One woman didn’t seem to have an indoor voice. I went to the “comedy” show - she wasn’t very funny. FCD is hurting so he stayed in the room watching some sci-fi flick. I got back in time to watch the ship leave the dock.
We finally got underway 3 hours late - fueling caused the delay. But we’re moving now. We unpacked and put everything in cabinets or on hangers. I found the laundromat. More exploration tomorrow. Hoping for a good sleep tonight.
We just got back from the new Indian restaurant. Here’s my Yelp review:
This was our first visit, and it certainly won’t be our last! My wife and I shared saag paneer, rice, and garlic naan. She had butter chicken (not spicy) and a Masala chai, and I had the Andhra goat curry (spicy). I love spicy food, and the curry was perfectly hot, and had great flavour. It was so good I forgot to steal a bite of my wife’s butter chicken. How lucky we are to have an authentic Indian restaurant in our little border town! The portions are very generous. There could have been four of us, and we’d still have leftovers.
What else can I say, but we’re going back!
Howdy Y’all! High sloth has reigned today. Nettie low sloth is when you do actual real things between periods of sloth. High sloth is when you don’t even consider anything productive beyond what is necessary to sustain oneself. We are practioners of high sloth every chance we get. ‘Tis cold out, so considerin’ a possible beddy bye time soon. Snugglin’ down in a blankey sounds like a fine thing to do right now.
swampy Tis only quarter o’ nine, but I’m thinkin you’ve got a good plan.
I finished up a series of mostly hello cards with a country theme. Now, it’s sloth until bedtime.
I waited for the fog to lift, then walked to the pharmacy and the grocery store (craving oranges). This poor woman at the pharmacy was trying to figure out if she paid for the Rx that was ready, would she have enough money to pay for the two more important ones coming due soon? She decided to chance it but didn’t have quite enough money. I was ready to supplement, but she found some change in her purse. I saw her again at the grocery store. She was in the liquor aisle. Hey, my mother would have said, "That’s medicine, too!’ so I don’t judge.
When I left the grocery store, it was raining and getting dark. I walked part way home, then thought screw it and took the bus. We were a lively crew. Everyone was so happy! And the driver called out, “Hae a great evening!” even before exiting riders had a chance to say, “Thank you, driver!”
Does anyone else have Raynaud’s Syndrome? When I started out, I had my hands in my pockets, and I guess s the circulation in my fingers ramped up, because they started feeling sticky. Apparently I somehow cut my finger during the white stage. I wrapped a clean tissue around it, but the jacket will have to be washed because of the pocket. It was due for a wash anyway.
I totally forgot about those cookies! I used to make them BC (before children). I put a little chunk of chocolate in the middle. It’s amazing how many dishes I dropped once I had kids: cheese soufflé, homemade pita, curry and chapati, chocolate mousse. I guess I got too busy making octopus sandwiches (When you don’t have hot dog buns, cut vertical slits in the the bottom 2/3rd of a hot idog and microwave. The “legs” curl up like an octopus’ legs, and it fits nicely on bread.) and eggs in a frame. Totally worth it.
Hundreds of children in hundreds of bathtubs in Valparaiso would beg to differ. “Toot! Toot!” Glad you’re having fun…although that comic sounds disappointing.
flyboy, nice review! I hate to say it, but we got zero snow.
MetalMouse, Good on you for all the weight loss! I was just thinking today about how much it sucks to be 5’2. You have to eat like you have a stomach the size of a crabapple in order to avoid weight gain, even when active, which is a problem for people who have the appetite of a boa constrictor.
RealFish, it sounds like your dad is getting excellent care. I had the no idea people with pacemakers or can’t have MRI’s. That sucks. I have a ways to go before I hit 75, but it’s sounding younger and younger to me. I’m glad you can visit your dad, though I’m sure it doesn’t feel like enough. Don’t forget to take care of yourself.
Only in the rat bathrooms.
wordy, when my younger kid went off to college, another mom told me this: “When they leave, the house is too big and too quiet, and it’s hard. Then you adjust, and whew! Life is simpler. Then they come home, and you have to adjust to the noise and confusion. Then they leave again, and the house seems too big and too quiet.”
A day of high sloth here, punctuated by afternoon dancing, then eventually walk to dinner out at our favorite craft taco place we usually go on Tuesdays but it’s been like 3-4 weeks. Tacos were not had, since they weren’t on special.
It is chilly here, 59/15 at 9pm on the way down to 50/10. Probably 63/17 at dinner time, plus a bit breezy. Brrr!
You saw two sorts of people out on a busy Sat night now in the core of our tourist / snowbird season. Those like us in parkas who live here year round and consider ~60 to be Arctic, and those in shorts & polos & sleeveless cute tops who are from the northeast or Canada and consider ~60 to be balmy. There’s no mistaking who is who.

You tower over Her Ladyship. My dinner tonight was about 4x the volume of hers. As always. It feels weird eating with somebody trapped in that situation. Meantime my breakfast is 2-3x hers, and she skips lunch and I need a good one to avoid shriveling up & starving. And I’m a small, albeit very metabolically inefficient, guy.
'Tis a weird world we live in.
FCM: happy boating & don’t forget: dine like you mean it; there’s a whole year to work it off later.
Truefish sounds like you, Dad, and the medics have a coherent plan and collectively realistic expectations. Can’t ask for more at that stage of the game. Big {{hugs}} to all of you.
Metalmouse congrats for a clean kill on the water leaks. And the ongoing weight loss. You rock!
Flyboy that’s a perfect review. Specific details and effusive praise. They’ll get a bunch of traffic off that, you’ll get a warm fuzzy, and they’ll stay in business that much longer due to yo. A trifecta of WIN! Eeven better when you consider actually enjoying eating the meal, not just writing about it.

flyboy, nice review!
If you like Indian food, you should try it if you ever pass through Bordertown.
Another worry. Have y’all heard anything from @Sunny_Daze?
Looks like she’s missing a few months.
Did she announce she was taking a rest from the board?
