Last Moanday (the first day of this MMP), we took our car in because one of the the tire pressure sensors was reporting a problem. Fixing that means unmounting the tires, and mounting them again, and we had planned to buy new tires soon anyway, so we pulled the trigger to avoid paying the labor costs twice.
Also Subaru, so $$, but I was mostly annoyed that our day off ended up being disrupted as we had to drop off the car and then pick it up later. Which meant our other plans got canceled. And the weather was nice.
Tomorrow we have the day off, but the weather’s not wonderful.
Was a very busy week, and now the weekend’s also been busy as we get stuff cleaned (hubby) and get some cooking done. Made apple dumplings and springerle yesterday, but the springerle are just now getting baked, as they have to sit overnight. They are actually my second back this winter, but the first batch didn’t have feet, so not photogenic enough for sharing.
Also made popovers and split pea soup with sausage. Popovers won’t last the day, but the soup has been portioned out for the freezer so that future me doesn’t have to cook every day over Christmas break.
Had a hankering for peppermint meringue cookies, so I got some egg whites out to thaw. Fresh eggs whites would probably be better, but I tend to accumulate egg whites, and this will be a good way to use them up.
And it seems I don’t have cream of tartar. Supposedly vinegar can be used as a substitute.
Morning all. Guess maybe I overdid a little yesterday, or that big comforter is a little too cozy, because I was in bed until 8:45am today. Dishwasher is running, NY Times acquired and the morning banana assimilated, so have about an hour to catch up with the SDMB and other things before dressing and heading to the Olive Garden. 48F heading to 54F with a good chance of rain for the afternoon (just a good English day, eh, boofae?) so activity will be limited.
And there has been 26 messages since I last communicated, so let’s see what Sattiday night held…
JtC, that volunteer work sounds like a good thing to get more into the community and do good at the same time.
CatGlove, some saavy shopping.
shoe, I always try to get a close to the drive-in window as possible, albeit the sacks of burgers and fries I get are not quite as aerodynamic as pizza boxes.
Boo fae, glad you and friends could get together but sounds like the weather refused to cooperate. And glad you could provide a friendly ear to your friend’s frustration. And hope the fence can be repaired quickly, I suspect yours will not be the only one requiring work.
Happy Vergering, swampy. And if the rains come as expected, the RDOS will be strong in this one…
Happy Almost-Anniversay, FCM/FCD.
Cookie, happy walking, but take care.
Dicey, a good day spoiled is never fun, but good tires are one thing I am adamant about having on my car, so I think you did the right thing.
And yays, boo, hugs and assorted good vibes to all. Need to do a little more internetting before readying myself for the pasta-calorie blowout. Have a good Sunday all.

The “just stay hooooome” yen is strong this morning: I’ve talked myself out of going to MD this afternoon for my oldest friend’s daughter’s bridal shower. In short, it’s one of those things where it might be good to see a handful of the people for a little while, but it’s a lot of driving and I won’t get to spend any quality time with the ones I’d want to (the bride and her mom) and the whole thing just really isn’t worth the effort. I’ll put the gift card in tomorrow’s mail, with my holiday cards.
Turns out I did already have a second string of battery-powered outdoor lights in one of the holiday decor storage bins! Yay! I put them on the biggest hedge last night, when I changed the batteries in the other lights, and decided those two strings look good enough. Then, this morning I noticed that the new string’s lights were still on (I can see them from the home office window) and realized that I’d never turned the timers on! The first string had been on 24/7 for over a week! I can’t see that one from inside the house; it was likely quite dim way before I noticed it. I thought that just turning the lights on at the boxes started the timer function; I’d forgotten that the remote is needed for that. They’re off now, and this evening both strands will get fresh batteries plus I’ll actually start the timers.
Thanks (again) to CatGlove, I got to watch some of the figure skating Grand Prix yesterday: I caught the ice dancing finals and the men’s finals. Peacock’s streaming didn’t include any ads, which was nice, but coverage of the ice dancing ended at 2:45pm and the men’s didn’t start until 3:00pm and there was nothing streaming for those 15 minutes! I honestly wouldn’t have minded 15 minutes of commercials at that point. It was mildly annoying to have to exit the ice dancing coverage and not have time to do anything except keep an eye on the clock before starting the men’s coverage…but not as annoying as Scottish commentator Mark Hanretty’s insistence on pronouncing “lutz” as “lootz.” Heh.
Now that today is plan-less, because it will hit a sunny 60°F I think I’ll take Bailey for a walk before having lunch and settling down for an afternoon/evening of sloth. Less than two weeks until I can start building my next Lego set…
Some kids get a little less cute as they get a little more big…not those two!
I both laughed and groaned at the group’s “Sax Appeal” name.
It’s not just you. The two stores I frequent stopped being open 24/7 during COVID, and never resumed those hours: so, these days if I go on a weekday during work hours it’s not unusual to encounter restocking. It’s still rare for them to do it in the evenings or a weekend afternoon, though, which is when I imagine they’re the busiest.
Oooh! Oooh! Because they both came from a Latin word meaning “stones”: one spinoff came to refer to using stones to do math (calculate, which itself evolved to calculus), while another came to refer to organic mineral buildups (the other calculus). I’d imagine the same Latin word is also behind “calcification.”
O.M.G.
I never carried a purse until I hit my late 40s: I always have pockets, too, and for the longest time I only traveled with my phone (front left pocket), ID/credit card/cash (back right pocket), and keys (front right pocket). Suddenly, though, I also needed to start bringing a fan and reading glasses with me everywhere I went…so, I bought a purse. Sigh. Since menopause ended I don’t need the fan regularly anymore, but if I’m wearing contact lenses (vs my regular glasses) I still have to carry reading glasses: nowadays I’m in the habit of taking a purse – which also contains tissues, eyedrops, lip balm, etc. – when I go out/do anything more involved than buying groceries.
I believe one of you was referring to the UHC CEO’s assassination and the other to Trump’s attempted assassination, in which case frankly I found both comments distasteful and unwarranted. I thought we’d all agreed to keep shit like that out of the MMP…?
Those sound good! I’m a sucker for peppermint-flavored things. Mint + chocolate is my favorite combo, but peppermint meringue cookies sound awesome. Unfortunately, they also sound like pure sugar bombs that would cause me to feel even worse than Cookie. Heh.
A slice of leftover pot roast, some carrots, and some mushrooms for breakfast. Miss Mooch (Goo) sat by me while I ate, hoping for a treat. I let her lick my plate when I was done. (There was ‘gravy’ residue, and a little string of beef.) No need to rinse the plate before putting it into the dishwasher.
FCD would let Higgs lick his plate then tell me it was ready to go back in the cabinet. Such a comedian…
Leaf-suckage is done for the year. The sucker is put away, as is the mower, but ol’ John Deere will be going to Amish Dave’s for a long-overdue servicing. It was an easy chore - the winds blew most of the leaves into the woods or into the garden beds. I figure I’ll leave them in the gardens as protective layers till spring. That’s my story and I’m sticking with it!
The nurse was here a couple or hours ago. She used the word “imminent” - no mincing there. So we continue to wait.
I took some pics of the deck that needs new planks - I intend to send them to some locals who claim to do decks. We shall see what I hear back. I don’t need them done till May-ish so no rush on my part. Off to Google deck-doers.
Church was. We have the best choir anywhere.
Now making Cracker Barrel mac & cheese, plus tuna and peas.
Am watching the Browns score.
Its so nice to have a lovable quarterback.
Surprisingly, I made my usual circuit of just over a mile. The only bad part was not having taken enough kleenex with me. Added plus: I came upon an utterly fearless wild turkey hen having a sip of water from a sidewalk puddle.
I talked to Dad this afternoon. He’s doing OK. I also got some things cut in the studio that I’ll assemble over the next few days.
It was 52F when I took Nelson out a few minutes ago. It was so good not to have to suit both of us up. Now, I’m eating Sunday dinner (a nice stew with autumn vegetation and poke).
Went to breakfast with friends. Upon coming home I notice a little bit of water near the water heater. Emergency call to plumber. The water heater is only four years old and it turns out it was not the water heater. It was a clog in the floor drain. He roto rooted that thing out and everything is fine. Fingers crossed it stays fine for another 19 years. It hit the low 50s today, but Thursday is predicted high is 13. That’s a high, mind you.
There’s somethin’ happenin’ here. What it is ain’t exactly clear.
Strange doings here. I heard a rather loud, prolonged racket in the hall, so I finally went to the peephole to check, and there were four huge suitcases standing on the landing, all with checked luggage tags on them from some airline. Odd. I went back to my phone call. Then I heard more commotion, and the mom upstairs drove off with the kids while the dad dragged each suitcase down the stairs.
Another banging commotion, this time a man and woman using a dolly to lug a big box (new washer?) up the stairs. The appliances up there have all been replaced, so…? Money laundering must be tough on the ol’ Maytags.
The family that just left was there 9 days. This is the third set of tenants who’ve been up there for less than two weeks. There are no weekly leases and no furnished apartments, yet clearly they’re letting people stay there (With no furniture?) for short periods. I’m going to have to go talk with the manager tomorrow.
Cookie, great photo and cool experience!
Brilliant! Thanks so much!
Hey, let me know if this works. Sometimes I’m out, too, as it’s not something I use that often.
Happy Anniversary, FCM and FCD!
I hope so, too. That was awful. Why do people do things like that?
Geez, MMP must mean “Maybe My Plumbing.” It sounds like it wasn’t too pricey a fix, even with what was probably the weekend rate, so that’s good!
Coppertone, I’m sorry, but I can’t remember who Moley is. A mole? (Yes, these are the sleuthing skills I taught Sherlock Holmes in elementary school.)
Moley is one of the 4 ferals who live at the side of our building.
A nice tenant feeds them daily, given them boxes, and gotten them fixed.
Moley is the oreo who likes to eat so much he comes out when I call him, whereby I give him some tuna.
He squeaks instead of meowing.
The guy called him Moley because he has a black dot on his face.
Lady SCAdian made deviled eggs a few years ago with mashed avocado instead of mayonnaise. An interesting colour, but very tasty.
Left the house this morning to take her to work; didn’t get very far before pulling off the road with a flat. The doughnut is now in place, and tomorrow after doctor’s appointments (ortho for me, neuro for her) I guess we’ll be shopping for tyres. Modified rapture.
Howdy Y’all! We deheathenated and I didn’t set the place on fire or cause any disasters, so win-win. We went over to the Parish hall afterwards to sign up for the Wednesday night thang and saw there were little chikin sallit sammiches, chips, fresh fruit cups and KK donuts. So we had N.O.L. cause how could we turn down such a feast! Then we got back to da cave for nappage. We supped on the beast stew. Also, the biiiiiig trash can has been hauled all the way down to the road for pickup tomorrow. In other fun (for me) news, my DAWGS are the second seed in the playoffs and get a first round bye. WOOF!WOOF!WOOF! This is the only sport I get excited about.
The Altar Guild had its own version of Mississippi Squirrel Revival yestiddy. First some background… The flower folk were there earlier and decided to be stoopid. It’s fine to prop the outside side door open when bringin’ stuff in, but close it after you do so. However the flower folk will leave the door open the whole time they’re there, hence the bein’ stoopid part. Well the first stoopid part. A squirrel ran in the door cause it’s a squirrel. The squirrel ran into the Sacristy so the flower folk closed that door and trapped the poor squirrel in there. Stoopid the second part. Now I can understand a freak out, however they should have contacted someone and at least stayed there, at least one of ‘em anyway. They called one person and left a voicemail, then left. The stoopid was strong! A while later the Altar Guild folk show up and unlock the Sacristy to find a very freaked out squirrel who went bat out of hell outta there and was runnin’ around the church. The Altar Guild folk freaked but didn’t get all stoopid. Instead they managed to call for help and get the poor critter out. Needless to say the flower folk are now on THE LIST
I know! The first couple times I heard him say that, I thought he was saying loop and I said to myself, ‘that looked like a lutz to me’. Finally i realized he was using a different pronunciation.
wetone glad to hear that the water heater didn’t leak. Was it roots in the floor drain?
One of my favorite songs. I love the Buffalo Springfield greatest hits and play it regularly. Stephen Stills was/is a crush of mine.
ps. Glad there wasn’t a man with a gun over there… telling you, you got to beware.
Another decent day, 2 in a row, almost a record. Started with taking Bella for a walk; she really is not a fan of either the cold or her “catsuit” outfit as she walked very slowly. I took her out after lunch and it was warm enough that she didn’t need anything on and she walked very sprightly.
Went to a mariachi mass since they were celebrating Our Lady of Guadalupe Day. There was someone selling pierogi in the vestibule and I bought a dozen potato farmers cheese. So, that’s what I had for lunch when I got home.
Watched the Grand Prix Exhibition Gala and was less than impressed. Oh well. Daughter and her friend came over and between us we got the Nativity Scene up then pulled ivy off the house and trimmed some bushes.
Wanted to get a Shish Combo from our fav Lebanese restaurant but they were closed. They didn’t used to be on Sundays. So, I texted a guy whose grandparents had immigrated from Lebanon that loved the same restaurant and asked him if he had a recommendation for another one. It was a little while before he replied and he apologized for the delay but he had been at the Dolphins game. So, I ordered a Combo from another restaurant which included shish kabob, shish kafta, shish tawook, chicken shawarma, meat shawarma, falafel, fried kibbie and grape leaves, served with rice, fattoush and hummus, pita bread and garlic spread. Everyone enjoyed it (but not as good as our favorite Lebanese restaurant).
