And once again, you prove that you are smarter than the average bear!
Hubs knew where the checkbook was, he wrote the quarterly garbage payment last week. He told me that it usually lives in one of his desk drawers, but he wrote the check anyhow. We aren’t sure that the bank will recognize my signature yet.
So I opened one end of the box to slide the check in, but I had made it too tight and ended up taking the box apart again. It was only after I had re-taped it again that I saw the distillery flyer Hubs brought home for NF. Barbara (Hatfield) designed them herself and is rightfully proud of them, so I opened the box again.
It has been re-taped even better than before and will NOT be opened again before mailing. If all goes well, it will be in the mail tomorrow.
I always say “if you want to know the easiest way to do something, find the laziest person in the room”.
I’m guessing she’s still working? Does she like coffee? You could get her an assortment or just give her a gift card for the closest coffee shop. Cheese and/or chocolate could work too, at her age, she already has all the dust catchers she needs, so her favorite consumables would probably be best. If you know what those would be of course.
The evening is winding down and I’ve only seen two lightnin’ bugs. I’m guessing they all got laid and many of their eggs are in my deadhedge
Only two hummingbirds too, the ones I saw last week are the ones I would be seeing in AZ next month. Amazing.
What I tried growing didn’t do well either. I got a few cucumbers and one good zuchinni, the herbs were pretty good though No squash set on and only one pumpkin. But it set late and won’t get full grown. The vines were gorgeous and the blossoms but no veggies.
And speaking of my family reunion yesterday we kind of had another today. Attendance yesterday was low because about a third of the family, one branch was getting ready for a funeral today. The lady was the wife of a cousin of my mother and she was ninety eight. The funeral was in the church she attended all her life, in a small church in rural Kansas. When her husband died he had also attended there all his life. Ninety eight years in one place. Now, my mother was baptized, confirmed, married and buried from here in Topeka but she wasn’t quite that old when she died. The country church has a nice fellowship hall and I have attended reunions there over the years, but there is one other significance it has to my family. My grandmother was not raised in a church but of course my grandfather was, When they began courting seriously she attended church for the first time with him, on Christmas Eve of 1923. She ended up being baptized and confirmed in later 1926, here in Topeka, after she was married to my grandfather. She became a pillar of the church. My sister and I attended the funeral and lunch afterwards but did not go to the committal. The burial was where I have a lot of maternal family, and where I will be interred myself.
I am also the oldest sibling of three. The sister I mentioned is the middle one and our other sister died five years ago, very suddenly.
Tnis is a skill I also enjoy developing, I have also been crocheting a lot lately, for gifts of course, and that keeps me in the recliner.
i was doing the usual 200 Top Blue/Top White loading. Plus heaving the irregs onto the belt. Which was a lot. Between the humidity and being out of fan range, I was pooped. I left as soon as the sort was over. I gassed up Carmen, only a gallon and a half this week, good since gas is just under $4. I did my Aldi run, and also stopped at Harris Teeter. Aldi was blown out, and both were out of Yukon gold potatoes. I have enough Irish in me that any sort of potato shortage makes me twitchy.
The last(and pretty much only family reunion) was just outside of Sturgis in 2007. My Aunt Mary made up Day-Glo neon CLARKFEST 2007 t-shirts for everybody.
Hey, somebody has to crush your stuff while you’re waking up.
When Mom needed alone time, she just told me to go play in traffic.
Yay for fixing, boo for taking orever to figure it out.
Glad the food was good, and Mr. Taters continues to mend.
Late night final time. Exercised and Whataburger added the calories back (still lost a pound down to 203.8lbs.). Outside of that have been mostly inactive. Tomorrow will be busier, what with vaccinations and soccer practice, so just as well I rested up today.
JtC, I think I once got about $7 from one of those class action suits, never did as well as you have. Happy mailing!
Hippie, lovely pic.
And just not motivated to write anymore right now. We’ll see if I’m in a more talkative mood tomorrow. See ya’ll 2sDay.
I’m tired tonight. Didn’t sleep well at all last night. With chemical assistance, I hope it will go better tonight.
The day started cool, 49Ferrets, and rose to 69F for a high. That was fine with me.
Good luck with the shots tomorrow, metal mouse! I’ve still got an itchy lump on my left arm from the COVID vax last Thursday as my last remaining side effect, but I hope to be ready for the flu jab this Friday. Then I’m done for the year.
Knots, I love how you think.
Keep setting the RDOS standard, swampy! As I’ve told you before, you’re my spirit animal!
taters, glad the restaurant turned out to be a keeper! And it’s great to hear Mr. taters continues to improve!
Enjoy Coq au Vin, Mollie, and Hershey, PA tomorrow and following! Sounds like a nice trip for you both.
Congrats on finishing up the big writing organizational project, Lily! A happy accomplishment, for sure.
JtC, you’re a good friend to send such a lovely gift to NF, along with the check to reimburse her. I’m sure she will be tickled to receive such a fun package. And you’re right – it was far more of an undertaking than it ought to have been. Cool about the check for the class action lawsuit! Also, who knew a wimple needs to be so sturdy?
Re blackberries, you can do like I do and make a small batch of jam with them. Takes about 4 1/2 cups of berries to end up with 4 half-pints of jam. If you like it as well as I do, those birds will have some tough competition for the berries! And if you don’t, lots of people enjoy getting homemade jam. Personally, I think you’ve found treasure behind your shed!
It’s at $4.81/gallon here for regular, and rising. I fully expect it to hit $5.00/gallon very soon.
Very nice pic of you and Mrs. Hippie, Hippie. Thanks for posting it.
For someone who walked around in a daze today, I felt like I got some important stuff done. Arranged for a fill of my propane tank in the upcoming week, so that’s done for another 4 years. The woman who arranged the fill got me a good price per gallon and we had a nice gab. Just sort of hit it off. That’s always an unexpected pleasure.
The wasps’ nest is no more. The exterminator fellow dressed in full regalia to take them on, as they were a very aggressive bunch. Glad that’s handled.
The chimney sweep will be out in the next few weeks to clean the wood burner. Now, if I can just rent a log splitter, I’ll be in business for the year.
I’ve had a hankering for pumpkin pie, probably just due to the season. So I made one today. It turned out very well. I am unapologetic about adoring pumpkin pie spice! The pie is super smooth and rich, so I definitely scratched that itch.
That’s it for me, I’m out. Have great nights, all!
@Baker I have been remiss and I want to apologize for overlooking you. I’m glad you are back, you have been missed! I hope your days are happy ones and you learn to really enjoy your life as a RDOS. (It took me about half an hour.)
Good idea, I am sure that there are more than that in safe picking distance. I did eat a couple of handfuls today and they were juicy and sweet.
I was very surprised about the size of the check and impressed that they found my current address, I filed for it before we moved. I also thought the way the envelop was marked was kinda tricky, it looked like junk mail and many folks just toss that sort of thing without looking.
I wouldn’t need a sturdy wimple if I was smart enough to protest somewhere in the AC! (who would have thought that I’d still be wearing one after all this time. this time line sucks.)
Oh, I seem to remember you asking me about driving without being able to see farther than 25 feet ahead of my car. I have made accommodations to my unknown-until-we-moved-here fear of deer. I try to avoid driving during the twilight hours when they are heading back to their sleeping area and I also let people pass me as soon as I can. Then I follow them at a normal speed while leaving plenty of stopping room between us. Hopefully the leading car will scare the deer off the road and if they hit the deer, I will have time to stop.
For a while I was happier on the freeway, but then I watched a deer play frogger across 6 lanes and there went that illusion.
At least I’m saving money on gas, LOL!
It’s still under five a gallon in WV, but I’ve heard it is going up faster than last time.
At least we aren’t in CA. Their gas is heart-stopping high during normal times, I can’t imagine how much it is now.
Was a glorious closed Monday at the museum, but I couldn’t get quite as much done as hoped. There were guys sand blasting the metal firer escape in the park, so no finishing the snails project.
I got a “working hard or hardly working” from the executive director of the museum at 4:45. There were 5 people standing around a prototype thing on the floor, trying to decide if it worked, as it was being installed. Fuck you bitch, go write a grant or whatever it is you do.
My manager, and El Presidente, didn’t say anything about the $100 shortage on my drawer on Friday. I don’t know why I was short, but I suspect two, brand new, $100 bills were stuck together. Fingers crossed, I won’t get in trouble.
What a day. The first member to come in brought her ‘life’s savings’ of rolled coins ($172 worth) and a couple thousand dollars in tip money (mostly $1 to $20 bills) for deposit. [Aside: I have rolls of quarters, dimes, nickels, and pennies that are only used for measuring. My manager said I should count them as loose coins in my drawer, rather than rolled coins in my vault, so that I can measure rolled coins brought in by members. Yeah, right. Nobody brings in rolled coins. But this morning I decided to put them in my drawer – though I still count them with my rolled coin amounts.] The next member had, like, $4,000 in mostly small bills for deposit. So I have stacks of paper money, and a basket full of coins. It was after lunch before I was able to break everything down into bundles and sell the coins and the surplus currency to the vault. It took even longer until I could count my drawer. I’m guessing that those 09:00 transactions were finally sorted out around 14:00.
Anyway, much to my pleasure, the amounts I counted in my drawer matched the amounts the computer said I should have. After my OCD about knowing how much of what I have had been resolved, it was decently quiet… until a quarter to five. A cow-orker had not finished the posting of checks received in the mail. Since she was leaving early, she asked me to finish for her. We close at 17:39. Between the members coming through the drive-up, and the surprise mail deposits/payments. it was 17:33 before I finished – three minutes after we close. There are still things to do after closing, so we didn’t get out until about ten-'til-six. It was a very Monday Monday.
I thought I might have a zucchini boat for dinner. No, my leftover rib-eye and a can of spinach. So of course, I had the tom kha gai.
PCP visit at 07:40 tomorrow. It’s about bedtime. But I have a little tequila to drink first.
Oh… This morning I cooked four Johnsonville chorizo sausages (about a pound, skin removed, and broken up with a spoon) and five, scrambled, ‘jumbo’ eggs. I made a breakfast burrito out of some of it, and put the rest into a container for the rest of the week.
I’ve been lurking but haven’t had time to post in ages. I still have to keep this short, but something’s better than nothing…I hope.
I’m heading back to Chicago on Friday to help with my brother’s knee replacement surgery. Thanks to their fed-up younger son, my sister-in-law has given up driving. She was a bad driver before she lost an eye and broke her elbow, so I’m really relieved about this. Nephew has installed Uber and InstaCart apps on his dad’s phone so they can survive without anybody driving, as my brother will be out of commission for weeks. My SIL is more difficult than ever, but hopefully all will go smoothly.
Today I planned to clean my apartment and do laundry. (I have a washer again! Bliss!) However, elderly neighbor called to say she was feeling bad. I went over. Long story not as long, she had severe abdominal pain. She’s very stubborn. It took me most of the day to talk her into going to the ER. I held Max the Dog hostage and said I wouldn’t feed him unless she agreed to go. She capitulated but insisted on showering first. She felt faint in the shower, so I called 911. The EMTs were great. She’s been admitted to the hospital: a kidney stone got embedded in her bladder. They may have to do surgery. For once I’m glad I was bullheaded. Sparing you TMI, things got worse after she got to the ER.
I have Max (whom I did feed) through tomorrow, when neighbor’s daughter, who arrives tomorrow, will find a temporary home for him. I’m hoping my carpets survive. He’s not 100% housebroken. He also refuses to eat unless he’s hand fed and then eats only fresh food, no kibble. Neighbor treats him like a human baby. Dogs need to be dogs.
Daughter’s cat crossed the rainbow bridge. It was actually a serene and beautiful passing. Daughter likes her new job.
I don’t think it’s a good idea to fill a gas can with yogurt.
FCM has a gas can you could borrow if you don’t mind a little yogurt residue…
What a wonderful dad! I hope he learns to entrust you to the vagaries of the universe. It’s a very hard lesson. I still hasn’t mastered it.
Taters, I’m glad Mr. Taters is gradually starting to feel better.
Lily, organization is good for the soul.
Efficiency expert Frank Gilbraith said that he learned a lot about efficiency in factories by studying the laziest man in the plant. This made a big impression on me when I was a kid. “Hey, Mom, I’m not lazy! I’m efficient!”
Morning, mumpers! It’s currently 16c/61f with no predicted change, and cloudy. Weather app says “Fucking suck it, clouds”.
I missed posting yesterday as it was a busy one. I was up early to tend to the needs of cats, then ran the rollsuck, showered afterwards, went shopping, packed stuff and drove 4hrs to south Wales. We arrived at the holiday park, checked in, unloaded the car and returned it to the carpark where it stays until we go home on Friday.
We’re sharing a lodge with 6 friends and have another 12 friends sharing two adjacent lodges. Some of them came over to us yesterday evening, we chatted, watched a film and had cocktails.
I have picked up germs from somewhere so I am medicated with cold/flu stuff, didn’t sleep much last night so I am looking forward to a quiet day.
Good Mornin’ Y’all! Up and caffeinatin’. YAWN ‘Tis 72 Amurrkin out and mostly clear with a predicted high of 91 and becomin’ partly cloudy and then cloudy durin’ the afternoon. Today is laundry and mowage day. ICK! OYKW will take care of laundry stuff whilst I accomplish mowage. I will also need to get gas for the mower. There will actually be somewhat of a breeze most of the day, so there’s that, I guess. Sup will be steak, sallit, and cheesey garlic bread. Easy and tasty!
Coppertone dang! That’s all I can think of to say. Well, the only polite word I can think of to say.
JtC glad the box o’ shine is finally already to go.
CupCakes I remember your stories of your grandmother bein’ a pillar of the church she attended. I recall seein’ a video you shared when your grandmother turned one hundred. It was a video of her and the Pastor of her church and they talked about her years of service in the church.
doggio Hope there’s not a N.O.T. shortage. A day-glo neon shirt just screams family reunion!
Lily there are days I need a nap to recover from nappage. I would be a great chihuahua!
Hippie Sunflower and you are lookin’ good in that pic!
BrightTree hope you’re havin’ a better night’s sleep. Glad you got a good price on the propane. We have a propane gas grill that we use year round. The tank on the grill is about half full and I know we have one full tank, so hopefully it’ll be a while before we have to refill. Huzzah on the nasty wasps bein’ gone!
FlyBoy that does sound like quite a day! Sounds like TPTB are not too worried about the shortage.
Nellie that’s a whole lot goin’ on there! Will you be in Chicago for all of your brother’s recovery? Glad you could get your neighbor the help she needed. Hope she and your brother recover soonest. So sorry about your daughter’s cat. Glad she likes her new gig. I think I’ll fill up a trash bag with gas. That should be easy to store, right?
BooFae sorry you don’t feel well. Bein’ sick on vacation suuuuuucks! Feel better soonest.
Now I need more caffeine and to feed rumbly tummy. Then, well, onward with laundry and mowage! Rah. I am rather displeased that responsibility and productivity are gettin’ in the way of my RDOS sloth!
Aww, it gets a nice stay in the car park so it can play with the other cars while you stay in the human park Feel better soon.
It’s sunny with occasional showers here today, but not very warm. I appear to have wood pigeons nesting in the solar panels on the roof. While I like having birdies nesting around, I would prefer that they didn’t do it there.
I’m mostly spending the day so far discovering new depths of hatred for microsoft word and its opinions. It seems to be getting some kind of passive-aggressive kick out of messing with my spacing. I’m down to the final discussiony bit (though I still need to edit a bunch of the rest of it) and I’m fighting the urge to include more sarcasm than is in any way acceptable.
I had trouble finding one, but folks on NextDoor pointed me to 2. Now we just need to coordinate with Daugher and SIL to give us a hand. And I’m so glad we filled our heating oil tank at the end of last season - it’s up to $5.40/gal and I think we paid about a buck less. I probably tossed the receipt, so I can’t be certain. Pellets went up, too. I foresee lower temps and more sweaters in the house this winter. Plus we may burn wood downstairs and leave the doors open to let the heat rise. Depends on how cold it gets.
heh - I used to do the same! I do that when it’s raining really hard, too.
I read that Frank Gilbreth said it first. Could just be an urban legend… (ooops - ninja’d by nellie!)
You coulda said something yesterday, dammit!
Today started with 55 Ferrets. FCD is at his Dr appt and I’ll be leaving in 20 minutes or so for mine. Holy crap - we’re old people!!! I also started my day by spilling half my diet coke on my keyboard and blotter (which I had to blot to clean.) luckily, but keyboard is the kind you can hose off, so I unplugged it and rinsed it after I soaked up the desk mess. How’s your day so far?
Not sure what the rest of my day will hold, other than feeding Daughter dinner and keeping her spawn overnight. Then I get to take them to school/bus stop in the morning. Otis gets shop tomorrow. And that’s the extent of the excitement on our calendar for this week.
