(OLD) Out and About in the MMP

Howdy, all! At 11:45am it was sunny and a lovely 66°F here in the DMV, and I opened my windows again. Yay! It was still a little chilly for that, but it’s supposed to hit 77 this afternoon and I know I’ll be grateful soon enough that I let in some cooler air first. Today starts a streak of early-summer-like weather (including weekend thunderstorms), and I’m so happy about being able to turn the heat off again…hopefully for the season! :crossed_fingers:

Well, a lot of people do defeat the procedure. Once you’re at least 1-2 years post-op, it’s actually pretty easy to do. My bariatric center tells us repeatedly – from the initial consult – that the surgery is just a tool: unless you also do the mental and emotional work, you’re eventually gonna go right back to the habits that led you to need surgery in the first place. Too many people, especially those who had the surgery a long time ago, either assume or are told it will be a silver bullet. I’ve seen it in my own family: my cousin and her husband both had the surgery 5-6 years ago, and are now back to almost where they were weight-wise.

Morbid obesity is tough – to fix, to observe, and to live with. I hope your sister figures out something that works for her. :blue_heart:

Wow, her profile sounds a lot like Bailey! My girl doesn’t need any encouragement to go outside and she does bark, but otherwise it’s spot on. Especially the last line: “She doesn’t like loud noises or fast movement, so she probably wouldn’t do well around young children.” That is SO Bailey! Sounds like you are getting a perfect doggy.

Woot!!

I admin three different SharePoint sites at work, and I have alerts set on every freaking library for just this reason: the alerts can be annoying, but I’ve been able to head off large-scale dumba**ery a few times.

My junk e-mail these days is full of messages telling me I’ve won stuff. The weird thing is the article is always “an.”

“You have won an Dewalt power drill!”
“You have won an Ninja air fryer!”

Might as well just say “This is an scam” on the subject line.

Spent a few hours yesterday putting together a cabinet for Mrs W’s office. It was a much bigger job than I expected, and I’m still not done. Getting close though; I just need to put the doors on today.

Then we took a short walk in the 90° heat to get the mail (about a block and a half each way). It felt good to me. Living in San Francisco, I really missed hot weather. The wife was not as happy. Today’s predicted high is 95, and she has vowed not to leave the house. That’s OK, I’ll go out and bask for a bit later on.

My guess is they were so grateful you came back to fix their error that they intentionally undercharged you. When I was in a position to, I made “mistakes” like that occasionally when I thought folks deserved a little discount.

I’m so glad! This made my day, and I love the idea of brace buddies!

Afternoon all. Laundry has been washed, the machines here cost $3.00 per wash for comparison, and the shirts and stuff are in the dryer now, with the underwear and socks to go next. Not very busy and pretty nice, but hopefully I’ll be able to use my own machines here by the next time laundry day rolls around.

Wheelie, that is pretty hot for the season; can understand your wife’s reluctance to leave the AC-comfort.

Oopsie, still need the heat here now and then (it’s 71F but takes time for the house to warm up and it gets into the 40’s at night).

Shoe, you win the internet for the day!

talkie, so glad Overlygirl has a new ‘brace buddy’. Hope it helps out both of them.

Thank you. Of course, I did stop at Kroger and picked up Cheese Balls, Ritz Crackers and some Graham Crackers (I can always be led into temptation, just have to avoid gluttonly).

Boo fae, sounds like an excellent trip and yeah, chilling in a business lounge is a good thing when you can do it. Safe travels home.

OK, need to get the shirts out and do the hanging-up while the u’wear takes its turn in the dryer. Have a good day everyone.

I bought a pair of Alden 405 boots about 15 years ago, but haven’t worn them all that much. Why not? Well, it’s so much easier to pull on a pair of Keens (or the past half a hear or so, Sketchers). Shoes get shifted around, and eventually you lose track of them. Well, they’ve surfaced; so I decided to wear them today. My feet were like, ‘What? What is this?’ but they soon got used to them. I haven’t walked much in them today. Out to the car, from the car to the office, down the stairs to my work cave, and a couple of trips to my coffee pot. I did bring my Sketchers in my backpack just in case, but the Aldens are working out nicely. I’ll have to treat them to some saddle soap or polish or something.

Of course I had to search on the boots so I could post a link to a picture. YIKES! I had no idea they’ve gotten so expensive. :astonished:

I get those also, but usually in my used-for-junk email address. A quick hover over the sender reveals the scammy source.

I mowed the back yard and raked up 7 or 8 carts of leaves from the front ditch - there’s at least as much more to be raked, but I was getting hot and tired and thirsty. Maybe I’ll change into shorts and go out again in a bit.

I have a bird nest in my greenhouse! I saw at least 3 little eggs in it - I think it’s a sparrow nest, but not being a bird person, I wouldn’t swear to it. I was going to start some plants in there, but now I’m reluctant to disturb them by my proximity.

I think I’ll go crochet for a bit.

Finally did some adulting and bought the remaining plane tickets for our July and August travels. Still have to rent a car and consider hotel reservations, but that’s enough decisions for today.

After yesterday’s beautiful spring weather, today has been dreary, and the rest of the week’s going to be the same. According to the weather people we’re missing 1-2 months of rain, so I’ll take the rain.

Went to the gym (following MetalMouse’s good example) for the first time in two weeks, as last week I was fighting a cold and thought they didn’t want me sneezing on everything. Tomorrow should be fun as my body will want revenge for what I did to it today.

doggio, crossing fingers for the pup interview and that pup and future cat get along. Looking forward to your stories about their antics.

BooFae, I presume the chemical fire in Hamburg didn’t affect you. Glad you had a good time.

Pilot, I’m also a fan of loratadine, especially from Costco. Unfortunately last week’s birch pollen bomb was too much for it. Another reason to be glad of the rain - helps clear the air.

Boo, so like the story of the “tummy bear”. That’s where they’re going, right?

Real Fish, I really like your description:

My hair’s in the not-quite-long enough stage for ponytails, and I am trying to resist cutting it off again. I miss bouncy hair, but ponytails bounce in a differnt way. Hope your dad gets the PT he needs.

{{{sari and Ripple}}}

Taters, I can’t even imagine the amount of work for all the emergency planning - hope MPA gets in line.

Cookie, my mom is one year post-knee replacement. She’s a lot faster and has a lot less pain (well, at least her knee is causing her less pain). She did, and is doing, the recommended exercises and reached her range of motion goals earlier than the therapist expected. I was amazed how fast she was up and moving - even the stairs at home didn’t slow her down much.

I’m not sure anyone does any admin on our work SharePoint sites. That might explain why they are a disaster. A very thankless task - well done oopsie.

FlyBoy, those boots are gorgeous. I have yet to spend that much on a pair of boots. Not yet.

Getting close to settling down time. And tomorrow’s work, but it’s just a 3 day week. Hopefully it’ll be somewhat quiet, as many people are on vacation. Wistful thinking.

It’s time for scotch - that’s not too complicated, right?

Me neither. I don’t remember what I paid for them, but I do recall they were kind of expensive. But not that expensive! If they were, I wouldn’t have bought them.

I pulled out my 'late-'80s vintage, brown, Doc Martins a while ago. Seems they’d gotten tighter over the decades. (I think my feet are getting bigger. My 10 1/2 All Stars are tight now too, and I tend to wear a size 13 in Keen.) At least the Docs are still reasonably priced.

Howdy Y’all! We pigged at the GC and then accomplished nappage. Next up is day drinkin’.

My reply to those are, “Well, if you can FIND my penis to make it longer, thicker and harder, then you’ll deserve every penny you get!”

FCM, I wonder if the refusal to go to the doctor is a make thing. My dad is the same way (which is why I knew he wasn’t feeling well the second & third times in the hospital), as is Hubby. I hope you’re able to talk FCD into going sooner rather than later!

Taters, I don’t blame you for being tired for having to pick up after everyone else not doing their jobs. (And no apologies on griping. We’ve all needed to sometimes.) I wish I could say, “Do X and that will teach them,” but I haven’t been able to figure it either when I was in professional life or with my kids. But I am wishing you the best of luck.

MetalMouse, I’m proud of you sticking with all of it. I’ve been on diet soda almost exclusively for years so that isn’t a big change for me. Part of my problem has been two-fold - I eat multiple little meals/snacks throughout the day because I get full quickly, and I am so often out on the road running to this appointment or that one or driving a kid somewhere that fast food has become a staple. Once Dad gets home, I’m going to jump back on my two mile a day walk. I honestly don’t expect to lose any more with sticking with these changes, but if I can even maintain at this point, I’ll be happy.

BooFae Sounds like you did have a good time. Schnitzel and beer sounds really good right about now.

Nellie, he does use a walker a lot of the time (and if not a walker, his cane), but his balance is not good enough for it to keep him upright. I went to see Dad this morning and he said that PT is going to start working on his balance today. Tomorrow is the review board to see which departments think he can go home and which ones think that he may need to stay longer. His NP is going to mention all of this to the head of PT so she can help advocate for Dad too.

Dicey, ponytails really do bounce differently. It’s one of my biggest disappointments with having cut my hair short, that I can’t ponytail or braid anymore. The shorter length was a good call, but I do miss my ways to put my hair up.

I’ve always loved my hair. For many years, it was super long, super fine and super thick. The color was usually between a mahogany and a chocolate color, even without chemical assistance. But as I’m getting older, I’m finding that I’ve lost the thickness. My braids were looking kinda pathetic. Unfortunately, the fineness is still there so trying to keep any barrettes in my hair is futile. I just need to figure out what all I can do with it at the new length and with the new color.

I did get a chance to visit with Dad for a couple hours today, which was good. I’d fully expected to have to wait for him to get back from dialysis and had books to read, but he was back in his room within 5 minutes of my arrival. Tomorrow, I’ll bring books again because if I don’t, then Dad will be really late and I’ll be bored.

While visiting with Dad, CtE called. Apparently, they had a panic attack during chorus this morning. They were in their counselor’s office for most of a period trying to get themselves calmed down and figure out what caused it. Since I was visiting with Dad, they decided to try calling Hubby instead. After talking to them for a bit, Hubby gave them permission to take the bus home and walk home from the bus stop (since we’re, again, temporarily down to one vehicle. And I hope to hell this will be the last time.) So we’ve got a sleeping CtE today, and a tired fishy. I still have a bunch of writing to do and some cleaning in the bedroom. But nappage really does sound like a good idea to me. So that may come first.

I am, too. It’s practically free there compared to what you’d pay for the generic elsewhere, like Target. I share the huge package of it with my sister in Iowa who doesn’t live near a Costco. I guess that makes me Mumperville token drug dealer. Oh, well, worse could be said.

Made sense to me too. Besides, tummy was a word he’d already mastered-the adults who love him and have cared for him have been playfully talking about his tummy since he was born. Gummy isn’t a word that has naturally come up all that much in his young life so far. His 5+year old big sister made sure, though, to teach the many and sundry uses of “booger” so now he is cheekily razzing his parents with that one. I don’t even try to keep a straight face~besotted grandmas don’t have to. “Booger” away little man!

Ufff. Moving stuff to a storage unit so the window guys can get through. We’re using this as the opportunity to start a major sorting (hey, we’re retired–let’s give away all of these work clothes!).

I remember doing that. All my dress shirts, save one. All my ties, expensive and not, save two. Suits: didn’t keep any. A tux and the assorted crap that goes with it. I still have an ill-fitting sport coat. It was freeing. My wife finally donated all her old work clothes prior to our move from Portland. I also sorted through all the souvenir T-shirts and donated most of them. Our closets are pretty skimpy now.

[BIG WHINY RANT AHEAD]

I am so done with my current vet!!

Bailey and I have been going to the same practice for the past 7+ years, and “Dr. Y” joined them during the pandemic. She first saw Bailey in October 2020, for her annual exam/vaccinations. At that time no one was allowed in the building, and owners could only talk to the vets over the phone. Right away, I didn’t care for this woman: she was disorganized, unclear, and slightly condescending. Bailey usually only has to go once a year, and I thought maybe she would be better in person, so we hung in there. October 2021 was the same (still only over the phone, and she was annoying again, but I let it go). This past October the practice was back to allowing us in the exam rooms with our pets, so I dealt with Dr. Y in person for the first time. No better! Still quite condescending – including flat-out lecturing me, out of the blue, about how much prednisone to give the dog whose atypical Addison’s Disease I’ve been managing just fine for the past six years – and telling me Bailey’s teeth were fine, and her follow-up was terrrible: when she called with Bailey’s lab results she got fixated on one random small thing, and I had to prod her about a couple of big things (“oh yeah”). I was really hoping a different doc would be working on Saturday, when I took Bailey in for her leg issue, but no such luck…and Dr. Y was condescending again (explaining what bandages are for, and also sincerely informing me that dogs don’t actually understand English). I want Bailey to be treated quickly, so this time I told myself that as long as Dr. Y is a competent doctor I can deal with annoying – but I decided that I’d make an appointment with someone else this fall, when it’s time for her next annual exam/vaccinations.

Today, however, was the last straw. She assured me that she would call yesterday or today to schedule the procedure to have the thing on Bailey’s leg removed, but about an hour ago I called the practice because it was nearly the end of the day and guess what? Dr. Y isn’t in today. And she won’t be in until Thursday. And the only note she left with the staff was about getting a sample of the growth, not removing it entirely (which is what she’d told me). That’s it; I’m done with her. :rage:

I told the woman on the phone that I was frustrated, and that Dr. Y and I seem to have incompatible personalities and I’d like to switch to another doctor in the practice. Someone is supposed to call me tomorrow. Bailey and I may need to start over with a new exam by another doc, but whatever. Mostly I want to know when this bandage can/should come off her leg – I don’t feel like it should stay on there for a whole week (?) – and I want to get the procedure finalized and scheduled, and I’m now even more concerned about the timing (because she needs to be able to board no later than the 23rd, so I can go to NJ for my uncle’s funeral).

Ugh.

[/BIG WHINY RANT]

Don’t you mean “Mumperville tokin’ drug dealer”? (Sorry. Couldn’t resist.)

Fuck off Dr Y! Listen to your clients.

We did get laundry done, so we weren’t total slack offs today. Go Us!

doggio, Darci is adorable! If you’re working through Wake County Shelter, you may wind up with one of my cousin Susie’s fosters. (I’d vouch for you  )

pilot, back when I still lived in the city and had to use the laundromat, this one may have had some winsome going on on occasion. They had the right idea; most laundromats that I’ve been to have a dive bar, liquor store and / or convenience store specializing in 40s next door.

Irked, came home, walked Nelson, et and did the last page in the family cookbook. Now all that’s left is the cover and spine title.

Stay safe and healthy y’all!

Up from naptime, watching hockey, and having a Manhattan. Tonight is Redneck Stirfry night, dinnerwise.

You’re not being whiny. If a Dr. Y showed up at my practice, I’d leave, too.

Just for the record, mine has a Bar&Grill (never been in there), a tattoo parlor, a Game exchange and a barber shop.

Thanks, nellie, for getting me off the spot for silly jokes.

Oopsie, you showed patience and tried to make it work; going to a vet you have confidence in is important. Best of luck.

Cookie, I still have a couple of dress shirts and two sport coats, but nothing more from work time. Rest are hopefully being used by someone who needs them.

Real Fish, I used to do the fast food routine, now I pretty much restrict myself to Moanday-only (also eat out for dinner on Sunday). Hope CtE gets settled; at least the school treats it seriously (hate to think of what they would have done when I was in school in the 1960’s). Best wishes to Dad-unit.

Flyboy, nice boots but the price is :astonished: :astonished: :astonished: Bought a pair of boots like that a Calebra’s for my February trip (zipper on the side instead of laces) and I paid about a sixth of that. Glad you got them when you did.

All the laundry is put away. Didn’t get to the gym (nappage interrupted) but did go out to the soccer fields and got some walking done, about a mile and with some elevation. Mac-n-Cheese for dinner and a couple of Graham Crackers to polish it off (seeing if I can maintain my discipline with stuff like that in the house). Forgot to get milk so off to Kroger tomorrow, they also have 2-liter Pepsi products for $1.49 each so I’ll pick up some more.

OK, need to do some soccer-stuff. Take care all.
