(Old) Springing into cleaning in the MMP

33F this dismal, sleety morning. Actually, belay that, it’s fucking snowing out. At least we’re not “up north” where they’re expecting six inches or more.

Some Easter baking will be done by the wife today, and our dinner will be delivered by the local grocery.

Good morning.

It’s 34F and clear outside. It’ll remain mostly clear and sunny today, with a daytime high of 63F.

BBBoo, hang in there. I’m glad to see you post and that you’re doing better. Also, I’m smack dab between Nellie and Flyboy if you ever get to take your trip out here.

Lily, congrats on the publication of your poem!

Mr. Taters’ 24-hour post-op check-up went well. He had 20/20 vision in one eye and 20/25 in the other. It’s early days yet, but he’ll probably need glasses for farsightedness (meaning to read things up close). We’ll see what transpires at his optometrist appointment. He can’t really read food labels yet and see print up close on his computer, although there is some improvement on the computer. At least he’s not hunched over with his face right up near the monitor, and one eye squeezed shut.

He keeps talking about how bright the colors are and that he had no idea things were so colorful. He told me that prior to his surgery, it was almost like he was seeing things in black and white or sepia tones.

I’m not sure what’s on the agenda today. Maybe I’ll get out in the yard for a bit, but to be honest, I’m not feeling super excited about that. I’m not sure why, I usually love it, but I’ve been almost dreading having to start my gardening.

Mollie, we are all focused on whatever is going on with our lives at the moment, and we write about it here. Write away.

Unless my son comes up, we probably won’t be doing anything special for Easter. I already sent the grandkids Easter goodies, along with a rock tumbler for my grandson and an art kit for my granddaughter. My grandson loves rocks, and my granddaughter loves arts and crafts.

Alrighty, time to get going. I’m a little behind this morning. Take care!

Motivation if ever there was any !!

Just finished assembling a fruit tray to take tomorrow. I expect I’ll be bringing most of it back, but no biggie. Tobias will be here after we get back and that boy lurves him some fruit!

I stopped at Ace Hardware - they had a 4-pack of marigolds for $3.99, so I got 2 to be divided among the 4 planters on the front porch. It’ll leave space for petunias when they show up in stores. I’m about to go out and deal with them now. FCD went to the boat to check on things, and Otis is with him.

It’s sunny and warming up. Birds are tweeting away - old-time tweeting, not Twitter tweeting. Off I go to play in dirt for a bit.

Awwww…

Glad you’re feeling better, BBBoo.

Up, caffeinating, breakfasted and fixing to do KP. Sis postponed our day out until tomorrow, so I’ll bake cornbread and muffins today. I’m not having a fancy Easter dinner tomorrow, just a pot of pintos, some turnip greens and cornbread.

Stay safe and healthy y’all!

Just finished planting 8 marigolds and 2 petunias. Waiting for more petunias as well as coleus to show up at Lowes. Maybe next week??

Coleus is fun. Nearly endless combos of colors and patterns.

If you get one you reeeeeeally like, it roots very easily in a jar of water - good way to keep a favorite over winter for the following spring.

Ooooh! That could be a fun little science project for the grandkids, if they’re into that sort of thing.

I’m lying here procrastinating on getting up hoping for another bit of nappage before work, and snuggling Monks, and planning ahead as far as food-at-work.

I have a mini-cup of guacamole stashed in the walk-in, but { sigh overthinking starts } then I’d hafta schlep in crackers or possibly some (no doubt stale) tortilla chips from home, or else eat the guac plain, like some peasant … when it occurred to me that at work we have dinner rolls. And sliced tomato. And bacon. And lettuce.

BLAT for dinner tonight!

I was a member of the San Diego Navy Sailing club (just south of the amphibious base) from 1971 to 1975 or 1976. I used to love seeing the S-3s flying over.

I got a tax refund from California yesterday. I’d written them a check for $725. They sent me one for two dollars.

My grow light herb garden has three plants sprouted up to a couple of inches. The other four are going nowhere and I can’t reseed them because I didn’t bother to note which herbs were where in the planter. I suppose I could just put anything in there; more is better, right? Right?

I was in the North Island Navy Flying Club from '74-'76. Sadly it no longer exists. I got my license there on my 21st birthday. Wonder when it went away…

I wasn’t old enough for that, but I was raised in aviation. Dad was in the FAA at that time, stationed at DAG. Mom worked at Gibbs. Looks like I got my PPL in 1984.

Howdy all. Sitting and eating a convention cheeseburger, which tastes about what you would expect. Having fun looking at planes and meeting some You Tube posters who are just as nice in person. Only problem is that when they have panel discussions there are no seats so you have to stand up. At least there are seats for eating.

Have read all but absorbed little so hopefully more later.

Today is get the garden in before the rain begins day. I went to the local nursery and go some roma tomatoes and peppers. Squeaky will help me pour in the raised bed soil. As we were carrying the sacks down to the garden, he asked if they were over my weight limit. I told him they were, and if his mother asked he carried them all down himself.

This is what I’m looking forward to the most with my surgery next week. If ai have to go back to contacts, so be it. My father waxed for hours about how much more color there was his cataract surgery.

I first read this as “colitis is fun.” Boy, was I confused.

I’m taking a short break in the midst of being somewhat productive and wanted to post this PSA:

The federal government is now allowing 88 octane gas to be sold (and have quietly dumped a large amount on the market).

This gas sells for about 50 cents a gallon less than regular unleaded, but it will lower your gas mileage and hurt your performance. Check with the manufacturer before using it, I can see how using fuel that your engine wasn’t designed for could cause major damage over time.

I left my sister a VM at her home phone. Not sure if she’s back in her house, or if she’ll get it, so I sent her a series of texts.

I left you a VM at your home number. (The cell number went straight to ‘this voice mailbox has not been set up.)

We don’t have enough money in the house account to give you ‘thousands of dollars’ in free money.

You agreed that there would be no more ‘emergencies’. If something came up, you’d have to figure it out.

As I said, this can’t go on. We should sell [the rental house]. Zillow says the house is worth about $1 million. Looking at pics, it’s not in great shape. Really needs painting and landscaping. And the roof has always needed to be replaced. So we couldn’t sell it for that much.

But let’s suppose we did. The basis was $450K when it went into the Trust. That would mean $550K capital gains. From what I can see, the capital gains tax is 20%. That would be $110K. So $890K net. $445,000 each. But I’m not a tax guy.

There would also be fees to the realtor(s) that handle the sale, and probably other stuff. No idea how much we’d actually get.

And remember that I’m paying YOUR income tax on the rent money. I suppose I would have to do that when we sell the house too. Or you would have to pay your share.

I have my new job that I have to go into every weekday. I have no time in the mornings or evenings. Sundays we go to church. So my phone is silent Sunday through Friday, and I can only answer it and deal with things (including laundry, groceries, cooking, etc.) on my only day off.

DSHS is there to help you out. I assume you have a case worker. You really need to contact them.

As I told her, I am not knowledgeable in taxes. Did the best I could, googling, but I have zero real idea what the net would be,

Will it be marked separately, and (hopefully) sold out of separate pumps?

Growing up in northern Indiana, Good Friday was always potato planting day. Us kids would go to services with Mom, then come home and join Dad in the truck patch planting.

Is that the E15 that I was reading about? E10 is about as much alcohol as I’ll use, given options. If you’re getting gas for a lawn mower or other small engine, try to find a place with alcohol free gas.

I baked a batch of corn muffins for tomorrow and a batch of cranberry pecan muffins for the freezer this morning. Keep trying to get the help line for the tax folks to reset my password. Methinks I’ll have to wait until Monday for that.

I’ve only seen it at a Sheetz, the pumps haven’t changed. One of the two pumps on each island had “premium” and the other pump had the NEW and IMPROVED blend. They were clearly marked but if one is used to just getting the cheapest one in the line up, they might get the 88 octane instead.

Yes and no, not all 88 octane gasoline has 15 percent ethanol - but most of it does. It is supposed to be clearly marked at the point of purchase. It was clearly marked in the single data point I have to offer

A local convenience store has been selling this, but it’s marked “For Alternative Fuel Vehicles Only” - it’s a high percentage of Ethanol I think. At least I assume it’s the same stuff - it’s marked 88 octane.

I picked up the various and sundry hunks of stuff Otis had dragged all over the yard to chew on. We’ll see if he drags more out there. Then I mowed/mulched the last of the leaves. I also raked up a bunch that were in a space where the mower couldn’t go. So the back yard looks a little better, except for all the Otis craters. We’ll be filling them in soon.

FCD has the race track all ready for the kids to see tomorrow. We’ll also be getting the trains tomorrow, which means he’ll figure out how to incorporate them into the layout. He keeps asking me questions about them, but I haven’t seen any of them in over 50 years, so I wasn’t a lot of help. We’ll find out when we take possession from my sister. I just hope they’ll still run.

Up to 88 Ferrets here, but it’s pleasant because the humidity is low. When it gets this hot in the summer, it’s, shall we say, ICK!!! I love having the house open, but that will end tonight till later next week. Freezing temps forecast by Tuesday night.

Supper will be some sort of creative mix of ham, onions, and little red spudlets. I may throw some sliced mushrooms into the mix, too. Or not. We’ll see.

Sunshine! A delight. We went for a neighborhood walk. My lovely wife is going out to her volunteer gig and may return home with Vietnamese take-out. I will remain home to make sure the kitties have a warm surface to nap on.
